Calves on the...Table??by Shelley Chauvet VonStein, Big Sandy, MontanaFeatured June 12, 2014 in Ranch Work

We spent several days last week branding. It is probably not one of my favorite tasks on the ranch -- it is hard and smoky work. Not to mention, I always feel a little sorry for the cows as they wait patiently outside the corral looking for their babies. I know, I know . . . I’m such a softy! But branding is a very necessary part of ranching. Our brandings are I guess what you could describe as “high tech.” There is more than just the sound of bawling cows and calves around our place on these days. The hum of a generator and a skid steer are all part of the background noise. We might be working in the

middle of nowhere . . . but hydraulics and electricity are both important ingredients to get calves on the table. The table I’m referring to is a calf table . . . . it is a scaled down chute made especially for calves. It is run off the hydraulics of the skid steer. We don’t have a huge crowd of people helping us, we operate with a small crew made up of mostly family. A good lookin’ bunch . . . don’t you think? Now that is a look of concentration! The “high tech” equipment reduces the number of people needed to make these days

possible. . . not to mention none of us are getting any younger, and we’d all be popping Advil like M&Ms if we had to wrestle all of these calves! Most of these babies in this bunch are at least 2 months old and can easily weigh 200 lbs. or more. Our calf table works best with larger calves, so that’s why we now do our brandings in June. This table is actually a rather ingenious piece of equipment . . . It makes the branding process pretty safe for both the calves and the people who are working. Who knew calves on the table could be such a good thing! Getting the calves on the table is probably the toughest job. The calves are pushed from the tub into the alley. This is usually Mike’s job . . . I took this photo early in the day . . . you can tell . . . because he is still smiling! He ends up doing a lot of pushing and pulling to get these big calves going the right direction. Certainly a work out . . . that’s fore sure! Someone else moves the calf up the alley into the chute. The tail gate is closed as the calf goes in the chute. With the touch of the hydraulic lever, the rib and neck restraints are moved into place. Like on an electronic game, the levers on the side of the chute control it’s every move. With the movement of another lever, the chute gently tips to the side . . .

laying the hefty calf out flat. Our calves are branded on their left hip with an electric iron . . . hence the reason for the generator.Add in shots, an ID tag, a fly tag, an implant and a dose of dewormer, and this guy is done in about a minute.

Once again, with the touch of a lever, the calf is put back up on his feet. He is finished and ready to get out. The gates are opened and back out he goes with the others. Happy to be free, no worse for wear, sporting new hardware to commemorate his day as one of the calves on the table!
