On his Facebook page,Denton’s BoneDoggie spells it right
out: “Don’t wanna befamous … just local.”
So the long-haired, hat-wearing roots rocker toilsaway in Denton venues withnary a shred of self-promo-tion.
Bone Doggie and theHickory Street Hellraisersare on the bill for theDenton Stray PreventionBenefit at 9 p.m. Saturdayat Rubber Gloves RehearsalStudios, 411 E. Sycamore.Rubber Gloves owner JoshBaish has long been com-mitted to animal rescue andstray prevention, and theanimal lover stages at leastone benefit concert a year —often more.
Bone Doggie pairs hiswhiskey-soaked vocals withthe Irish bouzouki and achorus of tuneful noise fromhis Hellraisers, who backhim on brass, drums, guitarand bass. Bone Doggie spinsfolksy songs that rock. Intunes like “I Love Jesus,”Doggie rasps away to a
funky pub rock song thatreports, matter-of-factly, thenarrator’s present imperfec-tion. “A Bar in Texas” is amournful folk song thatbuilds on Doggie’s vocalsand the Hellraisers’ TimBurton-esque stylings. It’s astory-song animated by flir-tatious trombone, shufflingguitar and vivid verse.
Sounds like: BusterPoindexter and Tom Waitsmet up in a pub in CountyLongford, Ireland, andplayed to a downbeat house.
Also on the bill for thebenefit: Backwater Opera,Midnite Society andMarriage Material.

aniel Moon and Amanda
Austin were poring over
the books at Cardo’s Farm,
a longstanding stretch of
organic acreage in Ponder,
when Moon said the time
to have a festival at the
farm was ripe.
“In New York, they have this festival,” said
Moon, referring to Clearwater’s Great
Hudson River Revival. “I kept telling
Amanda we needed to do something like
that.” Moon, a native New Yorker and sus-
tainable farming enthusiast, now shares the
management of the Ponder farm with
Austin.
“He’s been saying, ‘We need to do a festi-
val. We need to have a festival,’” Austin said.
“We were looking at the farm’s finances for
the fall and Dan said, ‘We need to do the fes-
tival right now.’”
That’s how Cardo’s Vegetable Festival was
born. Austin said that as soon as they floated
the idea of the event among their volunteers,
friends and peers in the sustainable food
movement, the offers to plan came rolling in.
Chris Oller, founder of Peace Kitchen,
agreed to whip up some food using crops
from the Cardo’s plots. Additional food and
drinks will be served by Denton Juice Co.,
The Chestnut Tree and others. At least one
vendor will serve kabusecha, a mellow
Japanese green tea. Sellers from the Denton
Community Market will participate, and the
owners of the sustainable Krum dairy
MoonRyvRanch plan to be there, too.
Denton’s Gutterth Productions has put
together a concert featuring a local lineup:
Burnt Sienna Trio, Dust Congress and Glen
Farris.
The festival, along with a Kickstarter.com
campaign, will raise money that Austin and
Moon say will expand the farm from an
operation cultivating about a third of an acre
to about one acre. The campaign will also
help outfit a barn for informational work-
shops.
“This is an experiment,” Moon said. “We
want to grow more food. We want to feed
more people. But we also want to be able to
earn a living as farmers.”
By making the transition from a small
sprout farm to a small, community-support-
ed agriculture project, Austin said Cardo’s is
joining a growing movement to reconnect
urban and suburban consumers to their food
sources, and a recommitment to cultivating
those foods using organic methods. If you
bite into the bright red stem of a Cardo’s
rainbow chard leaf, you’re eating produce
that has been tended and harvested without
pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizer.

“We want to be an educa-tional model for sustainableagriculture,” Austin said.“This is a movement that isgrowing. There are communi-ty-supported farms across thecountry, and people are inter-ested in knowing where theirfood comes from.”
Moon and Austin met inNew York last year. Austinhad just graduated from theUniversity of North Texaswith a bachelor’s degree indrawing and painting, andmoved to New York for aninternship. Moon, who stud-ied agriculture, said Austinkept mentioning the Ponderfarm.
“I’d always had this land onmy mind,” Austin said. “Ibelieved it was valuable. Icame back to Denton fromNew York in November. When Dan came throughtown, I told him he had tocome out and check out thefarm. It evolved, you know?Cardo [landowner Rick Orn-doff] needed a caretaker forthe animals and delivery forthe sprouts.”
Austin got the caretakingjob, and Moon soon followed. As they started to work theland and tend the chickens, ducks, guinea hens and twoJersey cows, Austin said theystarted dreaming about thefarm’s future.
“We have so many ideas,”Austin said. “Each week, we’dbe talking and it would be:‘We could do this, or we coulddo this.’ There’s almost no end
to what we could do.”They have crops planted in
several plots, and sproutseedlings growing in modifiedshipping containers. Austinand Moon have planted a neworchard — peaches, plums, pears, persimmons and apri-cot trees — and have tilled anew field that is ready forplanting.
The farm could serve a hostof needs. Cardo’s alreadyoffers affordable classes andworkshops for adults and chil-dren, though Austin hopes thechildren’s garden flourishes. From growing to canning andcooking, Cardo’s could be justthe ticket for Denton-arearesidents who want to join thelocal food movement butaren’t sure how to start.
“Hopefully, this place willbe a resource for space and forinformation,” Austin said.
The most important role forthe farm will always be out-reach. The New York farmwhere the managers workedhad a partnership withCornell University. Highschool students near the farmearned a paycheck fromCornell for picking up pro-duce and then distributing itin low-income areas.
“It’s not just about growinga vegetable today, it’s alsoabout food security and build-ing more resilient infrastruc-ture for our food supply,”
Moon said. The vegetable festival is a
celebration of those ideas, bigand small, that invite localresidents to help grow andharvest a local, organic foodsource. They can already sam-ple some of the crops atrestaurants such as Hannah’soff the Square or theCupboard, or drink a shot ofwheatgrass juice at JupiterHouse. During the festival, vendors will have their booths
between the farming plots, and the musicians will play ona stage between the livingquarters and the greenhouse.
“We just want people tocome out and have food, drinks and just enjoy them-selves,” Austin said. “We justwant everyone to have fun.”

THE EVOLUTION OF A FARMCardo’s Farm Project grew out of Cardo’s Sprout Farm, a modestexpanse of acreage in Ponder where Rick “Cardo” Orndoff has grownand sold wheatgrass to the Cupboard Natural Foods and Cafe andJupiter House and Jupiter House Europa coffee shops for years, takingback thousands of pounds of discarded coffee grounds to compost. The sprout farm is no longer. The farm is there and still cultivatingsprouts, eggs and vegetables, but farm managers Amanda Austin andDan Moon are working to expand it, grow more food and become anofficial member of the community-supported agriculture (CSA) move-ment in Denton. That means area residents would invest in a “share” ofthe farm, and in return pick up a weekly supply of fresh produce.Cardo’s Farm Project has launched a fundraising campaign onKickstarter.com. Just search for “Cardo’s.”

Universal Studios Olivia Wilde, background, plays the elusive traveler Ella and Daniel Craig is a stranger with no memory of his past in
Cowboys and Aliens.
Genre bending Craig ably leadsstory of strangersin an alien land
By Boo AllenFilm Critic
The best thing about thenew Cowboys and Aliensis that, despite its mirth-
provoking title, it takes itselfseriously. It never winks orsmirks at the fact that it usestwo vastly different movie gen-res and treats them, if not withrespect, at least sincerely.
Director Jon Favreau, whohas somehow segued fromeccentric character actor to thego-to director for big-budgetaction movies (Iron Man, IronMan 2), again succeeds in tack-ling a project that could easilyhave gone awry. He uses thescreenplay from a quintet ofwriters to fashion an enjoyable, almost believable, mixture —that is, as believable as a moviecan be that deals with inter-galactic warfare.
The title more or less revealsall in its story of intense cowboyJake Lonergan (Daniel Craig)who wakes up somewhere on the1873 Arizona range not knowingwho he is or where he is. And hewears a strange metallic bracelethe cannot remove.
From there, Cowboys andAliens seems to follow Westernformula, however briefly, asLonergan wanders into town, has several scuffles and isthrown into jail. He only leaveswhen the town’s attacked by a
squadron of flying machinesthat discharges explosiveswhile also roping townspeopleand whisking them away.
Lonergan joins forces withcrusty local land baron ColonelDolarhyde (Harrison Ford), asthe two embark on a JohnFord-worthy odyssey. They linkwith an Apache tribe and thenwith Lonergan’s former outlawgang. And of course, a beautifulwoman (Olivia Wilde) with herown mysteries figures in.
The film unfortunately falterswhen the disparate group grap-ples with monsters that looklike many other science-fictionmovie creations — sort of anAlien/Starship Troopers blend. But even these familiar beastscan deliver frights and scareswhen they pop up unexpectedlyor are thrown in our faces.
Favreau lets cinematograph-
er Matthew Libatique bathemany of his scenes in perplex-ing darkness, whether at night,in a saloon, in an office or in thecaverns of the spaceship. HarryGregson Williams provides amusical score that, when it canbe heard over the roaring din, ably complements the constantaction.
Craig makes a convincingcowboy, while Ford seems toenjoy chewing vast amounts ofsagebrush scenery.
But the grand supportingcast of Sam Rockwell, PaulDano, Keith Carradine, ClancyBrown, Abigail Spencer andothers goes almost unnoticed, which seems natural in a filmwith so many other distrac-tions.
