Dear Parents and Guardians
Thank you to all the parents and staff who went to the camp at Phillip Island last
week. Chris Kovits, Jess Bullen, Caitlin Wightman, Julie-Anne Tseregounis,
Mark Whitehead, Jarod Ryan, Grant Puglia, Wes Minster, Alison Hazelman,
Nicole Aalders, Brendan Renehan, Steven Vlachos, Ruxsana Shafiq-Antonacci,
Andrea Dennis, Danielle Bayes, Michael Healy and Vivian & Allan Hau.
I visited the camp on Thursday and was impressed with the amazing range of
activities, the fantastic campsite and accommodation and the outstanding behaviour
of all the students. All students returned home happy but exhausted! Luckily, they
had a long weekend to rest up!
Sue Fuller, Anna Papamichael, Jarod Ryan and myself attended the Regional
Leaders’ conference last Monday and Tuesday at The Melbourne Conference
Centre. It was an excellent opportunity to hear about latest research and trends in
education. We have returned to school excited to share this information with the
staff.
Anna Papamichael is on leave and will return to school on August 14. During this
time, Anna will visit the Soccer World Cup in Russia. Anna is a very KEEN soccer
enthusiast and hasn’t missed a World Cup in 20 years!
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Division Cross Country
yesterday. There is a report in this newsletter outlining the students’ results.
We have had a busy past few weeks with excursions and incursions and I’m sure you will enjoy reading about them in this edition!
Kind regards
Julie

YEAR 1 INSECT INCURSION
On Friday June 1, all Year 1 students had an amazing
incursion where they had the opportunity to learn about
insects and minibeasts. Students learnt about the basic
requirements that allows them to grow and change, their
different features and habitats, as well, facts about
invertebrates with exoskeletons. Students were able to hold
many of the insects, except of course the scorpion and tarantula spider.
Below are some of our Year 1 students’ thoughts.
My favourite part was watching the crab coming out of it’s shell. James 1H/S
I cannot believe I saw a rhino beetle. It was so shiny and colourful! Arlo 1H/S
The best thing I did was holding the tarantula spider in the box and
Mrs. Hookey took a photo. Apasia 1D
The best thing I did was being able to touch all the insects. Dexter 1D
My favourite part was when it was my turn to hold the lizard. Claire 1G
I will always remember having fun and especially seeing the stick insect
because of it’s big wings. Natasha 1G
My favourite part was seeing a scorpion up close because the scorpion is
very dangerous. Jayden 1H/S
The best thing I did at the incursion was seeing the stick insect. It was so big!
Marcus 1H/S
I will always remember this incursion because it was fun holding the insects.
Roy 1D
YEAR 1 INSECT INCURSION
I cannot believe I saw a melon snail at the incursion. Edwin 1D
The best thing I did was feeling the insects, such as the stag beetle.
Daniel 1G
I cannot believe I saw a large wing from a male stick insect. Calvin 1G
I cannot believe I saw a rainbow beetle at the incursion. Daniel 1H/S
I loved seeing the hermit crab. Charlotte 1D
The best thing I did at the incursion was holding the lizard. Isaac 1G
Year 3 and 4 students attended a Road Safety Program run by RACV.
This session focused on passenger safety, giving students important
information whilst also allowing them to participate in ‘hands on activities’.
Did you know that you have to be 145cm tall to sit in the front seat?
Also, make sure you try not to annoy the driver when they are driving.
Atiya and Matthew 4H
We learnt that It takes a lot of concentration to drive with lots of
passengers in the car. We also learnt how to put on a helmet safely and
properly. Laura and Asher 4H
We learnt that it is very important to not
distract the driver too much. When we
are walking or crossing the road we learnt
to always ‘Stop, Look, Listen, Think!’
Chris and Lachlan 4H
RACV ROAD SAFETY PROGRAM
Foundation and Year 1 students participated in a Road Safety Incursion
with Tara, who is Donburn’s Active Travel Program facilitator from
Manningham Council.
The children talked about their modes of transport to school, what they might
see on the way to Donburn as well as how important it is to STOP, LOOK,
LISTEN and THINK before crossing our roads.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the road safety incursion and were eager to
take complete the take home activity to play ‘Traffic Bingo’ with their family.
This was aimed to encourage support and participation as a family about the
‘shared responsibility’ of road safety.
Thank you to Beth Mcinnes and Tara Watson for making this happen.
FOUNDATION FAIRYTALE INCURSION
After learning about fairy tales this term, the Foundation children were treated
to a real life fairy tale on Tuesday June 5. They were entertained by the cast
of Carp Productions, who mixed up some of their favourite fairy tales
including Rapunzel, the Three Billygoats Gruff and the Little Red Hen.
There was lots of audience participation and the children could not stop
laughing! It was a wonderful way for the Foundation students to see some of
their favourite characters in action!

The finishing touches are being made to our new Seasonal Sustainability
Garden near the Grade 5 portables.
Started in the middle of last year, this project has seen parents, teachers and
students from Foundation to Year Six, involved in the construction of the
seven new wicking garden beds. (A wicking bed is a garden bed with a
waterproof lining that holds a reservoir of water at the bottom from which
water is draw upwards like a wick to the surface of the bed via natural soil
osmosis or through the roots of plants in the bed.)
Students prepared the ground, filled the boxes with stones and soil, planted,
mulched and created artwork. Each garden bed is themed to align with one of
the seven Wurundjeri (local aboriginal) seasons and is planted with a mix of
native and fruit/vegetable species which we will use in our Kitchen Garden
Classroom Program.
SEASONAL SUSTAINABILITY GARDEN
Artwork on the outside of the boxes include seven sustainability messages
created using plastic bottle tops. These were designed and created by our
Year 3-6 Sustainability Leaders.
Artwork representing traditional seasons were completed by students from
Years 1 and 2.
SEASONAL SUSTAINABILITY GARDEN
SEASONAL SUSTAINABILITY GARDEN
Last year our current Year 4 students read the wonderful book “All through the
Year” by Jane Godwin and Anna Walker with Andrea in Library. The students
identified their favorite seasons and gave reasons. Some of these have also
been included in the garden.
Years 2, 3 and 6 students are currently designing the artwork representing the
seven Wurrundjeri seasons. Year 5 students are working on totem poles that
will be placed in the Indigenous Garden.
This project has provided students with real hands-on learning opportunities in
cross-curricular priories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and
cultures, and sustainability. They have investigated weather and seasons and
the ways in which different cultural groups describe them.
Creation of the garden was made possible with donations from Bunnings
(Nunawading) and support from a $1500 Yates Junior Landcare Grant for
Gardens. A further $500 of Yates products donated to the school through the
grant have been gladly used by the students participating in our lunchtime
Garden Club.
A big thank you to everyone involved in this project
including students, staff and parents at working bees.
A special thank you to John Conte for collecting all the
construction materials, putting them all together to create
the beds and keeping the project rolling.
Kathryn Manago - Sustainability/Garden Club
Student thoughts on their involvement include:
“It’s cool to see that every week the plants grow a bit
bigger” Sebastian, Year 4.
“I enjoyed painting the green arrows because I got to work
in a team. I also like watering the plants through the special
pipe. I’m looking forward to continuing to work in the
garden”. Allie, Year 4.
“Painting the boxes was really fun. I painted multiple,
including the winter box and the flower one. I enjoy helping
in the Sustainability Garden.” Jacinta, Year 3.
“I planted some radishes and I water the plants and
potatoes. I actually thought of the slogan Every Drop
Counts and I painted the tap for my slogan on the sign.
It’s really fun and I look forward to more
Gardening Club”. Zoe, Year 3.
“I enjoyed watering the pants. When I was
little, I loved doing gardening. I was glad to
find that our school had a gardening club.
I helped plant the brussel sprouts and I
watered them. I hope one day I can try
one”. Lucy, Year 3
“I painted the grey part of the box. I watered
the plants with my mum and helped take the
signs out of the classroom so Mr Ryan
could screw them on. I enjoy gardening in
the Sustainability Garden”. Sienna, Year 2.
SEASONAL SUSTAINABILITY GARDEN
COOKING PASTA WITH 4 O
It was a surprise that we got to cook Linguine with Naden and Kathryn.
To make the Linguine we had to harvest our ingredients from the garden and
the Chicken’s coop. We collected 4 eggs and herbs such as Basil, Garlic and
Mint. We washed our hands and started preparing. We needed to cut the
herbs before we used them. We made a bear claw with our hands so that we
did not hurt ourselves while we were cutting.
Next, we made the dough using Flour, Eggs and Salt. Kneading the dough
was one of the challenging parts of preparing the dough. To roll the dough into
pasta we used a pasta maker, and then the pasta needed to rest. Then, we
cut the pasta into strips. The pasta and the sauce were cooked on the stove.
We cleaned up and did the dishes while it cooked and some people set the
table. We got to eat our final pasta in a tea cup.

Canoeing: Before we could get on the canoe, we had to put on a life jacket and a
helmet. We chose a partner and got an oar each. After that, the instructor showed us how
to get into the canoe safely and how to row. The lake was in the shape of Australia with a
floaty that represented Uluru. Once the canoe was in the water, we climbed in and had a
race. At the end we got to capsize. Everyone enjoyed working as a team and learning
how to canoe.
By Marina, Miah B, Natalie, Matt, Moosa, and Omar
Team rescue: We needed to carry a dummy on a stretcher with three planks and
two ropes to get to the other side of the obstacle course. Our task was not to drop the
dummy or touch the ground while completing the obstacle course. It was a difficult task
but we had fun doing it. It involved teamwork, strategy and communication. The quickest
group to complete the course was Group 3 with a time of 52 minutes.
By Ashley L, Saanidhya, Isaac, Max and Jordan.
Ball games: Ball games was an exciting activity. We played dodgeball, basketball,
soccer, football and cricket. You could choose what ball games we would like to do.
Alison ran the ball games activity and put us into teams. We had lots of basketballs,
footballs and much more equipment. The popular sports were basketball and dodgeball.
By Katie, Emmi, Erin, Gilbert, George, Sam Mu and Karam.
Low ropes and boulder wall: One of the activities at Phillip Island Adventure
Resort was the Low Ropes and Boulder Wall. They were both really fun. In Low Ropes,
there were ten different challenges and challenge ten was the hardest. Hardly any people
made it to the end, as it was really hard and difficult to complete. The boulder wall was a
rock climbing course. It was much easier than the low ropes course. It was a lot more
enjoyable for the people who knew how to rock climb. Everyone enjoyed this activity very
much and had a great time.
By Harrison, Rhea, Luke B, Amelie, Daniel and Thomas
Duty groups: For duty group we had to go to the hall 15 minutes early to set the
tables before everyone arrived. We placed cups and cutlery and got the drinks ready.
After everyone finished their meals, we had to wipe the tables clean and take the dishes
to the kitchen. We also had to vacuum the floor. This was a good activity because it
taught us to be responsible and tidy.

YEARS 5 AND 6 CAMP AT PHILLIP ISLAND STUDENT RECOUNTS
YEARS 5 AND 6 CAMP AT PHILLIP ISLAND
Initiatives: The Initiatives course was where we had to get a whole team across a
very hard and challenging set of obstacle courses. It was very challenging because we
had to work as a team. Some challenges were to get across a bunch of tires, to get
across 3 tight ropes, to try and get across a log with none of us falling off, To get across a
tight rope with nothing but our teammates hands, to get across a see-saw and to try and
balance it for 10 seconds and the last challenge was to get through a maze in an amount
of time.
By Joel, Jamie and Aakash
Twin Flying Fox: For the twin flying fox we got into pairs and went to the instructor
to get our harnesses on. We collected a rope and ran up a hill to reach Shaharna, the
camp leader. We climbed onto a platform and stood on three steps. We got our
harnesses tightened for safety, then we waited for the person to wave the flag to make
sure nothing was in the way. 3, 2, 1 Go! We zipped down like lightning towards the
bottom where everyone was waiting. We dropped our ropes so the instructors could drag
us to the ladder to get unclipped. We slowly climbed down the ladder to get our harness
off. We all had so much fun!
Stazi, Sophie, Daniella and Ryan
Disc Golf: In disc golf, you have 3 Frisbees: a driver, a middle shot and a putter.
The aim of the game is to throw the Frisbees into a basket (lowest score wins). You play
9 holes and there is a par of 4 or 5. The par is the amount of times you can throw the
Frisbees to get a goal. If you pass the par number you fail, if you get under or the exact
number of throws you are more likely to win. We had a great time playing disc golf with
Grant.
Written by JP, Jared, Damien and Michael G
Night walk: On the first night of camp, the Year fives and sixes split into two
groups to do the night walk. We walked in opposite directions into the dark bushland to
look at the night sky. We searched for mysterious creatures as we wandered around the
campsite with our torches. Halfway in, we switched off our flashlights and gazed upwards
into the dazzling sky. We heard noises in the bushes but no one had sightings of any
animals.
By Josh A, Ayden, Aaron and Trent
Giant Swing:
One of the most thrill-seeking activities was the Giant Swing.
It was 18m high, and had a 2m freefall. Everyone
encouraged each other and pushed their limits. We had to
put on special equipment for safety. We were connected to a
rope and got pulled by our group to the top (or our
comfortable height). Then we pulled a cord and we fell down
to the ground then flew up and came to a stop. The Giant
Swing was not doubt the best activity!
By Leo, Oliver Pa, Sadra, Ewan, Seungbin Abby and Melody
Raft building: Raft building was an exciting activity. We had to build a raft out of
pipes, wooden planks and ropes. We lined up all the pipes and wooden planks and tied
them all together with good old rope. After we built our raft, we all had to test our raft in
the big lake that is at the back of the camp site. Most teams failed sadly and got soaking
wet with cold water. Although most of us failed, we still had heaps of fun and we all really
enjoyed it.
By Samantha, Kevin, Sam R, Basma and Ava
Ponding: On camp, we had an activity called Ponding. It was an activity where we
had try and scoop water creatures in the pond with a net. Each group received a net, an
ice cube tray, a bucket and were split into groups of 4. Each group had found amazing
creatures and placed them into the ice cube tray filled with water. We then used
magnifying glasses to identify what species it was. The most common species found
were backswimmers, but some people were lucky and found things like bloodworms and
sea snails. After we identified the creatures, we carefully placed them back into the water.
Overall we had an amazing time in Ponding and hoped we could do it again.
By Dylan, Adriel and Triston
Disco: On a freezing Wednesday night, Grant organised a disco in the
multipurpose room. We saw the disco ball with bright, colourful light shining on the disco
ball. Grant and Sam, his assistant DJ, blasted out loud tunes, which pounded our hearts
with excitement. We started to dance with the music. At the end of the disco Grant
decided the king and queen disco dancers of the night. The king was Rocco and the
queen Sophie . We had a fun night and enjoyed it.
By Edmund, Tara, Ella, Remi. Ken, Rocco and James
Photo Hunt: One of the activities we did on 5/6 camp was a Photo Hunt. For this
activity we split into groups of 4 or 5 people within our activity group and we had to find
the places where different photos were taken. We had a set time limit and we had to try
and find all 35 photos. There were only 3 groups who succeeded in finding all 35 photos
in the set time. We all enjoyed the photo hunt activity and we all got to have fun with our
friends.

YEARS 5 AND 6 CAMP AT PHILLIP ISLAND
San Remo Pelican Feeding: On the way to the Phillip Island
Adventure Resort, we stopped in San Remo to watch the pelican
feeding and eat our own lunch. It was fun learning about the
pelicans and their eating habits. We learnt that pelicans eat fish.
The lady was feeding them flathead. Pelicans can keep food in their
neck. It was so cool when we saw all the pelicans jump to get the
flathead.
By Ali, Hani, Muqi, Mike and Connor
Minute To Win It: On the first night of camp, after the night
walk, Ms Tseregounis and Ms Wightman hosted Minute To Win It activities. Children were
split into 10 groups and competed in 6 activities. Some of the activities included a
Balloon Toss, Egg and Spoon Race, Coin in the Cup and the House of Cards challenge.
The winner was Team 2, and Team 1 come second. We had lots of fun and it was a great
start to a wonderful camp.
By Campbell, Alina, Rose, Izzy T, Dave and Richard
Archery: For archery, we worked with a partner. We shot 3 arrows each and had to
aim for the bullseye. Then we had to add up the scores and we found out who was the
best archer in our activity group. We moved back 2 meters every time the whole group
finished shooting their arrows. Everybody did well and had a great time.
By Keanu, Xander, Shaya, Damon and Jared
Red Faces: Red Faces was on the last night of camp. The judges were Brendan
Renehan, Mr Ryan and Ms Tseregounis. We watched many students perform different
acts and the judges rated each act out of 10. In first place came Kosta. His performance
was lip-synching. It was funny and the judges loved him – especially Mr Ryan. The
judges were harsh to everyone else though! Mr Ryan’s average score was a 5 out of 10.

BASF KIDS LAB AT MONASH UNIVERSITY
A group of students got the privilege to attend a chemistry lesson at Monash
University on Wednesday 13 June. We participated in three experiments, two
of which involved chemicals.
The first experiment was paper chromatography, then we did a super
absorber test and finally we made worms. We got to work in one of Monash’s
new chemistry labs and had some scientists help us with the experiments.
Everyone had a an amazing time and we are grateful for the experience of
attending a chemistry lesson at Monash.
