Should mandates regarding group gatherings etc. change (i.e. limited group size,
masks required, etc) we may need to hold off on in-person meetings for a while
longer. We will keep you informed through Eblasts, so please check your email and
or the Website as we get closer to October to get the latest information. The Board

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
September 2021
Due to the Delta Variant
& Low % of the U.S.
Vaccinated Population,
COVID is on the rise!!!
We’ve all seen the news and updates on the current pandemic situation. With that being said, we want to make sure that our membership and especially our trip participants are as aware as they can be of what kind of travel and in-person mandates may be on the horizon.
What is a vaccine or other mandate? A mandate refers to imposing a consequence for any kind of mandate refusal. The consequence can be a fine or denial of access to a service, job, or venues like hotels, cruise ships, and sports events.
Many music and sports venues recently announced their respective mandates, requiring proof of vaccination and/or negative COVID tests to enter this type and many other types of events. We should anticipate seeing more and more of these!
Similar, if not more stringent mandates, will be implemented for air/train/bus/cruise travel and entry into resort destinations, etc. Tour Operators have stated that these may become very granular, meaning mandates for the resort destination could vary from what individual lodging facilities may require. Furthermore, the Travel Insurance Industry will be taking the stance, that regardless of purchase of travel insurance, they will not cover lost expenses due to traveler’s individual decisions not to comply with Federal, State or Local mandates. Check out the links below to stay updated on potential changes and your Trip Leaders will keep you up to date as well!
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and beliefs; however, keep in mind that travel mandates/restrictions are outside of our control. If you contracted to go on an RSC Trip and are not comfortable with the potential travel restrictions, please be sure to check with your Trip Leaders on the last date you can drop out without being penalized. NOTE: If that deadline passes and your leaders are not able to fill your space, you will be held liable for lost expenses!

IT’S BACK!!! THE ANNUAL STATE FAIR OF VIRGINIA AND OUR ANNUAL STATE FAIR BEER SERVING ADVENTURE
SAVE THE DATES! – September 24, 25, 26, 27 (Friday through Monday)
This is our NINTH year being involved in this project (this would have been the tenth if not for COVID!) – They are fortunate to have the “A-Team” for the opening four days of the Fair which can often be challenging and we certainly have the experience! Once again, the Richmond Ski Club and Parrothead Club of Richmond will be on it along with some support from the Friends of the Richmond Mounted Squad.
This year there will be just two locations: Harvest Landing (top of the hill) and Festival Trail (bottom of the hill, centrally located). The Concert Stage will return to the location to the right of the Farm Bureau Center exhibition building. Instead of “wine on tap,” they will be offering Copa de Vino (individual wine containers) and Tito’s w/lemonade along with craft and domestic beers. Here are the days/shifts and number of volunteers needed, if you can do multiple shifts that would be great!!!! Our goal is to have ample volunteers to provide breaks to enjoy the Fair and food.
Please contact Sue Mullins Ramsey with your availability at [email protected]
Friday 9/24 – (noon-4:30) 8 volunteers Friday 9/24 – (4:30-9:00) 10 volunteers
Saturday 9/25 – (noon-4:30) 10 volunteers Saturday 9/25 – (4:30-9:00) 12 volunteers Sunday 9/26 – (noon-4:30) 10 volunteers Sunday 9/26 – (4:30-9:00) 12 volunteers

On July 25th, 2021, Richmond Ski Club members and guests toured the exhibits at
the American Civil War Museum at Tredegar. Afterwards, RSC took a guided tour
of Brown’s Island where local stories of Richmond during the Civil War were
presented. Afterwards, a few went onward to Patio Thai to cap off the day.

On Sunday, August 22nd, twenty-seven Richmond Ski Club members and guests

breweries along the way to sample some of Richmond’s finest local beers.
Participants ended the day on the rooftop at the Hof Garden to celebrate their

There are many types of policies from single trip to annual travel policies.
Some policies have limited cancellation reasons (work is generally not a valid reason to cancel) and some policies allow cancellation for any reason (these policies are generally more expensive)
There are many vendors offering policies, including online, through an insurance agent, or through a credit card used to purchase a trip. For any trip insurance you may wish to purchase, you must carefully read each policy
to fully understand exclusions and other limitations. Many policies may or may not be written specifically for COVID-19, but you need to understand all exclusions to your policy
Be aware of date restrictions on policy purchases. They may need to be purchased within a certain time period (often within 2 weeks) of signing up for a trip. “Sign up” dates may vary among carriers (i.e., date the deposit/
payment check is written, date check is deposited, credit card transaction date).
While the club will be looking at cancellation policies in upcoming contracts so that we are all protected, we also recommend you purchase Trip Insurance which can also help protect you in case of illness or injury prior to or on a trip.

Travel Insurance Considerations for Today’s COVID-19/Pandemic World
The uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 is making long-term planning of any sort tricky, and Richmond Ski Club members who wish to sign up for an RSC Trip may have concerns and are wondering what Travel Insurance Option would work best during such unfamiliar times. Force Majeure clauses may be in affect as well, but how they relate to various circumstances will vary depending on the insurance carrier, so be sure to ask.
The Richmond Ski Club Board of Directors strongly suggests that each of its members who are considering an RSC trip do their own research to determine the best options for their own comfort and needs. Travel insurance policies are the most comprehensive option but are often difficult to navigate. The RSC Board cannot stress the importance of reading all the fine print to be sure you fully understand what each policy will and will not cover.
First, here's how travel insurance generally works. These policies are designed to cover "unforeseen losses incurred while traveling" and include a wide range of things, from lost luggage to the cost of meals and accommodations during an unexpected delay to additional medical expenses resulting from an on-trip injury or illness.
Trip cancellation is typically included in standard policies and reimburses 100% of a traveler's prepaid and non-refundable expenses—if the reason for cancellation is on the policy's approved list. The most common covered reasons are a trip participant’s illness (including COVID-19 illness), injury, or death of the traveler/traveling companion, or a family member. Reasons such as inclement weather, terrorism, and natural disasters may be included but check the fine print. Standard Policies must be purchased prior to final trip payment to tour operator.
Most policies will not cover any cancellation related to Covid-19. To be covered for trip cancellation, the impacting event must be listed in their insurance policy certificate. Viral outbreaks, pandemics, and epidemics aren’t typically listed within a standard policy. Cancelling because they one is too scared or concerned to travel won’t be covered.
A Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) policy may provide an exception. It really does mean for “nearly any reason” (other than fear of travel); i.e., my dog is sick, not liking the snow forecast, not getting along with traveling companion, etc. However, not all CFARs cover cancellation due to pandemic situations or COVID-19-related travel fears, so be sure you understand the reasons for cancelling that are listed in your insurance certificate!
CFARs have very strict rules on when the policy must be purchased or added to an existing policy and the date seems to vary between carriers. Most state that a policy must be purchased within 14 days of the date on your check or charge for initial trip payment. Other policies say 20 days, and still others say 24 hours. Be sure to do your research prior to making your first payment.
Generally, a "cancel for any reason" policy covers no more than 75% of the full cost your trip if cancellation reason is not explicitly listed as covered within your policy certificate (if reason is listed as allowable the 100% refund will apply). To cancel for any reason, you must cancel no later than 48 hours prior to trip departure date. CFAR policies typically cost about 40% more than a standard policy.
NOTE: “time is of the essence” if considering a CFAR policy – DON’T DELAY!
Travel Insurance Search Engines: www.sevencorners.com or www.squaremouth.com Other Options: Ask your Trip Leader – Most Tour Operators Offer Travel Insurance
Call Myra at Travel Protectors 1-703-443-9055
NOTE: ANY OPTIONS PROVIDED BY YOUR TRIP LEADER OR AS MENTIONED ABOVE ARE ONLY INTENDED TO SERVE AS A STARTING POINT FOR YOU TO BEGIN YOUR OWN RESEARCH! AND AS ALWAYS NOTED, TRIP INSURANCE IS OPTIONAL BUT
