CITY NEWS & EVENTS:

SUMMER DOG SAFETY Too hot for you, too hot for them!

Other than the love of their humans, pups have everything going against them in the Phoenix summers: heat, hot sidewalks, thunder, lightning, fireworks and pool parties. Warm Walks: Sidewalks are too hot this time of year for daytime walking. They easily reach 160 degrees; black asphalt 200 degrees. If you can’t press the back of your hand onto the ground for 5 seconds, it’s too hot for your pup’s paws - regardless of how tough their pads are or how fast they are moving. Dogs sweat only through their paws, and cool through panting. Booties are an option, or just stay inside until temps drop below 90 and sidewalks cool (usually 1.5 hour after sunset). Overheating: The ground radiates heat onto your doggie's tummy and chest, so your pup can overheat quickly. Dogs cool by panting, and as their body temperature rises, they can’t pant fast enough to cool down. If you see an extended tongue, drooling, and rapid panting, get your pup to a cool area immediately. Wet towels on his head & chest can cool him off. It’s counterintuitive, but ice or very cold water will make things worse. The cold causes blood vessels to constrict, so overheated blood moves away from the skin and deeper into the body; organ failure or death can happen.

Forum in Seattle. “Airports are embracing innovation and deploying creative solutions like never before, and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport under the leadership of Director of Aviation Services Jim Bennett is a clear leader in the field,” AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli said. “The work that Jim and his team have done to enhance the passenger experience and streamline airport operations at PHX is remarkable, and AAAE and the Airport Innovation Accelerator are happy to recognize and celebrate their innovative approaches as a model for airports in the U.S. and around the globe.” “Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport is honored to receive this prestigious award,” Bennett said. “Our goal is to deliver world-class customer service to every customer every day, and I’m proud that our team creates innovative solutions and initiatives to accomplish that goal.” The Airport Innovation Award was established by the Airport Innovation Accelerator to honor innovative developments that are a model for airports around the country. PHX secured the award for a portfolio of creative innovations to enhance the passenger experience and make airport operations more efficient, including: a redesign of Terminal 3 that includes cutting-edge technology to facilitate efficient passenger processing; a “dress rehearsal” program for children with autism and their families to prepare for a flight; deployment of numerous technologies to improve security; and the consolidation of all business intelligence operations to improve operating efficiency. As another sign of PHX’s commitment to innovation, the airport has also joined the Accelerator Airport Partner Program, which is an opportunity for leading airports to influence and drive innovation for the airport community through the Accelerator. PHX joins a growing list of airports committed to innovation that, through their Accelerator memberships, are well-positioned to drive cutting-edge innovation at their facilities and serve as a model for the entire aviation community. More information about the Accelerator Airport Partner Program is available online.

SPECIAL THANKS TO APS AND SRP!! I want to send a very special THANK YOU to APS and SRP. These two great companies came to the rescue in order to assist the Phoenix Police K-9 training facility. No outdoor lighting had been installed at the facility, so training could not take place in the evening hours. That is until APS and SRP stepped up, provided temporary lighting and made it possible for our officers and K-9’s to train after dark. THANK YOU for the assistance and for being a great partner of the City of Phoenix!

The PBISaz Achievement Bronze Award recognizes Stetson Hills and West Wing schools for successful implementation and outcomes. This award criterion requires high

WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

Thanks to a new state-funded grant from the School Safety Program, the WESD was one of 30 schools districts awarded School Resources Officers (SRO)! The WESD was awarded eight SROs for the following schools:

Cholla Middle School, Desert Foothills Junior High, Mountain Sky Junior High, Palo Verde Middle School, Royal Palm Middle School, Sunnyslope School and Washington Elementary.

Summer construction projects are moving along at many WESD schools in District 1 thanks to your tax dollars:

Campus-wide flooring replacement is currently taking place at Cholla Middle School. The administration area includes a variety of flooring – porcelain tile in the lobby area for durability; due to high traffic, luxury vinyl tile is being installed in the health office, student services office and hallways, as well as carpet tile in staff offices. Classrooms and library are mostly carpet tile. Science labs, Makerspace lab, and art room will have epoxy flooring installed.

To enhance the installation of new flooring and provide our staff and students with a “fresh” appearance, the Cholla facility staff and maintenance paint crew have been busy applying new coats of paint to walls and interior door frames and railing.

At Abraham Lincoln Traditional, renovations to the building’s exterior, new lobby, the health tech’s office, teachers’ workroom and new student restrooms are moving along! At Sunburst, new playground equipment has been installed and new shade structure will be completed before the end of the month.

CITY MANAGER’S REPORT:

Social Services Delivery On June 27, the Volunteer Income Tax Association (VITA) Program concluded its summer tax preparation session. During the months of May and June, approximately 23 VITA volunteers assisted 113 residents with 140 tax returns at the Sunnyslope and John F. Long Family Service Center VITA sites. The summer program assisted residents with receiving $125,554 in federal refunds. Community and Economic Development Department staff and a DES Veteran Representative from the West Job Center presented to a group of 26 homeless Veterans in need of employment at the Veterans Hospital. These Veterans reside at transitional living homes such as Manna House, US Vets and Walton House. The attendees are paid a stipend, through the Veterans Hospital, to assist them as they take the steps to regain their lives and return to employment. As of today, two Veterans reported to the West Job Center to enroll in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program. The Career Advisor and Veteran Representative plan to team up on a monthly basis to attend these help groups.

Public Safety The Phoenix Fire Department is collecting water donations for the homeless at Phoenix fire stations throughout the month of July. Every week, Phoenix firefighters will deliver the donated water to Central Arizona Shelter Services. In addition, Fire personnel are collaborating with 96.3 Real Country Radio for live broadcast events promoting the donation drive. On June 9, the State Transportation Board approved $3.7 million in funding for a pilot project that will alert the public of wrong-way vehicles. The I-17 Wrong Way Driving Detection project is a first-in-the-nation thermal detection system which will detect wrong-way vehicles and alert the other drivers and law enforcement of them on I-17 from Interstate 10 to Loop 101. The system will use thermal cameras, warning signs for wrong-way drivers and advisories for right-way drivers along this 15-mile stretch of I-17 (construction at all traffic interchanges within these limits). Construction is scheduled to begin in August 2017. During construction, two traffic interchanges will be closed each weekend to traffic on City streets. ADOT will not allow construction to occur at the same time on adjacent interchanges. Staff will provide specific information regarding construction dates and locations to the Mayor and Council offices once it is available.

Infrastructure Public Transit has been working with interns from the ASU Herberger School for Design and the Arts, School of Industrial Design to collaborate on providing more shade at bus stops. Public Transit worked with ASU professors to develop a design contest where freshmen, junior and graduate students created design concepts. Four students were chosen to serve as interns. T-Y Lin, an engineering firm on the City’s on-call professional services list, has been contracted to provide engineering and structural assistance for future designs. Public Transit staff are meeting weekly with the ASU interns and T-Y Lin to review design concepts and provide input as it pertains to constructability, accessibility, and general guidance.
