The distinction theyreceived was presented on be-half of the International Presi-dent of the Lions Club inrecognition for their excep-tional work during the year2010 – 2011. that Master Plan - that set ofblueprints for a green Aruba. That Master Plan must containall the necessary legislation, and I can imagine that this kindof endeavor would require agreat deal of laws to make itwork. These laws cannot becreated as we go along, as ap-pears to be the case right now.For the best kind of synergythose laws must be carefullydesigned as a composite andall-encompassing coverage ofevery aspect of every angle ofthe process, from idea to im-plementation to fruition.

II. Best Practice: Curacao:We can take example from

our sister island, Curacao. They have created an interes -ting slogan…”We don’t talkgreen…we do green.” Whilewe are not acting on Aruba, weare steadily falling behind.

The only green we havethus far is the Wind Park atVader Piet with a delivery of amere 12% of electricity. Byfailing to have a Master Plan inwhich ELMAR N.V. is given amandate to propose and/or ad-vice on legislation to formallyregulate the installation ofsolar panels, the governmenthas the fiat to create their ownphilosophy and managementagainst solar energy. And, as aresult, ELMAR has no choicebut to follow suit and concurwith the government! It is sim-ply unexplainable that for anisland with the very best pro-duction of free sun for 11hours per day 7 days per weekfor almost 365 days per yearthat there are practically nosolar panel installations any-where!

Green Aruba! Such a MasterPlan must include every con-ceivable aspect relative to al-ternative energy: where we aretoday with respect to WEBN.V.’s operations, indebted-ness, potential for alternativeenergy expansion and/or ab-sorption, its manpower pooland future investment portfo-lio, and its current philosophyrelative to alternative energyand fossil fuel management, what are the power needs ofAruba today, tomorrow andinto the future, best practicescenario for alternative energysources and applications, etc.,etc. This Master Plan must dothe very same for ELMARN.V.

The most cardinal questionthat must be addressed relativeto ELMAR is “after alternativeenergy what will be the wayforward for ELMAR N.V.?” AMaster Plan will delineate theanswers to that question.

A Master Plan for a GreenAruba is the only foundationupon which the island can goforward intelligently and cost-effectively. Unquestionably, without such a plan, we areonly spinning our tops in mudand will blunder, falter andcause financial havoc in thelong run. We cannot help butcompare the process with thatof building a nice home.

Without an architect’s de-tailed blueprint in which everybeam, joist and supportingwall is meticulously measuredfor exact size and carrying ca-pacity and a solid foundation ispoured to pre-determined di-mensions, you cannot build asustainable house.

Likewise, we need first andforemost to sit down and draft

By any standard Aruba’s ap-parent efforts to go green isvery commendable. Much hasbeen done in terms of the pub-licity of our green vision andnoble intentions. I think, it issafe to say that the entire worldis aware of Aruba’s vision andintentions. Every world leaderknows that Aruba is intent oncreating a so-called green cor-ridor and on significantly re-ducing our dependence onfossil fuels. However, what theworld does not know is that weare far from crystallizing thatvision, from taking those in-evitable concrete steps to makea green Aruba a reality.

In my humble view, bring-ing TNO to Aruba may be anexcellent step in the right di-rection, but it is not one of theinevitable concrete steps nee -ded to realize the vision of agreen island. Setting up solarpanels on the beautifully reno-vated homes in San Nicolas isan excellent step in helping toreduce the electric bills ofsome of the people who mostneed that kind of helping hand. But, again, in my view, that isnot one of the inevitable con-crete steps needed to create agreen Aruba. Nor is the estab-lishment of a solar park on theparking lot of the Airport!

I. Basis: Master PlanMy research and extensive

information on the subjectmatter convinces me that inorder for Aruba to in fact andin reality go green, Aruba mustfirst and foremost, after exten-sive research and consultationwith true experts not interestedin making a buck, design anelaborate, complete and tho -rough MASTER Plan for a

ceed3. To simply ignore the

peaceful, objective and well-founded objection of the peo-ple is non-democratic, legallyrisky and dumb founded of in-telligent leaders

4. To ignore the myriadof advice and counsel fromDutch and American expertiseis simply irresponsible

5. The inability to trulyjustify the exuberant financialcost of such a product againstwhat it will produce (10%)does not warrant continuingwith it at any location

6. To press forward withthe project, as if unwitting, inthe face of the high risk ofjeopardizing our indispensabletourism industry is downrightstupidity

7. To ignore the historic, spiritual implications, scenicvalue and environmental con-sequences of building un-sightly noise producing towersin such an area is totally irre-sponsible.

Hence, I can conclude thatthe Aruban community, cer-tainly those in the know whoare not politically motivated orhave political agendas andwho only want to very best forthe island, hereby beseechesthe decision makers to seri-ously weigh all the evidencecarefully and objectively andto concur that a wind turbinespark at Urirama appears to notbe a good idea for Aruba. Wewant alternative energy, by allmeans, but it must not be at theexpense of everything wedeem precious on Aruba!

If this was helpful, I wouldlove to hear from you: [email protected].

those many jobs of fellow citi-zens who depend on Valero fortheir livelihood. I also recog-nize that we cannot blameValero for operating as theydo. They are operating withinthe confines of the completeabsence of environmental le -gislation. Save Valero by allmeans, but at the same, beginnow to enact strict legislationto protect the environment andinclude this in your delibera-tions and bargaining for thenext operator of Valero. Thevision for a green Aruba mustbe consistent and all-inclusive,if not we are completely “ver-keerd bezig” as we say inDutch, meaning, truly actinginappropriately.

IV. Beseeching Reconsidera-tion:

As we review the concretereasons for not proceedingwith a second wind park atUrirama, the reasons begin tostack up high. In a nutshellhere they are:

1. In the absence of anEnergy Master Plan for Arubait simply cannot be justified

2. In the absence of a vi-able, independent, objective, professional evaluation of thehealth implications of windturbines in a populated area, makes it irresponsible to pro-

And, what’s more, we are cur-rently defending, tooth andnail, the project for placingmore wind turbines and notsolar panels. The focus appearsto be on the wind and not thesun despite all the already re-searched and declared adverseeffects for wind turbines.

In Curacao they alreadyhave practical legislation inplace, also for the businessworld. This obviously will con-tribute to Curacao becominggreener much sooner and willboost their economy. Appar-ently, WEB N.V. does not wanta second wind park, but has nochoice but to follow the gov-ernment’s lead. Urirama is es-timated to cost Arubasomewhere close to $140 mil-lion dollars for 10% extra windenergy. Vader Piet is currentlyproducing 12% of the energyneeded. WEB may refuse 25%of the Urirama energy if this isnot in balance with their energybalance. If this is the case, thenwe are looking at an energyproduction of no more than10% from Urirama. Togetherwith Vader Piet we can think ofa maximum of 22% and not40% as is being promoted. Thiswill then translate into almostno reduction at WEB of theCo2 output! At the momentCuracao is way ahead of Arubaand by December they willjump ahead another 20%.

III. before Petro China orWhoever:

To my surprise, what no-body is talking about is what Iperceive to be a major irony.

We are working diligently tointroduce alternative energy andto make Aruba a green islandwithout giving any considera-tion to the oil refinery. The oilrefinery as it stands today ismiles away from any semblanceof green. The dreadfully harm-ful emissions from the oil refin-ery permeate the atmospherepractically on a daily basis cov-ering almost the entire SanNicolas airspace kietenbos areawhere some of the smoke headsout to sea. In none of the discus-sions regarding the sale/take-over/ of Valero have I heard anydiscussion regarding remedyingthe pollution factor of the refin-ery. Hence, in one breath we areabout to doll out more millionsof dollars than have alreadybeen spent on wind turbines andon creating a green corridor allin an effort to reduce Co2 and tocreate a healthy clean environ-ment for our citizens. And, onthe other hand, we are workingovertime to save the ever pollut-ing refinery.

Please don’t misunderstandme, and don’t accuse me of notwanting to save Valero. Ab-solutely not, I too want to save

CALIFORNIA (AFP) - Socialnetworking giant Facebookplans to engage in a new typeof mobile advertising based onthe apps used by consumers,The Wall Street Journal re-ported Saturday on its website.

The social network, whichhas 900 million users, woulduse its Facebook Connect fea-ture -- which lets millions loginto applications using theirFacebook ID and password --to track consumers' apps, andtailor ads accordingly, it said.

Facebook -- which isbased in Menlo Park, Califor-nia -- may also attempt totrack how people use theapps, but a final decision hasnot been made, the newspa-per said, quoting unnamedsources familiar with thecompany's plans.

The plan is likely to stokeprivacy fears, as the initiativewould go further than currentmobile-ad networks, whichtrack ads viewed by con-sumers on their mobilephone's web browser, the re-port said.

One of the biggest chal-lenges Facebook must con-front is its difficulties ingenerating revenues fromsmartphones, with more andmore users accessing the socialnetworks from mobile devices.

That factor led analysts todowngrade their forecasts forthe group before its stock mar-ket debut in May, which endedup being less than a success.

At that time, Facebookshares were offered at $38.Shares closed Friday at$31.73.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Ascorching heatwave searingthe United States was expectedto begin to ease slightly yester-day, but authorities warnedthat temperatures will still re-main high and dangerousthrough most this week.

The heatwave was responsi-ble for at least 36 weather-re-lated deaths in various parts ofthe country, The New YorkTimes reported.

Temperatures as high as 99degrees Fahrenheit (37.2 Cel-sius) were forecast for theWashington metropolitan areafor Sunday, a notch cooler thanthe 105 degrees (40.5 Celsius)recorded on Saturday, but stillvery hot and dangerous, espe-cially for the elderly and peo-ple with heart conditions.

However, blistering temper-

atures were expected to cool"significantly" by today as acold front pushed south fromCanada to the central and east-ern United States, the NationalWeather Service said.

The breather will likely beaccompanied by fierce storms, forecasters warned, possiblyspelling disaster for states stillrecovering from a killer bandof thunderstorms that wreakedhavoc last week, leaving mil-lions without air conditioningor refrigeration after powercuts.

Meteorologists blame thesweltering weather on a hugeheat dome over large swathesof the country. High-pressureair in the domes blocks coolingwinds, setting hot tempera-tures, higher humidity andvery little breeze underneath.

LONDON (AFP) - Serena Williams has warned her rivals that her emotional fifth Wimbledon

title will act as a springboard for even greater glory as she aims to make up for the worst

period of her life. Just two years ago Serena should have been on top of the world after win-

ning Wimbledon for the fourth time, but instead the American was at her lowest ebb after a

series of freak health problems left her battling for her life. The trouble started when she

needed 18 stitches and then surgery after stepping on broken glass in a Munich restaurant.

But, showing the ferocious will-power that marked her rise to prominence, Williams gradu-

ally battled back to full health and capped a remarkable revival on Saturday with a 6-1, 5-7,

6-2 victory over Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska in the Wimbledon final. Serena's 14th Grand

Slam crown underlined her credentials as the sport's pre-eminent force and, at an age when

many players are entering the twilight of their career, the 30-year-old has no intention of

resting on her laurels. Serena has now equalled sister Venus's tally of five Wimbledon titles

and the next All England Club legend in her sights is Bille Jean King, who won the tourna-

ment six times, with the chance to catch German great Steffi Graf on seven titles another

motivation. If Serena continues serving with the kind of sustained accuracy and power she

showed at Wimbledon -- the world number four eventually finished with 102 aces after hitting

17 against Radwanska -- her dream of dominating women's tennis again could well come

true. And if she ever has cause to doubt herself during a match, there is no question what

memory will spur her on to greater heights. Photo shows Serena admiring her fifth Wim-

bledon singles trophy.
