PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

July 2021

The RSC Annual

Member Appreciation Picnic

2021-22 Trip Kick-off

Was a Great Success!

Sorry I had to miss it…

Thank you, Nancy Tickle (Meetings Director), your committee and all

the volunteers who worked so hard to make this such a great successful

event. Sounds like combining the annual Trip Kick-off event was a

great idea as well as most of the trips are full or nearly full. With the

early cut-off dates and steeper penalties caused by COVID-19 this takes

a lot of the heat off our Trip Leaders!

Our Activity and Social Directors have been hard at work developing a

number of upcoming events for our members. Remember that any

member can host an event or a last minute “Meet-up” by emailing the

appropriate Director or VP of Activities.

Remember if you are interested in becoming an RSC Trip Leader and

want to learn the ropes by running RSC Weekend Trips or RSC Social

Events, like white water rafting, camping/biking weekends, etc. Reach

out to Valerie Chafee [email protected] for ski trips or Sandy

Vermillera [email protected] for non-ski trips. We need

to get some weekend ski trips on the calendar for sure! The RSC Board is looking for someone to intern for the News Director

position for 2022-23 by working with this year’s News Director to learn

the ropes. If interested please reach out to President Elect, Eddy Long

[email protected].

My door is always open for suggestions, concerns, etc.!

Keep Calm and RSC on!

On Saturday, June 12, 2021, more than 140

Richmond Ski Club members gathered for our

first membership event since the pandemic on

the banks of the James River at the American

Legion Post #354. It was wonderful to see so

many friends and smiles!! The event was all

decked out for a “Christmas in June” theme to celebrate the

holidays that we missed with each other and to look forward

to our 2021-22 winter ski trip season.

Ski Trip tables were set up close

to the river and became the

focal point after lunch was

served. Several new members

to the club were present and

were pleased to learn there was

such a large group of people

who love snow sports in RVA!

Extra special thanks to the American Legion Post for hosting us at this fabulous venue.

A raffle was being held to support the Legion and the Legion Commander presented

Eddy Long, President-Elect, with a token of appreciation gift to the Richmond Ski Club.

Many thanks to the picnic committee: Nancy Tickle, Sue Mullins, Valerie Chafee, Linda

Neal, Karen Noakes; Eddy Long, President-Elect, who provided our leadership for the

event in great style; and the many members who volunteered their time to ensure the

smooth operation of the event. Preparations, decorations, registration, drink pouring,

food serving, and cleanup. Special thanks to Bill Ramsey for providing music for us all!

On Sunday, June 20th, thirty eight Richmond Ski Club members and guests

gathered for our annual outing to King Family Vineyards in Crozet, VA to watch

Polo Matches (Ladies Challenge!!) while feasting on an amazing potluck lunch

and enjoying some of the best wine in Charlottesville. It was a fabulous day and

great to be able to socialize in a large gathering once again!! Cheers!!

The Last Supper (A Celebration of R.S.C. ski racing)

After a tenure stretching over six decades, the Richmond Ski Club's racing program has finally come to

an end. Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, we were one of only three ski clubs in the U.S. that met the

criteria of having over 1,000 members (Los Angeles and Atlanta being the other two). With these two

clubs as our only competitors in the NASTAR races, we often shined in downhill competition nationally

(in fact, we took home the top awards back in 1990). In addition, the R.S.C. had always held its own

in our annual match-ups with the other ski clubs in the Blue Ridge Ski Council. However, with the

waning interest in ski racing among our membership, it has lately become quite the challenge to have a

group of racers that are willing to regularly spend their winter weekends trekking around the mountains in

the Mid-Atlantic looking for that elusive gold medal or pin. This widespread lack of interest has been felt

elsewhere as well, which caused the B.R.S.C. to vote to suspend the ski races held each year on the

Western Carnival trips.

Within our own ski racing programs (the Presidents Cup, the James Jalbert Award and the Club Races),

participation numbers had dwindled to the point that sometimes no one would show up for a race. It

became so bad that during the 2020 season only one participant qualified for the two President Cup

trophies. Though it pained me greatly to do so, recommending to the R.S.C. board to end the season-long

racing programs was the right thing to do. The motion was seconded and was passed unanimously last

year. We might, however, revive the one-day-only Club Races at some time in the future, but that does

not require enough attention to justify having a person on the R.S.C. board with those as his or her sole

duties.

After serving as either Competition Director and Race Coordinator over most of the past 30 years, my last

official act was to send out an invitation to all of our aged downhillers for one last supper together. We

met after the conclusion of the ski season in April at the Country Club of Virginia to hand out trophies,

enjoy the great camaraderie, relive war stories, and to remember those legendary club racers who came

before us in promoting our sport. The names of folks like Jim Jalbert, Sam Ukrop, Meade Broaddus,

Grant Eddy, Bill Carneal, and Ed Estes will always be associated with RSC ski racing.

It has been an absolute pleasure serving the membership of the Richmond Ski Club as either trip leader or

assistant trip leader on over twenty excursions around the world in addition to my racing responsibilities.

Though I have now physically moved away from the Richmond area to the "Wilds of Giles (County)"

near Blacksburg, I will continue to ski with my fellow R.S.C. members both locally and on week-long

excursions around the world in the years to come. Hopefully I will meet up with many of you on the

slopes or maybe even a racecourse next season.

Thanks for the memories and THINK SNOW!!!

There are many types of policies from single trip to annual travel policies.

Some policies have limited cancellation reasons (work is generally not a valid reason to cancel) and some policies allow cancellation for any reason (these policies are generally more expensive)

There are many vendors offering policies, including online, through an insurance agent, or through a credit card used to purchase a trip. For any trip insurance you may wish to purchase, you must carefully read each policy

to fully understand exclusions and other limitations. Many policies may or may not be written specifically for COVID-19, but you need to understand all exclusions to your policy

Be aware of date restrictions on policy purchases. They may need to be purchased within a certain time period (often within 2 weeks) of signing up for a trip. “Sign up” dates may vary among carriers (i.e., date the deposit/

payment check is written, date check is deposited, credit card transaction date).

While the club will be looking at cancellation policies in upcoming contracts so that we are all protected, we also recommend you purchase Trip Insurance which can also help protect you in case of illness or injury prior to or on a trip.

Travel Insurance Considerations for Today’s COVID-19/Pandemic World

The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 is making long-term planning of any sort tricky, and Richmond Ski Club members who wish to sign up for an RSC Trip may have concerns and are wondering what Travel Insurance Option would work best during such unfamiliar times. Force Majeure clauses may be in affect as well, but how they relate to various circumstances will vary depending on the insurance carrier, so be sure to ask.

The Richmond Ski Club Board of Directors strongly suggests that each of its members who are considering an RSC trip do their own research to determine the best options for their own comfort and needs. Travel insurance policies are the most comprehensive option but are often difficult to navigate. The RSC Board cannot stress the importance of reading all the fine print to be sure you fully understand what each policy will and will not cover.

First, here's how travel insurance generally works. These policies are designed to cover "unforeseen losses incurred while traveling" and include a wide range of things, from lost luggage to the cost of meals and accommodations during an unexpected delay to additional medical expenses resulting from an on-trip injury or illness.

Trip cancellation is typically included in standard policies and reimburses 100% of a traveler's prepaid and non-refundable expenses—if the reason for cancellation is on the policy's approved list. The most common covered reasons are a trip participant’s illness (including COVID-19 illness), injury, or death of the traveler/traveling companion, or a family member. Reasons such as inclement weather, terrorism, and natural disasters may be included but check the fine print. Standard Policies must be purchased prior to final trip payment to tour operator.

Most policies will not cover any cancellation related to Covid-19. To be covered for trip cancellation, the impacting event must be listed in their insurance policy certificate. Viral outbreaks, pandemics, and epidemics aren’t typically listed within a standard policy. Cancelling because they one is too scared or concerned to travel won’t be covered.

A Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy may provide an exception. It really does mean for “nearly any reason” (other than fear of travel); i.e., my dog is sick, not liking the snow forecast, not getting along with traveling companion, etc. However, not all CFARs cover cancellation due to pandemic situations or COVID-19-related travel fears, so be sure you understand the reasons for cancelling that are listed in your insurance certificate!

CFARs have very strict rules on when the policy must be purchased or added to an existing policy and the date seems to vary between carriers. Most state that a policy must be purchased within 14 days of the date on your check or charge for initial trip payment. Other policies say 20 days, and still others say 24 hours. Be sure to do your research prior to making your first payment.

Generally, a "cancel for any reason" policy covers no more than 75% of the full cost your trip if cancellation reason is not explicitly listed as covered within your policy certificate (if reason is listed as allowable the 100% refund will apply). To cancel for any reason, you must cancel no later than 48 hours prior to trip departure date. CFAR policies typically cost about 40% more than a standard policy.

NOTE: “time is of the essence” if considering a CFAR policy – DON’T DELAY!

Travel Insurance Search Engines: www.sevencorners.com or www.squaremouth.com Other Options: Ask your Trip Leader – Most Tour Operators Offer Travel Insurance

Call Myra at Travel Protectors 1-703-443-9055

NOTE: ANY OPTIONS PROVIDED BY YOUR TRIP LEADER OR AS MENTIONED ABOVE ARE ONLY INTENDED TO SERVE AS A STARTING POINT FOR YOU TO BEGIN YOUR OWN RESEARCH! AND AS ALWAYS NOTED, TRIP INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL BUT

HIGHLY ENCOURAGED!

various places where one can take a single run on a snow cat to drop

you off in nearly untouched snow, all while being in bounds.

Advanced skiers can also experience Powder Country, where you ski

down to a bus stop that will drive you back up! Don’t worry, there are

plenty of groomed trails also.

We will be staying in Ogden UT, about 20 miles from the resort. We

will have a PRIVATE bus to take us to and from the mountain, but the

town bus is also an option if you want a shorter or slightly longer ski

day.. We will stay very convenient to the Historic District with many

restaurants ranging from budget to high end. Within walking distance

is the Salomon Center with indoor rock climbing, indoor skydive,

bowling, and a movie theater.
