Language Courses | Year Plan 2016 www.jules-maastricht.com Interview with Karin van der Ven, owner and founder of Jules MAASTRICHT — By Luc Wassen What makes learning a foreign language so useful? “As a student, I lived in Istanbul for half a year. Although English was the language used in our university classes and spoken amongst the students, it was very useful to be able to speak some Turkish as well, just to get by in everyday life as it enabled me to connect with the Turkish people. That applies to just about any country you go to. We are no longer confined within the boundaries of The Netherlands, but are instead part of a much larger international community. Frans Timmermans (European Commissioner) made a nice comment with regards to that. According to Timmermans speaking Italian, Russian, French and English has helped him tremendously at a diplomatic level. Language skills enabled him to gain support for his ideas and build relationships with others. ” So speaking English is not enough? “Speaking English can take you far, but not far enough. This is simply because not everyone in the world speaks a second language, let alone a third. Moreover, learning multiple languages is not only useful for better communication but has also been proven to actually make you smarter as it increases your memory capacity and makes it capable of tackling problems in a different manner. Additionally, as you get accustomed to switching between different thinking patterns, multitasking becomes easier. So, I would definitely say there are plenty of reasons to take a language course.” What languages does Jules offer? “We offer 11 languages including Dutch, English, German, French, Portuguese and Spanish, as well as Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese. It is a broad program, which caters to everyone’s need.” Jules’ Language Courses The benefits of learning a language Language courses —2016 What is a typical Jules language course like? “Our groups consist of about 8 to 14 students. This way everyone gets the opportunity to speak the target language in class. Also, it is important to note that courses are not solely limited to grammatical explanations. Students are encouraged to converse regularly and give presentations as well. We find this type of structure most effective. Moreover, our courses follow the guidelines of the Common European Framework of Reference which is especially useful if you are asked to show your certificate somewhere as it provides employers with a point of reference.” Who usually signs up for your language courses? “It is a very diverse group. Everyone who would like to learn a language is welcome to sign up. Our courses are suitable for students, expats and others who live in the Maastricht region. In addition, we offer courses for retail businesses as well as for companies in the hospitality industry. Each year Maastricht receives over 3 million tourists. We believe that welcoming them properly in their own respective language will entice them to come back. It is part of being friendly and hospitable, which ultimately helps in creating a positive image for Maastricht. In short, learning another language works for everyone, Learning another language works for everyone, and at any level. Speaking English can take you far, but not far enough.

TestimonialsWhat do others say about Jules’ Language Courses?“I believe foreign languages break social barriers. The Jules A2 German language course not only introduced me to the language, but more importantly: to German culture. Most valuable skill I have learned and use every day: the German courtesy Grammar, or Hölichkeitsform.”— Hubert Kalkman (28) from Maastricht

“Learning Dutch in small classes with a permanent and personal follow-up allowed me to quickly increase my speaking skill and fluency level. Thanks to Jules, I added another string to my bow in an area where speaking Dutch is a must to find a consistent job.”— Simon Jeanmart (24) from Belgium
