other manufacturing groups in the state of Washington.

The only program in the state exclusive to local manufacturers, the GVCC Retro program has been helping Chamber members save money on their Labor and Industries (L&I) premiums since its start in 1988. With refunds averaging 31.69%, the GVCC Retro program has been recognized by the Washington Department of Labor & Industries as “one of the best performing groups in the state.” One of the reasons our program has been so successful is because of the work of our local administrator, Scott Croucher. At the Chamber, we are always interested in hearing from you – our members – as to how we can best support your efforts. For this very reason, we regularly poll our members asking for their feedback. In our most recent survey, members listed Marketing, Government Relations, and Sales as their top priorities. Members ranked the Chamber’s Public Affairs and Networking as the most valuable services included in their membership. When asked what professional development tools and/or seminar topics would be most helpful to their businesses, members listed Marketing, Social Media, and Public Relations.

First let me say how honored I am to be the Chair-elect of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce! I have been involved with the Chamber through the Public Affairs Committee for a few years now, and I have found

the Chamber to be the organization in which I want to invest my time.

There are a number of reasons I feel this way. First, I believe the Chamber is an effective organization, capable of making a difference in South-west Washington. GVCC continually serves its members well through its policy advocacy at the local and state levels, its promotion of special events, and in supporting the growth and success of local businesses. Second, I personally feel that this is a very critical time in our community – a time in which our individual contributions can make tangible differences for the region. The need for each of us to promote and support our community has never been greater. We have many great public and elected leaders, but that does not relieve each of us from our individ-ual obligation to lead when called upon to make our own contribution. I have complete faith that, together, we can pull ourselves up from this recession, while also making SW Washington a highly desirable place to do business, raise our children, innovate, and grow to become a model community. I hope, with your help, to make my time in leadership at the Chamber effective in promoting these essential building blocks of a thriving economy.

That is why one of the issues I am most passionate about is the Columbia River Crossing (CRC). This project is forecast to be in excess of $3 billion, and that forecasted $3 billion will be spent in our own front yard! The project will generate 20,000+ jobs over the projected 11-year time span. Like others who promote a healthy economy for our region, I support projects that spend $3 billion in our community and create jobs.

I also openly support light rail and bus rapid transit. Vancouver is on the cusp of blooming into a true urban city, and robust public transit

There’s a new book out that you probably won’t see at your local bookstore, but we have a copy here at GVCC. It’s a good read and it reflects a great vision for our future region. The Columbia River Economic Develop-

ment Council (CREDC) has published a report that outlines how we can move our economy forward into a bright future.

The authors – TIP Strategies of Austin, Texas – spent seven months researching the data and interviewing Clark County leaders. The report concludes that the post-recession economy looks very different than the past, and that investing solely in the traditional sectors of construc-tion, manufacturing, and retail will leave us vulnerable to a boom-and-bust economy.

Moving forward, TIP Strategies is asking Clark County to take bold steps to transform the region’s economy from today’s boom-and-bust model to one promising sustainable, steady growth. Some of the identified strategies include: attracting and growing companies and talent in industries such as software development, solar man-ufacturing and heavy industry; enhancing higher education’s participation in economic development by collaborating with Washington State University-Vancouver to develop a research park to incubate new business; and working more diligently to build the infrastructure needed to attract new business and keep existing businesses in Clark County. These are just some of the report’s recommended goals.

However, goals are only as effective as the leaders that implement them. The municipalities, ports, educational institutions and businesses will execute various pieces of the plan. For this plan to work, collaboration at all levels is key.

During the first week of June, Clark College President Bob Knight, his

son Scott, my daughter Emma, and I had the good fortune to join the Flight of Friendship trip to Japan. Organized by Azumano Travel and Mercy Corps, the Flight of Friendship was the first large American tour group to travel to Japan since the March 11th earthquake and tsunami. This group of 80 people traveled to Japan with two goals: To jumpstart and promote tourism to the country, and to do some relief work in the areas devastated by the disaster. We spent our first evening and full-day in Tokyo before traveling to the Miyagi prefecture for two days. Upon arrival in Tokyo, we were greeted with an extremely warm welcome from the US Ambassador to Japan, the top naval attaché and the head of USAID in Japan. After a briefing on the conditions in the affected areas, we toured the Fuji Television headquarters and enjoyed a traditional Bento lunch with Fuji’s President. Later that evening we visited the Asakusa Kannon & Nakamise shop-ping arcade and dined at a Japanese steak house, heading back to the hotel for a good night’s rest before traveling to Sendai the next day.

Immediately after arriving in Sendai, we proceeded to Sendai TV. The company’s President and senior management gave

us a warm reception and further briefed us on the devastation that struck the region, preparing us for our volunteer efforts.

We spent two days in the region, helping people who needed food, water, and clothing. During our time in and around Sendai, signs of major damage from the earthquake alone were not readily apparent and the signs we did see were primarily cosmetic in nature. But the same could not be said for those areas hit by the tsunami. Buildings in these areas experienced significant water damage at the very least, and those hit directly by tidal surges were totally destroyed.

Japan is a country the size of California with a population of 128 million. The earthquake and tsunami killed over 13,000 people, leaving over 15,000 miss-ing and over 154,000 living in evacuation centers to this day. 90% of the deaths were due to the tsunami. Over 217,000 buildings were damaged or destroyed during these twin events. And, yet, despite the complete destruction and widespread displacement, despite the loss and horror from the disaster, the spirit and character of the Japanese people, and their forward-looking optimism, could not have been more inspiring or admirable.

Throughout the entirety of our trip, without exception, everyone we met was courteous, enthusiastic and gracious. Even those folks we met in community centers were engaging and would optimistically share their stories of steps made toward regaining ele-ments of their lives prior to the disasters. Everywhere we looked, we saw full recovery activity.

Participating in the Flight of Friendship group trip was the experience of a life-time. But it was the spirit of the Japanese people and their undying optimism and faith in rebuilding that I will remember most. There are many lessons that we can learn from their courage and their active pursuit of recovery. n

Our members have spoken, and we hear them loud and clear! Within the next few months, we’ll launch a new website for those inter-ested in starting a company or growing their business. GVCC has been working with local partners to create a user-friendly website providing answers to all your business related queries from marketing and public relations, to budgeting and contracting. As always, we will be interested in getting your feedback on this benefit.

In response to members’ emphasis on Public Affairs and Government Relations, we will be inviting individual legislators to lunch at the Chamber. Members in attendance will have the opportunity to talk with our elected officials in a casual, personal manner at these brown-bag luncheons. Look for details in August and September.

Finally, as new rules and programs are slowly coming into view, we will be looking for ways to clearly present the changing options

in healthcare. This is one area where we’re all trying to see the horizon on the pending changes, and we hope that GVCC‘s leadership in providing you with information regarding these changes will be helpful to our member businesses.

As proud as we are of the 90% satisfaction rate members reported in the survey, it is the Chamber’s daily mission to evolve and adapt to better serve our members. Thank you to everyone for providing feedback that will help improve GVCC. As always, we value your membership. n

is essential to that evolution. I know there are some that don’t want our community to change, but we must continue to change if we are to thrive. The federal government will pay for the construction of light rail, and is asking us to cover the operating costs. I think a transportation project that will improve mobility across the river and help the region grow and prosper is a good investment.

I grew up in Battle Ground, and have been a life-long resident in this community ever since. My wife and I settled here to raise our three children. I want them to have choices – choices to go to school in the area, and find the job of their dreams here, too. I want them to thrive here as I have had the opportunity to do. That’s why I see the Chamber as such a valuable and effective resource. GVCC is full of passionate people, leaders in the com-munity, working to support this community. Woody’s Custom Landscaping, Inc. was established in 1990 in Washington by

James “Woody” Woodhead. Woodhead’s interest in landscaping goes back to his childhood when he used to build extrava-gant landscapes for his model trainsets.

nKelly Parker, President and CEO of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, recently joined the Children’s Center Board of Directors. The nine-member board is the policy-making body

of the Children’s Center, which provides and advocates for quality mental health services to children and families of Clark County.

nIdentity Clark County (ICC) Board of Directors selected Paul Montague as its new executive direc-tor. Paul replaces Ginger Metcalf who announced her retirement in May after leading the organiza-tion since its inception 18

years ago. The former Membership Sales Executive at GVCC, Paul is a longtime community leader and volunteer. We’ll miss Paul here at GVCC, but we could not be happier for this exciting new chapter in his career – Congratulations, Paul!

nMatthew Bisturis, an associate in the Vancouver office of the regional law firm Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt, was recently elected president of The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Vancouver

and Clark County. The Parks Foundation’s mission is to raise funds through public and private partnerships in support of the parks, trails and recreation programs of Clark County in order to inspire kids of all ages to connect with nature. It accomplish-es its mission by creating and nurturing innovative partnerships, administering strategic grants and establishing special funds to enhance recreational opportuni-ties of the local area.
