Early Life
• Born in 1565 in London, England.• Spent childhood on the Pampas.• Developed a heart condition and finally
emigrated to England.• Married Katherine Hudson and had
three sons named John, Oliver, and Richard.
Previous Experience
• The Muscovy Company, which did trading with Asia, hired Henry Hudson to find the Northwest water passage from England to Asia.
• Henry Hudson failed to do so.• Soon after, he was sponsored by the
Dutch East India Company to do the same.
Exploration
• In the fall of 1609, he and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the Hudson River from New York Harbor to present day Albany, NY.
• Did not find the North West Passage to Asia.• Crew was blocked by a massive iceberg, and
waves hit their ship.• Explored Arctic Waters west across the North
Atlantic and on the coast of Maine.
Results
• Found Hudson Bay.• Discovered the Hudson
River, and made its region into New Amsterdam.
• Became the captain of a ship called Discovery.
• Hudson Bay was found in 1610.
• Hudson River was found in 1609.
Conclusion
• Henry Hudson died on June 22,1611 at Hudson Bay because his crew threw him out of the ship with a few other men on a small boat with nothing to eat or drink.
• He is remembered today for his courageous act of risking his life to complete four extremely foolhardy voyages and surviving in harsh, brutal winters at uncharted Arctic waters.
