In today’s gospel (Matt. 13: 1-23) Jesus says life is like a farmer who plants his field, and expects nature’s cooperation, confident that he has done his part. The farmer is bold, nurturing, respon-sive to the world around him. He cannot afford to hide from or close off the world around him if he expects a good harvest. He knows the right amount of rain will help his labor. As the see and the right amount of rain will produce growth it also brings forth weeds. There are, then, good and bad possibilities in life, failures to be confronted and success to be reaped. No one can judge by the individual growing seasons. Only the final harvest at the end of our life will justify our failures and reward our labor. The spiritual lesson of the story is if we want to have a rich bountiful life we must plant ourselves in good soil. The seed of the story is not defined by itself, but by its relationship to the soil, the sun, the birds, and the rain…in short its environment. All the seed cast by the farmer identical. By interaction with its sur-roundings, however, the seed either lives or dies. The lesson is that all people are equal having been created by God and that we are also dependent upon one another. We too are affected by our environment as we grow. Studies show that those who suffer abuse as a child are a greater risk of being abusers of their chil-dren. If one is addicted to drugs and hangs out in an environment where drugs are easily available it is going to be very difficult if not impossible to “kick” the drug habit. All of this is to say we must create good environments for our children to grow up in and be formed in Christian values, and just as importantly we adults must be aware of the environment we live in. Striving to live a Christian life in today’s world is a difficult challenge as our values compete with other “worldly” values of greed and power. Sometimes we fail, sometimes we succeed, and sometimes we are in the middle, not knowing which way to go---or what to do when we are confronted with difficult choices in our life. The chief moral responsibility we have as Christians is to always choose the path that will bring about the greatest good. It may not be the easiest path…but will certainly be the path that leads to God. Fr. Bill

Padre Bill

The Basilian Fathers were founded as a religious congregation in France in 1822. The original members chose St. Basil the Great, a fourth century teacher, Bishop and doctor of the Church, to be the namesake of the new community. At the invitation of Bishop de Charbonnel, the Basilians estab-lished a presence in Toronto, Canada in 1852, founding schools and parishes. Their work commended invitations from Bishops to help build the faith in the United States all the way to Texas in 1899 with the creation of St. Basil's College in Waco. In 1900, Bishop Nicholas Gallagher invited the Basilans into the Diocese of Galveston where they established St. Thomas College. Later, the Bishop entrusted St. Anne's Church and St. Mary's Seminary to them. The Basilians responded to the Bishop's requests to minister to the poor Spanish speaking in the diocese. By 1939, a mission center was established in Rosenberg, Texas, from which Basilians served the poor in the large area from Waco to Brownsville, Texas. In 1955 the mission office was relocated to its present location in Sugar Land, Texas. During the years, the Basilian Priests and parishioners built church-es, schools, and clinics in the Texas towns of Waco, Houston, New Gulf, Wharton, Rosenberg, Allen Farm, Manvel, and Richmond,-among others. In 1961, the Basilians responded to Pope John XXlll's concern for the Mexican people. Basilian Fathers William (Max) Murphy, C.S.B. and Francis Launtrie, C.S.B. were eAtrusted with San Juan Crisostomo parish and missions by Cardinal Miguel Dario Miranda Gomez, Archbishop of Mexico, D.F. in October 1961. From which, the Basilian Fathers ministered to the spiritual and physical needs of the poor and needy in Mexico, building churches, clinics, schools and spirituality. In 1978, Parroquia de San Lorenzo and its chapels in Tehuacan, Mexico, was entrusted to the Basilians. The church dates back to the seventeenth century and contains artifacts with historical, religious, and cultural value. From here, six Basilian Priests serve the needs of the faithful in six other chapels, <;t clinic and the local hospital. Once a week, a Struck with the incredible economic, spiritual and educational pov-erty of the Colombians living in barrios outside the cities, the Ba-silian Fathers determined to establish a presence among the poor. In 1987 Most Reverend Pedro Rubiano Saenz, Archbishop of Cali (Valle), entrusted Parroquia Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion (Our Lady of the Assumption Parish) to the Basilian Fathers. The Basili-ans have directed the parish school, lnstituto Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion (INSA) since 1991. The school serves the primary grades through high school, and has become one of the most outstanding schools in the state of Valle. The incapacitated receive care in the Basilian hospice, Cristo de la Paz, from Mother Teresa of Calcutta's Sisters Basilian Priest goes to the local radio station Priests and delivers inspiring talks. Querida Comunidad de All Saints.
