CEO Chat: Library Gardens Cicero said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.”

In my two months as CEO of the library, I have had many library users wish me well in my new job. I really appreciate the kind words and support. Some have commented that it would be nice to do something with the gardens outside. Some have even offered to help.

Our very dedicated and caring staff recently participated in a suggestion scavenger hunt. They came up with hundreds of ways that we can improve both our services and the building itself. We are working through the list, so you can look forward to a few changes in the months ahead.

Many staff made suggestions for improving the library grounds. The Carnegie building is so beautiful. We need to better showcase the grounds with benches and reading areas and gardens. If we make the building more aesthetically pleasing, then we encourage people to visit.

Libraries and all municipal services are strained as we try to balance user needs with the reality that the funds necessary are not available from local taxes. In the budgeting process, renovating the elevator has to be a higher priority than landscaping needs.

Looking out the library windows, I wonder what can be done. I remember the generous offers of assistance. Perhaps some of the people in our community would like to help? Perhaps this is an interest of yours? Perhaps you know someone that can help? Maybe we have some wonderful patrons who, in the spirit of Andrew Carnegie, want to assist with some of the financial costs?

It seems like a great conversation to start. If I’ve caught your attention, send me an email or give me a call or drop-in. Let’s talk. With enough community interest, we can move ahead. We are excited about the possibilities.

Happy gardening and reading - Tim

Oh, so Beautiful! by Helen House This Cecropia Moth was sitting on my car, just sunning itself, as I was about to drive away. It was an awesome moment! A neighour moved it to a shrub, then it flew into the pine trees. It was the size of a bird.

The Cecropia Moth is native to North America. Females can have a wingspan of 6 inches ( 160 mm). The larvae of these moths are found on maple trees, but could feed on cherry or birch trees as well.

Their antennae are very feathery, and their claws, large and colourful, as well as their beautiful wings. An amazing sight to see!

Check out the Butterfly and Moth display at the Library.

The Lowdown on the Lift After over 30 years of service the Library’s elevator is getting an overhaul.

You may have noticed the elevator out of service for a day or two earlier this spring when some preliminary work was performed. Now the real job has begun and the elevator will be out of service for a few weeks.

The Library has a hydraulic elevator, which uses a piston buried in the ground to lift and lower the elevator car. Most of the work being performed on the elevator deals with the lifting mechanism and the lower structure. A new piston and cylinder sleeve are being installed. The piston had to be cut into three pieces to remove it, and the sleeve had to be jacked-up using four twenty-ton jacks. It took two days to lift the sleeve six inches (15 cm). That’s when they called the heavy equipment in.

Once the new sleeve and piston are installed new pit steel, which is the structural framework at the bottom of the shaft, will be replaced. Other work includes a new control system and a sump pump to keep the bottom of the elevator shaft dry and prolong the life of the new mechanism. When all of the structural work is complete, the elevator will receive a completely new, modern interior.

The final stage in the elevator’s upgrades will be a certification from the Technical Standards & Safety Authority of Ontario. Then the elevator will be reopened to the public, ready for another 30-plus years of service.

Working on the elevator (L to R): Preparing to remove the piston; the cylinder sleeve being jacked-up; components for the new sleeve ready to be installed; the really big drill to auger out the hole.
