Jesus was unable to perform miracles in Nazareth because the people had no faith in His capabilities. While we may see this as a failure on Jesus’ part, remember that God does not force any human to submit to His will. When we act on the Lord’s behalf, we should not expect everyone we encounter to react positively to our efforts to open their hearts and minds to the Word of the Lord. For that reason, we too cannot demand or cajole others to follow Christ as this only tends to belittle the promise of salvation. The Lord wants each us to make the independent decision to come into His Kingdom. We must be like Jesus, virtuous in our actions, showing that as we live by the grace of God, we will achieve the happiness and peace found heaven.

In the Gospel today, Jesus’ family also question His sanity when they hear of Him teaching in the synagogue. His family, who knew Jesus from His youth and only from a human aspect, rejected the possibility that He was capable of speaking the Words of God and perform miracles through the power of God. Jesus knew that His mission was to establish a new covenant with the children of God. No human judgment would keep Jesus from acting on behalf of God. Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Bernadette and many other saints defied, parents, other family members, and even the public to speak out about the Kingdom of God and follow a religious life. They listen to God’s call instead of the expectations of their families.

Many saints struggled with their relatives in their choice to follow a religious life rather than the expectations of their families. In the early 1200s, Saint Francis angered his cloth merchant father by selling a bolt of cloth and giving the money to a priest for the repair of the church of San Damiano. Forced to give the money back, Francis went a step further returning the clothes he was wearing to his father. Standing naked in the town square before his father and the community, Francis renounced his inheritance and took up a vow of poverty and offered his life in the service of the Lord. Although dying at the age of 44, Francis founded the men’s Order of Franciscans and the women’s Order of Poor Clare's.

Other saints suffered from the disbelief and abuse because they willingly pronounced the Lord’s message to the world. Between February and July of 1858, Saint Bernadette Soubirous witnessed on seventeen different occasions the Marian apparition in the grotto of southern France that today we know of as Our Lady of Lourdes. Bernadette’s parents beat her because they thought she was lying. Punishing for making up stories, they also prevented Bernadette from returning the grotto for some time. Only after continued pressure from the community, Bernadette’s parents permitted her to return to the site where she had seen the lady wearing a white veil and a blue girdle. The Lady, who eventually identified herself as the Immaculate Conception, instructed Bernadette to tell disbelieving priests to build a chapel at the grotto. Bernadette became a Sister of Charity before she died at the age of 35.

Have you considered that the Lord is calling you to become a saint? You may be thinking that I am not anything like Francis or Bernadette. Nor are you meant to be those saints. Instead in purposefully following the will of God in your unique daily life, He will provide you with the particular kind holiness necessary to be a saint.

All that is necessary to be a saint is to want to be one. Don’t you believe God will make you what he created you to be, if you consent to let him do it? All you have to do is desire it. (from Thomas Merton’s Seven Story Mountain)

May the Lord bless all His saints living and dead.

This Week’s Readings

OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[hard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Put the brakes on back talk

A child’s habit of making snide comments, indulging in disdainful sneers, muttering under her breath may seem harmless now but a snippy attitude hampers the growth of skills in communication, conflict-

resolution, and empathy. Talking back will have to be unlearned to become an effective adult. Why not put the brakes on back talk as soon as it

starts? Be selective about TV or

video viewing. Programs on network television or video sites often create exaggerated characters to enhance the comic factor. A regular diet of rude but funny characters gives children the idea that rudeness and disrespect is entertaining.

Stop it when it starts. Laugh at a wisecrack from a precocious three-year-old and you may be sorry when he makes similar remarks at ten.

Don’t fight when you have already won. Some children see an adult’s firm “no” as “let’s negotiate.” Don’t get drawn in. State your rule with a reasonable explanation, repeat if necessary, then visibly and obviously move on. No need to fight a battle you have already won.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mark 6:4-6a

On the Way to Mass: What is one message from God I could bring to friends or family this week by what I say or do? On the Way Home From Mass: Is there anywhere I lack faith and could be more open to good works? Whose good advise am I not listening to? Living the Word: Make a list of good deeds (mighty or small) that as a family you would like to accomplish for people you already know this week. There is always need within our own walls and from the people we love. Does Grandma need to be her yard mowed? Is a brother or sister struggling with a project? What help does the mother or father need? Do these deeds without expecting appreciation.
