Summer is nearing an end, but there are still lots of great car events in

September you can enjoy. In last month’s President’s Column, I talked about the upcoming Pre-Concours Detail Clinic on September 13th at Lavaggio, a premiere detail facility in Agoura Hills and our sponsor for this event. You will learn how to better prepare your car for competition

(or fun) in less time and hear about some new detailing techniques. So sign up for this clinic and learn how to prepare your Porsche for our Concours d’Elegance in October.

Our 18th annual Chili Cook-Off on September 27th will be held at Jim & Terry Middlebrook’s beautiful home with its spectacular view. You’ll be spending a leisurely afternoon on their patio enjoying delicious food and great camaraderie. Bring your favorite chili and compete for the coveted Lady Scoville Perpetual Trophy. If chili cooking isn’t your thing, bring an appetizer, salad or dessert.

The Coronado Speed Festival on September 20th and 21st is being held during Fleet Week in San Diego to honor and celebrate the men and women of the military. Car racing is scheduled both days, and the PCA San Diego Region is also hosting a Hospitality Tent. Corral parking will be from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Our 38th Annual Concours d’Elegance on October 12th will be held on the beautiful grounds of the Four Seasons Hotel in

the PResIDent’s CoLumnDoReen PAnkow

Westlake Village. It’s our first year at this venue, and we expect to have high participation since the location is so prestigious. And because it’s closer for other regions’ members to attend, we expect to see more Zone 8 participants this year.

“Concours d’ Elegance” is a French term denoting a gathering together of automobiles in competition for judging of their respective merits in terms of coachwork design, finish and appointments. In the PCA, we are concerned with only one type of car, the Porsche, and many of our members use their cars in many different ways and for many specific purposes. Therefore, the purpose of this Zone 8 Concours Series is to select the best prepared and maintained Porsche.

There are six divisions in the judged competition ranging from Full Concours to Wash & Shine. You are competing with cars in similar classifications within the various divisions. Full Concours is the toughest division as all aspects of the car are judged for preparation and maintenance, including the chassis and wheels. Street, Unrestored, Ubergang, and Special Divisions have the exterior and interior judged as well as the storage and engine compartments. The purpose of the Wash & Shine Division is to get new participants acquainted with the Concours rules and learn how the judging process works. These cars are only judged on exterior and interior preparation and maintenance, so the judges don’t inspect your storage and engine compartments.

If you don‘t want to enter the judged competition, you can still enter your Porsche in the Display Only category. The display cars will be parked in a prominent position in front of the hotel. Don’t miss this opportunity to display your favorite Porsche(s).

SBR's 50th anniversary

The occasion of a 50th anniversary calls for a celebration, and on Saturday, July 19, 2014, the Santa Barbara Region of the Porsche Club of America celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding with an event more than

worthy of the occasion. Over 290 members, friends, and honored guests gathered in the rotunda of the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort on Cabrillo Boulevard in beautiful Santa Barbara. If you’re wondering, yes, 290+ made the event the largest in our region’s history, perhaps in any region’s history.

The day began at the beautiful Porsche showroom of Santa Barbara Auto Group. One hundred thirty-eight Porsches driven by our members lined the driveway and service area in prepara-tion for an anniversary romp through the San Marcos Pass, the Santa Ynez Valley and more before returning to Santa Barbara and the Fess Parker Resort for a luncheon buffet.

And what a buffet it was. Everyone agreed the food was both excellent and plentiful and that the service was top-notch.

SBR President Doreen Pankow welcomed everyone and intro-duced the first of our honored guests, California State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson of District 19. Ms. Jackson recounted a

quick story of driving through the California hills with former California State Senator (23rd District) Sheila Kuehl in Senator Kuehl’s 356 Cabriolet, which she still owns. Although Senator Jackson is not a Porsche owner, she does appreciate the marque and has fond memories of enjoying the role of passenger. Senator Jackson presented our region with a certificate of recognition from the California State Senate.

Next came the Mayor of Santa Barbara, the Honorable Helene Schneider. Mayor Schneider presented SBR with a proclama-tion recognizing our charitable acts through the years, and she thanked us for supporting so many local causes in and around the City of Santa Barbara.

We were very honored to have our region’s co-founder and very first president in attendance. Cam Warren traveled from his home in Reno, NV, to be with us on our special occasion. He recounted a few ancedotes about his years in SBR and was pre-sented with a new SBR grille badge by President Doreen Pankow and 50th Anniversary Chairman Nicolas Liakas.

The Porsche Club of America’s representative at our anniversa-ry celebration was National Treasurer Tom Gorsuch. Tom spoke

of his early involvement with PCA and how he was encouraged to do more by our own Past President Carolyn Ewbank. Through Carolyn’s involvement, Tom increased his participation in the club, eventually rising to the position he holds today. He congrat-ulated us on being “one of the most, if not the most, active regions in the country.” He also thanked Nicolas Liakas, with whom Tom rode on the morning’s drive. Tom presented our region with a congratulatory document from PCA to honor our 50th anniver-sary.

Zone 8 Representative Tom Brown spoke briefly, thanking SBR for all we do, and added his kudos on our region’s special occa-sion.

The Unity Shoppe’s Executive Director Tom Reed honored us with a proclamation from the County of Santa Barbara, and he collectively thanked all the members of SBR for once again choosing The Unity Shoppe as the region’s charity for 2014.

Past President David Stone then made a special presentation to long-time SBR member and Der Auspuff advertiser Gary Betz. Gary is celebrating 60 years as a Porsche Master Mechanic (see page 19), and we wanted to honor his years of distinguished

service and loyalty to our club. He was given a special plaque of thanks for his support.

To say that this year, 2014, has been a big one for the Santa Barbara Region would be an understatement. Not only is it the 50th anniversary of our founding, but it marks the second time SBR has been named Region of the Year by the Porsche Club of America. Past President Nicolas Liakas, in speaking of our region’s many achievements over the years, noted that both times our region was so honored a female had been our president. Our first such recognition came in 2001 when Carolyn Ewbank was our leader. Then, this year, we won the award with Doreen Pankow as president.

Nick, who served as SBR president twice, asked Valerie Weinstein to join him at the podium. Nick posed the question to Valerie, “Since both times we’ve won Region of the Year a woman has been our president, don’t you think it’s about time for the men of this club to stand up and break the glass ceiling?” Valerie calmly turned to Nick and without missing a beat sang, “Anything men can do, we can do better. We can do anything better than men!” This unexpected musical offering from “Annie

Continued on page 14

Page 16: SEP Der Auspuff

SEPTEMBER 201414 AUSPUFFDER

Get Your Gun” delighted the crowd and would have made Irving Berlin proud. Nick’s eventual retort (once the crowd settled down) of “No, you can’t!” was an-swered by the expected, “Yes, we can!” from Valerie. A few repeats followed, and the point had been musically made. The crowd was delighted.

Next up was the “membership stand-down.” All SBR members were asked to stand. Then, those who had been members for less than one year were invited to take their seats, followed by those with less than five years of membership, and so on in five-year intervals. The stand-down continued until only Anita Banke was standing. Anita joined our region in August 1967, making her the member with the longest tenure.

Also recognized for more than 50 years of PCA membership were Joe & Kathy Schneider of Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara. Joe & Kathy joined the Los Angeles Region in 1964, transferring to Santa Barbara Region in 1971.

Then, the time came to draw for the three grand prizes in our 50th Anniver-sary Raffle. Enlisting the assistance of Tom Brown, Tom Reed, and Tom Gor-such, the winning tickets were impartially selected. Even though the majority of the raffle tickets had been sold to members of our region, that did not prevent all three prizes from being won by PCA members from outside our region.

The third place prize of a new set of tires for any Porsche was won by Maryann Kolb of the Arizona Region. The second prize of a trip for two to the Porsche Sport Driving School in Alabama went to Maggie Garnett of the Los Angeles Region. And the first prize of a complete Fastlane Travel Treffen package for two to Germany went to Sinisa Trifunovic of the Grand Prix Region.

Past President Burt Misevic’s original watercolor “Saturday Morning on Stea-rns Wharf ” was silent-auctioned for a winning bid of $1000. The winning bid-der, Bill Wilson, immediately and very generously donated the original painting back to the club for re-auction at a later time and accepted a numbered, signed print in its place. Those limited edition prints were selling quite well, as was the SBR 50th Anniversary poster.

The day was a smashing success. The morning’s drive was spectacular, as the great photos attest. The weather was mild and sunny, giving way to a slight but welcome (and cooling) overcast at lunchtime. As the day came to an end, the largest gathering in our region’s history lingered, relishing both the occasion and the friendship that being a member of our region entails. It was a great day, thanks in no small part to our President Doreen Pankow and the Chairman of our 50th Anniversary Committee, Nicolas Liakas, both of whom worked tire-lessly to make our special day such a huge success. Our thanks to both Nick and Doreen, and here’s to the next 50 years of SBR achievement. =

This has certainly been a year of milestones. For Porsche AG, 2014 has been a celebration of 50 years of the 911 and the un-

veiling of new models Macan, 911 Targa and Panamera E. For the Porsche Club of America, it’s been unprecedented growth, prosperity and a record attendance at the 59th Porsche Parade in Monterey. And for our Santa Barbara Region, it was a re-cord-turnout celebration of 50 years as an award-winning region.

There’s a friend of our region who is also celebrating a personal milestone that we would like to recognize. He has been a Der Auspuff advertiser for the past 34 years, and this year celebrates 60 years as a Porsche Master Mechanic. I’d like to share his story with you.

He was born in Heidelberg, Germany in 1940. His father was killed in WWII the following year, and he was raised by his grandparents. He attended Catholic schools, which he claims kept him too busy to get into trouble; and by the age of 12, he had developed an interest in any-thing mechanical.

At the young age of 14, he entered a 3 1/2 year apprenticeship training program at Ludwig Sebastian’s Volkswagen/Porsche dealership in Weinheim, Germany. The training was rigorous for the 30 interns and included three weeks of intensive study at the Porsche factory in Stuttgart. He completed his training in the top third of his class and was awarded the coveted “German Mechanic Certification.”

He worked at Sebastian’s for an addi-tional year, which led to sponsorship and employment with Porsche/Volkswagen in Toronto, Canada. He would work there for the next 7 years.

Wishing to immigrate to the United States, he relocated to Columbus, Ohio, where he found a position at Davidson-Green Porsche. The dealership was small but very busy, and he spent the next 18

months in a windowless garage repairing engines and transmissions.

The harsh winters of Columbus and, undoubtedly, the work environment there, encouraged him to seek employment else-where. In the 1960’s Porsche and Volkswa-gen mechanics were in high demand, and he soon had job offers in Denver, Phoenix, Santa Monica and San Francisco.

In 1967, while on his way to the Bay area, he stopped by Masterson Motors in Ventura to see an old friend who worked there. He was introduced to owner John Masterson, who was looking for a good mechanic, and he was hired on the spot. I recently spoke with Mr. Masterson, who remembered this gentleman as a talented mechanic who had just the right accent for the job.

In 1969, while working at Masterson Motors, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1970, he left Masterson to accept a promotion as Service Manager with what was then Lavia Porsche/Audi in Santa Barbara. By 1974, he had become good

friends with the Porsche representative, who gave him a tip that the dealership was in trouble and would soon lose its franchise. A phone call to John Master-son brought him back to Ventura as the Porsche Service Manager soon thereafter.

In April 1977, our honoree decided that he would strike out on his own as an inde-pendent mechanic, and he opened a shop in Saticoy. The one-acre property had a garage with four lifts and an additional service bay and, at one point, supported the work of seven mechanics. In addi-tion to providing service and repairs for customers’ cars, he served the agricultural community by regularly rebuilding Volk-swagen industrial engines that powered hydraulic pumps to lift the 700 lb. crates for transporting lemons, avocados and other produce. To this day, he is the only local mechanic the farmers trust to do this work.

In January 2003, health issues forced him to scale back his operation, and he ul-timately sold the property. But in March of that year, he moved to a one-lift garage in an industrial park not far from his orig-

inal business, where he has continued to provide quality service and repairs for his loyal clientele these past 11 years.

Our friend has owned 14 Porsches over the years, including a 1955 Speedster that he sold and bought back several times; a 1972 911T; a 1974 911 Targa and a 1962 356 Carrera 2 sunroof coupe that was fully restored by its new owner in San Di-ego. And we all know he’s wishing he still owned those cars today.

As a way of giving back to the commu-nity, this gentleman has been a member of

the East Ventura Moose Lodge since 2000 and served as its Governor in 2006. His lodge routinely holds fundraisers to ben-efit orphaned children.

He lists his hobbies as enjoying good food and wine, European travel and an oc-casional round of golf when time permits.

Looking back on his 60-year career, he can honestly say that he has never been unemployed and has enjoyed each and every day he has worked as a mechanic. When asked about retirement, he says, “Maybe next year.”

He lives in Ventura with his lovely wife, Kathleen. He has an adult daughter, Heidi,

who is a regional sales representative for the automotive parts industry.

Celebrating 60 years of dedicated ser-vice to the Porsche community, we are pleased to honor Master Mechanic, Mr. Gary Betz, on his milestone achievement.

Gary was presented with a plaque at our 50th Anniversary celebration on July 19, 2014 recognizing his outstanding service and our appreciation for his many years as a Der Auspuff advertiser. Kathleen, Heidi and her fiancé, John, were proud to be there and see him accept the award. =

Shown receiving an award of special recognition is Gary Betz (holding the plaque) and his wife, Kathleen. On the left are Gary’s daughter, Heidi, and her fiancé, John.

An old newspaper clipping and Gary’s original “papers” from Germany are among his memorabilia.

A common feature of modern gas stations is the placement of prominent warning signs ad-monishing consumers to avoid

“topping off ” their fuel tank after the fuel nozzle shuts off. This is sage advice, as re-peatedly topping off the fuel tank of any modern (or older) automobile can damage expensive emission control equipment. Unburnt fuel vapors (also known as hy-drocarbons or HCs) are a smog-forming agent, and represent up to 20% of potential vehicle emissions. Since the early 1970s, all automobiles sold in the U.S. have been required to employ some form of fuel va-por recovery system. This month’s column will explore the less-than-glamorous, yet important, role of fuel vapor recovery sys-tems in Porsche cars.

Gasoline is volatile by nature and evapo-rates very easily when exposed to air. This is normal, as the fuel that is introduced into an engine combusts when in vapor form. The liquid gasoline that is stored in the fuel tank readily vaporizes at room temperature, and even more so with in-creases in ambient temperature. Because of this, the fuel tank of any gasoline-pow-ered vehicle needs to be vented. Further-more, if no vent were present, the suction of the fuel pump would create a large vac-uum inside the fuel tank and restrict fuel flow to the engine, and could potentially cause the fuel tank to implode!

The earliest Porsches simply vented these fuel vapors to the atmosphere, which creates significant HC emissions. The first mandated fuel vapor recovery systems vent gas vapors to a storage canister that is filled with activated charcoal pellets. These pellets are porous and have a large surface area, and are able to absorb twice their weight in fuel vapors. The charcoal canister stores any excess fuel vapors while the engine is not running. The outlet of the charcoal canister is connected to the en-gine’s air filter housing. As soon as the en-gine is started, these vapors are drawn in by engine vacuum and combusted in the engine. A hose connected to the fan hous-

ing of air-cooled Porsche models helps to push air through the charcoal canister.

The early EVAP systems were not pre-cise, and it was difficult for Porsche engi-neers to regulate the air-fuel mixture to compensate for the excess fuel vapors as they were ingested by the early carbureted and mechanically fuel-injected engines.

By the 1980s, electronic fuel injection controls enabled more precise regulation of EVAP vapors. An electronic purge so-lenoid valve in the engine compartment opens when signaled by the engine control unit (DME) and purges fuel vapors from the charcoal canister at specified intervals. This usually occurs above idle, but only during low RPM/light engine load situa-tions. During these conditions, excess fuel vapors are easily compensated for by ad-justing the fuel injector open time while the canister purge valve is open.

The electronically controlled EVAP sys-tems of the 1980s and early 1990s func-tion well, but heat and age can affect the integrity of the long vapor hoses that run

from one end of the car to the other. In states like California that require periodic smog tests, smog technicians are required to physically test the EVAP systems of cars from this era to ensure system sealing and functionality. As exact system design and component location varies between different manufacturers (it is rare for a smog tech to know the location of a 1980s Porsche charcoal canister!), it became ob-vious to regulators and engineers that a self-monitoring EVAP system would be critical to keep HC emissions in check in the future.

This came in the form of the On-Board Diagnostic-II emission control monitor-ing system that was mandated for all 1996 and later U.S.-market automobiles. (See the June 2013 issue of Der Auspuff for more info on OBD-II and emission con-

trol systems.) In addition to monitoring major emission control components such as the catalytic converter(s) and oxygen sensors, OBDII-equipped vehicles also feature an EVAP system monitor that peri-odically tests system function and ensures that it is leak-free.

Porsche’s early OBD-II EVAP monitor (1996 and later 993 and all 986/996) only runs the system functionality test when the engine is running at operating temper-ature and if it is determined that sufficient fuel vapors are stored in the charcoal can-ister. The test runs at idle and uses a fuel tank pressure sensor, the oxygen sensors, and the idle control circuit to determine if fuel vapors are indeed being admitted to the engine’s intake when the canister purge valve is opened. If a system fault is detected, a fault code is stored in the DME control unit; if the same fault occurs dur-ing two consecutive driving cycles, the “check engine” light is illuminated.

The EVAP system of the 1996-2004 Porsche sports cars is also periodically self-tested for leaks. An electronic cut-off

is activated to seal the system, and engine vacuum is applied. The fuel tank pressure sensor monitors the vacuum level; if the vacuum in the tank holds for a specified interval, the system is determined to be leak-free. If the vacuum bleeds off before the allotted time, the rate of bleed-off de-termines if a “small” or “large” EVAP sys-tem leak fault code is stored. Again, the CEL illuminates if leaks are detected dur-ing two consecutive driving cycles.

Because the fuel filler cap is a major sealing component of the EVAP system, a loose or missing gas cap is sure to cause a “check engine” light on a 1996 and later car if it is not noticed before the system runs the next diagnostic leak test. If the gas cap is left loose, the CEL may not illuminate immediately, as the proper conditions for the EVAP leakage monitor to run will only

Chris Andropoulos is the Service Manager and a technician at Schneider Autohaus in Santa Barbara (a Der Auspuff advertiser). Chris is a lifelong Porsche “nut” and is fascinated with and knowledgeable about all Porsches, from 356s to the latest GT3s. When he’s not racing his daily-driven 944 Turbo at PCA and POC track events, he can be found enjoying the beaches, ocean, and mountains of beautiful Santa Barbara.

be met occasionally. If the CEL is illumi-nated and the cause is determined to be a large EVAP leak due to a loose gas cap, the fault code(s) should be erased by a scan tool after the cap is tightened. Other-wise, the CEL will eventually turn off, but only after two successive successful EVAP leak monitors have run (which can take a while), and even then the fault code will still be stored.

If the original fuel filler cap is lost, only a Genuine Porsche replacement cap should be fitted, as many universal aftermarket caps will not seal properly and CEL prob-lems will continue.

A loose or missing gas cap is by far the most common cause of EVAP system fault codes and CELs. Other leaks can be caused by physical damage to EVAP hoses and components due to an accident or breakage during installation/removal of fuel system components. Rodent damage can be another cause. If obvious physical damage to visible components cannot be found and the gas cap is determined to have a proper seal, a qualified repair shop will use a special smoke testing machine to fill the EVAP system and determine the source of the leak. This is helpful as many fuel vapor lines are hidden behind fender well liners and underbody panels.

The 2000-2004 986 and 996 models use an overly-complicated system that recov-

ers fuel vapors that are generated during refueling. This system uses the charcoal canister to filter the extra air that is flushed out of the fuel tank when displaced by in-coming liquid fuel. The electric switches and shutoff valves of this system can fail, and the symptoms range from difficulty of refueling (the fuel nozzle shuts off before the tank is full) to a low whistling noise from the fuel filler neck while driving.

The 2005 and later 987/997 and all Cay-enne/Panamera models use a simplified form of the fuel filling vapor recovery system that is largely trouble free. These systems also use dedicated electronic or vacuum diagnostic pumps to check the

EVAP system for leakage instead of relying solely on engine vacuum.

There are some model-specific EVAP issues. It is relatively common for the en-gine compartment-mounted purge valve of early Cayenne models to fail, which will cause a CEL, but generally does not cause a drivability complaint. The 2008 and newer DFI Cayenne models use an engine-driven vacuum pump to generate sufficient vacu-um to operate the brake booster and the leak detection pump for the EVAP system. If the vacuum pump leaks engine oil in-ternally, oil may be ingested by the EVAP system and the vacuum-actuated vari-able intake manifold flap adjuster, causing damage to each and a CEL.

No matter what type of EVAP system is installed in your car, it can be dam-aged from “topping off,” or continuing to fill the system after the gas station filling nozzle automatically shuts off. The extra gallon or so of fuel that is squeezed out is not worth it! The extra fuel will overflow into the EVAP system and saturate the charcoal canister. This may cause small pieces of charcoal to break off and disperse throughout the EVAP system, which can block vapor lines and/or damage system components like the purge valve or shutoff valve.

It can be difficult and costly for a repair facility to diagnose and repair the extent of EVAP system damage due to chronic over-filling. The Cayenne/Panamera and 987/997 systems use a leak detection module that is integrated with the char-coal canister; the entire unit often needs replacement if damaged from liquid fuel. If an EVAP system repair is made, a fac-tory-level scan tool is required to perform an EVAP functionality test to verify the repair.

The newest 981/991 models use yet an-other EVAP system design that only checks for leaks when the engine is switched off and the vehicle is stationary for a period of time. This system monitors the gradual increase of vacuum in the fuel tank as it cools, and unlike previous systems, it can-not be tested using a scan tool. =

Shown is a four-chamber charcoal canister from a 997 Carrera. The top has been cut off and one of the filters has been removed to expose the charcoal pellets that ab-sorb gasoline vapors. The electronic leak detection module is attached on the right.

the R.u.F. RePoRt

A fortuitous event occurred for members of SBR’s “Retired & Un-employed Folks” (R.U.F.) when

the Autry National Center opened an ex-hibit entitled “Route 66: The Road and Romance.” It was fortunate because many of the 13 people who went on the R.U.F tour of this exhibit on July 17th will also be participating in our region’s five-day “Get Your Kicks on Route 66” tour over the La-bor Day weekend.

This exhibit was very much enjoyed by all in our group and offered a tantalizing look into the history and lore of Route 66. Our docent, Paul Cole, was very knowl-edgeable and had the ability to share his knowledge in an entertaining and engag-ing manner.

We learned that Route 66 was estab-lished in 1926 and earned the moniker of the “Mother Road Of America.” It tra-versed eight states between Chicago and Los Angeles and was 2400 miles in length. Because it was a road comprised of nu-merous small linked roads throughout the American Midwest and West, it was also called the “Main Street of America.” The exhibit was presented in a serpentine pro-gression from the early days of the road starting in 1926 and continuing through its official demise in 1985.

In the early days of the automobile, the road provided a path for the huge western migration of people in the Dust Bowl era. Emblematic of this time are iconic works

of art such as Dorothea Lange’s poignant photo of the “Migrant Mother,” Alexander Hogue’s “Mother Earth Laid Bare,” and Maynard Dixon’s “No Place to Go,” which were displayed as evocative of the early pe-riod of the route.

Many other artifacts were on display: neon signs from motels, vintage gas pumps, Burma Shave signs, and a beauti-ful white 1960 Corvette. One unique piece of memorabilia was Jack Kerouac’s type-writer scroll (multiple feet long) of “On the Road,” written as he traveled Route 66.

The establishment of the Interstate Highway System in 1958 led to the even-tual demise of the old Route 66, which had traveled through many small towns of America, most of which were now by-passed. Understandably, this had a sig-nificant impact on the populations and economies of these once thriving towns.

As he closed his presentation, our do-cent reminded us that the modern focus of travel is now the destination, whereas in the earlier days of car travel, especially on Route 66, it was the trip itself (or the pro-cess) that was most important.

After our tour, we traveled to Foxy’s res-taurant in nearby Glendale for a delightful lunch on their outdoor patio. Several peo-ple mentioned their interest in making a return visit to the Autry to enjoy the other exhibits as well as a more leisurely exami-nation of the Route 66 presentation. =

The BloomBrothers

The centerpieces on each table at our 50th Anniversary luncheon were awarded to the lucky seat-holders whose chairs had a special sticker affixed.

Here, Activities Chair Barry Weinstein (left) and Mike Hodson show off their “bloomin’ luck,” as they both had been seated in the winning chairs.

A photo opportunity like this was simply too good to pass up.
