The Louisville Bridge Club has recently re-vamped our bridge center, replacing worn furniture to make it a more pleasant place to
play. The club is quite comfortable now and with our Summer Lesson Series in full swing, we are welcoming many new players. To all of our fellow District 11 members; we extend an invitation to stop in and join us for a game should you be passing through Louisville. Our calendar is posted on our web site: www.louisvillebridgeclub.com – there are games every day, two games most days; please join us if you are able. Our schedule for the rest of the summer and early fall will be quite full. Like many of you, we will be participating in the STaC Tournament during the first week of July. In August, we are hosting The Louisville Luau 299er Sectional Tournament on the 9th and 10th. And in October, our Fall Barren River Sectional Tournament is on the 3rd through 5th. Please make note of the advertising flyers in this issue of the Monitor for the game schedules. We hope you will all plan to attend these events. In March of 2011, District 11 is sponsoring the Spring North American Bridge Championship to be held in Louisville. The entire District is working together to raise funds to make sure that we can put on the best NABC possible. Each club in our District is invited to hold special games during NABC Promotional Games Week. Masterpoints awarded will carry full sectional-rated black points, with session and overall awards at each game. The event will begin this Labor Day, 2008, and continue for that full week. All clubs in our District may
choose which regular club games will designated as part of this series. There will be an extra charge for these games, $4.00 per table, which will be used to help build the war chest for this event. We encourage you to participate in as many games as possible during NABC Promotional Games Week to help us generate the funds necessary to support the Louisville 2011 Spring NABC in a manner that will make us all proud to be District 11 members. A major bridge event will take place in Louisville this September, Monday the 15th though Thursday the 18th: The Warren Buffett Cup, the transatlantic challenge match being held for the second time, will be played at the Galt House in downtown Louisville. This event is modeled on the golf’s Ryder Cup series. It is played every two years, during the same week as the Ryder Cup and the format will include individual, pairs and team games played by the 12 leading players from Europe against the 12 leading North American Players. The LBA is acting as host for this event and is already hard at work preparing our best Louisville welcome for our visitors. The matches will be shown live at the Galt House on vugraph, with a team of expert commentators led by Eric Kokish. If you are unable to attend, most of the matches will also be shown live online at www.brigebaseonline.com. Spectators can log in for free and watch the matches as they take place. There will be a daily bulletin by British bridge author, Brian Senior, also available as an Internet edition. Plan on attending, virtually or in person – this is a wonderful chance to kibbitz the best bridge players from around the world in an exciting competition.

Would you believe the pig roared? Probably not, but the Cincinnati Bridge Association’s “Flying Pig” spring
Regional was certainly a squealing success. Check this out: 1) It surpassed the record-setting 2007 edition by 50 tables! Total count: 1221. 2) The special “Derby Day Dinner” (guests watched the race on big screen TV and enjoyed a multi-course dinner between the afternoon and evening games) was a turnaway sell-out. 3) The nightly post game hospitality at a nearby hotel received rave reviews. Hats off to Tourney Chair Patti English and her committee volunteers for making it all happen. The top point winner at the “Flying Pig” was Amit Raturi who scored an amazing 102.85 points! He was followed by: William Higgins, Nancy Sachs, Yauheni Siutsau, Norman Coombs, Marhall Tuly, Frank Treiber III, Rhonda Munro, Marcin Lesniewski and Jerzy Zaremba. In the NLM category Alice Price and Charlene Comeaux won the Non-Life Master Trophy for the second year in a row. The event also saw six local players earn Life Master Rankings: Sue Mandell, Suzanne

Sale, Bruce & Mary Smith, Courtney Thurman and John Woeste. Other CBA members climbing the master point ladder are: New L.M & Bronze: Patricia Myers; Bronze: David Britt. Michiko Natsume, Melanie Onnen, and Yauheni Siutsau; Silver: Gerry Mirus; Diamond: Ronald Babcock. Congratulations & Onward!! MARK YOUR CALENDERS: We have two great events coming up: First, there’s Middletown Sectional in August (see the ad in this issue). Second, “Octoberbest” in October. The CBA has a new home for its Fall Sectional. It will be held at the UAW 647 Hall, 10020 Reading Road. Our ad in this issue gives details of the games, but there wasn’t room for a map, so here are directions: From I-71 take exit 15 (Pfeiffer Road which becomes Glendale-Milford) Go West to Reading Road. Turn left (south) on Reading. The Union Hall will be on your left. From I-75 take exit 14 (Glendale-Milford Road) east to Reading Road. Turn right (south) The Union Hall will be on your left. We look forward to seeing you there!!

miami valley bridge assoCiaTionBonnie Papini, Reporting
Everyone in the Miami Valley Bridge Association welcomed spring with relief and excitement. That the snow and
cancelled bridge games were past was a relief and that the construction of the new bridge center accelerated caused excitement. Photos of the construction displayed at the center on Tonawanda Trail had many interested viewers and carpet and tile samples excited much comment. Plans to move to the new location are in progress. The architect’s drawings of the new center have been on display at Tonawanda Trail. Lots of players noted that the architect who drew the plans (or the programmer who designed the computer aided design program) could not possibly be a bridge player. How did they know? The tables illustrating the design were ROUND! Speaking of inexpert bridge players, Logan County has provided a little humor for this quarter’s edition:
One Wish A bridge duffer was polishing a lamp and . . . POOF! Out popped a genie who said, “I will grant
you one wish.” The duffer unfolded a map of the world and said, “Let all these countries live in peace and harmony.” “Youíve got be kidding! I’m only a genie!” The duffer thought for a bit and then suggested, “Okay, then make me a winning bridge player.” “Hmmmm . . .” the genie pondered. “Let me see that map again.”
All kidding aside, bridge was great in April with lots of charity games at the bridge center, awarding lots of points. April and May saw the first “Bridge in the Barn” Swiss teams of 2008 with eight teams playing in the Logan County events. Late April and early May found lots of Miami Valley players in Sharonville at the Flying Pig Regional.

Marvin Lawson, Reporting
Eugene “Mr. Bridge” Cain, one of the founding members of the EDBC in the early 1950s, passed away in late May; he
was a Gold LM. Gene taught bridge for decades and had been celebrated in both the Evansville Courier and Evansville Living Magazine for his accomplishments and teaching skills. Family and friends, partners and students - we are all diminished by this great loss. Sue Taylor coordinated Supervised Play on the four Sat. mornings in April. LMs were the “fifth chairs” at tables of 199er players, making useful comments on bidding and play. EDBC added two new games to their schedule in 2008: the 99er game on Tues. aft. which has been averaging 3½-4 tables and the Open game on Fri. aft. has been averaging 6 tables. In addition, we have had the first two of several Unit Championships on Sat. afts., with 14½ tables at the game in April. Seems like there was a lot of pent-up demand for all these added games. Congrats to Connie Gustafson who made Gold LM in May. When her friends threw a party to commemorate this achievement, 12 tables were there to honor her, including players from 5 other clubs in the Unit. Congrats also to Willie Alley who made Silver LM; and to our 3 new LMs: Becky Becker, Jackie Brasseale, and Carol Druckamiller. Congratulations to Bonnie Lawson & Pete Lambert who had another 70% game on Wed., night, Mar. 6. On Wed., March 13, we had a charity game for the YMCA. Strats A & B N/S - Janet Robinson & Marvin Lawson; E/W A was Sue Donaldson & Richard Cornett; B–Gail Snowden & David Alexander. On Wed., Apr. 2, ACBL Charity, N/S, A-Bonnie Lawson & Susie Hill; B–Louise Oglesby & Marcie Harding; E/W, A–Joanne Wright & Pete Lambert; B–Billie Floyd
& Mayola Montgomery. Wed., Apr. 23, ACBL Charity, A & B-Willie Alley & Sue Donaldson; C-Joyce Rice & Richard Norsworthy. Wed., Apr. 30, Club Championship, A B & C-Nan Rand & Bill Sullivan. At the Owensboro DBC on Fri., Mar. 21, Club Championship, Strat. A- Carol Krehbiel & John Fullenwider; B-Doris Mills & JoAnn Witt; C-Mary Witter & Pat Long. On Mar. 31, Mon., A B & C were Linda & Richard Edds. On Mon., Apr. 14, N/S, A-Don Hayes & Tim Henn; E/W, A B & C, Pat & Gary Satterwhite. On Fri., May 2, ACBL Charity, A & B, Frances & Joe Lewis; C-Mary Witter & Pat Long. The Madisonville DBC regrets to inform us that one of bridge’s most ardent supporters lost a dear friend, Dr. Claude Williams, who passed away in April. Claude dearly loved the game of bridge and attended many out-of-town games and tournaments. His presence is sadly missed in Madisonville. On a positive note, it’s good to have both the Lawsons back in the swing of things (and winning, as usual!!). The Madisonville DBC held a Jr. Fund Game on Thurs., Feb. 28. N/S winners were Don Hayes & John Fullenwider; E/W A-David Smithfield & Richard Cornett; B-Dick Dickeson & Joyce Rice; C-Joan Morse & Dot England. At the Tues. Club Championship on Apr. 29, N/S, Ann Owen & Bonnie Metcalfe; E/W Richard Cornett & Pete Lambert. Three exceptional games were scored recently. On Mar. 25, Gail Snowden & Richard Cornett had a 70.98% game. On Apr. 27, Connie Parent & Richard Cornett score 71.88%. (Richard has had a good run!). Then on March 27, David Smithfield & Paul Merrell score a whopping 72.32% game.

While pigs flew in Sharonville, time was flying toward the Flying Buckeye Regional. Hard to believe but it is just around the corner beginning July 29th. It’s time to get your partnerships firmed up and ready to go for a great regional. Last year was this reporter’s first time at the Flying Buckeye and it was great. Don’t miss it! May 18th was the Medallion Game at the Miami Valley Bridge Center. Wayne O’Connor recognized Ace of Club and Mini McKenny winners and everyone enjoyed a great lunch. Bev Dana, Ms. Hospitality, set up the room and prepared a great roast. The players responded with a dizzying variety of side dishes, salads and desserts. No one could have been hungry at the end. Twelve well fed pairs contested the Medallion Game after lunch, with Joanne Coyle and Ronald Babcock emerging victorious. Congratualtions! While spring brought green leaves and flowers to the Miami Valley, it also transported sorrow in the loss of two of our members, Rosalie Carter and Frank Murphy. They will be remembered. Until the next edition, play lots and have fun! Thanks for reading.

I remind you that the new cell phone ban discussed in my last report goes into effect in Las Vegas. (That report, with the text of the new policy, is posted on the District website.) I’m sure a lot of your players are planning on going--they’re expecting to shatter NABC attendance records--and it may be a good idea to remind them about the new policy.
I just heard from Memphis that a member is going to set up a “checking” service in Las Vegas. Obviously, she has no idea how well it will work so we shall see. Her charge will be $3.00--no ins and outs.
Hope to see you all in Vegas!
