Thanks to new fundingfrom the People’s HealthTrust, using moneyraised by Health Totalvia the Health Lottery, plans can be put in placeto expand the site.

The £37,725 grantwill be used to doublethe size of the existingarea and allow the proj-ect to continue for anadditional two years.

After this time theaim is to establish anallotment association tooversee the site, makingit a permanent part ofthe community.

Currently the gardenoccupies around 600square metres of space.

Members of the localcommunity volunteertheir time and, workingtogether, attend weeklysessions to maintain thegarden and grow fruitand vegetables.

At the end of the ses-sion volunteers areinvited take a share ofthe harvest if anythingis ready to be picked.

Volunteers who liveclose-by use the com-

munity facility as theirown kitchen garden, andharvest what they needas and when.

Organised sessionsare held on Tuesdaysfrom 3pm until 5pm andThursdays from 10am to12 noon.

Taking on a newallotment can be quiteintimidating, so the ses-sions are a great way tointroduce people togrowing their own food.

Anyone interested inhaving their own plot orjoining the sessions cancontact Erin Baker on07432 673069 or [email protected]

K2Togs, which meets atthe theatre on Wednes-day mornings, aims tocreate a friendly group ofknitters who supporteach other by comingtogether to combat lone-liness, and at the sametime help good causes.

The ladies who knithave already created 16blankets which havebeen sent to SouthAfrica - each one com-prising 35 squares. That’s a lot of knitting!

This means a lot ofwool is needed to keepup with the pace of knit-ting - so donations aregratefully received.

They can be taken tothe Roses Theatre whereCommunity Builder JaneGriffiths will be pleasedto receive them.

New members arewelcome to join thegroup too: and there areadditional ‘knitting sta-tions’ elsewhere in thetown for those who can;tmake it to the theatre on

Wednesdays.For further informa-

tion call Jane Griffiths on07943 637773.

Growingand caringAnother group sup-ported by a grant fromthe Barnwood Trust inTewkesbury is the gar-dening group whichmeets at the Day CareCentre.

The group currentlymeets on Mondays from2pm until 4pm, andextends an open invita-tion for anyone whowould like to know moreabout gardening - orwould like to build newfriendships with thosewho share a commoninterest.

The group activelysupports people withdementia and their car-ers.

A windowsill garden-ing project is also in fullswing, which involvesparticipants from theDrop In at TewkesburyLibrary.

Both of these projectsare also going to beplanting up some of thebarrels at the top ofNelson Street as part ofTewkesbury in Bloom.

CELEBRATE 15 YEARSHELPING PEOPLE MOVE

IN TEWKESBURYBy Charlotte Wilkinson, Partner (I’m the one in red in the bottom photograph )

A BIG thank you, first and foremost, to ALL of our clients, people and companies who have

partnered with TAG as their Estate Agent or Letting Agent going way back to 1999.

What a varied 15 years it has been too, on the sales side we have seen a stable market, an accelerating market,a decelerating market, a stagnant market and today’s market which feels as if the balance is about right. Plentyof activity when pricing is sensible resulting in sales which allow people to move on, physically and figuratively, with their lives.

The lettings market has been a lot less volatile, demand and supply would appear to have been in balancepretty much since we started offering our lettings service in 2003. With few exceptions the quality of the rentalportfolio in our area is excellent, as are the tenants who take them. We now have in excess of 140 propertiesunder management and hundreds more where we have acted on a tenant find only basis.

Of course, over 15 years we have evolved and grown as a team and the company has a strong and enduringproven process which will benefit anybody looking to buy, sell, let or rent. Here’s my quick list:

The Ancient Grudge

Our beautiful building from which we take our name, prime position onTewkesbury High Street and open 7 days a week, The Ancient Grudgewas built in 1471 and is the only Tudor building in Tewkesbury with thedistinctive herringbone façade. A wonderful showroom!

Walton Cardiff Office

Ideally located in the hub of this thriving suburb and open until 9.00pmweekdays, the rear wall of our Walton Cardiff office features a fantastic28ft x 18ft aerial view of the development which was installed in 2003, afull 2 years before Google brought us Earth and Maps and aerial viewsbecame commonplace!

The Team

Myself, Vicky and Paul as partners are complemented by our wonderfulteam, Christa, Josh, Chris, Gill, Bev, Andy and Laura, there is over 100years experience in that line up!

Hours of Business

We make ourselves available for as long as we can to facilitate ourclients own working patterns, The Ancient Grudge is open 7 days aweek Mon-Fri 9.00am-6.00pm, Sat 9.00am-5.00pm, Sun 11.00am-3.00pmand our Walton Cardiff office is open Mon-Fri 9.00am-9.00pm. That’s 117hours a week!

Online Exposure

Tagestateagents.co.uk, Rightmove, Zoopla, Primelocation are the mainportals but we are on many less well known sites as well, most searchterms for property related enquiries in Tewkesbury on Google will returnTAG, front page!

History

Our archive shows that we have completed on sales and helpedpeople or families move on over 3000 properties in the last 15 years!

Company Ethos

It’s quite simple really, we want to help people move. Sometimes thingsare more complicated, sometimes things are straight forward, eitherway we use our experience on behalf of our clients to HELP THEM MOVEwhich is the whole point really, isn’t it?

Here’s to the next 15 years! Charlotte and the TAG team.

Timed to coincide withTewkesbury’s MedievalFestival, these open daysare a rare chance for thepublic to explore thisexceptional buildingknown as the 'lodgingover the great gate.' Thegatehouse is usuallyonly accessible as self-catering holiday accom-modation through TheLandmark Trust, whorestored the building inthe 1980s.

The little gatehousesurvived the destruction

of the great Benedictinemonastery in 1539 dur-ing the Dissolution ofthe Monasteries. Little isknown of the gate-house’s functions afterthe closure of the Abbey:such buildings wereoften used for parochialor manorial purposes, perhaps as a courtroomor a lock-up, but there isno written record of howthe Gatehouse was usedduring this period.

In disrepair, it wasrestored by John Martin

in the 19th century andthen settled back into itsprevious ornamental butempty existence, servingas a rather grand lodgeto Abbey House. Duringthis time it was used asboth an artist’s studioand a girl guide’s meet-ing room but the narrow, winding staircase madethe building difficult toaccommodate a perma-nent owner.

The Landmark Trusttook on the building in1986 after the sugges-tion of a local neighbour.Staying at AbbeyGatehouse provides agrand base to explore

the town of Tewkesbury, the Cotswolds andCheltenham.

All are welcome atthese free open days andthere is no need to book.A free informationleaflet will be availableto explain the historyand restoration.

Expo 58 byJonathan Coe£8.99 PB

A comedy book lacedwith gentle espionage tosavour on balmy sum-mer evenings.

In many respects thestar of this novel basedin 1958, is the Atomiumwhich was built inBrussels for theirInternational Exhibitionof that year and whichremains an icon of theBelgium capital and astructure that the city isrightly proud of.Thomas Foley, a quiet

contented husband andfather, is plucked fromthe obscurities of theCentral Office ofInformation to overseethe opening of "TheBritannia", a typicalEnglish pub, whichforms part of the BritishExhibition. His fatherwas an ex-publican; hismother Belgian, thus qualifying him forthis role. In Belgium, Thomas

is entranced by Anneke, one of the local Expohostesses and he is soonembroiled with othernationalities from eitherside of the iron curtaininto a world of spying,to which he is comicallyunsuited.A duo of English

agents make his lifeuncomfortable but are a

great double act of liter-ary humour, performinga duet of comic ver-biage. The story unfolds

over the months of theExpo, intrigue ticklingeveryday events asThomas conscientiouslytries to fulfill his super-visory role of the pub'sP.R. This despite theother staff and suspi-cious clientele. Allthe while he is seduc-tively mesmerised byAnneke, who leaves hisprim British emotionsaroused.A great read with

humour throughout. The late 1950s timeperiod is well presentedand for anyone who hasmarvelled at the inter-linked domes of theAtomium, you will beable to imagine the sky-line in which this come-dy is grounded

Wayne Phillips, afamily law solicitor forDF Legal said manylawyers have similarmisgivings about the so-called ‘Cinderella Law’which would make emo-tional neglect and abusea charge which could seeparents and guardiansfacing court proceed-ings.

“This may beunworkable and certain-ly littered with pitfalls,”said Mr Phillips.

His comments comein the light of the NSPCCrecent report that therehas been a 47% increaseof child emotional abusecases referred to thepolice and children’sservices.

Presently the Childrenand Young Persons Actstates that a personshould only be punishedfor treating a child “in amanner likely to causehim unnecessary suffer-ing injury to health.”

However, the newproposals in lastmonth’s (June) QueensBill if passed wouldinclude behaviour seento affect children’s emo-

tional development.“We could have situa-

tions where making achild start cryingbecause you haven’tbought him an ice-creamcould be deemed emo-tional abuse,” said MrPhillips.

“It could be a childfeeling that their siblingis being favoured orbeing in a tantrumbecause they haven’tbeen allowed to playwith their friends,” hesaid.

“Child cruelty is terri-ble and all should bedone within the law tostamp it out, but cover-ing emotional abuse isvery tricky,” he added.“We hope it can be, butat the moment it is aproposal that clearlyneeds a lot more clarifi-cation.”

The NSPCC’s figuresshowed 60,000 peoplecontacted their helplinein 2013/14, of which8,000 calls were aboutnon-physical cruelty.

Just like Dr Who’sPolice Box, behind theinnocuous door is awhole world of possibili-ties. Karen, along withher team (6 of whomhave been volunteeringin Tewkesbury for over 8years); have developedan independent charityshop that raises moneyfor Cancer Research UKand local charities.

Bookworm sells ahuge range of donatedbooks; they also have acosy little tea room hid-den at the back of theshop and a secret gardenwhere home-made cakesand ice-cream areserved. And..... theysupport the Pied PiperAppeal by sellingstamps, and TewkesburyFood Bank by helpingwith Admin space.Furthermore, they alsorun BookwormTewkesbury Transport

Karen, who is now inremission from Cancer, knows first hand howmuch the money raisedfor Cancer Research UKhas improved treatmentand continues to do so.“Once we were estab-lished one of the issueswe found we could helpwith was transportinglocal people to healthcareappointments, so we setup BookwormTewkesbury Transport. The scheme provides afriendly adaptable serv-ice for the communitywith a small number ofvolunteer drivers. Thereis no lack of customers, but we do have a short-age of drivers. With thehelp of more volunteers,we could expand ourservices for the benefitof our community.”

BTT has receivedsome financial support

via The Lloyd’s BankCommunity Fund, as aresult of a local publicvote. Karen added: “It isgreat to receive financialsupport but we also need‘people-power’. We aredesperately short of vol-unteers who can give afew hours a week todrive for us.

We have a variety ofother things that peoplecould help us with, sothere should be some-thing for everyone of allages; from making teas, selling book and onlinesales through to organ-ising events or helpingad hoc at busy times.Whatever you can offer,we would love to hearfrom you.

There are a lot of peo-ple looking for work whocould benefit from gain-ing experience and it isalso an opportunity toimprove your CV. “

Bookworm would alsolike to hear from anyonewho is recently retiredwith either a business orIT background. Karen:“Often after retirement, people still like to havean active role in society.

We would benefitfrom someone who couldcommit to helping uswith online, business tobusiness and marketingaspects of the shop. Ifyou would like to apply, please contact me for aninformal chat.”

So come on

As Bookworm celebrates its 4th birthday, (shop) Manager Karen Brennan tells us more asks for new companions to join their journey. On a drizzling Saturday afternoon as the marketpacks away, Spring Gardens is an unremarkable, but financially valuable car park, writes JohnDixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.Historically, however, it was very important as the

site of several industrial features; the railway, a cat-tle market, a factory making fairground equipmentand housing.Spring Gardens? There are no gardens or springs

today but there is the footpath which separates theMaltings from the homes of senior citizens. On the 1928 aerial photo, the footpath clearly acts

as the boundary with the houses, later known asSpring Gardens, to the left. At that time, it present-ed two rows of houses separated by a long garden. The development was built after the railway came

in 1840 and there were no windows on that side. However, the other aspect was quite fascinating asthe 2-up-1-down homes possessed the garden forvegetable growing (which young Hazel Stiff - aboveright - was enjoying in the 1920s) and a hut at theend which was a stocking weaver’s workshop. Atthat time this was the main occupation for so manylocals. This is verified by a sale notice of Weaver and

Moore (below) from 1868. It also reveals that theneed for housing had led to the conversion of theworkshops into housing and, certainly, censusesreveal it provided rented accommodation for widows. In some properties, the workshops were convertedinto commodious outdoor toilets, I believe. The houses were popular with skilled working

families in the 19th century but were allowed to dete-riorate until they were demolished in the 1950s. The area is once again threatened with change but

any developer will not just be digging up tarmac buta mine of domestic histories of many Tewkesburyfamilies! Happily, children like Hazel, still live withus to perpetuate the memories.

PHARMACY MATTERS with Peter Badham

The Commemoration of World War I is gathering pace—but it is cer-tainly not a celebration but a recall of how Tewkesbury people wereaffected, writes John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society.

Those who lost their lives are rightly honoured on war memorials—butthose who were wounded or unemployed or orphaned just had to get onwith life.

Life also changed for those who waited at home. It is very difficult torealise in days of 24 hour rolling news that there was no news of the greatepic retreat of the Glosters* until it trickled through two months later.

Tewkesbury Direct, in conjunction with Tewkesbury Historical Society, will try to share the experience vicariously by marking the main eventsmonth by month a century later. We shallfeature these and some of the peopleinvolved.

*If you wish to know more and “bust the jargon” then you can accesswww.ths.freeuk.com or visit the HistoryNotice board at Tewkesbury Library.

WE ARE NOW AN RACAPPROVED GARAGE

Just over a year ago we werecontacted by the RAC to askwhether we would considerbeing an Approved Garage forpatrol breakdowns in andaround South Gloucestershire.

It transpired that all their localpatrol personnel had been asked to nominate a localgarage that encapsulated their core values of value, customer service and quality. Their top nomination was us!

Since their endorsement we have received over 100 RACmember breakdowns in our area and we have been able tohelp many stranded motorists rescued from the M5.

From our busines name it would appear that we only repairand service French cars. Not true, over 50% of breakdownshave been non French cars, only last month we had an AudiR10 towed in! If your car needs some special attention, regardless of make and model, why not give us a phone usand sample what has made our business a success.

Her hair is well brushedand her makeup perfect-ly applied. Quite won-derful really as this ladywho I will call Mrs P isalmost totally blind. She moved into a

patiently in the lobby ofthe nursing home shestood up and smiledwhen she heard some-one say to her, “Mrs.PYour room is ready!”As she walked, arm in

said Mrs P, beamingbroadly." I really love it!"“But, Mrs. P. You

haven't seen it yet. Justwait.”“That has nothing to

do with it, " said MrsP.Happiness is some-thing you can decide onahead of time. Whether Ilike my room or notdoesn't depend on howthe furniture isarranged. What isimportant is how Iarrange my mind. “I have already decid-

ed I love it. It's a deci-sion I make every morn-ing when i wake up. Ihave a choice. “I can spend the day

in bed recounting thedifficulty I have withparts of my body thatdon't work quite as theyused to or eyes thatdon't see as they oncedid OR I can get out ofbed and be thankful thatsome of me does work.

“Every single day is agift and as long as i havebreath I'll focus on thenew day and all thehappy memories I havestored away ready forthis stage of my life.”She carried on, " Old

Apparently this buildinghas been described asthe “In place to hangout” by youths attendinga local youth club. Let me assure that

this practise is extremelydangerous and it is onlya matter of time beforesomeone is seriouslyinjured. I have just been

there myself and thewhole site is strewn withbroken glass, the floorsare unsafe and stairsdangerous. The premises is diffi-

cult to secure by virtueof its size and location, the owners have securedthe site but padlockshave been smashed from

the gates and boardsripped from the doorsand windows. If you hear of any

youths talking aboutthis property I ask you topass on this warning. I don’t want to be

paying any parents avisit to inform them achild has been hurt.

Apart from this, thesite and buildings areprivate property - andanyone entering unlaw-fully can be prosecutedfor trespassing.

Stay safeon twowheelsI seem to remember

mentioning this lastyear, but I make noapologies for repeatingmyself. Once again thegood weather hasbrought out many roadusers on two wheels. There have been sev-

eral serious accidentsinvolving motorcycles inrecent weeks so pleasetake great care on theroads. Don’t be tempted on a

summer’s day to go outwithout a full set of pro-

tective clothing and stur-dy gloves. Over the past few

weeks many of you willhave seen large groupsof motorcyclists meetingup at various locationsover the county. There have been

numerous reports ofanti- social riding andeven more noise com-plaints from residents. We are not against anysection of road users butplease be mindful of oth-ers when travellingthrough built up areas.I hope that you all

have a fantastic summerand that the weatherstays great for the schoolsummer holidays. If you are going away

and your property isgoing to be unattendedmake sure you take allthe normal precautions, stop the milk and news-papers, get a neighbourto park a second vehicleon your drive if theyhave one and ask themto keep an eye on yourhome.

URBAN WILDLIFEIt was a fabulous and forme, emotional day, theweather was great and arecord number of peopleattended. We are verygrateful to everyone whocontributed and we hopeto see you all again nextyear.Anybody living in a

town or city will be usedto seeing wildlife in andaround their neighbour-hood. Many people putout food for birds whichencourages a wide vari-ety of species to theirgardens. As more and more of

what was once prime, vital habitat for wild ani-mals disappears undertarmac and concrete withthe increasing amount ofhouses, schools and fac-tories being built, so ourwildlife is having toadapt to living their livesamongst us.At Vale Wildlife

Hospital we are dealingwith more and more

casualties of our modernday world, increasingnumbers of birds caughtby cats, hedgehogspicked up by the familydog and larger mammalssuch as foxes and badg-ers displaced by buildingwork. One of our recent

patients was ‘Ronnie’the rook, a bird thatcaused quite a stir in themiddle of Cheltenham. The unfortunate bird

became entangled innetting that had beenput above a shop to stoppigeons from roostingthere. The RSPCA had been

called to the bird, but

because it was so highup they were unable toreach the bird withoutenlisting the help of theFire and Rescue Service. They duly attended

with a fire appliance anda long-reach ladder unitand, much to the annoy-ance of a few drivers andshoppers, the road wasclosed so that they couldget their ladder up to thebird to rescue him. There was no alterna-

tive way of reaching thebird and it was just oneof countless situationswhere human livesimpact on wild animals, often with tragic resultsfor the wildlife. On this occasion,

although a few peoplewere inconvenienced atthe time, the outcome for

the bird was a success asthe rook was releasedagain after a few days ofcage rest at Vale. Birds coming down

chimneys, deer becom-ing disorientated in themiddle of busy towns, gulls causing problemsin cities, cats predatingmillions of animals, deercaught in metal railings. The list of situations

involving human andwildlife ‘conflict’ is end-less and will only getworse. We have to find away of living in harmo-ny with the wildlife thatwe share the world with. We have given the

wildlife no choice but toadapt to living in ourbusy world so we haveto adapt to having it hereamongst us.

Firstly I must thank everyone who attended our 30th Anniversary Open Day on 8th June and helped tomake it a tremendous success, raising over £10,000 of much-needed funds, writes Caroline Gould ofVale Wildlife Rescue.

Hundreds of visitors enjoyed demonstrations andtalks at last month’s Vale Wildlife Rescue Open Day,which celebrated 30 years of the centre’s work.
