It has been an interesting month from the “Chicken” to good and cold weather riding conditions, KZN remains one of the best places to ride in. Well we did not get the Kawa ZX14 for review due to stock related issues but we managed to put two reviews together for you nonetheless. As you will see, we have a few new faces in this issue, yes from advertisers to staff. To all the new advertisers, a heartfelt WELCOME from all of us at Bike Talk and to those advertising again, thank you for your ongoing support and for believing and trusting in this communication tool. In the end, it’s here to serve you and your loyal following of customers.I again invite all advertisers to please send us your Event Dates which will be placed in the “What’s on Calendar” helping you maximize attendance, and that goes for Run or Event Feedback. Some of you have already met William, who started with us in the beginning of June, he is here to look after your business advertising

needs and also do a review every once in a while. Give him a call ...I managed to get up to Richardsbay and Empangeni last month meeting some of the dealers up there, thank you to those who received me well. Well-done to Affordable Bikes in Richardsbay for taking the initiative and being the fi rst from that area to advertise with us.I would also like to apologise for down-time on the website, we’ve recently moved offi ces and Telkom took their usual time to move our ADSL and telephone lines. As soon as we’re on-line again we’ll update the website with the latest news and mag articles for your viewing. Here is to another issue of Bike Talk, maybe the best so far, eager to improve on every previous issue. We are continuously looking for lucrative distribution channels through which we can reach more readers for you, any thoughts or suggestions will sincerely be appreciated. keeping it up by Hein Jonker

Group RidingMotorcycling is primarily a solo activity, but for many, riding as a group -- whether with friends on a Sunday morning ride or with an organized motorcycle rally -- is the epitome of the motorcycling experience. Here are some tips to help ensure a fun and safe group ride:Arrive prepared. Arrive on time with a full gas tank.Hold a riders’ meeting. Discuss things like the route, rest and fuel stops, and hand signals. Assign a lead and sweep (tail) rider. Both should be experienced riders who are well-versed in group riding procedures. The leader should assess everyone’s riding skills and the group’s riding style.Keep the group to a manageable size, ideally fi ve to seven riders. If necessary, break the group into smaller sub-groups, each with a lead and sweep rider.Ride prepared. At least one rider in each group should pack a cell phone, fi rst-aid kit, and full tool kit, so the group is prepared for any problem that they might encounter.Ride in formation. The staggered riding formation (see diagram below) allows a proper space cushion between motorcycles so that each rider has enough time and space to maneuver and to react to hazards. The leader rides in the right third of the lane, while the next rider stays at least one second behind in the right third of the lane; the rest of the group follows the same pattern. A single-fi le formation is preferred on a curvy road, under conditions of poor visibility or poor road surfaces, entering/leaving highways, or other situations where an increased space cushion or maneuvering room is needed.Avoid side-by-side formations, as they reduce the space cushion. If you suddenly needed to swerve to avoid a hazard, you would not have room to do so. You don’t want handlebars to get entangled.Periodically check the riders following in your rear view mirror: If you see a rider falling behind, slow down so they may catch up. If all the riders in the group use this technique, the group should be able to maintain a fairly steady speed without pressure to ride too fast to catch up.If you’re separated from the group, don’t panic. Your group should have a pre-planned procedure in place to regroup, don’t ride beyond your skills to catch up.For mechanical or medical problems, use a cell phone to call for assistance as the situation warrants.

REVIEW - HONDA CRf 250rREVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRISThanks to Stefan at Honda Pinetown for organizing this review, and for getting the bike to and from the track.

OVERVIEWThe CRF250R is Honda’s fi nest offering into the 250cc MX competition arena. Power comes from a liquid cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke boasting 31.5kW at 11 000rpm and 29.2Nm at 9500rpm. Straight from the outset it is obvious that this is a track focused tool. Just a quick glance at the motor and realization hits that CRF is on the cutting edge of technology. This is not a bike “for the whole family”. Respect is due and necessary, or you will taste dirt in no time at all.

CONGRATULATIONS HONDA, THEY’RE TWINS!The immediate standout on the ‘06, of course, is the twin pipes tucked neatly in under the number panels, the purpose of which Honda claim, are to sharpen power delivery and give smoother, more responsive handling. Well, they certainly look impressive! This bike is extremely well balanced and gave me lots of confi dence in the air. The low centre of gravity, thanks to the radiator being mounted 5mm lower than the ’05 model, was a major part of it, and the parallel pipes, if anything, seemed to add to the impeccable balance. Front and rear adjustable Showa suspension has been improved for extra bump absorption, giving a beautifully smooth ride whilst providing plenty of feel; landings especially felt solid, but not hard, and yet forgiving at the same time. Suspension has come a long way over the years, and this is as good as it gets. The 240mm discs front and rear bring you to a halt as quick as you could wish for on dirt. The front dual-piston calliper felt especially strong adding to the confi dence factor that just seems to grow with every minute on the Honda. The acceleration from low down is astounding; remember that this is a four-stroke, so the power curve is far more usable than a two. Bringing the front up at any speed is an absolute breeze with loads of grunt being the order of the day. Top end is there as well, but the bottom and mid range is so impressive that it is a little overshadowed.

MULTI TALENTED? This is a motocross sensation with podium spots to prove it, but what about trails, sand, hills and the like? Can she “do it all”? In my humble opinion, indeed! The CRF’s handling is agile, sharp and responsive, thanks to its light weight and balance with perfectly matched suspension. Add to the mix smooth and practical acceleration and you have yourselves a fantastic trail bike. In the sand you realize how light this bike really is, with the low centre of gravity giving the impression of being even more so. At a 93.3kg dry weight the Honda is truly a lightweight, but don’t think for a moment that translates to weakling! The twin-spar aluminium frame is absolutely solid and crafted to withstand a serious hammering. Weight loss from last year’s model is due to a few minor changes including shorter and lighter front fork outer tubes, a lighter and stronger front wheel hub, and a lighter swing-arm construction, but the exhaust system is a little heavier and brings the actual total to about half a kilo heavier than the ’05.

OVERALL RATINGAll around, Honda has put together a captivating machine that is practically race ready, whilst being a brilliant all rounder. If you are looking at getting into motocross seriously or just want to leave your friends in the dust out in the bush, get yourselves down to Honda Pinetown and organize a test ride. I give it two thumbs up!

REVIEW - BMW K1200sREVIEW BY WILLIAM MORRISFirst off, we’d like to thank Ian and Shaheen at Auto Umhlanga for affording us the privilege of testing this beauty.

FIRST IMPRESSIONStyling is elegant, sharp and aggressive, giving an overall impression of brutal power. This machine oozes refi nement and sophistication. Powerplant is an across the frame, in-line four; a rarity in BMW stables. The 1157cc engine is compact in design allowing a beautifully sleek and slender build. Build quality is top notch - no surprises, considering its heritage and price tag. Judge this book by its cover, it tells no lies.

CONTROLS AND GADGETSPlacements of basic controls are different than Jap bikes and take a couple minutes to get use to, but once you do, the arrangement is user friendly and actually makes sense. Heated grips are standard and have two temperature options.

PERFORMANCEMax power output is 123kW at 10,250rpm; torque a mighty 130Nm at 8,250rpm. Delivery is powerful and smooth all the way though but starts getting real exciting over 7,000rpm. Once in movement this 227.5kg Beemer feels light and can easily be fl icked from side to side. Handling is positive and confi dent, with a hint of playfulness; a truly delightful ride. Braking is a phenomenal experience, thanks to BMW’s Motorrad Integral ABS, giving the rider absolute peace of mind at any speed, or even at any angle. This is one bike you can actually brake mid-curve, thanks to the brand new suspension design up front. This unconventional setup, called Duolever, negates all diving motion, giving you far more control under heavy braking.

COMFORTBMW has taken a giant leap forward with its world-fi rst (in a series production motorcycle) Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) which has 3 options: comfort, normal and sport, which allow you to adjust suspension on the fl y to suit riding style. Set it on “comfort” and I swear they quickly slip an extra bit of cushion in the seat; it just soaks up the bumps and makes cruising an absolute pleasure. Sport mode was my personal favourite and made peg scraping a breeze, the whole bike seemed to stiffen up allowing the rider complete confi dence in critical sections. As usual, BMW has considered the pillion rider, whose seating position is roomy and comfortable. I felt that the clutch was very stiff, which got a little tiresome after a while. There was also a fair amount of engine vibration from just under 6,000rpm till about 7,000rpm, but other than that, the twin balance shafts make this one smooth operator.

RUNNING COSTClaimed fuel consumption at 120km/h is 5.5 l/100km. With tank capacity at 19 litres that should get you about 345km, assuming you drive like a fairy. We travelled a bit over 250km (distance, not speed!) in a day (albeit sometimes heavy-handedly) and pretty much fi nished a tank.

OVERALL RATINGA truly multi-talented machine, outstanding in so many areas, makes driving the K1200S one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have on a bike. Can perfection be reached? I am giving this one 9/10!

who to buzz

JUST FOR FUNThis month I had the enjoyment of riding the Kawasaki ER-6F for an entire weekend. What a beautiful bike! This Kawa looks fantastic and drew admiration from all. The rear shock integrated into the frame and the low lying bullet exhaust are the standout features. This bike’s purpose is to offer an entry level into sport biking that looks great, is easy to ride, promotes confi dence and has decent power too. In my opinion, they have achieved this fabulously. The low rider’s position offers the beginner a more “in control” feeling, as well as a viable option for those of you who are, shall we say, vertically challenged. Ladies, are you looking to get off the back of hubby’s crotch rocket and onto your own milder mannered speedster? The ER-6 may be the perfect fi t.For a 650 twin I thought there was plenty of power on tap. On the freeway this bike felt really stable and comfortable, and the fairing does a splendid job of protecting its rider. This bike does 2-up as well, with a decent pillion seat and pegs that have been positioned with comfort in mind. So for those of you who would like the pillion to be in as good a mood as you are at the end of the trip, check out this well balanced machine!

Thank you to Bruce at DMC (Durban Motorcycle Centre) for arranging this great bike for us – William Morris

words of wisdomNo Root, No FruitHave you ever wondered why you do what you do?One former Navy pilot tells how he was living a wilder life than he knew he should live. He decided his problem was that he was being led astray by his friends in fl ight training. So he arranged to fi nish his work in the program early and be transferred to another fi eld nearby. Yet, it wasn’t long, he said, before he was back in the same old bars, with the same girls, just with different friends. One night out-on-the-town he wondered, “Why do I do this?” And he realized, “Because I like to.”Before a person becomes a Christian-I mean a real Christian, not just someone who says he is-his “want-to” is broken. He is not interested in God. He is bored by church and by reading his Bible. He cannot “make” himself “want to” do right and he cannot “make” himself “want not” to do wrong. When a person is born again, God repairs his “want-to.” Even though he still feels the pull of temptation, he will have a new set of desires. He will love God and want to talk to God in prayer and see what God has to say to him in His Word, the Bible. He wants to be around other people who love God; church attendance becomes meaningful. There is a new desire to obey God.Why do we do what we do? The answer is simple: we do what we do because of what we are. It’s like fruit trees. Apple trees bear apples, pear trees produce pears, peach trees grow peaches. The fruit is the natural result of the nature of the tree. I suppose you could tie apples to a peach tree, but that would not make it an apple tree. In the same way, adding religious activities to one’s schedule doesn’t make one a Christian. Just as the fruit of the tree naturally fl ows from the nature of the tree, even so the attitudes, words, and actions of our lives reveal the true nature of ourselves.Jesus said, “Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit....Therefore, by their fruits you will know them” - eSWORD
