Aloha Mililani!

Summer is in full swing and we’ve reached my favorite month of the year… July… a.k.a. my Birthmonth! Yes that’s right, I said Birth “month”… why limit ourselves to celebrating just one day! Time passes by so quickly, we should celebrate each precious day—or month, as the case may be. So Happy National Blueberry Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Ice Cream Month and to all my fellow July birthdays, Happy July Birthdays Month!

In the spirit of celebrating the special people in our lives and our Mililani community, I’d like to tell you about just one of our special Mililani residents that passed away unexpectedly in February of this year—Carole C. Sussel. Carole’s niece wrote the following tribute that she shared with the MTA Board, and I thought I’d share some of it with you.

“Carole C. Sussel dedicated her time to improve the lives of dogs and their owners with the Leeward Training Club of Hawaii (LTCH) at Mililani Waena Park. As a resident of Mililani for over 20 years, Carole spent many Saturdays, working with puppies and their owners to build a foundation for obedience through games and exercises. She shared her knowledge by assisting the puppy

class for over 10 years. Forever young at heart, she dressed in silly costumes and made high-pitched noises to capture the attention of puppies in training. She was also known for bringing treats that dogs would crave. Smoked marlin was a crowd favorite. In her career with

LTCH, she helped over 1000 puppies and handlers graduate from class.

The holidays were Carole’s favorite time of year. She enjoyed walking in the Mililani Christmas Parade with her giant pups dressed in Santa hats and blinking lights. Her 5’2” frame was lost next to her Great Danes but you could hear her laughing and shouting ‘Merry Christmas!’ to the spectators.” Though I did not know Carole personally, I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. And as a dog lover myself, I wish to thank Carole’s family for her dedication to our furry friends and for her service to our Mililani community.

Quarterly MTAHomeowner Assessments

The MTA quarterly assessment is collected in accordance with Article VI, Section 6.02 of the Mililani Town DCCR. Assessment due dates are January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st in the amount of $102.00 per quarter (effective April 1, 2010). Quarterly reminder notices are sent to homeowners. A $10.00 late fee will be charged if payment is not received by the 10th of the month that payment is due.

The MTA Administrative Office located at 95-303 Kaloapau Street will be going through a year long renovation (or longer) starting August of this year. During this time, the Admin Staff and Managers will relocate to Rec Center 6 (95-1010 Konaku Street, Mililani Mauka).

To prepare for this move, the Admin Office will close on August 3rd and re-open at Rec Center 6 on August 17, 2015. The Business Offices at Rec Centers 3 and 7 will remain open during their normal business hours.

During the renovations, Rec Center 6 will be closed to rentals and classes. The pool and spa will remain open during regular pool hours and the Junior Masters swim program will continue to be held at Rec Center 6.

A Message from Senator Donovan M. Dela Cruz

The District 22 CIP requests for 2015 have been included in HB500, a bill relating to the State Budget that was adopted. I am pleased to report that funds in the amount of $10 million have been allocated for the acquisition of agricultural land that will be used for the Whitmore Project. The lands that the State is seeking to acquire are Castle & Cooke and Dole lands located in Whitmore Village and Mililani Mauka. I worked to secure these funds because acquisition of these parcels by the state will assure the preservation of agricultural lands and prevent them from being used for development projects. This will then enable local farmers to acquire long term leases allowing agriculture to be a viable industry and thereby reducing our dependence on imported produce. Also, included in the budget bill is $500,000 to investigate the feasibility of exchanging state land for agricultural parcels currently owned by Dole Food Company. Dole has listed over 15,000 acres of land for sale of which more than 5,000 acres are fallow agriculture land. As a member of the Committee on Ways and Means, I worked with the Chair and was able to secure this funding for the due diligence of a land exchange. I also would like to mention that next session I will be Vice Chair of the Committee on Ways and Means which oversees capital improvement project funding in the state budget. Further, the budget bill also includes $1.5 million to plan and design 15 additional classrooms at Mililani Middle School. Senator Kidani and I co-sponsored SB 1345 to transition multi-track campuses to single-track by building additional classrooms and giving overpopulated schools priority for capital improvement project funding to develop facilities. The Senate and House worked to secure funding to add classrooms to allow Mililani Middle to transition from multi-track to single-track. Mililani Middle School was designed for 1,300 students, however, the current enrollment is at nearly 1,800 students and the campus can accommodate only two-thirds of those students per day. It was determined that compared to those on a single-track calendar, students on multi-track were losing critical instruction time and the system has also created a hardship for some working parents. I also introduced SCR185, which was adopted, that requests the Department of Education to organize and coordinate out-of-school programs for kindergarten through twelfth grade. Also known as after school programs, the intent is to provide structured care and activities for children who may be home alone and susceptible to risky behaviors and other dangers. Hawaii is one of the most costly states for child care and out of reach for many working families. After school programs are intended to provide affordable care and ensure that Hawaii’s children are in safe and nurturing environments in the after school hours.

This session we were able to have a number of our priorities passed but there is still more that we can do and will be working on for the next session.

A Message fromSenator Michelle Kidani

Mahalo to MTA for offering this opportunity to report on the Legislative session that ended in early May. Bills we passed have been working their way through the review and approval process in the Governor’s office. Here are some highlights from the session.

The State operates on a two-year budget cycle and this year gave us a chance to formulate a spending plan for fiscal period beginning July 1 and continuing through June 30, 2017. Probably the best way to describe our approach to the budget is “cautiously conservative.” Both the Senate and the House money committees reduced spending levels in the already-slim budget sent to us by the Governor, and revenue projections reinforced the idea that we should not be looking at any large-scale new initiatives this year.

This session I accepted the Chairmanship of the Committee on Education, one of the most broadly-based committees in the Senate. It has responsibility for early education programs, all K-12 public schools, including charter schools, continuing education, and Hawaii’s Public Library System. I am pleased to report that even in a relatively tight budget year, we did manage to pass key legislation that supports the State’s commitment to early learning programs.

Senate Bill 820 – already signed into law – establishes in statute a prekindergarten program in the Executive Office on Early Learning that makes available preschool options for families who do not qualify for existing programs such as Head Start or Preschool Open Doors (POD) but who cannot afford private preschool. SB 64 appropriated $6 million for POD positions and subsidies for the program for another year.

Another bill – HB 11 – authorizes a $5,000 bonus incentive for teachers who are national board certified and who teach in a focus, priority or hard-to-fill school. That’s in addition to the $5,000 per year bonus for earning board certification.

Under provisions of SB 374, the “running start” program is renamed the “dual credit” program. It expands this early college course program to include ninth and tenth graders who will now be able to enroll in classes at University of Hawaii campuses tuition free.

And finally, SB 1345 requires the Department of Education to come up with a plan to phase out multi-track schedules in the four public schools on Oahu where they are currently in place – including Mililani Middle School. It requires the DOE to give priority to overpopulated schools in making its annual construction budget request. I am especially grateful to Mililani Middle School Principal Elynne

Chung who helped us work through several critical issues based on her school’s experience with the multi-track, year-round school calendar.

Here are a few of the projects in the construction budget that will impact Mililani schools and highway construction in the years ahead:Improving our schools• $1.5 million for plans and design work for 15

new classrooms at Mililani Middle School – the beginning of plans to phase out the DOE’s multi-track schedules as outlined in SB1345

• $500,000 for a school-wide upgrade to the electrical system at Mililani Uka Elementary

Roads and Highways• $17.25 million for land acquisition and

construction for the rehabilitation or replacement of Kipapa Gulch (Roosevelt) Bridge

Other bills of note:Rail tax - The current one-half percent excise tax surcharge paid by Oahu residents to help finance the City’s rail project was extended for five years beyond its current expiration date to 2027. The City had asked that it be allowed to continue 25 years, but lawmakers were firm in repeating their charge to the City that it must do everything possible to contain or reduce costs and that the project will be undergoing repeated reviews for accountability.

Tobacco Sales – We increased the minimum age required to purchase any tobacco product or e-cigarette devices from 18 to 21 years of age.

Kupuna Care – The budget includes $4.8 million for the Kupuna Care program for seniors; a separate bill provides an additional $3 million in support.

Medical Marijuana – The Legislature created a system of medical marijuana dispensaries for medical patients authorized to purchase marijuana. The bill lays out the process for applying for permits to open dispensaries that could begin operating in July 2016.

This was my seventh legislative session, and my first chairing a committee. Interests of our residents always are top-of-mind as we consider legislation. While the legislative work session is pau for this year, my staff and I are always available through my office at the State Capitol to serve your needs. I attend numerous community meetings through the year – including monthly meetings of the Mililani Neighborhood Board – where I report the latest from the Capitol. During the interim there are also many national conferences offered and which I am expected to attend as Chair of the Senate Education Committee

Mililani schools had an exceptionally great year and I am sure all of us appreciate the hard work of teachers such as Jana Fukada at Mililani Uka who was selected for the prestigious Milken Educator for 2015 and 2015 Middle School Principal of the Year, Elynne Chung of Mililani Middle School. It was great teachers and coaches at MHS who brought us the title of “Top Public High School in Hawaii” by U.S. News and World Report; State champsionships in Football, Girls Soccer and Boys

A Message fromRepresentative BethFukumotoAt the end of May, I held one of a series of talk stories to update constituents about the Legislature’s accomplishments this session, such as the passage of a bill to require the Department of Education to develop a plan to end multi-track schedules at our schools (SB1345) and funding for Preschool Open Doors (SB64). I’m happy to say that votes I took were in line with the results I received before Final Reading of the survey I sent to the community I work to represent.

A lot of the questions that came up at the May talk story were about HB321 to establish dispensaries for medical marijuana patients. I shared a lot of the same concerns while the bill was being heard, and the House Committee on Health and its chair in particular worked hard to address them as best as we could. Things like background checks for contractors and subcontractors; penalties for using butane; and restrictions against dispensaries near residences, parks and schools were some of the issues we discussed at the talk story. With 81 percent of respondents in favor of its passage, I voted yes on HB321. I had some reservations about a procedural exception that was made for the bill, but I fully support helping to make sure that people like Maile, a Mililani resident, have reliable access to safe, lab-tested treatment.

Legalizing marijuana for recreational use, on the other hand, was opposed by 74 percent of respondents. None of the bills to allow it made it to Final Reading.

Traffic mitigation has consistently been one of Mililani’s top priorities. This session, the Legislature passed HB134 to extend the city’s authorization for its general excise tax (GET) surcharge to help pay for its rail project.

Before Final Reading, 71 percent of respondents were in favor of the authorization extension, with just 3 percent in favor of the city raising property taxes and 26 percent in favor of the city ending the project (this was not an option for the state Legislature). I voted in favor of HB134 to reflect my community’s preference.

Authorization for the surcharge is currently set to expire in 2022. If enacted, HB134 would allow the City Council to vote to extend the surcharge until 2027 as a possible alternative to a large increase to property taxes. Concerns about the project and its funding should now be directed to your city councilmember.

The majority of respondents also expressed support for prohibiting e-cigarette use wherever smoking is banned (83 percent), accomplished by HB940, and privatizing state hospitals that are having trouble controlling costs (64 percent). I voted in favor of HB940 and of HB1075, which authorizes an agreement to transfer Maui Regional System facilities to a nonprofit management entity. Both bills passed.

The state budget that passed this year, HB500, included $12.87 billion for fiscal year 2016 and $13.3 billion in fiscal year 2017 from all funding sources, including federal funds. Capital improvement project appropriations to benefit our community include $17.25 million for the Kipapa Gulch Bridge rehabilitation/replacement project and $1.5 million for the plans and design for enough classrooms to give Mililani Middle School the capacity to be a single-track school.

Other bills that passed this session include HB10 to allow the Department of Education to administer auto-injectable epinephrine (“epi pens”) to students; SB265 to strengthen laws and penalties for sex trafficking, as well as increase support for victims; SB1030 to increase the minimum age for tobacco and e-cigarette sale, possession and use to 21-years-old; and HB1513 to authorize matching grants to awardees of alternative energy research grants from the Office of Naval Research.

It is a privilege to serve you and our community as your State Representative. The one-on-one contact with members of our community, hearing your concerns, opinions, and feedback firsthand, was vital to me as the Legislature focused on crucial decisions that impact our entire state. My dedication to developing solutions for the challenges our community faces is concentrated on enhancing the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

During the 2015 Legislative Session I served on six House Committees (Agriculture, Economic Development & Business, Education, Higher Education, Tourism, and Veterans, Military, & International Affairs, & Culture and the Arts), where I had the opportunity to hear testimony and weigh in on important issues. This year 252 bills were passed. A few bills that may be of interest to you are HB 830 which provides an exemption from Historic Preservation Review for those homes approaching 50 years, HB 321 which establishes a system of medical marijuana production and retail dispensaries, HB 134 which extends the county surcharge from the current Dec. 31, 2022 sunset date to Dec. 31, 2027, SB 1030 which increases the minimum age for sale, possession, consumption, or purchase of tobacco products or e-cigarettes from 18 to 21, and SB 1345 which requires the Department of Education to develop a transition plan to end multi-track schedules in public schools. Many great accomplishments and events have taken place in our community this past Session. In the world of athletics, I want to congratulate both the Mililani High Girls’ and Boys’ Soccer Teams, who won the State Championships this year in very exciting overtime games. And who can forget the night that Mililani High made us so proud by winning the State Championship for Football! These distinguished achievements wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication and support of our district’s teachers and staff. We are blessed to have so many wonderful educators in our community who truly care about the full education of our keiki.

I would like to recognize two very special individuals who were honored at the Hawaii State Capitol this year, Teacher Jana Fukada of Mililani Uka Elementary School, winner of the prestigious National Milken Award, and Principal Elynne Chung of Mililani Middle School, who was selected as the 2015 Principal of the Year. In addition to these wonderful educators, I would also like to acknowledge Darlene Fujimoto, who was one of my Mililani High School teachers who pushed me to always do my best and let me know when I wasn’t cutting it. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for allowing me to serve our community for the last eleven years. My family and I are truly honored to be able to work on behalf of our community and our families.

I would like to take this opportunity to update you on what I have been working on since the beginning of this 2015 Legislative Session.

Mililani Projects in the State BudgetAs Mililani Town’s Representative, I continue to be involved in exploring job growth, improving public safety, and investing in our community schools. I am proud to announce that our community will receive over $19 Million in projects for our schools, neighborhood infrastructure, and other community projects. These are additional projects adding to those currently ongoing throughout our community. These projects are vital to support our children’s education, our families’ safety and maintaining the special beauty of Mililani.

Included in the 2015-2017 State Budget are the following projects:• Mililani Uka Elementary School

Construction to complete a school-wide electrical upgrade $500,000

• Mililani Middle SchoolPlans and Design of a 15-classroom building $1,500,000

• Kipapa Bridge, Kamehameha Highway, Waipio/ MililaniLand Acquisition and construction for the rehabilitation or replacement of Kipapa Gulch Bridge $17,250,000

Total Funds for Mililani inthis year’s State Budget: $19,250,000

Water and Land Committee Legislative Accomplishments

I am happy to share with our community the many improvements the House Committee on Water and Land was fortunate to achieve under my leadership in my first year serving as its Chairman:• House Bill 444: Beach and Park

Restoration, a bill I introduced successfully passed the legislature to appropriate $6 Million to begin a statewide beach and park restoration and preservation effort. This legislation will greatly assist our eroding beaches throughout the State using money from Hawaii’s tourism tax to restore our beaches from erosion.

• House Bill 830: Residential Property Exemption, a bill I introduced successfully passed the legislature to protect homeowners of home which is 50 years or older from an existing and unnecessary bureaucratic system. This bill will exempt homeowners with older homes from a time consuming “historical review process” when they apply for a building permit to modify their home.

I wrote this bill specifically with Mililani homeowners in mind. Mililani town is 47 years old, the first generation homes sold in Mililani are likewise 47 years old. If this law was not amended by my bill, in three years Mililani homeowners would experience a massive bureaucratic delay from the State government in order to renovate or modify their homes. I am very pleased that this bill passed the Legislature to exempt residential homeowners from the State’s time-consuming “historic review” process and directly help our Mililani homeowners.

Senate Bill 284: Turtle Bay Conservation Easement, a bill my office vigorously worked on protects and preserves 562 acres of Oahu’s north Shore land located near the Turtle Bay Resort and Kawela Bay with a “conservation easement”. This Conservation Easement will forever protect (by contract, in perpetuity) all 562 acres from any future development made by the land’s owner. Beside purchasing the development rights for this 562 acre Conservation Easement, the bill also purchases 55 acres fronting Kawela Bay which will be owned by the State of Hawaii.

Our House Committee on Water and Land worked diligently to preserve Hawaii’s unique and scarce natural resources this year to malama our ‘aina for future generations to enjoy Hawaii as much as we do.

A Message from Council Chair Ernest Y. MartinThis year I want to first and foremost highlight the completion of the rehabilitation of Meheula Parkway. As I have noted, the rehabilitation of this main thoroughfare was a top priority for me as residents of Mililani regularly communicated their concern over the condition of the road. I would like to thank the residents of Mililani for their patience during this project. With Meheula being the only way in and out of Mililani Mauka, there were times when traffic congestion was a major concern. My office made several requests of the contractor to make as many accommodations as possible to mitigate traffic concerns. In the end I think we can all agree that the inconveniences were worth

it as we now enjoy a smooth and safe ride along Meheula Parkway.

I would also like to highlight the passage of Bill 75 which created a Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park Fund and Bill 40 which created a Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Fund. I introduced these two bills in response to major concerns from supporters of these flagship parks that provide great benefit to residents of Mililani. These parks are two of only three parks on the island that charge user fees. When fees were established in 2010, park users were told that the fees would be used for maintenance and improvements to the parks. Creation of these two funds is a way to ensure that the fees are directed back to the parks for that purpose. It is important that we properly maintain and make needed improvements to avoid costly repairs. Athletes and members of the community of all ages benefit from the use of these parks and facilities which greatly contribute to a healthy lifestyle and improve overall quality of life. In addition, these two flagships parks have the capacity to host large scale events like local, national and international tournaments. These events generate great economic benefits for the City and County of Honolulu and provide great opportunities for our local athletes.

Another priority is the completion of the Master Planned Improvements for the Mililani Mauka District Park. I was pleased that the basketball courts were completed and I look forward to the full build out of the park. I am a strong supporter of City parks as they greatly contribute to the overall quality of life for residents. As we all know, organized sports play a huge part in the lives of our children and youth and help them to develop skills and engage in positive activities. I have included funding for two major projects for the Mililani Mauka District Park; $2,915,000 for a lighting system for a baseball field, basketball courts, and tennis court and $225,000 to plan, design, construct and inspect a tennis court.

Finally, I am happy to report that there will be no increases to real property taxes in the upcoming fiscal year. The Honolulu City Council worked diligently through the budget process under the direction of Budget Chair, Councilmember Ann Kobayashi to deliver a budget with no tax or fee increases while funding critical City services. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of the City and County of Honolulu and residents of Mililani. A Message fromCouncilmember Ron MenorIt has been a hectic but very productive year for me as your City Councilmember.

One of the aspects of my job that I find rewarding is attending as many end-of-the-year school activities, awards assemblies and commencement ceremonies as possible in a show of support for our schools. I would like to congratulate the graduates


of the Class of 2015 and offer my best wishes for continued success.

Congratulations are also in order to two special educators. The first is Mililani Uka Elementary School educator Jana Fukada who earlier this year was named a recipient of the prestigious Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award for excellence in teaching. The Council at its June 3rd meeting presented Ms. Fukada with an honorary certificate for receiving the Milken Award as well as for other numerous accomplishments.

The second educator is Hanalani School Principal Winston Sakurai, who was named the Hawaii State Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Our community is indeed fortunate to have such outstanding educators providing quality education for our children.

The Council approved the City’s FY 2015-2016 operating and capital budgets. Budget items that will benefit Mililani and Central Oahu include funding for:• Rehabiliation of Streets to include Kuahelani

Avenue between Meheula Parkway and Lanikuhana Avenue; a segment of Lanikuhana Avenue between Anania Drive and Meheula Parkway; and Kaholo Street and Ulukoa Street. Funds are needed for repaving work for these areas. Work on other streets will also be done.

• Park improvements and maintenance and support services at Central Oahu Regional Park (CORP).

Council Chair Ernie Martin and myself also participated in a special certification ceremony to sign documents formally establishing Bill 75 (2014) CD1 which creates the CORP Special Fund. The fund would receive deposits of all special revenues generated to be used for needed improvements, maintenance and repairs at this important park. At its June 3rd Council meeting, the Council also approved Bill 40 (2015) which creates a Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park Fund and provides an additional source of revenues for much-needed improvements, upkeep and maintenance of the complex.

My office constantly works to forward concerns affecting our community to the appropriate City departments. The City finally relocated the crosswalk on Kipapa Drive adjacent to Kipapa Elementary School to make it more convenient and safer for students to cross the street to get to and from school. The City also installed a painted island on Meheula Parkway to enhance delineation of the south-bound right turn only lane onto Kuahelani Avenue to provide additional cues for improved motorist safety. I have also asked the City to move forward with additional improvements to address traffic hazards at various intersections, the repair of lights at Mililani District Park, and other concerns.

Summer Lottery (May-July)

As always, dates will open a year-to-the-date in advance. Lotteries will take place at Recreation Center 3’s Conference Room. Lottery sign-up is from 8:00am- 8:20am. Lottery drawing is at 8:30am (representative must be present). The lottery is only for Rec 1, Rec 3, Rec 5 and for weekends at the Rec 7 pavilions.

One representative per property address may stand in for the Homeowner/Head of Household in the lottery. The representative must be able to provide the Homeowner/Head of Household’s legal name, property address and phone number. The actual Homeowner/Head of Household must sign the contract within 24 hours and pay in full. This person must also have a valid MTA ID card. If there is no signature and no payment after 24 hours, the contract will be voided.

Pool Reservations& Lifeguards

POOL RESERVATIONS AND LIFEGUARDS: All reservations for the use of a swimming pool will require payment for the services of MTA lifeguards. One lifeguard is required for every 35 people in the pool area regardless if they are swimming or not. Two MTA lifeguards are required at Rec 4 regardless of the headcount. Lifeguards must remain on duty as long as there are people in the pool area. There is no “grace-period” for setting-up or clean-up for swimming pool rentals. Flotation tubes and pool toys are provided by MTA at Recs 3 and 4.

BBQ PavilionReservations

A signed Rec 7 Pavilion Reservations Form and payment in full must be submitted at the time of reservation. The rental fee is $50.00 per pavilion. Reservations open a year-to-date in advance and are taken on a first come, first served basis. The maximum capacity of each pavilion is twelve people. Same day back-to-back pre-reservations are not allowed. Alcohol, tents, extra tables and amplified music are prohibited. All pavilion users must exit the recreation center at the end of the reservation. No refunds are given for cancellations.

The rental fees include the use of the hall, tables, chairs, kitchen and restrooms. An MTA Member Service Coordinator and janitorial services will be provided, with the exception of pool reservations. Alcohol is not permitted.

No overnight camping or lining up in advance. A lottery system will be in place for the months of May-July (see below). The first two hours of all hall reservations are designated for set-up. Halls must be vacated by the times stated in the Rental Agreement. Reservations may be made up to one (1) year prior to the desired rental date. A minimum of thirty (30) days notice is

There is no limit to the number of times a yard can be nominated, but a yard can only win once per year. To be eligible to be nominated, the property must be owner occupied and in good standing with the Association. In addition, the owner must agree to have a picture of their yard shown in the MTA newsletter and on the MTA web site. The winner will be published in a picture with the Sponsor and nominating Covenant Specialist.

Kids learn TO swiM

Pre-school: Participants meet with an instructor one-on-one for 10 minutes and learn pre-beginner skills, such as submersion, and are introduced to freestyle. Participants must be 2½-5 years old.

Level 1 - Water Exploration: Participants learn buoyancy, breath control, and the introduction to freestyle and backstroke. Classes are 30 minutes long. Participants must be at least 5 years old.

Level 2 - Primary Skills: Participants refine the fundamentals of freestyle and backstroke, including arm movement, kicking, body position, and breathing/ timing. Classes are 45 minutes long.

Level 3 - Stroke Readiness: Participants learn to master freestyle and backstroke and learn the fundamentals of elementary backstroke. Level 3 classes may be held in deep water, so participants must be comfortable swimming 10 meters without assistance. Classes are 45 minutes long.

Level 4 - Stroke Development: Participants

These free events are held on the first Friday of every month from 4:00pm-8:00pm at Rec Center 1. We’ll provide the floaties, you bring the fun! All ages welcome. No registration necessary.

will continue mastering freestyle, backstroke, and elementary backstroke and learn the fundamentals of breaststroke and sidestroke. Classes are 45 minutes long.

Level 5 - Stroke Refinement: Participants will continue mastering freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and sidestroke and will learn the fundamentals of butterfly, open turns, dives and other entries. Classes are 45 minutes long.

Level 6 - Skill Proficiency: Participants will continue to refine all strokes and build their endurance with flip turns. Classes are 45 minutes long.

Registration: Due to the popularity of the Kids Learn-to-Swim classes, a registration date is set for each 2-month session. Swim Report Cards are required for returning participants. Payment is due upon registration.

MTA Member registration for the August-September Session (Pre-school through Level 6) will be on Saturday, 5/30/15 at Rec Center 3. Registration for Sponsored Guests

will be on Monday, 6/1/15. The June-July session is from June 8th through July 28th.

Kids Learn to Swim Class Rules: Parents may observe classes from the deck seating areas only. No one is allowed in the swimming or wading pools except the class participants and instructors. We discourage parents from interfering with classes by talking to their child, yelling words of encouragement, reprimanding or making gestures. Parents, who have children 11 years old and under need to be present for the entire swim class. Parents are responsible for escorting participants to and from the lesson area.

MASTERS SWIM PROGRAM (must be 18 years old or older) This program works on stroke refinement and endurance for proficient swimming. Participants must be able to perform back and front crawl stroke, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, butterfly and open and flip turns. Fee: $60.

LIFEGUARD CERTIFICATION CLASS (must be 15 years old or older) This is an American Red Cross certification course in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. On the first day of class, participants must demonstrate the following skills: Swim the front crawl for 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke. Retrieve a 10-pound object from 10 feet of water and then swim 20 yards with the object. Fee: $165.

FIRST AID/CPR/AED for Schools and the Community (must be 15 years old or older). This is an American Red Cross certification course. Participants in this course learn to recognize and respond to emergencies including cardiac and breathing emergenciesfor the adult, child, and infants as well as first aid and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Fee: $50.

Participants of all fitness levels will enjoy water workouts to improve strength, balance, endurance and flexibility. Classes are led by a fitness instructor and are conducted to music, both in waist-to-chest deep water and in deep water. These classes use a punch card system that can be used for any of the Water Aerobics classes during the 2-month session. Must be at least 18 years old to participate. Classes are not held on holidays.
