President’s ColumnDavid Stone

June was a very busy month and, with our activities, we raised some significant cash for our charities. The two pancake breakfast meetings were very

successful. Thanks to the generosity of our members and the restaurants where we meet, we raised more than $680, which will be divided between Casa Pacifica and the Unity Shoppe.

As I write this column, our 45th Anniversary celebration is history. It was a very special event and one we won’t soon forget. With sold out registration of 212, it was the largest event of its kind ever held by the Santa Barbara Region. Thanks to all of you who gave of your time, your effort and your resources to ensure an enjoyable and successful afternoon. And thanks to our members for coming out and supporting our charities. You are the best! See Nick’s story beginning on page ten.

We will be reconciling the receipts for the next several days and connecting with those lucky winners of the silent auction who had to leave before claiming their gifts. But I can tell you that the early indication is that our charities will be very pleased with the results.

As we continue into the summer months, there’s a full lineup of activities to enjoy. So read your Der Auspuff, sign up early and take advantage of the many opportunities in store for you in the coming months. In the meantime, drive carefully, and we’ll see you soon.

day, which will include a BBQ lunch and plenty of gifts for the kids. Anyone who has a talent or would like to share time with the kids should contact Steve to join up.

Dave Stone then announced the upcoming events, including the 45th Anniversary Celebration at the Four Points Sheraton, the 13th Annual Chili Cook-Off on July 25, the Santa Barbara Autocross at Earl Warren Showgrounds on August 2, and the always popular Progressive Dinner on August 22.

The meeting adjourned by 10:00 a.m. with reminders to attend the Santa Barbara Pancake Breakfast to benefit our charities June 13 at Moby Dick’s on Stearns Wharf.

Pancakes Stack Up For CharityBy Randy & Sue Kinsling

The early morning drizzle did not dampen the spirits for the first of our two Charity Pancake Breakfasts. Our June Camarillo gathering featured a fixed-price offering of

pancakes to benefit Casa Pacifica and the Unity Shoppe, SBR’s designated charities for 2009. 109 members and guests filled the Way-Point Café, and 64 Porsches were carefully parked on the lawn.

Nancy Maletz, Valerie Weinstein and Susan Stone handled the breakfast tickets at a table just off the Way-Point patio. For $15, including tax and tip, members were treated to two pancakes,

sausage or bacon and a beverage with much of the proceeds going directly to our charities. Our thanks to the Way-Point management for accomodating us for this special breakfast event. Their cooperation is much appreciated.

President Dave Stone welcomed the generous crowd and introduced Membership Chair Janice Herndon. Janice recognized

new member Sean Meshkin from Thousand Oaks, who arrived in his 1994 968. Sean, along with his father Mohammad were the only attendees wearing suits, as they were going directly to work following our meeting.

First-time attendees introduced by Janice included Mohsen and Roxane Rabiee from Thousand Oaks with their 1989 911, and prospective member Spencer Thompson from Channel Islands in a 2007 997.

We were fortunate to also be joined by Ryan Hogan, guest of member Neil McAuliffe; Victor Castroll, son of member Jacob Castroll; and Rock La Spada, father of member John La Spada. Rock transferred from the Santa Barbara Region three years ago when he moved to Nevada and joined the Las Vegas Region.

Oscar Briones, who seldom misses a breakfast, was out of town, so Dave Stone recapped the upcoming club activities. Randy Kinsling spoke about the planned West Kern Oil Museum Tour & Picnic on June 27.

Dave then brought up Treasurer Steve Kaller who described a new event, Children’s Play Day at Casa Pacifica, scheduled for October 17, 2009. Steve is looking for volunteers to help entertain the children living at Casa Pacifica during a fun-filled

Promise yourself:To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness, and prosperity to every person you meet.To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true.To think only of the best, to work only for the best, and to expect only the best.To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,

And too happy to permit the presence of trouble.

feels pretty good and is active, he’s still not able to eat too much. We all wish him a speedy diagnosis and complete recovery.

New breakfast attendee, Dr. Denman Hammond of Santa Barbara, was welcomed by Membership Chair Janice Herndon. Dr. Denman’s 1999 Boxster is his fifth Porsche. He just moved to Santa Barbara and will transfer to SBR from the San Gabriel Region. For the past 50 years, he has taught at USC’s School of Medicine, and for the last 25 years, he’s been the Chairman of the Children’s Oncology Group.

SBR’s “Number One Car Guy,” Amil Garcia, attended the meeting in his new 2008 GT3 (his 22nd Porsche), a car that replaced his (crowd-pleasing) Audi R8. If you’re keeping track (and we are!), Amil has owned 47 cars in the past 18 years!

Wayne and Houri Greko decided to be on time for the 45th Anniversary event by booking a room at the Sheraton Four Points in Ventura for a two-night stay beginning on Friday. This allowed them plenty of time to attend the northern breakfast this month. We were glad to see them in Santa Barbara.

Jim Mosley was unable to attend the meeting because his Boxster was T-boned by two cars the week before. A “Get Well” card was signed by all wishing him a speedy recovery from some non-life-threatening fractures and multiple bruises. Unfortunately, the Boxster may have given up its life to save Jim’s.

Thanks to those who came out, and we hope to see you at one of the club’s many summer events!

As we left our home in Somis, the sun was nowhere to be seen. Not a mile away, the “June gloom” lifted for a beautiful, sunny day at Moby Dick’s on Stearns Wharf. The

question of the day was: “To pancake or not to pancake.” This being our second of two Pancake Charity Breakfasts in June, a price-fixed offering of pancakes and bacon again raised money for Casa Pacifica and Unity Shoppe.

The crowd of loyal SBR members was smaller than usual due to various graduations and members’ plans to attend the 45th Anniversary the next day. The 37 participants (in 27 Porsches) sounded more like 107 as they talked.

Nadine Tracy and Toni Briones collected money at the door for the pancake feast, adding $154 to the $533 netted last weekend in Camarillo. The two breakfasts totaled $687 in donations for our two designated charities.

President Dave Stone introduced Oscar Briones who announced the upcoming events for another busy summer. Dave reminded us that there will be a July 4 breakfast meeting in Camarillo and a tour on July 11 of the Unity Shoppe, following that morning’s Santa Barbara Breakfast.

The PCA/SBR 45th Anniversary Book is ready and will be available for $30 at the celebration and then, as supplies last, through The Goodie Store. Additionally, SBR logo grille badges are back after a long hiatus and are availble now, also priced at $30.

Kent Bodin thanked many in the crowd who had wished him well. He reported that in the month he turned 60, for the first time in

his life he was sick, spending ten days in the hospital. Doctors are still puzzled over his intestinal “issue.” He has had every test imaginable, but still no diagnosis. The doctors fed Kent a tiny self-contained camera to video his intestinal tract, and he is patiently waiting for the camera to “emerge” with its results. There was a request for a DVD from the crowd. Although Kent

Our club seldom needs a reason to celebrate. Almost every weekend there is one or more

club-sponsored events for our members to enjoy. Nonetheless, June 14, 2009 provided an extra-special incentive for a get-together. Two hundred eight SBR members and guests gathered at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura and celebrated the 45th anniversary of our region’s charter with The Porsche Club of America.

The Santa Barbara Region is one of the earliest regions of the national club. The original region territory was solely Santa Barbara County, but rapid expansion soon officially engulfed Ventura County (formerly part of the Los Angeles Region) and today we have many members from western Los Angeles County as well. Our roster today stands at about 725, nearly double what it was seven or eight years ago and triple that of the early 1990s.

In addition to membership growth, our region has been honored to have one of

its members serve as national president (Burt Misevic), another as national membership chair (Carolyn Ewbank), plus we have been blessed with numerous national honors including multiple

Heinmiller (best in the nation) awards for Der Auspuff. We were named as national Region of the Year as well as Zone 8 Region of the Year, and we have among us the recipients of the national Family

of the Year (the Hodsons) and Zone 8 Enthusiast of the Year (David Stone). Our long list of activities and charitable efforts has attracted national praise and honors.

The main entry to the hotel provided the first clue of the wonderful moments we were to savor. At the front door our sponsor for the celebration, Rusnak Westlake Porsche, positioned several new models under the porte cochère. They were joined by a number of member cars proudly displayed alongside. They jointly announced that this was to be a special Porsche Club day. No sooner had we entered the hotel’s lobby than everyone sensed that this would indeed be a very special day. First, we attacked the Sunday brunch buffet available in a room across the hall from the ballroom, which housed our meeting. Then we saw that the ballroom was decorated in the Porsche colors. The festive decorations made it appear as if we were in the Porsche factory lounge. Red, black and gold were everywhere. Music filled the room, and warm greetings were offered to everyone entering the banquet hall.

Our region’s history provides lots of reasons to celebrate, and all who attended will long remember the gathering. Preparation for the party commenced months ago as our region president, David Stone, chaired ad hoc committees entrusted with the tasks and responsibilities of presenting this festivity. It was clear that a lot of preparation went into the agenda for the day. For example, there were dozens and dozens of items produced for the silent auction. There were dozens more subject to the raffle drawings. (Proceeds from the silent auction and the raffle drawings are earmarked for distribution to the region’s designated 2009 charities.) Ron Williams developed an interesting and nostalgic photo display, and specially arranged music entertained throughout the afternoon.

Burt Misevic, in his current role as Region Archivist, published a beautiful memento coffee table book depicting scenes and personalities from our four and one-half decades of existence. The book attracted a lot of attention and sold briskly. (More copies will be made available as needed, through our Goodie Store.) Further, Burt took possession of the microphone and gave an oral and pictorial history of our region. The presentation was sprinkled

with personal, fascinating and humorous memories and recollections of club personalities and events.

Numerous special guests attended and were introduced. Among them were representatives of the three dealerships in our area: Rusnak Westlake, The Santa Barbara Auto Group and The Auto Gallery. Other sponsors, advertisers and supporters of the club were introduced and received a warm response from our membership. We were pleased that Michael Dolphin, our Zone 8 Representative, attended. However, the best was yet to come.

David Stone introduced several of our most senior club members, some of whom are charter members and others who have been members for more than 40 years. Among them were Ed Yates, Burt & Marge Misevic, and Anita Banke. Their membership is older than many of our members! The method by which they were introduced is most interesting and fun. Commonly known as the Membership Stand Down, all in attendance were asked to stand and then be seated based upon the number of years of their membership. Those with fewer years were the first to sit. It was intriguing to watch how many and who were standing when the count reached 30 years, then 35, then 40!

The honors continued as Dave introduced many of the club’s past presidents, 18 of whom were present, citing their service and efforts on behalf of the club. Attendees expressed their appreciation with a standing ovation! In addition, Dave thanked all the members of the anniversary committee for their hard work.

The raffle drawing occurred mid-afternoon. We adopted a revised process for the selection of the winning tickets. Instead of all tickets being placed in one “hat,” purchasers placed their tickets in paper bags in front of the item(s) they were most interested in winning. Therefore, each prize had its own drawing and ticket buyers were not burdened with items they did not desire. This was well accepted, and the winners were pleased.

The proceedings culminated with congratulatory salutations. All members should extend a warm “thank you” to Dave and Susan Stone and all the members of the 45th Anniversary Committee for their obvious hard work and evident dedication in presenting this most successful and memorable event. On to the 50th!

The discovery of gold at Sutter’s Mill in 1848 ushered a rush of migration to California by tens of thousands

seeking wealth and fortune. This past Memorial Day Weekend, it was members of the Santa Barbara Region that invaded California’s Mother Lode country! We were not looking for monetary riches, but we did find many rewards and treasures traveling more than 700 miles and experiencing a thousand smiles and laughs.

The trek to the Gold Country launched on Friday, May 22, as the 28 members in 20 Porsches embarked on a fabulous four-day adventure. We left Westlake Village just prior to 9 a.m. Our destination was the town of Sonora,

but first we planned a luncheon stop in Tulare along CA Highway 99. We continued our drive to Merced where we departed the major highway and followed CA Highway 59 north. This was a beautiful road passing through numerous hamlets and villages until it became county road 59J. It then transformed into a Porsche Road! Twists and turns, elevation gains and drops and fast straight-aways combined to excite the drivers and passengers. We picked up Highway 108 east into Sonora and the Best Western Sonora Inn. Dinner was at the Pines Restaurant where we enjoyed our meals in a private room that afforded us the opportunity to introduce each individual who made the trip.

The general plan for Saturday was to travel north on CA Highway 49, commonly known as The Mother Lode Road. It runs north-south connecting the many sites where gold was gouged from the earth. Rich with history and tales of success and mostly failures, the towns along this route flourished and then disappeared as gold was found and exhausted. Some towns had as many as 5,000 inhabitants, but now support populations in the low hundreds. Happily, many have been preserved or restored and now depend on tourism for their main source of revenue.

We departed the hotel at 8:30 on Saturday morning. Our first stop was in the old town of Sonora. It was too

early to enter shops, but that made parking on Highway 49 easy. At the north end of town stands Saint James Anglican Church, a structure painted in blood-red that appears as a sentinel protecting the village. It was a perfect photo opportunity. We resumed our northbound drive and entered the enclave of Angels Camp where shops were just opening for the day. It was an amazing sight as the 20 Porsches parked in an unbroken chain on the east side of Highway 49. Most tourists in the area were more interested in this spectacle than in what Angels Camp had to offer. Nonetheless, a local swap meet provided shopping intrigue for some of our members.

Angels Camp is the site of the annual Jumping Frogs of Calaveras County Competition held each May. Mark Twain ensured the town’s history with his famous short story. He wrote the descriptive and humorous work while living on nearby Jackass Hill, so named because the mules and donkeys bringing supplies to the miners would stop for a rest at the crest of the hill. The town has created a Walk of Fame for the annual winners, and the distances jumped accompany the names engraved on the sidewalk. Skeeter Eater reached 19.35 feet, while Oh Please made it to 20.925, just beating E. Davey Croakett, who made it to 20.3.

Farther up the road we invaded Jackson and parked on the west side of its Main Street. Once again, the town was ours as seemingly the entire street was lined with Porsches. The village

is showing signs of economic stress caused by the current recession. Even the parking meters were covered, providing three hours of free access. Still, Jackson will be remembered by our members because of an unplanned but surprising deviation from our agenda.

Located on North Main Street is Saint Sava’s Serbian Orthodox Church. It is the “Mother Church” of that faith in North America, built by Serb immigrants in the 1850s. The church building is small and is surrounded by a unique and fascinating cemetery. The early miners’ graves bear not only the birth and death statistics, but also photographs of the departed. While we were reading the tombstones, a local parishioner (a lady in her late 70s) appeared bearing flowers to mark a family member’s grave. She was excited to see us there and promptly called the

parish priest to open the church doors to display the interior. We were invited inside, and each of us marveled at the iconography and frescoes that decorated the walls, ceiling, floors and windows. The priest explained the reasons for and meanings of all the pictured stories, enlightening us on the evolution of the storytelling though images. (Upon departure, many of our members proclaimed that the orientation in and viewing of the church was the highlight of the entire weekend.)

The journey resumed with a visit to Sutter Creek, a town that sits on Old Highway 49, a road paralleling the main highway. Both sides of the main street are lined with shops and eateries. Lunch was scheduled for this location, but a bit of an irony was to take place. It was only minutes ago that we left Saint Sava’s when some of our members ordered lunch at The Palace Hotel, a structure that for decades housed the area’s bordello! By two o’clock we were on our way to Placerville and on to the town of Coloma where Sutter’s Mill and the John Marshall gold discovery site would be found. Following the discovery of gold, Coloma swelled to a population of over 5,000, but now only 200 residents call it home. We visited numerous reconstructed locations, such as the blacksmith’s shed and the obligatory saloon. We trekked down to the south fork of the American River and gazed at the exact spot where John Marshall first saw gold.

We now turned south on Highway 49, Continued on Page 20

retracing our route until we reached the north end of Angels Camp. We headed east on Murphy’s Grade Road to the town by that name. We stopped in the heart of the town for dinner at the historic Murphy’s Hotel. The meal was served upstairs in the Mark Twain Ballroom,

just down the hall from where Ulysses S. Grant, Mark Twain, Horatio Alger and even Black Bart stayed. Special attention was paid not to permit our members to share the dinner table with the same individuals as the preceding evening, thus assuring greater mingling among our members. Those who chose to ignore

this practice were subjected to $20 fines!Sunday, May 24 found us heading

southern end of the dam, prepared to walk across it and onto a trail that would lead us to the major waterfalls that feed the reservoir, a 5.5 mile round trip. The hike was exhilarating and exhausting, but the views and the sounds of the cataracts rewarded us well. It was here where we experienced our first and only mishap of the tour as one of our members tripped on a rock and suffered a scratched knee. No medical rescue was necessary as the scratch hardly bled. We returned Sunday night to Murphys for

dinner at The Ironstone Vineyards. A private room in the gorgeous winery was the setting.

Our final morning in Gold Country held its own special reward. We visited Columbia Historic State Park, a restored mining town that faithfully preserves the character and history of the wild times during the rush and the movement for

statehood. It has also served as a movie set for numerous Westerns, including High Noon. One of the homes, still occupied by private owners, served as the home for Grace Kelly’s character and is seen in the movie as the front porch where Gary Copper is warned and begged not to stand tall. Quickly,

it became our high noon, and we had to depart for our return trip home.

The four-day weekend came to an end, but the memories will last a lifetime. It is very pleasing to see how well our members respond to these adventures and how new friendships are made while old ones are cemented. This is what makes our region so special! =

Children’s Day At Casa PacificaSaturday, October 17, 2009

SBR Board Member Steve Kaller is organizing a special day for the kids living at Casa Pacifica in Camarillo. On Saturday, October 17, 2009, plan to bring your Porsche (or other unique vehicle) to Casa Pacifica for a BBQ Lunch and “play date” with the children.

Volunteers are being recruited to help gather “gifts” for every child. People with special talents - face painters, actors, story readers, ball players, game meisters, musicians, etc. - are sought for their skills in entertaining the children.

If you can help, we’re not asking for your money. We’d like a committment of your time. This event is our way of showing the Casa Pacifica kids that the Santa Barbara Re-gion truly cares about them.

Contact Steve Kaller today at [email protected] and let him know you’re on board for October 17.

Let’s Tour Unity ShoppeAfter SB Breakfast July 11th

Following the July 11 breakfast meeting at Moby Dick’s in Santa Barbara, the Club is invited to drive to the Unity Shoppe in downtown S.B. for a special tour of their facilities hosted by Executive Director Tom Reed.

The Unity Shoppe is a unique agency in America. “Unity” stands for the 288 social service agencies that refer over 20,000 low-income individuals to their Central Distribution Facility. “Shoppe” indicates how services are provided: clients are allowed to choose through a ‘shopping’ experience that retains dignity while avoiding the waste of giving out unwanted food and merchandise.

“Unity-ville” is the magical village where Santa Barbara County’s low-income find assistance. The parents become heroes in the eyes of their children as they enter the Pirate’s Cove; register at the Black Pearl Pirate Ship (complete with mast, rigging, ship’s wheel & cannons!); and shop in the Stone Fire House (soup department); Bank of Unity-ville (canned vegetables); Old West General Store (bean department); Lil Ol’ School House (canned meat); and Old World Market (vegetables and frozen meat).

If you’d like to take the tour, RSVP to Dave Stone [email protected] for this July 11 event.

Gimmick Rally and Catered BBQ Lunch Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009

This rally is a test of smarts and deductive abilities, not speed or driving techniques. You and your navigator will be given a list of clues or questions to answer as you drive the route and observe the many sights and signs along the drive. This year’s route begins in Agoura Hills and heads south up and over the hills of Malibu, then along the coastline via Hwy 1 to our final destination, Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura. The Arroyo Verde Park is very large and well shaded and it’s where we will be treated to a delicious lunch of barbecued tri-tip and chicken with all the fixings! We’ll be using the same catering folks who cooked for the Lake Casitas Poker Run & BBQ in 2008.

For even more enjoyment, there will be a podium celebration with prizes for the top three players. Prizes are being provided graciously by Performance Products/Automotion.com, a long time supporter and advertiser in “Der Auspuff.” Performance Products/Automotion.com is an excellent source for OEM and aftermarket performance parts and accessories for Porsche vehicles. For quick and clear answers to your Porsche parts needs call (888) 763-0280 or www.automotion.com Join us for this fun-filled event of driving your favorite car through great scenery combined with good food and your fellow Porsche enthusiasts. We will all meet at 10:00 a.m. at the NW end of the Costco parking lot, located on Lindero Canyon Road just N. of the 101 Freeway. Driving directions will be distributed at that time along with the list of clues and questions. Please DO NOT forget to have a pen or pencil with you to write down your answers during the drive.

The cost for the rally, catered lunch, and SBR activity fee is $25 per person. Please make your check payable to PCA/SBR and mail it along with the attendee information below to Doreen Pankow no later than September 18. There is also a $2-per-hour parking fee that YOU must pay the attendant when exiting the park after lunch. If you have any questions, please call Ted or Doreen at (805) 527-8280 or email [email protected].
