I once was lost, but now am found Was blind but now I see

Can you place these words? Where they come from? I’m willing to bet that you’ve sung them more than a few times. They are from the hymn “Amazing Grace.” They have so much power and truth and well…grace!

Have you had any moments recently where your eyes were opened? Where you were “blind but now [you] see”? It seems to me that many of us have had so many opportunities for that possibility in the last few months. Times of difficulty, uncertainty, stress and possibly fear.

What inevitably happens in these types of moments that we all face at different points in life is that we have the possibility of having our “eyes opened.” We have our perspectives on life, faith, the world and God all challenged. That’s how the world works. That’s how God works.

We have hard things happen and we look to God. Or should I say we have the opportunity to look to God. It doesn’t always happen, let’s be honest. We can turn inward instead. We can become bitter, jaded, pessimistic, angry and less human about things. But in times like these, we have the opportunity to become bitter or better, even if it’s not always easy to choose the latter.

All of us can be blind can’t we? I don’t mean physically, of course, but more so the “blindness” of our hearts, minds and souls. We can have our hearts, minds and souls closed to the world, to others, to the needs of people, to goodness, to what is right and good…

That can happen in our lives, and even so when we gather together as God’s people we are reminded that we have another perspective on life… another way of “seeing” the world. And even when we are the opposite, even when we act like “wretches” we have been given a precious, amazing and free gift. We have been given grace from Jesus.

The beginning of the hymn is like this:

Amazing grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch; like me

We have done nothing to earn or receive the grace of God through Jesus. And yet…we are loved, forgiven and never alone.

So, what do you do with that truth? You wash your hands. You wear a mask. You social distance. You find ways of sharing and caring and loving others, especially those who in our society who are considered “the least of these.” You become better and not bitter. We share hope and love and for-giveness and our treasures and…grace.

We do this so that when people see us, they see the grace of the one who loves each and every one of us, Jesus Christ.

Church Attendance Sign Up

Peace church reopened for services, Sunday, June 21st, on a limited basis and with important health safety guide-lines, which will continue to evolve and be updated. Services are at 8 am & 9:20 am. In order to have the best worship experience and connection with God and each other at Peace, we will be shifting the Facebook Livestream to 10:30 am on Sunday mornings. We will still be having the sign-up for in-person worship for 8:00 and 9:20, but the 10:30 worship service will be utilized to be the best experience for those wishing to stay home yet.

Thank you for your feedback, support and grace as we try our best to maneuver these times!

For evening worship, we have Thursday night worship at 7:00 pm in the worship space. Thursday evening worship will include the same protocols and sign up as Sunday morning worship.

As always, we know you will take care for your own safety and the safety of others. If you are comfortable being present that’s wonderful. If the time is not yet right for you, we will continue our Live Facebook worship at 10:30 .

Steps the church is taking to have an engaging yet safe service for in-person attendees:

• Seating is limited to about 80 participants per service

• Families or co-worshipers are able to sit together in groups

• Groups must be seated six feet away from the next nearest group

• Only every third pew is open to ensure six feet “front to back” social distancing

• All worshipers are asked to wear masks (please bring your own)

• The nursery is not open (child-care will be unavailable)

• There will be no donuts or coffee (our sincerest apologies), and that space will be cordoned off

• There will be no hand-shaking or hymnals (the service will be shown on screen)

• There will be no children’s activity bags

• Services are about 45 minutes long, to allow time to disinfect / clean between services

Steps we’re asking all attendees to take to ensure a safe service:

• Please wear masks and abide by all of the social distancing guidelines, above

• Please stay home if you are not feeling well especially if you have a fever or symptoms concerning for respiratory illness

• Register yourself and each family member for an upcoming service in advance, via the church website (www.peacelc.org) or by phone (920.865.7595) so we can manage to keep attendance about 80 total attendees per service (for safety)

• Please use the main entrance only when entering or leaving church

As we transition to worshipping together, guidelines are such that we are limited to the number of worshippers we can seat in our worship space. To ensure we do not surpass the directed number of 80 per worship service, you are asked to sign up using SignUpGenius, if you are planning to worship in person at church. If you do not have access to the internet, please call the church office (920 865-7595) and church staff will sign you up for a worship date and time of your choice.

You can use any electronic device to sign up. The sign up link is active on our website (www.peacelc.org). The link will also be sent to anyone who is on our General Interest list for Constant Contacts emails. If you would like to be added to this list, please send an email to the church secretary, [email protected].

If you would like to help clean the worship space between services, volunteers can contact church administrator, [email protected] or call 865-7595.

Over time, with Covid-19 cases controlled and heading in a positive direction, it is our hope that attendance numbers can be increased. We thank everyone for their patience and collaboration at this time.

Causely July This July, we are partnered with H2OpenDoors to provide safe drinking water to people in need.

H2OpenDoors is a program of Rotary clubs around the world with the long term goal of providing access to clean, safe drinking water for one million people throughout developing nations. The team of volunteers at H2OpenDoors travel to areas of the world most in need of clean water and install a SunSpring water filtration system that will provide safe drinking water for 10,000 people every day for 10 years. Every check-in this month will provide 50 gallons of safe water to someone in need.

If you want to learn more about H2OPenDoors, you can check them out at www.h2opendoors.org. The hashtag this month is #givewater.

If you haven’t heard of Reach by Causely, here's how it works... Causely makes a donation to a great cause every time people check-in at our location. To learn more about Causely visit causely.com/our-good.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, if you are unable to get out and about to get groceries and essentials or are in need of a warm meal, there are several church volunteers available to help you get what you need. We will share the bread and the drink together as we remember, wherever we are, the gift of the Lord’s Supper. For those attending worship in-person communion will be celebrated together in a new and safe way.

Communion Sunday, July 5th

August 9th at 10:30 am during the Facebook Live worship we will celebrate with our 39 young people who will affirm their faith in Jesus Christ virtually.

We will not be physically present in the church building, but all of the confirmands will be present each in their own homes as we pray over them, bless them and as their parents do the "laying on of hands".

Sunday School Update ~Submitted by Laura Ruotsala

Yes, we are in the midst of summer, but now is the time to think (and pray) about helping with Sunday School in the upcoming school year. I do not know exactly what will happen or what changes will be made, but volunteers are

still needed to teach our young members about Jesus and their faith. In today’s world, we need to rely on our faith to get us through.

IS TEACHING OR HELPING WITH SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR YOU? INTERESTED, BUT UNSURE OF

WHAT IS EXPECTED OF YOU? NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!! Our Sunday School program is success-ful because of many wonderful volunteers. Yes, it can seem like a big commitment, but the payoff is remarkable when you see the children’s excitement to learn about Jesus and other Bible stories, interact with their classmates

and prepare for and participate in the Christmas Programs. We always have a need for teachers, helpers and substi-tutes, along with Steering Team members. The more the merrier and also less work for each person! Again, no ex-perience required!!

Teacher: Responsible for planning weekly lesson and activity (lessons and activity ideas are given to teachers each

week and corresponds with the weekly church sermon). We prefer to have at least two teachers per classroom. Co-

teachers can switch weeks so you are not responsible for planning each week.

Helper: Responsible for assisting teachers. This may include sitting with or helping a child that may be sad or pos-

sibly disruptive so the teacher can focus on the whole class. There is no planning involved for the helper. A great

opportunity for our older students (Grades 6+) to help.

Substitute: Most times a substitute is called to assist one of the main teachers when the other is gone. At times, a

sub may need to be the main teacher (the lesson material will be provided to help prepare for class).

Steering Team Member: Responsibilities include working with Pastors Stuart and Jim and other church personnel

in organizing teachers, helpers and substitutes; setting up the SS year with lessons, time off and ‘fun days’. Assist-

ing and supporting the teachers and parents as needed; organizing or assisting with special events throughout the

year; and whatever else is needed to help the SS program run smoothly.

If you are interested in teaching, helping, substituting or being a member of the Steering Team or just curious for

more information, please contact the church office or Laura Ruotsala ([email protected]). Thank you for con-

sidering helping us with Sunday School. Positions are open to ALL responsible persons.

Sorry to announce that Vacation Bible School is cancelled this year!

Back-TO-School Store The Service League of Green Bay will roll out their school store again this year by providing already filled back-packs to over 3,00 children in local middle and elementary schools. Next Meeting Katie’s Circle will meet on Tues-day, July 14th, at 1:00 pm outside at the home of Gloria and Harvey Jaeger (830 Catherine Drive, Green Bay). You may wear a mask if you are more comfortable and bring a lawn chair with you if you have one. There will be no food available. Please bring your water bottle with you.

We will discuss Session two “Just Love - In the community: From tree to we” found on pages 20 – 25 in the July/August Gather magazine. This session views the story of Zacchaeus through the lens of restorative justice. We will examine what it means to make amends for the harm we have caused and consider how Jesus invites us to reconnect to the communities from which we have been alienated.

Please plan to join us. It is wonderful to see each other face to face again and as always the discussion is wonderful. Along with that, we are usually blessed with beautiful weather! Be sure to check the August newsletter to see if we will be meeting in August – there’s a very good chance that we will!

Katie’s Circle welcomes everyone to join in fellowship and discussion with other Christian women. Monthly Bible studies are found in Gather Magazine. Learn more about Gather at www.gathermagzine.org.

The fall retreat for the East Central Synod

of Women of the ELCA has been cancelled.

Also, the WELCA triennial gathering that

was to meet in July 2020 has been rescheduled

to August 2021 (still in Phoenix, AZ).

Church Library As the church is now open, please feel free to drop off any of the library materials you may have found that belong

to the church library. The librarians will get the items returned to the shelves for others to enjoy.

DRIFTWOOD BAY by Irene Hannon is another Hope Harbor Novel. In this one, Jeannette Mason retreats to Hope

Harbor to create a new life. She creates a lavender farm and tearoom. Jeannette relies only on herself to keep

things running – including the weekend teas open to the public.

Dr. Logan West moves in next door with his young niece. Logan needs to find someone to care for his niece while

he is at work. His first option doesn’t work and he is pushed to find someone new. In addition, he has a new

puppy which he bought to help his niece heal. The puppy has a lot more energy than he bargained for.

The local churches sponsor a Syrian family which moves into town. Jeannette and Logan are both asked to attend

the welcome event for the family. As their needs become more known, Jeannette and Logan are pulled into helping

more and more. They both come to realize how much God has a hand in everything that happens.

This was another wonderful story from Irene Hannon. DRIFTWOOD BAY can be found in the fiction sections of

the library. Check it out and enjoy!

LWR School Kits Due to the pandemic, Katie’s Circle will not be collecting items for Lutheran World Relief (LWR) School Kits this summer. If you would like to make a donation, you may give your check (made out to Peace) to Deb Bohm and she will combine it with others and send to LWR or you may send a donation directly to LWR PO Box 17061 Baltimore, MD 21297.

From the Desk of Nurse Marsha

This month I would like to share with you two poems from a precious person, Minnie

Karchinski. She went to be with God several years ago, but her kind words with humor

and wisdom still ring in my ears as well as my heart when I read her poems. Minnie was

a member here at Peace Lutheran and volunteered her many talents of quilting, sewing

and hospitality. I had the pleasure of visiting her and praying with her. She gave me a

copy of her poetry book that she had written Behind The Milkhouse Doors.

In the world we live in, especially with Covid-19, human cruelty and racism, and oh so much more…who can we trust?

Can we trust CNN or Fox News or Facebook or even the medical experts? We CAN trust in our Lord and Savior, Jesus

Christ! Here are the 2 poems from Minnie that nearly jumped off the paper after I prayed to God which ones to share with

you:

DEAR GOD

It’s so difficult to remember

How much you love me.

When harsh words reach my ears

And when people I meet.

Seem so cold and unkind

As I deal with daily life.

Caught up in times of stress

And become frustrated with the task at hand.

Thoughts of you often escape me

A purpose to be here on earth.

But then I realize, God that these

Are exactly the times when I need you the most.

And at these times

I should seek your love and guidance.

Trust me to follow your directions

Just one at a time and to do the

Best that I can in all the plans

You have laid out to me.

Amen

PEACE OF MIND

They say man was created equal

I know from where we came

But how we all developed

There are none that is the same.

The body perfect comes in all sizes

Hair has many different shades

Eyes are always pretty

Whether seen on man or maids.

Personalities now there is a problem

Some are patient loving and kind

Others are rude and hurtful

Why can’t they be just like mine?

As loving and happy as I am

I suppose I too have a naughty side

But I wouldn’t hurt either man or fly

I would just brush them to the side.

If I could only influence them

To be considerate of all mankind

Then this would be a better world

So we could live with peace of mind”

Outside In ~Monthly commentary from Melissa Huber, Church Secretary

If you asked me what I do each night to relax, for a very long time my answer would be, “Oh, watch a little TV, check out my Facebook newsfeed.” I don’t find either of those things very relaxing anymore. I have been reading. The Brown County Library responded to COVID-19 by allowing book reservation and curbside pick-up. I appreciate it and have utilized the service to check out books for whole family.

Do you know where else you can get books for the whole family? The Peace Lutheran Library. The Peace Library has evolved quite a bit the last few years. For example, when I joined Peace, there was a corner of the library dominated by VHS tapes. Those tapes are gone and new books and media were added. Books, books on CD, music CDs and movies on disc are available to check out from our library.

Did I already mention there are books for the whole family? I just revisited the library to look at the space with new eyes. Honestly, my kids were merely toddlers the last time I visited our library for books. I focused on the children’s section, which is quite large and all-encompassing. There is a section that covers major church holidays – board books that tell the Christmas and Easter stories with lots of pictures and simple words. I remember borrowing a couple of them in December when my kids were tiny and reading them together. It doesn’t seem that long ago, but my oldest just finished reading a 400-page book, so it must have been at least 20 years ago.

But, seriously, my oldest is only 10. As I went through the library shelves again, my interest was piqued. There are at least four sets of book series for teens and tweens in the library. Books that combine action-adventure and fantasy along with Christian ideals. They look like extraordinary books. When my previously mentioned 10-year-old is done with Harry Potter, we have some options for his reading enjoyment right here in the Peace library.

There is an adult fiction section, and I’m checking out a book for myself. Books are easy to find, organized alphabetically by author last name. My favorite section of the library and the place I found my book of choice is the rack directly next to the door-- new books! Fresh covers and pages with that “new book” smell. The titles all sounded interesting, and that section is a mix of fiction and nonfiction.

There is a self-help section. I fell in love with that section during my first visits years ago. There are a lot of books on parenting and raising children. I checked out a few of those books with the best intentions of learning and mastering the art of parenting. I never had the energy to read those books and they came back unread. But there are extensive titles on a lot of other subjects that sound interesting to me today. This section covers parenting of teens, marriage, caring for older parents, dealing with death, issues in today’s world, forgiveness and substance-abuse issues – just to name a few.

Pastor Stuart was setting up a bit for Thursday service when he saw me coming out of the library. “Find anything interesting in there?” He continued to point out his favorite series, books he uses from our library shelves to help him craft his sermons from time to time. Written by William Barclay, they are commentary on each book of the New Testament. There are 17 volumes, and you are invited to check them out!

At this time, the library is closed on Sundays to ensure proper social distancing. You may visit the library during church office hours, 8 am to 2 pm Monday through Thursday and 8 am to noon Friday. If you attend worship on Sunday and want to return materials, you’re invited to drop them off in the church office.

Even if you’ve visited the church library, I challenge you to visit it again. Just reading the book titles and browsing the sections gave me inspiration and food for thought. “Dump Your Hang-Ups Without Dumping Them on Others” is a title that I’d love to share with the world at large. Another title that jumped off the shelf at me was, “When I Relax I Feel Guilty.” Absolutely. So, I am not alone in that feeling! I also feel guilty when I check out a book and don’t read it, so I am not ready to take that one home yet. I will close with a photo of a book I also won’t check out now, or ever. I think it should probably stay on the shelf:
