JUNE 20144 AUSPUFFDER

I am sure you’ve all heard that the Santa Barbara Region won the Ferry Porsche Trophy – PCA Region of the Year

award at the 2014 Parade. This beautiful trophy is pictured on the front cover. All the SBR members in attendance at the Concours Banquet rushed up to the podium when the announcement was made, and I had the honor of accepting the trophy on behalf of

all our members. I would like to thank our Board of Directors and all of you who organize and host events, serve as volunteers, and participate in events. It takes all of us to make our region so outstanding!

This is the first Porsche Parade that Ted and I have attended, and we had a great time participating in a variety of events and attending several of the banquets. There was a great turn-out from the Santa Barbara Region, and Monterey was flooded with over 2000 PCA members and their Porsches of all eras. We were able to get close to hundreds of Porsches at the concours d’elegance and enjoy the beauty and workmanship of these exquisitely prepared cars.

We also had a lot of SBR members participate in the competitive events, and many of them won awards at the Concours, Rally and Autocross, Art Show and other events. There are too many winners to list here, but congratulations to all of you who participated and won awards (see the SBR winners’ list on page 18). You will find the results posted for the art show, tech quiz, competitive events and all other awards presented at the Parade on the National PCA website at: http://parade2014.pca.org

The Ferry Porsche Trophy will be on display at our 50th

Anniversary celebration on July 19. This will be a fun-filled day starting out at Porsche Santa Barbara Auto Group for a light breakfast followed by a great drive through the Santa Ynez Valley and ending at the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. We’ll enjoy a buffet lunch in the rotunda overlooking the ocean prior to our celebration program.

We are very excited about the inaugural display of an original work of art painted by Past President Burt Misevic. His painting, which reflects our region’s glorious past, present and future, will be displayed publically for the first time at our 50th anniversary celebration. A limited number of copies of this artwork will be available for sale at this event along with 50th Anniversary posters designed by John Alfenito. So don’t forget to sign up for this memorable occasion.

I also wanted to make sure you knew that PCA is setting a new tradition solely focused on the cars of Porsche on Friday, August 15 during the Monterey Classic Car Week. The Porsche Club of America’s inaugural Werks Reunion will be staged at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Monterey, California.

In years past, PCA co-hosted Legends of the Autobahn at the Rancho Canada Golf Club with the BMW Car Club of America, Mercedes-Benz Club of America, and Audi Club of North America. For 2014, PCA, with participation from Porsche Cars North America, will break away from the other German marques to create a dedicated event to celebrate Porsche automobiles on the same fairways.

Werks Reunion is open to all and is tagged as “A Porsche Gathering” for a reason: PCA is inviting other Porsche clubs to join. It’s intended to be a way for all owners to mingle during Monterey Car Week. As a result, the Porsche Owners Club, Porsche Racing Club, 356 Registry, 356 Club, Early 911S Registry, R Gruppe, 914 World, and all Porsche clubs and registries are welcome. For more information, contact Tom Provasi, Event Chair, at [email protected].

If you’re not a fan of sad stories, you might want to

stop reading right here and just move on to other parts of the magazine. This is a tale of a first-time parade attendee (okay, me) and some very bad timing.

Each parade banquet features awards given to the specific

event the banquet honors. Additionally, as the festivities come to a close, door prizes are awarded via a random drawing from the names of all those attending the banquet. On Tuesday evening at the Concours Banquet, the proceedings were running a little long. Because my wife and I were not staying at the Hyatt

Regency, the site of that evening’s banquet, we had to park about a mile away at the local college and we were “bussed” back to the Hyatt. The understanding was - the shuttle busses would run back to the college lot until 10:00 p.m. only.

At 9:50 p.m., when the concours awards were still being announced, Pam and I opted to exit the festivities and catch the bus back to our car (many people were exiting early). At about 10:30 p.m., the final door prize was announced - a free trip to the Porsche Sport Driving School in Alabama! My name was drawn and annouced as the winner, but because I was not present to win, another name was selected and that person was the lucky winner of the PSDS trip.

To say I “took some grief ” over my early exit would be understating things a bit. Later in the week, I saw my friend Joe Schneider at Laguna Seca. I said, “Hi, Joe!” Without missing a beat, Joe replied, “Hi, Lucky.”

I’m sure this will all be funny to me...in about a year or two.

The joyous celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the Porsche Club of America’s Santa Barbara Region will take place on July 19, 2014. Our special events will commence at 9:00 a.m. at Porsche Santa Barbara where we will gather and enjoy a light breakfast. Our drive will continue through the Santa Ynez Valley, eventually returning to downtown Santa Barbara and the Fess Parker Doubletree Resort. We will display our Porsches and feast on a marvelous late lunch. We’ll be joined by state and local officials and, hopefully, by a couple of local celebrities. The drawing for the incredible raffle prizes will be conducted after the meal.

There will be a number of door prizes, but we are most excited about the inaugural display of an original work of art painted by our own Burt Misevic that will reflect the region’s glorious past, present, and future. In addition, a limited number of signed and numbered copies of the artwork will be avilable for purchase, as well as copies of the poster cre-ated by Der Auspuff Editor John Alfenito honoring the day of celebration.

An exciting and unique driving experience along America’s fabled Route 66 awaits us as we travel to Arizona for a five-day, four-night adventure into the past over the Labor Day weekend.

Touch the “Mother Road” that brought migrants from the Midwest and the East to California, the promised land. Visit the towns and villages that dotted the roadway on the longest stretch of the original highway still in existence. Explore the Grand Canyon Caverns and come up close to exotic animals at the Wild Animal Park & Sanctuary.

Tour the old western mining town of Oatman, Arizona, where the descendants of the burros that worked in the mines in the late 1800s freely roam the town greeting visitors with a friendly “hee-haw,” begging for carrots and other donkey treats.

Navigate a breath-taking drive on old Route 66 to the town of Oatman, then cool off that evening with a river boat dinner cruise on the Colorado River.

Test your luck or enjoy a show at the many riverside casinos, and share several meals with your fellow SBR members. 11JUNE 2014 AUSPUFFDER

Back in January, after much jubilation and many congratulations upon my being chosen as one of four winners in

the PCA Member Only Raffle, I was eager to get my 50th Anniversary Edition 991. Vu Nguyen of PCA National told me on the phone that I needed to have patience. He indicated that the process of choosing a car or cash, ordering the car, finalizing paperwork, building and delivering the car would take some time. Patience…he wasn’t kidding, but the journey thus far has been great.

Soon after that phone call with Vu, I drove a 911 50th at Rusnak Westlake Porsche with Rusnak General Manager Keith Goldberg at my side. It was soon evident I would not be building another car or taking the cash. I was sold on the anniversary 911. After the test drive, I sat down with Keith in his office and went through the build sheet, line by line. As we worked together, adding on all the options, we agreed that nothing was missed and I would not regret my choices. The car was “loaded”! I did have one final request, though...European delivery. There was no way I was going to miss the opportunity to pick up a brand new Porsche at the factory and drive it in Germany.

Fast forward to May. Having waited patiently for four months, “my” 911 would be ready for pickup in Stuttgart on May 14th. My sister and I made the trip to Frankfurt the day prior where my cousin picked us up for the drive to Stuttgart. After a night of nervous anticipation, Wednesday morning finally arrived. At 8:30 a.m., the three of us were happily greeted at the Porsche Delivery Center and were promptly taken to the showroom where various Porsches were to be picked up by their owners. In the middle of it all sat my 911. Wow!

“The Caliber ofService You Deserve”

13JUNE 2014 AUSPUFFDER

The Porsche consultant spent about an hour with me going over all the buttons, switches, menus, etc. He then told me it was time for the factory tour and asked me to drive the car out to the customer parking lot. In a daze, I carefully, slowly, gingerly made my way out of the showroom behind the wheel of my new Porsche. What a rush!

The factory tour lasted about an hour, showing how they produce 200 cars a day in Stuttgart. It was awe-inspiring to see a line of various Porsches (Carreras, Turbos, Boxsters, Cabriolets, Targas, left/right-hand drives) being built without a hiccup. Following the tour, we were treated to a wonderful lunch overlooking the new Porsche museum. I was then informed I would need to drive the car from the factory customer lot to the front doors of the museum for a photo op and special guided tour. The new museum is incredible, especially compared to its previous incarnation several years ago. Of the approximately 500 cars the museum has, they display only about 100 at any given time. They even had the father of my car on display, a 1965 911 in graphite gray.

After the incredible experience of receiving my car, touring the factory, eating a gourmet lunch, and viewing the museum, it was time to drive. My sister and I put 989 miles on the car driving to Berlin, Hannover, and back to Stuttgart the following Tuesday. We visited family and friends, saw many sights and, of course, drove fast on the autobahn. We even had time to take a 911 family portrait with some of my friends’ Porsches.

Driving a Porsche (especially brand new from the factory) on the autobahn is an experience I wish every PCA member could experience. As I dropped the car off, Porsche indicated that delivery time from Stuttgart to Rusnak Westlake Porsche (the receiving dealer) would take 6-10 weeks. Again, patience, but well worth the wait. =

PORSCHE PARADE 2O14SBR NAMED REGION OF THE YEAR

STORYBY JOHN ALFENITOPHOTOSBY PAM & JOHN ALFENITO

What if our region decided to run every single one of its yearly events in the space of one week? And what if we invited all the other regions to join us...at a beautiful resort? Well, in a simplified way, that’s

what a Porsche Parade is like.

Pam & I have been encouraged in the past to attend a parade, but this year was our first. With the national gathering just a quick (and beautiful) drive up the coast to Monterey, we couldn’t resist, and we’re both very glad we didn’t.

To say that a Porsche Parade offers “something for everyone” is not hyperbole. The available activities from which to choose number in the hundreds. From the usual suspects - autocross, concours, TSD rally, gimmick rally, and tech quizzes - to the more specialized offerings like wine tastings, cooking demos, beer sampling, an art show, and RC car events, parade has it all. Plus, there were tours to a number of scenic and educational locales, providing plenty of opportunity to drive our Porsches on wonderful roads in pursuit of new horizons.

By all accounts from the many SBR “parade veterans” who at-tended the Monterey affair, this year’s annual PCA event was the best yet and, as it turned out, the largest ever.

Pam & I attended three banquets. We toured with a large group to the Canepa Design Center in Scotts Valley. After our success in SBR’s recent gimmick rallies, we decided to give the parade’s version of same a try. Participating in the Parade of Porsches on Saturday found us as part of a record-breaking attempt to have the largest number of Porsches ever assembled for a photograph at the legendary Laguna Seca Racetrack. That daunting task was followed by two hot-laps of the track, which may have been my personal highlight of the entire week.

Getting back to the banquets...when you arrive at parade head-quarters, you sign in and receive your packet containing all your

tickets and information for the week to come. You also select your seating for any banquets you’ll be attending. Not knowing with whom we’d be seated for dinner turned out to be a pleas-ant parade surprise. At Tuesday night’s “Concours Banquet” the gentleman seated next to Pam had driven to parade all the way from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was also the newsletter editor of his region’s monthly publication. We had a fun evening swap-ping “editor stories,” and we’ve already connected via Facebook.

For Saturday evening’s “Victory Banquet,” we found ourselves at the same table with SBR’s founding president Cam Warren and his companion Sue Kemper, both of whom are now members of the Sierra Nevada Region. The SNR president was also at our table. It seemed that wherever we went during parade, we met new friends and easily struck up conversations about shared interests.

Thursday night we were invited to join several other members of the region at Carmel’s Baja Cantina, where it was “Cruisin’ Night,” featuring the local car community. While the invasion of Porsches overwhelmed the hot rods, the SBR troops had a rous-ing good time mingling with the locals and consuming Mexican-themed food and beverages.

There was plenty of time for shopping along the boulevard and side streets of Carmel-By-The Sea, too, not to mention sampling all the excellent restaurants the town had to offer. And there were always more Porsche activities going on, headquartered at Mon-terey’s Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Monday’s concours was simply amazing. Any display of cars in a town called Monterey would have to be legendary, and the PCA Parade Concours d’Elegance was that and more. Beautiful, pris-tine examples of Porsches from every era were everywhere you looked. I was particularly impressed by a 1952 Glockler-Porsche, one of only three ever made, perfect in every detail. There was so

much to see, I could barely focus my camera and take pictures fast enough. Several SBR members competed in the concours and scored quite well in a very competitive field.

Speaking of competing...our region came home from parade with a wealth of awards. At Tuesday evening’s “Concours Ban-quet,” SBR was named PCA Region of the Year and the Ferry Porsche Trohpy was presented to President Doreen Pankow, who accepted the honors as more than 25 of her fellow SBR members stood by her side. It was a stunning moment for all of us attending as the exploits and accomplishments of the winner were described prior to the region being identified. As the emcee listed the activites, charity work, weekend trips, and past accom-plishments, those of us from SBR were looking at one another, wondering if those familiar exploits were ours. Happily, it turned out that they were, and the announcement of Santa Barbara Region as Region of the Year was met by enthusiastic applause (at least by our members). It was a great moment.

But, the kudos didn’t end there. Later in the week, SBR took second place in the National Public Service awards. 2013’s Der Auspuff editor, Mike Pomerantz, was awarded first place in Class IV of the National Newsletter competition. And throughout the week, other SBR members scored highly in a variety of events (see list on page 18).

Pam & I had a wonderful time. Parade was so much more than we expected. The week went very quickly, and before we knew it, it was time to pack up the Porsche and head south. If you’ve ever considered attending a Porsche Parade, I would highly recom-mend it. We met so many wonderful people. And everything was made that much more enjoyable by the friendship and encour-agement of our friends from the Santa Barbara Region with whom we were able to spend so much time. It was a great week. I hope the pictures can give you a sense of what a parade has to offer. =

NEW ADVERTISERSPOTLIGHT

At times, it seems as if there is a collision repair (or “body shop”) facility in every industrial park

in every community. It is important to know which are okay, which are passable, the ones that are acceptable – and the ones that offer “premier” service to the car owner and impeccable repairs to the vehicle. In Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, the clear choice for the “premier” best in customer service and repairs is our newest advertiser, Premier Coach.

The categorization of “approved” or “premier” is not easily attained. For example, Premier Coach has been awarded by Porsche Cars of North America the honor of representing itself as a “Porsche Approved Collision Center.” There is no other PCNA approved entity in the two counties under the umbrella of SBR. The blessing was hard to come by as the process of attaining such certification is lengthy and very demanding. To secure the title, Premier Coach had to prove to PCNA that it was more than simply qualified to repair Porsches. It had to establish that it is an auto body collision repair shop that has successfully passed all the Porsche Factory training classes on the proper techniques, parts, materials and Porsche tools to use to correctly “remanufacture” a collision-damaged Porsche, just like it would be repaired at the Porsche Factory in

Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. The standards demanded by PCNA are very high! These certifications are sparingly issued, and only to the best of the best.

The Porsche Approved Collision Center certification process for the Camarillo location of Premier Coach took just over 24 months. The repair facility includes 17,000 square feet of covered work area, two spray booths, a dedicated Porsche parts room, a clean room with blueprint

area, special floor lifts, Porsche-specific welding and riveting tools, a paint storage and mixing room and, last but not least, a spacious guest waiting area..

Cliff Sullivan, the principal managing the company, was eager, willing and, of course, able to overcome all the trials and tribulations necessitated by the approval process. He, along with his entire team of automotive experts, poured his heart and soul into meeting and exceeding all certification requirements. The exemplary status of the business is instantly recognizable as one enters the premises and is greeted as a friend and fellow Porschephile. The staff of many years’ experience will see to every detail so that your car’s repair is done right and to your satisfaction. At this repair facility you’re a guest, not simply a customer. Cliff has owned several Porsches, with the latest acquisition being the 991 GT3. He knows what it means to love your Porsche, and he treats each and every Porsche that enters his facilities as if it were his own.

Cliff learned at an early age the skill sets needed for quality auto body repair from his father, a recognized expert in the field. Cliff, eager to start his own shop in 1986, formed a business partnership with the then new RUSNAK/Westlake auto dealership to service its customers’ collision repair needs with factory-like attention to detail.

Premier Coach has two locations: the original shop at 3053 Los Feliz Drive in Thousand Oaks and the new Porsche Approved Collision Center at 852 Via Alondra in Camarillo. Premier Coach also offers high-end quality collision repairs on other makes of vehicles as well at both locations. Please mention you saw its ad in Der Auspuff when you give Cliff a call at 805-389-9574. =

Porsche’s 919 Hybrid

BY CHRIS ANDROPOULOSSantaBarbaraRegionTechEditor

By the time you read this, it will be clear whether Porsche’s vaunted “Mission: 2014” campaign has

borne fruit. Most avid Porschephiles are well aware that their favorite marque has won the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race more than any other manufacturer, with 16 overall victories between 1970 and 1998 (Porsche has competed since 1951). The race has been inextricably linked with Porsche’s ethos since its earliest days, so the importance of the company’s return to top-level endurance racing cannot be overstated

The twice-around-the-clock contest at Le Mans is held each June in northwestern France on an almost 8.5-mile course that combines portions of a permanent racetrack linked by sections of temporarily closed public roads. Le Mans has run almost every year since 1923 and is the world’s most prestigious stage for showcasing automobile speed, technology, and durability.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans has always featured several different classes of cars running in the same race, with production-based classes featuring cars that are not radically different from street machines, along with one or more prototype classes of all-out race cars that have often showcased the latest in automotive technology.

After Porsche’s last overall Le Mans victory in 1998 with the GT1-98 race car, it stayed away from the upper echelon of Le Mans racing until this year (though

911-based GT3 race cars have amassed nine class victories in the same period). Porsche’s (now) parent/sister company, Audi, has dominated Le Mans since then, with 12 overall victories between 2000 and 2013, plus a 2003 victory by a “Bentley” racer powered and funded by its Audi parent company.

While Audi’s reign of dominance is impressive, it must be said that there was a relative dearth of serious competition from rival manufacturers in that period. Except for recent efforts by Peugeot and Toyota, most of Audi’s prototype rivals were privateer teams that never stood a chance against a factory team.

All of this has changed for 2014. The organizers of Le Mans have always strived for the contest to test the limits of modern technology and are known to radically overhaul the regulations from time to time to encourage innovation that might trickle down to street cars. More recently, they have encouraged “green” technologies to feature in the top prototype classes in an attempt to prove motor racing’s relevance in the modern world.

As a result, Audi has fielded diesel-powered Le Mans prototype racers from 2006, adding hybrid technology in 2011. Peugeot mounted a brief but fierce campaign in rival diesel-powered cars from 2007 to 2011, and won overall in 2009. Toyota debuted a gasoline-hybrid Le Mans racer in 2012. And Audi has allowed its “subordinate” brand from Stuttgart to

develop a rival top-class LMP1 (Le Mans Prototype, class 1) racer for 2014, known as the Porsche 919 Hybrid!

Le Mans organizers revamped the rulebook for 2014 and have created a Byzantine system of new rules regulating allowed fuel consumption, the amount of electrical energy recovered per lap, and even the amount of computing power required to orchestrate the complex hybrid systems. There are strict fuel consumption limits during the race, and each car in the LMP1 class is required to use a standardized ultrasonic sensor to monitor the rate of fuel flow, just as in Formula One.

The rules changes have achieved the intended effect, with major manufacturers recognizing the obvious link between Le Mans endurance racing and the trend of ever increasing fuel economy standards for road cars. Nissan is even fielding an all-electric race car in an exhibition class. Audi, Toyota, and Porsche have all thrown hats into the ring that is Le Mans 2014, and the three automakers have invested a combined $1 billion in developing rival LMP1 race cars for this year. High stakes, indeed.

All three of the resulting hybrid-electric racers meet the new regulations but have taken completely divergent paths. Audi’s new R18 e-tron Quattro is powered by a 3.7 liter V6 turbodiesel driving the rear wheels, assisted by two electronic motors driving the front wheels. A special

23JUNE 2014 AUSPUFFDER

flywheel assembly that rotates at extremely high speeds is used in lieu of a battery to capture and store kinetic energy to be released as necessary to power the electric motors.

The Toyota TS040 Hybrid combines a naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter gasoline V8 with electric drive for the front wheels (for a combined 1,000 HP!), but uses a lightweight supercapacitor instead of a battery for energy storage.

The Porsche 919 Hybrid employs a traditional lithium-ion battery to store energy for the electric motor that drives the front wheels, combined with a turbocharged gas V4 engine to drive the rear wheels. A V4? Yes, a V4.

Porsche determined that a small 4-cylinder engine was optimal to meet the 2014 regulations for power and fuel economy. Rather than the usual inline-4 configuration, the unorthodox V4 cylinder layout was chosen by Porsche for packaging and efficiency reasons. The overall length of the engine is very short, and it is mounted directly behind the cockpit. This allows for a centralization of mass for optimum chassis balance and handling. The large single turbocharger and its energy recovery unit (more on this later) are nestled within the “vee” of the cylinder banks for space optimization and to lower the center of gravity.

The reason for the V4 configuration’s lack of popularity (except among fans of Lancias and some European Fords and early Saabs) is inherent imbalance. Inline-4 engines are already imbalanced from a firing pattern standpoint, and arranging the same number of cylinders in a V formation adds mechanical imbalance

to the equation. Porsche has already completely redesigned the 919’s V4 engine after an early version shook apart the rear suspension during testing. (As in most race cars, the 919 uses the engine as a stressed member of the chassis.)

In the usual fashion of modern high-stakes racing, the exact engine details are still shrouded in secrecy (the engine is blurred out on Porsche’s own YouTube video of the V4 on a test stand!), but one

must assume that carefully designed balance shafts are involved, a la 944.

No n e t h e l e s s , Porsche has soldiered on with its original engine concept, and the 919 has s u c c e s s f u l l y completed intense p r e - s e a s o n endurance testing.Two 919 Hybrids have been fielded in six-hour endurance races at Silverstone (UK)

and Spa Francorchamps (Belgium). In contrast to its tight-lipped policy

on the 919’s internal-combustion engine, Porsche is positively shouting details of the hybrid system from rooftops. The turbocharged, 2.0 liter V4 gas engine sends approximately 500 HP to the rear wheels. An electric motor can temporarily add another 250 HP by driving the front wheels. A lithium-ion battery pack provides energy storage and is located next to the driver for optimum weight distribution.

A KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) system is used to recover kinetic energy generated by braking, as in any modern hybrid passenger car. In addition, waste heat from the exhaust-driven turbocharger is used to drive a generator that further replenishes the battery pack. (This is the large cylinder

on top of the engine in the cutaway picture at left.) The transmission is a 7-speed sequentially shifted, single-clutch, race setup.

The chassis of the 919 is constructed almost entirely of carbon fiber, as is the norm for modern race cars. The body of the car has seen extensive development in the wind tunnel and with computational flow software and features a large dorsal fin for stability. Aerodynamic downforce approaches Formula One levels. The complete car weighs 870 kg (1,914 lbs, which is about 1,200 lbs lighter than a new 911 Carrera!).

The suspension system’s basic layout is shown in computer-animated videos on Porsche’s website, but the company is coy about its exact design. It is known to be a thoroughly modern setup with hydraulically linked dampers (known as “shock absorbers” in the USA) as in modern F1 cars. Apparently the system is very advanced, to the point where Porsche is seeking patent rights on its design.

The 919’s first two race outings of this year have shown mixed results. The first race at Silverstone in April saw the #20 car finish in 3rd place behind two Toyotas, and its sister car retired from the race early with an unspecified driveline problem. The Spa race of May saw a reversal of fortune with the #14 car finishing 4th behind the Toyotas and an Audi. #14 had qualified on

the pole position and led the early stages of the race but fell back due to an electrical glitch in the hybrid system. The sister #20 car was mired with damper and front axle issues and spent significant time in the pits being repaired.

All of this sounds a bit gloomy for Porsche’s prospects at Le Mans but is par for the course with a clean-sheet endurance race car design. Porsche’s competition from Toyota and Audi is formidable, but the team from Stuttgart has proven resilient in similar situations in the past.

Even if the 919 were to be a total racing failure, technical data gleaned from its competition regime is sure to find its way into future Porsche street cars. Porsche has, of course, already offered hybrid Cayenne and Panamera models, but a hybrid/KERS system is almost guaranteed to be available in the 911 in the near future. Your author also predicts that the turbocharger energy recovery system (TERS, if you will) will find its way into future turbo models in an effort to eke out every caloric unit of energy possible from the drivetrain. The hydraulically linked damper system is another probable transplant into Porsche’s top-end sports cars, as McLaren already offers such a system in its MP4-12C supercar.

If anything, Porsche’s reemergence into top-level endurance racing is a strong endorsement of the company’s overall health. Some purists are dismayed at Porsche’s metamorphosis into a purveyor of SUVs and sedans, with sports cars only accounting for 50% of worldwide sales. Nonetheless, the highly profitable four-door market has allowed Porsche to return to its rightful place at the pinnacle of endurance racing. This will inevitably pave the way to a bright future for the sports cars that we all know and love. Here’s to Mission: 2014! =

All In The Family, Part IIWhile checking in at Parade Headqua-

ters in Monterey, our own James Oldham noticed there was another Oldham regis-tered, and his given name was Jim!

James immediately went into “track-ing mode,” trying to find his namesake (not an easy task considering the 2000+ parade attendees).

Finally, at Friday evening’s Autocross Banquet at the Carmel Mission, James and Jim Oldham came face-to-face.

Jim Oldham (right) is from Boise, Idaho, and is a proud member of the Silver Sage Region. The “Oldham Boys” had a nice, long conversation, which will undoubtedly be a great parade memory for years to come.
