Revealing The Champion In All Of Us.

Champions rejoice! You are here today at

these Summer Games as an athlete, family

member, volunteer, coach, offi cial, sponsor,

or a fan. Together, you celebrate achieve-

ment and together you join the Dignity

Revolution.

For far too long, people with intellectual

disabilities have faced inactivity, intoler-

ance, isolation, and injustice. These Games

are more than a sports competition, but a

moment that shows the community around

you that people with intellectual disabil-

ities are talented and gifted and are to

be celebrated. It is a time where we ac-

knowledge that through Special Olympics,

achieving a personal best is true success.

These Games are an opportunity for Spe-

cial Olympics athletes to declare, “I am a

champion and I will be included!”

Every day around the world we create op-

portunities of acceptance and inclusion

through our sports, health, education,

and community building programs where

we strive to build communities full of joy

and wellness, instilling in young people

the benefi ts of playing unifi ed. Today and

throughout these Games, enjoy the mo-

ments of accomplishment, but consider

how you can create more opportunities of

accomplishment every day for our athletes.

You are a revolutionary! Each and every

one of you can be a champion for accep-

tance and inclusion. When the Games

have closed, I urge you to take back to your

schools, homes, workplace, clubs, and to

your friends the stories of courage, de-

termination, and inspiration that you wit-

nessed fi rst-hand, and encourage everyone

to join you in the Dignity Revolution.

Now, let the Games begin!

come to the athletes and supporters of the

2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games.

The Games this year will feature more than 1,100 Special

Olympics athletes from BC and the Yukon competing in 11

summer sports.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, coaches and staff

members for their commitment and the hard work they

have put in to bringing together such a high caliber event.

Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

On behalf of the Games Organizing Commit-

tee, welcome to the 2013 Special Olympics BC

Summer Games!

Your GOC is a dedicated, fun-loving, high-en-

ergy team of twenty community leaders who

have been hard at work for well over a year to

bring you the best Provincial Games yet.

Here is our shared belief: that these Games

are not the objective. They are part of a much

larger vision. The bigger picture is that per-

sons with an intellectual disability, wherever

they are, have the right to pursue excellence.

Just like anybody else. They have the right to

dream big. Just like anybody else. And they

have the right to push past their limits, to

compete and excel, to experience the joy of

teamwork, the passion of sport, to leave it all

on the fi eld. Just like anybody else. And that is

what these Games are all about.

As with any athletic competition, the hard

part is getting to the start line. All the prepa-

ration, commitment, resources and personal

sacrifi ce have already been invested and here

you are, ready to compete.

So with that process behind you; for parents,

this is your opportunity to celebrate your

child and their achievements; for coaches, to

see your dedication to the athletes rewarded;

for volunteers, to serve your community; for

our sponsors, to see your generosity in action.

Athletes, we wish you the very best as you

compete with courage. The GOC commends

all of you for the dedication you have shown in

training hard to be at your best in the Games.

And for those coming to watch the events,

we encourage you to thoroughly enjoy the

true sportsmanship, skill and joy on display, to

share the vision of your GOC for these Games,

and to help cheer the athletes toward their

personal best.

Divisioning

Special Olympics encourages athletes

of all ability levels to compete. Games

are structured so that athletes com-

pete with others of similar ability in

equitable divisions. Competition di-

visions according to gender, age, and

ability in all Special Olympics sports.

The divisioning process will take

place on Friday, July 12, in the fol-

lowing sports: basketball, bocce,

soccer, softball, swimming, and track

and fi eld. Athletes will then compete

within their divisions on Saturday,

July 13.

Games Information for SpectatorsThank you for joining us to Be a Fan and Fill the Stands in support of the amazing athletes competing in the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games! We hope the information below will help you fully enjoy your Games experience as you cheer on the deserving athletes and coaches.

Spectator Code of Conduct

To ensure the best possible competition environment for athletes and coaches, we ask

that all spectators adhere to the following Code of Conduct:

• Spectators should view the Games as a game situation and refrain from coaching ath-

letes during the competition.

• Spectators should refrain from speaking to the athletes and coaches until after the

competition and after the needs of the athletes are met unless otherwise discussed

with the Head Coach or Chef de Mission.

• Spectators who have concerns should voice them to the Provincial Offi ce staff mem-

ber at that venue. If they are not available, the spectator should approach the Head

Coach (after the competition and after the needs of the athlete are met). Avoid

talking to the coach in front of the athletes.

• Spectators should make their own travel arrangements to the competition and should

provide for their own accommodation and meals that are separate from the team.

Having fun and helping your health with Healthy AthletesSpecial Olympics BC’s goal is to

provide athletes with intellectu-

al disabilities with opportunities

to be the healthiest they can be,

and the Healthy Athletes pro-

gram is a fun and valuable part of

that project.

The Special Olympics Healthy

Athletes program includes vol-

untary free health screenings

off ered to athletes at Provincial,

National, and World Games, and

outside Games at standalone

Healthy Athletes screening

events that Special Olympics BC

has started staging in communi-

ties around the province.

Many athletes and caregiv-

ers have been surprised to go

through the free, fun Healthy

Athletes screenings and fi nd

health issues that have gone

undiagnosed through regular

health channels. Athletes also

come away with tons of free

giveaway items, even including

individually fi tted sports mouth-

guards and prescription goggles

(if needed).

Healthy Athletes addresses the

issue that many people with

intellectual disabilities have

unique issues around health care

and communicating their needs.

The issue is twofold: fi rst, many

individuals with intellectual dis-

abilities have trouble realizing or

expressing their health concerns;

second, many health profession-

als have not had the opportunity

to receive specifi c training, or

are not familiar enough with this

population, to know the best questions

to ask to draw out the issues.

International Special Olympics research

has found that people with intellectual

disabilities have a 40 per cent higher risk

for health issues, and that only one in 50

primary care physicians have received

clinical training that qualifi es them to

treat people with intellectual disabilities.

The professionals who lead Healthy Ath-

letes screenings have received specifi c

training to help them ask the right ques-

tions, and their interactions with Special

Olympics athletes lead to referrals back

into the health care system that ensure

the individuals will get the treatment

they need.

The professionals who volunteer their

time to help with Healthy Athletes value

interacting with Special Olympics ath-

letes – they have fun, and they make it

fun for all.

Dr. Erick Hartman, the Washington State

Clinical Director for Opening Eyes, has

helped out at B.C. events and describes

volunteering with Healthy Athletes as a

“heart-expanding experience.”

In a recent screening event in Washing-

ton, Dr. Hartman encountered yet anoth-

er example of why the Healthy Athletes

program matters in an athlete who al-

ways came in second place in her races.

“We found out she had severe vision

problems. We corrected her vision, and

she could then see, so that she didn’t

have to follow the person in front of her,

and she won races.” Dr. Hartman said,

smiling. “It was cool.”

Since the launch of Healthy Athletes in

1997, more than 1 million screenings

have been off ered free of charge to

Special Olympics athletes around the

world, and more than 90,000 health care

professionals have been trained about

the health issues faced by people with

intellectual disabilities. The program

has grown from off ering two types of

screenings (dental and vision) to off er-

ing seven kinds of screenings: Fit Feet

(podiatry), FUNfi tness (physical thera-

py), Health Promotion (better health and

well-being), Healthy Hearing (audiology),

MedFest (sports physical exam), Special

Olympics-Lions Club International Open-

ing Eyes (vision) and Special Smiles (den-

tistry).

Brace yourselves for a super

show: The Opening Cere-

monies for the 2013 Special

Olympics BC Summer Games

will be an energizing, moving,

and fun celebration of the

athletes and coaches who are

coming together from all over

the province and the Yukon

to share in the remarkable

Games experience. We’re ex-

pecting a big crowd to fi ll the

stands and cheer the athletes

on their way to memorable

and inspiring performances!

The big idea behind this excit-

ing show is to put the athletes

in the spotlight, celebrating all

the dedication and hard work

they’ve done to get to Langley

and be at their best in their

competitions, and welcoming

them to fully enjoy every part

of the Provincial Games expe-

rience. The ceremony will get

everyone excited about the

amazing set of competitions

to come in Langley!

The evening program is set

to include top-fl ight local en-

tertainment from a great mix

of veteran and up-and-com-

ing artists in the community,

remarks from dignitaries to

spotlight the respect and ad-

miration everyone feels for

the Games athletes, coaches,

volunteers, and supporters,

and the inspiring sight of the

bearing the fl ame to

honour the athletes

and the Games spirit

of competition and

sportsmanship.

Among the high-

lights of the evening

entertainment will

be Elvis Elite, a.k.a.

Steve Elliott, bring-

ing his contest-win-

ning act to delight

the audience with

his uncanny likeness

to Elvis. The pro-

gram also includes

actor and dancer Dante Arias, a remarkable talent at the ten-

der age of nine. Dante, a gifted young performer, will bring his

award-winning talents to the stage to thrill the crowd.

Another big moment in the show will be the Law Enforcement

Torch Run Final Leg bearing in the torch to light the Games

fl ame and salute the spirit of the athletes and coaches. A del-

egation of Chiefs of Police and Offi cers in Charge will form

an honour guard for the torch as the Final Leg runners carry

it with pride into the Opening Ceremonies, providing a power-

ful demonstration of the long-standing relationship of respect

and support between law enforcement and Special Olympics.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is an international movement

powered by dedicated law enforcement personnel around the

world who want to help Special Olympics athletes experience

acceptance, achievement, and admiration through sport.

It’s an inspiring, joyful phenomenon that has raised approx-

imately $3.4 million in B.C. since 1990 and each year brings

in about $30 million U.S. worldwide, all in support of Special

Olympics.

The Final Leg run into the Games Opening Ceremonies will be

an inspiring display and a stirring way to celebrate all the ath-

letes and coaches as they embark on their 2013 SOBC Summer

Games experience.

Fans wishing to watch and cheer from home will be able to

watch a live webcast online of the Games Opening Ceremo-

nies, as well as some of the sport events in the Langley Events

Centre. Details are online at sobcgameslangley.ca. There’s truly

something for everyone involved in the smashing 2013 Open-

ing Ceremonies!

Revealing The Champion In All Of Us.

SOBC – Vancouver bocce player Peter Gilpin has been an athlete

for 30 years, and he was “so happy” to qualify to compete in Lang-

ley where he’ll have the opportunity to shoot to advance to the

National Games.

“This one is going to be the real stuff where you can qualify to go

on. This one’s for real,” he says. “You do your best there, and if you

do really well, you can qualify for Nationals.”

The 2014 National Games is being organized by an outstanding

team of experienced community leaders, business professionals,

and sports enthusiasts led by Olympian and noted international

sport consultant Cathy Priestner Allinger as Games Organizing

Committee Chair. An Olympic medallist in speed skating, Priestner

Allinger played a key role in the staging of the hugely successful

2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in B.C., as Executive

Vice-President, Sport, Paralympics and Games Operations.

In addition, Priestner Allinger co-authored Own The Podium, the

landmark report that energized and transformed the Canadian

sport system in the lead-up to the 2010 Olympic Games. She also

brings signifi cant experience with Special Olympics to the table,

having served as a member of the Board of Directors of Special

Olympics BC.

“Special Olympics competitions are unlike any other sporting

events in the unsurpassed inspiration, sportsmanship, and pure joy

demonstrated by the dedicated athletes, coaches, and offi cials,”

Priestner Allinger said. “With my team, I’m determined to make the

best Games experience for athletes and their families.”

The 2014 Games will be hosted at one of Canada’s preeminent

post-secondary institutions in the University of British Columbia.

Athletes and coaches will be housed on site, where everyone can

take advantage of the exceptional facilities and support team that

are available.

In the Vancouver 2014 events, athletes will be competing to earn

the right to represent Canada at the next Special Olympics World

Summer Games in 2015 in Los Angeles. For upcoming information

For the Jorgensens, Special Olym-

children in the family.

“My family is really busy, Special

we all came together,” said Kate-

“It is great, it is the one thing we

Mucho BurritoTM hits just the right notes with our made-to-or-der gourmet Mexican menu. Just one taste of our hand-rolled burritos, tacos and quesadillas will tell you how much effort we put into our mouthwatering products.

We’ve put a fresh gourmet spin on Mexican food! Our tender “barbacoa” (shredded beef) and “carnitas” (shredded pork) are slow- cooked (about 8 hours!), retaining the tantalizing fl a-vor of the Mexican seasonings we amply apply. There’s a reason these meats are marinated overnight – it’s called “succulent!” Delicious salsas and guacamoles are made daily. Mucho Bur-ritoTM offers it all in a bright, fun contemporary atmosphere you’re sure to love.

Revealing The Champion In All Of Us.

Growing up, Bryan was quite

athletic and always loved

playing sports, but as the oth-

er kids got older, he could no

longer keep up because of his

Down syndrome.

“As he got older,

the gap widened

and he wasn’t re-

ally able to com-

pete (with the

other kids),” Ben

explained.

“You started to

see the separation coming;

the kids were getting stron-

ger and faster and he was just

having a little bit of trouble

competing.”

Bryan has done a variety of

sports, such as swimming,

fi ve-pin bowling, fl oor hockey

and softball.

And while he loves compet-

ing, it is made extra special

by the fact the whole family is

involved.

“It is great hav-

ing my family do

this and having

the people that

care about you

around,” he said.

Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.

Ben coaches a handful of sports as well as occasionally driving

athletes to and from competitions.

When Travis and Katelynn began helping out with Special Olym-

pics, they were only 13 and 11, respectively. But

they have stuck with it through the years and are

now both certifi ed coaches.

Travis coaches fl oor hockey and soccer and Kate-

lynn in rhythmic gymnastics and track and fi eld.

Katelynn said she was initially overwhelmed when

she fi rst met some of the other Special Olympics

athletes. But she quickly saw how nice and caring

they were and knew she wanted to stay involved.

“It is a phenomenal feeling,” Travis said. “Any day I can go out

there and coach, it can turn a bad day into the best day ever.”

Even though he no longer lives in Campbell River, he still makes

the three-hour roundtrip drive from Nanaimo once a week to

coach.

He described the athletes’ enthusiasm as a sight to behold.

“They can go out there and let’s say they lose the game, they are

still on top of the world,” he described.

“They are not down about anything, they are always staying pos-

itive, happier than can be. They are not moping around or down

about anything.”

Katelynn started out as a gofer at special events,

running errands for the organizers. She also used

to knit and make stained-glass prizes for silent auc-

tions.

“I have just fallen in love with the people,” Katelynn

said, adding that without Special Olympics, she may

never have met them.

“As a coach, you feed off their energy,” Ann added.

“It is absolutely infectious, their enthusiasm is so contagious.”

With both parents also working full-time, they know that with-

out the support of Travis and Katelynn, none of this would be

possible for Bryan.

“They stepped up and took care of diff erent things,” Ben said.

All fi ve are in Langley for the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer

Games, with Bryan competing in soccer and the other four excit-

ed to be attending as coaches.
