It’s a roundtrip train ride from

Santa Barbara to San Luis Obispo

in a beautiful double-decker train car

from a bygone era - The Silver Splendor!

Enjoy fantastic views of some of California’s last original native coastal landscapes: the legendary surfing beaches of Hollister and Cojo-Jalama, Point Conception, the massive rocket launch sites at Vandenberg Air Force Base, historic Honda Point, marine, avian, terrestrial wildlife and much more. Portions of the rails run adjacent to the historic trails etched by Spanish explorers Gaspar de Portola and Juan Bautista de Anza on their epic jour-neys through Alta California.

Bring a picnic lunch and plan on a fun, relaxing day riding the rails on the superbly restored dome car - The Silver Splendor. Our privately owned, vintage railcar is a pleasurable remem-brance of American passenger trains from the ‘40s and ‘50s. The dome car is pulled by Amtrak on 1761 North and 1790 South. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Actual travel time is about five hours with a 10:00 a.m. check-in for tickets at the Santa Barbara station with return to Santa Barbara at 4:30-5:00 p.m. The stop in San Luis Obispo is approximately 50 minutes. When reboarding at the SLO Amtrak station, passengers will switch levels so all can enjoy different views.

The President’s Column

MIKE HODSON

Attitude has been a constant struggle my entire life, especial-ly before age 30. From the outside looking in, it seems ut-terly ridiculous that my attitude would be anything but un-

waveringly positive 24/7/365. Having spent my formative years in Southern California enjoying the relaxed culture, magnificent weather and a very strong and supportive family structure, it is difficult to imagine how my life could be dramatically improved.

My two biggest role models, Mom and Dad, were both very capable while very different in their ap-proaches to life and tackling the problems of ev-eryday existence. Dad was always the one to work harder to find a solution. Perfection was never the goal, but failure was inconceivable. Mom had a to-tally different perspective -- creativity was her way. She would find an alternate path which led to the same goal. Perfection was the goal which had been instilled in her from a very young age. Her family held her to extremely lofty goals, and she suffered accordingly her entire life.

Although I never felt family pressure to achieve perfection, I managed to regularly place that burden on myself. Frustrated by being unable to achieve that unrealistic goal, my attitude suf-fered. My temper got the best of me at times during academics, sports and hobbies.

Not being the sharpest knife in the drawer, it took many years to realize my fundamental problems: inappropriate expectations coupled with impatience and a lack of understanding of what truly matters in life, resulting in a poor attitude on my part.

Somewhat surprisingly, surviving an extremely difficult per-sonal relationship turned my world around. Emerging from the fog, my view of the world changed for the better. I began to ap-preciate what I had been missing, and what used to seem impor-tant became petty details. Learning to accept and embrace family and friends as they are was a big step in the right direction. Being satisfied with my career and personal life, along with taking a re-

alistic view of my limitations, helped to calm me in ways never expected.

Although the demons from the past occasion-ally rear their ugly heads, I try very hard to live in a productive frame of mind. My goal is to be friendly and considerate to everyone, and the correspond-ing ability to brighten someone’s day is wonderful. Making the simple effort to help pays off, and I be-lieve that positive energy is easy to share.

Certainly the world has enough sadness and woe already, especially if one listens to the popular

media, which thrives on suffering and pain. Try the high road. It feels good, it makes others feel good, and you won’t regret it.

Everywhere I go, everything I observe and everyone that I meet makes me deeply grateful for the wonderful life I lead. My problems, concerns and worries are silly compared to the vast majority of the human race. The positives vastly outweigh the negatives; therefore, I need to get my head screwed on straight, appreciate the benefits and act accordingly.

Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth catching?

As a Porsche enthusiast, Carl is extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the brand. Plus, as a member of the Santa Barbara Region, Carl always brings a Porsche (or two) of interest to the Camarillo Breakfast.

13SEPTEMBER 2O17 DERAUSPUFF

As these pages come to a close, the timing seems oddly prescient against the backdrop of a shifting automotive landscape. Porsche it-

self is healthier than ever with ever-rising sales (especially in expansive markets such as China and the Middle East) and is the world’s most profitable automaker. But as a prestige maker of sports and luxury au-tomobiles, such continued success is any-thing but guaranteed.

This is being written just days after Porsche’s sudden withdrawal from top-lev-el endurance racing (not long after secur-ing its 18th overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans) to focus on the burgeoning Formula E championship for all-electric race cars. Perhaps more significantly, both France and the United Kingdom have re-cently announced plans for a complete ban of the sale of gasoline and diesel-engined vehicles by 2040. Several other European nations are expected to follow suit, and a number of major city centers are only ac-cessible by low or zero-emissions vehicles.

Of course, gasoline remains relatively plentiful and inexpensive and will continue to be the predominant form of automotive propulsion for decades to come. None-theless, the march towards electrification of the automotive fleet of the developed world is certain to accelerate as a result of these decrees. In fact, even before the French and UK announcements, Swedish automaker Volvo (owned by Chinese con-glomerate Geely) unveiled its own ambi-tious plans to solely offer hybrid-electric and all-electric vehicles by 2019.

Speaking of China, it surpassed the Unit-ed States as the world’s largest automotive market back in 2009, and the gap keeps widening. However, China has had to come to terms with its horrific record of envi-ronmental protection and has been forced to take action in an attempt to clean up its smog-choked cities. As such, the Chinese government has ordered strict new tail-pipe emissions regulations that will meet existing “Euro 6” standards. These mea-sures will come into effect next year and will be fully implemented by 2020.

Even in the absence of outright bans on IC-engined vehicles, existing IC engines have become quite complex to meet cur-rent and future fuel economy and CO2/

and the

exhaust emissions standards. Direct fuel injection and turbocharging are now main-stream technologies, as are eight, nine, and even ten-speed automatic transmissions, all of which add cost to a new vehicle. Fur-thermore, even gasoline direct-injected engines sold in the Euro zone will soon re-quire particulate traps to be installed in the exhaust system to reduce soot/particulate emissions, which are cited as the main threat to public health in both the French and UK phase-out of IC engines.

At a certain point, all-electric vehicles become the simpler, more elegant solution, despite concerns about battery range and charging infrastructure. Renewable energy from solar and wind power is rapidly pro-liferating and becoming less expensive by the day. While it is true that almost 40% of the world’s energy comes from “dirty” sources like coal-fired power plants, these are either being phased out or being forced to become “cleaner.”

Besides environmental considerations, consumer preferences are also rapidly altering the concept of personal trans-portation. While the lack of automotive enthusiasm of the “millennial” generation has probably been overstated, younger consumers are not likely to purchase new vehicles at the same rate as their parents’ generation. In addition to the costs of pur-chasing, fueling, insuring, and parking a private vehicle, the advent of mobile ride-hailing services such as Lyft and Uber and car-sharing services like ZipCar have made the notion of car ownership among urban citizens somewhat superfluous. After all, most private vehicles spend over 90% of their existence in a parking space!

And, much to the horror of “petrolheads” everywhere, the autonomous car is com-ing! While there are numerous technical and legal issues to be sorted, automakers are currently engaged in an arms race to introduce more and more self-driving fea-

tures. Though Porsche seems to be letting sister company Audi take the lead in au-tonomous vehicle technology, the current 971 Panamera is available with an option-al “InnoDrive” driver assistance system, which combines onboard sensors and a powerful GPS system to control accelera-tion and braking as efficiently as possible. The driver merely needs to steer the ve-hicle.

As sophisticated as Porsche’s InnoDrive system is, it is only considered Level 2 (out of five defined levels) autonomous technology according to the U.S. Dept. of Transportation/Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) rating system. The “fully” autonomous vehicles being widely tested by Google have Level 4 technology. With automotive fatalities on the rise after de-cades of decline, distracted driving is a se-rious issue, and autonomous technology may prove to be an answer.

Of course, carmakers need to sell new cars every year, and the prevailing trends are a threat to their very existence. Auto sales in the US and worldwide have been quite healthy during the past several years; but in many instances, this has been buoyed by generous incentives and ultra-low lease rates. Given the razor-thin profit margins of the automotive industry as a whole, this is not a sustainable business model. There will likely be consolidation, bankruptcies, and other shake-ups in the years to come. Those who remain are likely to form alliances with tech giants such as Google and Apple rather than attempt to develop autonomous driving and connec-tivity technology completely in-house.

So, where does all of this leave Porsche? Despite being a poster child for unadulter-ated, cacophonous IC engine fun, Porsche has its sights set firmly on the future. Porsche has hedged its position by invest-ing over one billion euros into an all-new factory to manufacture the production version of its all-electric Mission E sedan, which is slated to go on sale by 2020. (See my feature article on the prototype Mis-sion E in the April 2016 issue of Excellence magazine for more info.) This electric four-door promises to challenge Tesla while of-fering an industry-first, 800-volt charging infrastructure to allow rapid recharging of the onboard battery pack. According to Porsche, an 80% charge could be achieved in 15 minutes.

Porsche’s new 800V Turbo Charging Station in Berlin

While Porsche was initially mum on the subject of creating and maintaining an in-frastructure of 800V “Turbo Charging” sta-tions, the automaker has recently unveiled its first such apparatus outside of the fac-tory at a branch office in Berlin. The facil-ity features two standard charging stations suitable for Porsche’s current crop of “E-Hybrid” plug-in vehicles along with two of the new 800V rigs, complete with liquid-cooled charging cables! An 82-foot-tall py-lon covered with solar panels (pictured be-low & on pages 12 & 13) provides power for the charging station. A second such charg-

ing facility is currently under construction at PCNA headquarters in Atlanta.

While it remains to be seen if and how rapidly Porsche can deploy such a net-work of charging stations across Europe and North America, help is coming from an interesting source. As part of the legal settlement resulting from the infamous “Dieselgate” scandal, the VW/Audi Group has agreed to invest $2 billion over the next decade into “clean energy” development. This means that VAG is likely to foot the bill for the 800V charging infrastructure, and future VW/Audi electric vehicles will likely be adapted to use the 800V system as well.

In the meantime, Porsche has recently filed a patent for variable-length con-necting rod technology, which will enable

changeable compression ratios in its future gasoline engines to further improve flex-ibility and fuel economy. Extended-range, plug-in hybrids will further proliferate Porsche’s lineup and will enable drivers to access city centers in the aforementioned European cities while in EV mode.

Even if consumer demand for Porsche sports cars and four-doors wanes, Porsche is in the unique position of being a revered engineering company, so it should be able to continue its longtime role of consulting for other firms.

Finally, what does this portend for you, the Porsche enthusiast holding this maga-zine? Times are certainly changing, but the market for vintage Porsches and oth-er classics is stronger than ever. You will be able to enjoy that 356, 911, 914 or 986 Boxster for years to come (at least in the United States). And while some may la-ment the recent unavailability of the clas-sic, normally-aspirated flat-six in Porsche’s mainstream models or the relative lack of manual transmissions, there are thousands of used examples out there with both op-tions!

In closing, I would like to offer my heart-felt thanks to all PCA-SBR members and others who offered such great support and encouragement over the years! I will con-tinue to be available in person at the shop and PCA events and via email at [email protected] if you have any technical questions. =

STORY BY MIKE HODSONEVENT PHOTOS BY DON DICKEY & TED LIGHTHIZER

SEPTEMBER 2O1718 DERAUSPUFF

They say that the best class-es are taught by the best teachers. Dissecting tech-nical information into eas-

ily understandable bits, combined with an engaging and humorous style, made Scott Mann, Chief Driving Instructor for PCA Zone 8, everyone’s favorite taskmas-ter at the inaugural Adult Driving School.

Scott has been a professional driving coach for many years as well as a consultant to many auto manufacturers. Extremely prag-matic, Scott tells it like it is with-out the dubious benefit of filters to dilute his message. His frank-ness in the classroom environ-ment, and in a car one-on-one, is refreshing, entertaining and very informative.

Thirty-two students gathered at the Camarillo Airport for a fun day of classroom theory followed by driving exercises designed to put the various theories into real-world action.

First up was emergency brak-ing practice, the objective being to feel the limits of the car during a panic stop. Students were en-couraged to progressively explore the braking capability of their cars by increasing entry speeds and the level of brake application aggres-sion. Understandably, several par-ticipants were reluctant to subject their vehicles to the perceived “harsh” level requested. Quickly, everyone realized that no vehicle “abuse” was going to occur.

Next up was the emergency lane change maneuver involv-ing swerving the car either left or right into an adjacent “lane,” then coming to a full stop. Again, slowly increasing speed allowed all to be-gin to discover what their vehicles were capable of doing.

Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive allowed each participant to experience understeer, oversteer and to plain have fun, all within the very safe

environment of the unused run-way pavement.

Navigating the slalom course, then executing a last-second simulated accident avoidance maneuver, proved to be a chal-lenge, especially when the slalom course was lengthened and the speeds increased. Drivers learned the importance of smoothness in their car control inputs, including acceleration, braking and steer-ing. All those observing were very pleased to see the progress of the students as they noticeably im-proved their skills, sporting big smiles to verify their enjoyment.

To cap off the day, a figure-eight course was made more “interest-ing” with the addition of water on the driving surface. The cars got dirty, the drivers felt the front and back of their machines slide, and everyone stretched their comfort zones.

It was a wonderful day of learn-ing for all involved, including the organizers. As this was the first time that PCA/SBR held an Adult Driving School, we sailed into some new waters. Huge thanks go out to our students for their patience. We know that some of the wait times were long. Thanks also to our volunteers, including Doreen Pankow, Ted Lighthizer, Kenny and Tara Brundrett, Gary Olmstead, Desmond Warren, Tom Marshall, Joe Niederst, Glenn Crawford and Don Dickey. Of course, much appreciation is ex-tended to Scott Mann, who drove his V-8 powered Boxster S (!) all the way from Las Vegas to make the event possible.

Our objective was not to trans-form the driving skills of our stu-dents in one day. That goal is un-realistic. We did, however, wish to transform the way our students THINK about their driving. Hope-fully, we succeeded. Thanks again to everyone for participating and helping. =
