Memorial Day

I know that many have celebrated the 4th of July with fireworks, family and friends.

We celebrate the independence of the United States of America as we know it.

Nothing like having a three-day weekend…for sure. But I want to take us back to

another holiday…Memorial Day.

I was on my way from work, I think, but I was listening to one of the gospel radio

stations on the AM dial, and the host was just going on and on, praising the troops

for the fantastic job they were doing in Iraq, Iran, and all of the other places that we

have service members deployed. Now to some, this was a great recognition to our

armed services. Being a retired veteran myself, I take great pride in my service for

over 24 years. I have awards from many campaigns to which I participated, in the

spirit of freedom and justice. But the one thing that bothered my so about this young

man’s rhetoric, was that, that is not the reason for Memorial Day.

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honors

men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as

Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an

official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting

cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Un-

officially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

You’re probably wondering, what’s the big fuss…it’s just another holiday. The sig-

nificance I see in what the radio announcer was saying and the meaning of the holi-

day is that the announcer had no clue as to why we were celebrating this holiday. It

was quite evident as to his comments that were heard over the airwaves by whomev-

er was listening. But what really had my mind going was: how many believed that

this was the reason for this holiday, and never realize its true meaning. It’s quite im-

portant that we know what we’re talking about in any means of conversation, so as to

avoid history repeating itself.

In Deuteronomy 11, Moses ascribes to the Israelites to love the Lord and obey His

commandments, to keep His judgments and statues. He reminds them of the pasts,

the atrocities and the triumphs. He also states that they, as a people should not forget

God’s promises, but also, not to turn away from God, and not to serve others, nor

forget where your blessings come from. Look at what God says:

Deuteronomy 11:18-23 (KJV) 18 Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou ris-est up.

20 And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates: 21 That your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, in the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers to give them, as the days of heaven upon the earth. 22 For if ye shall diligently keep all these commandments which I command you, to do them, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave unto him; 23 Then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than your-selves.

Teach the truth; make the truth a priority; ensure the truth is in our children’s hearts, because it’s not only a benefit to you, but

it will lengthen their days as a testimony as to God being true to His Word. Now what does this all have to do with Memorial

Day?

We have the responsibility to teach our children history. They need to know more than what the latest trends and fashions are.

They need to know their heritage. We cannot place that responsibility on our public schools, or schools of higher education.

Those institutions have their own mandates: we have a mandate by Almighty God, to teach our children their history. They

need to know, that was and still is a struggle to make it in this world today, and they should appreciate every gift that comes

from above. If we don’t place value in them, they will get their sense of value from a pimp or a pusher. They’ll get their value

from BET or VH1; they’ll get their value from the Real Housewives of Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles-or wherever the next real-

ity show will come from. They’ll get their value from the next video game, or next Tweet or Instagram. We need to give them

a glimpse of their history from our own lives, through our experiences, and see that if it had not been for the Lord on our side,

where would we be?

I hope that I don’t hear of another misnomer of a holiday or an event in life taken out of context. It’s important, my

brothers and sisters, to make sure that some histories don’t repeat themselves.

You've probably heard the word "arthritis" before. And now, you may be wondering if it could be affecting you. By definition, arthritis means

"joint inflammation," and it's used to describe more than 100 different diseases and conditions that affect joints, the tissues that surround

joints, and other connective tissue.

Arthritis can affect people differently. It's common in adults 65 and older, but it can affect people of all ages, races, and ethnic groups. In fact,

about 1 out of every 5 adults in the United States — around 50 million people — has reported being diagnosed by their doctor with some form

of arthritis. Two of the most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis have different causes, risk factors, and effects on the body:

Osteoarthritis pain, stiffness, or inflammation most frequently appears in the hips, knees, and hands. Rheumatoid arthritis commonly affects the hands and wrists but can also affect areas of the body other than the joints.

Even though they have these differences, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis often share common symptoms:

Joint pain

Stiffness Inflammation or swelling The importance of talking to your doctor.

Sometimes arthritis symptoms make it harder to do certain activities. By talking to your doctor about your symptoms, he or she may help you

find other ways to continue doing some of those activities.

Your doctor can also help evaluate your current treatment and may recommend other, more effective ways to help you manage your arthritis.

The sooner you take action and talk to your doctor, the sooner you can start managing your arthritis symptoms more effectively.

Often called "wear and tear" arthritis, osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis in the U.S. In most cases, over time,

cartilage in joints breaks down, and OA symptoms begin to occur. OA is most commonly found in the:

Knees

Hips

Hands and fingers Spine

Wrists, elbows, shoulders, and ankles can also be affected by OA, but this occurs less frequently. When OA is found in these joints,

there may have been a history of injury or stress to that joint. The symptoms of osteoarthritis

Typically, OA comes on slowly. For many, the first signs are joints that ache after physical work or exercise. As the disease progresses, other

most common symptoms include:

Pain in a joint

Swelling or tenderness in one or more joints

Stiffness after periods of inactivity, such as sleeping or sitting

Flare-ups of pain and inflammation after use of the affected joint Crunching feeling or sound of bone rubbing on bone (called crepitus) when the joint is used

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, it's important to talk to your doctor to find out if you have OA.

What is Rheumatoid Arthritis

This inflammation of the joint lining (called the synovium) can cause pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth, and redness. The affected joint may also

lose its shape, resulting in loss of normal movement. RA is an ongoing disease, with active periods of pain and inflammation, known as flares,

alternating with periods of remission, when pain and inflammation disappear.

RA can affect many different joints. In some people, it can even affect parts of the body other than the joints, including the eyes, blood, the

lungs, and the heart. Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Although RA is often a chronic disease, the severity and duration of symptoms may unpredictably come and go. With RA, people experience

periods of increased disease activity, called flare-ups or flares, alternating with periods when the symptoms fade or disappear, called remis-

sion.

If you experience some of these symptoms, you may want to talk to your doctor:

Pain and stiffness lasting for more than 1 hour in the morning or after a long rest

Joint inflammation in the joints closest to the hand, such as wrist and fingers, although the neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, ankles,

and feet can also be affected

Symmetrical pattern of inflammation, meaning both sides of the body are usually affected at the same time Fatigue, an occasional fever, and a general sense of not feeling well (called malaise)
