2021 Summer Festival: the journey back | 3

From theExecutive Director

Dear Friends:

Throughout history, global pandemics have shaped society, culture, and institutions. As we find ourselves exiting the

COVID-19 crisis, one pandemic and subsequent recovery that comes to mind is the bubonic plague—or Black Death—which devastated Europe and Asia in the 14th century. There was a silver lining, however, as it’s believed that the socio-economic impacts of the Plague on European society—particularly in Italy—helped create the conditions necessary for what is arguably the greatest post-pandemic recovery of all time—the Renaissance.

Though our 2021 Summer Festival is not what was initially envisioned, we are thrilled to return to in-person programming for the first time in 24 months. For the first time ever, all in- person performances will be broadcast live via Kahilu.TV. The Journey Back celebrates HPAF’s gradual and long-awaited return. Though each of our challenges are not yet distant memories, we at HPAF are committed to upholding our mission: to promote the appreciation and advancement of classical music and musical theatre,

to offer a world-class training and performance program, to improve education, and to elevate the spirit of all who participate.

We are delighted to begin our season with Stars of Tomorrow, featuring many successful young alumni of our Young Singer Program—including Becca Barrett, Stacee Firestone, and many others. Under the direction of both Beth Dunnington and Val Underwood, this performance will celebrate the art of storytelling in its most simple and elegant state. The season also includes performances by many of our very own, long-time Festival favorites, and two of Broadway’s finest, including HPAF Alumna and 1st Place Winner of the 2020 HPAF Musical Theatre Competition, Nyla Watson (Wicked, The Color Purple).

As we enter the recovery phase and many of us eagerly await a return to “normal,” let’s remember one thing: we are not normal—we are extraordinary. This is our time, our recovery—this is our Renaissance.

With aloha,

Justin John Moniz, Executive Director
