Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel reminds me that Jesus was a teacher. And as any good teacher, He knew that the best way to reach His students to was to give them the information in a way that they could comprehend it. In this case, He used the parable of the sower and seeds. This parable seems to be relatively straightforward and easy to understand. The seeds that Jesus speaks of need the rich soil in order to flourish and bear fruit, hundred, or thirty, or sixty fold—and we of course know that seeds need good soil in order to grow. Seeds that miss the soil, are sown on rocky ground, or are sown among other plants, will not grow.

However, as we know, Jesus, as in all of His parables, is not talking about seeds, but He uses seeds as a vehicle to help those listening understand a deeper concept. Jesus knows that the listener understands what seeds need in order to grow and therefore uses this prior knowledge as an entry point. The hearer though must engage in some degree of reflection in order to comprehend the message of a parable. In this way, the medium—the parable—models the point of the parable of the sower. Those who are willing to engage themselves in the effort to understand will be rewarded by the discovery of the message and will bear fruit.

To bring home the point, Jesus interprets the parable of the sower to his disciples. The different types of soil in which the seeds are sown are metaphors for the disposition with which each individual hears the teaching about the kingdom of heaven. Some will be easily swayed away from the kingdom of heaven. Some will receive it for a time but will lose it when faced with difficulties. Some will hear the word but will then permit other cares to choke it out. Yet some will re-ceive it well, and the seed will produce abundant fruit. Here, with His disciples, Jesus is able to further explain the par-able as the disciples are more rooted in their faith and ready for a deeper understanding, as they themselves will soon be the ones doing the teaching.

Jesus as teacher is important to me, as I am a teacher first and foremost. However, I am only able to do my work as a teacher with the support of the first teachers of my students: their parents. Families, in particular, hold the responsibility for “preparing the soil” so that the seeds of God’s Word can grow strong. There are many ways in which families do this—family traditions in which faith is celebrated, prayer and reading of Scripture, and instruction on the faith. In these ways, parents fulfill the promises they made at their child’s Baptism. The parents are the primary educators of their chil-dren, and it is only with them that, we, at the school are able to create an environment where the students can be success-ful. I am thankful each day for our parents and the foundation that they provide their children.

During the summer vacation, it is a good time to reflect and see how I can continue to nourish my “soil” as I prepare for a new school year. I reflect, thinking of the following questions: What type of soil is my faith growing in? Do I need to change it? If so, how might I? As I reflect in these questions, I will grow deeper in the promises that were made at my Baptism by my first educators.

Blessings,

Elizabeth Trela

PEACEMAKERS When Francis became Pope, it was not a luminary he chose to quote at his first Mass, but his grandmother, Rosa. He often quotes her, and on that day, he talked about her insight into the fleeting nature of wealth, that “a burial shroud does not have pockets.” Perhaps the deep-est imprint Rosa left on Francis is the idea that faith in a loving God is bound up with compassion and mercy, and that rules of religion are meant to serve people rather than the other way around. Pope Francis set four pillars for his life: Personal closeness and service to the poor Popular faith and devotion of the people. Church as missionary – changing a passive faith into an active one – that gets into the street and meets people where they live Less importance of clerical privilege – not as involved in the politics of the Church. When the Pope was elected, what people didn’t really grasp is that they were not just electing a CEO, but they were electing Rosa’s grandson, a be-liever who lived a life of real faith – more about compassion than rigidity, more about seeing the good in others than in find-ing fault, and that words need to be followed by effective ac-tion. Taken from John L. Allen, Jr, in Francis: The Pope’s Bold Message comes to America. Have you considered what your four pillars will be? Social Justice Committee

New Altar Server Needed! Dear Parents/Guardians of Fourth grade students or Higher grade:We would like to invite your child (ren) to become Altar Servers for the Queen of Apostles Parish. I hope you encourage and allow to them to join in this service. It will take their time from both you and them. However, it will be a beautiful way for your child (ren) to express their active participation in the life of the Church and learn how to become a responsible member of the church. I hope that you consider our invitation and share it with your child (ren). The plan is to have the training on August 19th from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM. After the training has been completed, your child (ren) will “shadow” one of the current more Senior level Servers to gain a better sense of this Ministry. If you and your child (ren) are interested, please contact the Parish office at 408.253.7560. God Bless!
