PETALUMA YACHT CLUB
CHICKEN SCRATCH
Anne and I are pleased to be members of the PYC, and we want to thank our sponsors Tom and Linda Corbett and Houston Porter & Drei Pierotti for bring-ing us into the club. I am a native of Petaluma, educated in Petalu-ma area schools and the University of San Francisco. Anne grew up in Milwaukee, holds a bachelors degree from Marquette University, and an MBA from USF. We both have two sons. My boys are 29 and 26, while Anne’s are 23 and 20. I am the President and owner of Fishman Supply Company a Janitorial and In-dustrial Supply Company located here in Peta-luma while Anne is retired after a long career in corporate management and finance at Cost Plus World Market. Needless to say we’ve spent many hours discussing the pros and cons of small business ownership versus the world of a publicly traded company.
We both grew up around boats, but mostly ski boats and family boats of less than 20 feet .I am a private pilot and up until a couple of months ago owned a beautifully restored Cessna 205 with a group of seven owners. When we joined
the club we weren’t sure if or when we’d join the ranks of boat owners, we simply joined along with our long time friends Gar-rett and Nicole Hill and Kurt and Esther Schau when the club was looking for new members. Then, in an odd twist of fate, a ma-jority of my partners in the plane voted to sell it and Continued on page 2

The Hills and Schau’s started looking at boats. Anne and I jumped into the fray, and once we identified the boat we wanted it wasn’t hard to convince our 4th partner, Jeff Mayne, to become a partner in Sea Casa, a 42’ Carver Motor Yacht. We took possession about a month ago and we’re excited to be amongst the ranks of boat owners. Anne and I find a beautiful sense of calm when we’re on the water. We both think of being on a boat as our “happy place”. And for me, piloting the boat is much like piloting a plane. It requires a sense of order and repetition that over time becomes second nature, but is always necessary for safe operation. The discipline it requires seems to melt away the stresses of a long day or week. We are looking forward to sharing Sea Casa with our friends and family and to participating in club activi-ties. We’d love to take her out fishing or up the Delta for a long cruise. Who knows where we might end up? But we’re loving the options right about now; thanks to everyone making feel very welcome.
Greatness is not where we stand, but in what direction we are moving....we must sail, sometimes with the wind, sometimes against it, but sail we must, and not drift nor lie at anchor. -

left hand side, if you are behind the bar looking
out. (Where we house the ice when the bar is
open) Seemingly the joints on the drain were not
lining up correctly, thus causing the water from
the melting of the ice to run on the floor. Don
Roberts put a metal flat plate under the sink to
keep the pipes from being jostled or bumped
when a crate or tub is put under the sink.
Financials are in order, board continues to re-
ceive a copy of financials and bank statements to
confirm the balances match.
We continue our fun with Anchors Aweigh for a

HOLLYWOOD AT THE PYC ~ MEMORIAL DAY EVENT
MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND 2016
“HOLLYWOOD” ……another Smashing Success!! At least
60 members came together this year to help put on the
Memorial Day Weekend event that was well attended by
16 bay area clubs with over 200 people (including PYC
members) and over 50 boats in the turning basin!!
Members came to the planning meetings to offer their
suggestions after our Commodore, Tina Powell, chose the
theme, Hollywood!! We took it from there with commit-
tees forming and people within our “village” volunteering
to head up the committees for decorating, planning for
the continental breakfast, Sunday’s “Breakfast at Tiffa-
ny’s,” as well as a fantastic dinner. Several of our newer
members jumped in too which gave them the opportunity
to see just what this weekend is all about. Yes, it is work,
but it is enjoyable to work side by side and at the same
time meet all the people that come to our weekend and
express their gratitude for how fantastic our weekend is
year after year. I believe, as others in the club have ex-
pressed, that it makes us a more cohesive “family.”
A special thank you to Tom Corbett for taking the lead as
the boat greeter” par excellance”…..for fielding calls to
keep boaters that might have come up the river at precari-
ous times from doing so and then being down at the docks
making sure day after day that the boats were able to en-
ter the turning basis and had the help they needed to tie
up safely at the docks.
A special thank you to Jill Olson, one of our newer members, for taking on Saturday’s Continental
Breakfast with a crew of volunteers and for Don Roberts leadership and organization of Sunday’s
breakfast. Roy & Barbara Johnston took over “Charlie Chaplin’s poker walk which was the biggest
to date followed by Mac & Francesca and their crew putting on a fabulous dinner.
Lots of people dressed up in costumes and walked the red carpet with prizes given for their effort in
several categories that we have not had before.
Thank you to all of you that donated items for the raffle. The raffle items increased our income for
the event by over $700.
And the Academy Award for the Best
Event of the year …..goes to Gail Swift
for being the Best Producer, Best
Director and Best Coordinator ~ Again!!!
Page 11 PETALUMA YACHT CLUB
Our Saturday night entertainment, David Martin’s Houseparty did not disappoint!! They deliv-
ered and then some, playing straight through without breaks for over 3 hours!! Audience partici-
pation included!! People raved about them!!
Thank you Sheila and Gardner Bride for providing coffee for both breakfasts from their business,
Petaluma Coffee and Tea, just a little over a block from the club.
Thank you of course to all the bartenders covering the different shifts and thank you to David
Quist. He not only kept the bar in order he was able to also run the Sunday games with our mem-
bers adding some creative games this year. The “Float Your Boat” contest was again well received!!
A highly competitive time, and no one splashed this year!! Linda Lockwood and Stacy Horton sug-
gested we fund the acquisition of a larger pool to accommodate the boats which worked really well.
They loaded cargo and as the boats began to sink, one by one, the final boat standing was from Bel
Marin Keys Yacht Club. A trophy was given this year for this game as it is much more involved.
Amazingly, Bel Marin Key’s Yacht Club walked away with the Best and Worst Poker Hand, the Float Your Boat trophy AND their team won the overall games!! They had one heck of a big guy sit on their team which cost us several cases of beer to balance out the teeter totter!!
I still run into people that participated in the weekend talking about how much fun they had. I have shared emails received from those that attended thanking us for all our efforts to show them all such a great time at our club. Whether you attended the weekend or could not be there, go to the PYC website or to the link on Shutterfly to view the photos.
Thank you all for your participation. Thank you Levi for being supportive again this year. Yes, I take this on year after year, but if you did not show up, it would not happen. We are all better for it!! YOU ARE THE BEST!!!

Official Flag Etiquette Do You Know a Gaff from a Mast Head from a Yardarm?
According to the US Power Squadron, many people are confused about the proper way to fly
the national ensign (US flag) from a yacht club “gaff-rigged” flag pole. The origin of the gaff-rigged pole such as the one we have installed on our deck began (surprise!) at sea. Because of all the sails carried on sailing vessels, the flag of a nation could not be clearly viewed if it was placed at the top of the mast (mast head). Since the stern of the vessel was the position of command and the captain's quarters were located aft, the nearest position from which they found it practical to fly the ensign was the gaff. Over time, this became the place of honor to display the national flag. This was the practice in the eighteenth century, when the US Navy was created. Even now that warships are made of steel, our navy still flies the ensign at the gaff peak when underway. While there is no US law specifying how a flag should fly on a gaff-rigged pole, it’s based instead on long-standing nautical tra-dition. The usual argument given by those that think it’s in-correct to fly the national ensign from the gaff is that the national ensign is flying below a club burgee. The logic, however, is that when the ensign is flown from the gaff, a flag flown at the masthead is not consid-ered above the ensign because it is not being flown directly above the ensign on the same halyard. Long standing nautical tradition dating back over 300 years has determined what the highest points of honor are - and they are not always the highest point in height. It would be disrespectful to the national ensign to fly it from somewhere other than the highest point of honor. The club burgee should be flown at the masthead and club officer or other flags are flown on halyards extending from the yardarm. And now… you KNOW!!
