It is fitting that this day is linked with Catholic Education week as we acknowledge that we are part of the mission of the Church and that we share in the great story that is Catholic Education in Queensland and Australia. This year the theme for Catholic Education Week is ‘Opening Doors in the Year of Mercy’, drawing on the symbolism that Catholic schools ‘open doors’ for students with our commitment to holistic education. How fitting is this concept of ‘opening doors’ for our celebration tomorrow when we will honour the contribution of the Sisters of Charity to education in Ashgrove, particularly at Mt St Michael’s over the past 91 years. We are looking forward to welcoming twenty Sisters of Charity who have strong links with the College including Sister Clare Nolan the current Congregational Leader, Sister Suzette Clark, a current Board Member and Sister Cate O’Brien who is a much loved recent member of our staff. The vision of Mary Aikenhead and the story of the Sisters of Charity inspires us and shapes who we are today. Towards the end of her life Mary Aikehead prayed in the Sisters of Charity Chapel at Harolds Cross that those who follow “will continue to live out the values, the practices and good works of the Sisters of Charity and transmit its spirit from age to age.” Tomorrow in honouring those who have come before us we commit to living out the prayer of Mary Aikenhead. This week we received the following reflection from Sister Clare Nolan. We the Sisters of Charity are looking forward to celebrating with you on July 29 at Mt St Michael’s College Ashgrove, on July 30 with Mt Olivet Convents old and new and on July 31 with St Finbarr’s Parish Ashgrove. We will be celebrating with you the years of seed planting and watering by the Sisters of Charity in education, health and pastoral care.

Dear Parents, Staff and Students

The last Friday in July is a special day in our calendar with our celebration of Mary Aikenhead day; a celebration of our mission, culture and identity. It is fitting that this day is linked with Catholic Education week as we acknowledge that we are part of the mission of the Church and that we share in the great story that is Catholic Education in Queensland and Australia.

Congratulations

The latest recipient of the Year 10 Star Student award is Milou Kilpatrick (10C). Milou was nominated for exhibiting keenness and taking responsibility for her learning. She is pro-active in seeking help and accepting feedback with a positive attitude. Milou is respectful and caring in her interactions with everyone and especially in looking after a new student to Year 10. Milou is always humble and gracious in her manner.

The Vision of the Graduate Award is a new award for Year 11 students based on the attributes of an MSM graduate- compassion, conscience, commitment, competence and confidence. Students and Home Room teachers nominate Year 11s, recognising and celebrating consistent examples of compassion, conscience, commitment, competence and confidence in the everyday actions and attitude of the award recipients. Congratulations to our first group of award winners: Zoe Freke, Afu Pulini, Stephanie Smith, Elizabeth Smyth, Imogen Barry and Alexandra Clayton.

Megghann Thomas (Year 10) competed at the Australian Artistic Roller Skating National Championships in Melbourne during the school holidays and achieved some fantastic results. She placed first and was the Australian champion for her Intermediate Solo Freedance event. In addition to this, she placed third in her Intermediate Solo Dance event and placed first with her skating partner in both her Pairs Open Freedance and Pairs Intermediate Dance events. As a result of this Megghann has once again been selected to represent Australia at the International Oceania Skating Championships in New Zealand in September. Well done Megghann!

Caitlin Dempsey (Year 11) has been accepted into the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM Camp. Caitlin has been chosen due to her outstanding academic achievement and passion in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. With a glowing recommendation from Ms Paterson, she will be a welcome inclusion in this program. Caitlin will join a select group of high achieving students from around Queensland on a five day camp that will provide them with engaging and inspirational research experiences in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The QUT’s Vice-Chancellor’s STEM Camp is held in the September holiday break, 25 – 30 September, and is fully funded by QUT. We trust that Caitlin will enjoy the experience and benefit from the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The winners of the Year 7 English Blog Competition have now been judged and published on the library’s blog, “Between the pages.” Congratulations to our winner - Ella Patterson from 7F and the 5 finalists – Elyssa Schumann 7C, Ella Chewe 7B, Grace Burgess 7D, Bella Leung-Dias 7D and Elizabeth Dickson 7C who were presented with

their prizes by the College’s Director of Literacy, Ms Amanda Wallas. You can read the students’ winning reviews through this link https://wordpress.com/posts/betweenthepages.live Thank you to Mrs Correia for organising the competition, the Year 7 English teachers for their encouragement and the Library Staff for the prizes.

On the 14th July, ten Year 11 and Year 12 Mathletes competed in the Churchie Maths Teams Challenge. Diving straight back into a full day of problem solving, after only two days of school, our students did extremely well, with the Senior A team bringing home the trophy, placing 1st with 111 points, followed by Mansfield State High on 100 and St Laurence’s College on 99 points. The Senior B team also did very well and came 6th in the competition. These great results are a testament to the hours of lunchtime training and commitment not only from the students but also Mr Humphreys, who has relentlessly challenged the students to think outside the box. Thank you to Mr Brancatini who came along to help the teams out as a supervisor for the day and to Ms O’Neill who first inspired the students to get involved with Mathletes. There’s no better way to say goodbye to our Year 12 mathletes than to finish five years of dedication with a win!

Zyreen Fernando 11B who has achieved First Class Honours (97.5%) in her Grade 5 Mandolin ANZCA Music Examination.

Thank you to Melissa Drummond for handing in an item to reception.

Foundation News - Trivia Night

The MSM “Be Bold, Go for Gold” Trivia Night raised just over $6000 towards the MSM Scholarship fund. Well done to those who supported the evening!

The competition was fierce and there were some standout answers to the questions but the evening was eventually won by the very competitive team known as “The Golden Touch”. This team was also successful in bidding for Alison Terrey and her highly prized answers to the MSM specific round raising an additional $320 towards the scholarship fund.

It was great to see some students come along to challenge the adults and take home the special student prize.

Congratulations to the winners “The Golden Touch”, and commiserations to the wooden spooners “Gold Fogies”.

The best themed table prize went to the Silent Knights.

Thank you to the following businesses/families for their very generous donations to the Silent Auction and Raffle prizes: MILK café (Scott family), John Ellingsen Agencies (MSM Uniform Shop), The Hon. Kate Jones, The Gillmeister Family, MSM Alumni Association, Upgrades R Us, Charlies Fruit Market (Tabet family), Meat at Billy’s, The Grove, Newmarket Hotel, UCI (Scriggins family) & KISS photography.

Mt St Michael’s College is running its first ever Immersion Tour to Alice Springs during the September school holidays.

We are very excited at the prospect and looking forward to establishing a long term connection with the Indigenous communities in Alice Springs. We will be working closely with the Dominican Fathers and the Missionary Sisters of Charity.

Thirteen Year 11 students will be accompanied by Mrs Foxover and Mr Campion for the ten day immersion.

We are looking for members of our community to support the upcoming Immersion Tour through donating any AFL paraphernalia. This can be jerseys, balls or other merchandise. The children that we will be working with in schools and health centres and crazy about AFL and this will be a very positive way for MSM to build a solid connection with the communities that we will be engaging with.

All donations to be dropped off at Mr Campion’s office or at College reception. Thank you in advance.

Mt St Michael’s Staff and students takes great pride in the Mission and Values of the College and as an extension of this, we will continue with our Ministry Care Programme in 2016.

We are aware that there are students and families within our community who are at risk due to a variety of factors. So, through the various networks of the Parents & Friends Association, the College Foundation, the Past Pupils, the Pastoral Programme at the College and simply by word of mouth, we hope to become aware of these situations and to respond on a case by case basis.

The College acknowledges that just by being here we are carrying on the mission and vision of the Foundress of the Sisters of Charity, Mary Aikenhead. The poor, the vulnerable, the marginalised in society were always close to the heart of Mary Aikenhead.

During the course of 2015 we responded as a community through preparing meals for families whose difficult circumstances we had been made aware of. We will continue this over the course of this year.

If you would like to contribute to the Ministry Care Programme and support those who are going through difficult times, please contact Stephen Campion on [email protected]
