Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

Greetings to all our communities and organisations in the Gisborne region.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become Involved

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

The next training weekend is on 30th and 31st August 2014.

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

Greetings to all our communities and organisations in the Gisborne region.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

The next training weekend is on 30th and 31st August 2014.

Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

Greetings to all our communities and organisations in the Gisborne region.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

Greetings to all our communities and organisations in the Gisborne region.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

The next training weekend is on 30th and 31st August 2014.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

The next training weekend is on 30th and 31st August 2014.

Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF is an Anglican social service which provides peer support programmes for

children and young people who are missing someone important from their daily life. This could be

through the death or major illness of a loved one, divorce or separation of their parents, imprisonment

of a family member or other major change in family life.

GROWING THROUGH GRIEF uses the widely recognised Seasons™ programme to support children and

young people who are grieving.

Seasons™ is a child-centred and activity based programme. The sessions may include stories,

artwork, music and games to suit each age group.

The Seasons™ programme respects all cultural and spiritual beliefs, providing an opportunity to

explore and express experiences with others in a safe and confidential environment.

Seasons™ groups are available for children aged from 5 years old and for young people up to 18

years old.

Adults may also have the opportunity to participate in their own group, while the children attend

theirs.

Programmes run after school for an hour a week for nine weeks, during the school term.

A koha is appreciated to help cover costs.

Seasons™ provides a place for each child or young person to tell their story, to be heard and sup-

ported, as the group explore together the natural and ever-changing seasons of grief.

Become a Seasons™ Companion.

Good at listening? Enjoy working with children? Training is offered to suitable people who may like to

become volunteer facilitators, working with small groups of children as Seasons™ Companions.

The next training weekend is on 30th and 31st August 2014.

Volunteer News Growing Vitality in a Volunteering Community

The Recipients of the 2014 Gisborne Youth Awards

In the newsletters the first half of this year I have been mainly focussing on the recruitment of volun-

teers we have looked at codes of practice ,responsibilities and identifying need, realistic volunteer posi-

tions and expectations. All of these we at the volunteer centre can assist organisations with.

But did you know we can also support the volunteer managers/ coordinators of our registered organisa-

tions. We have a variety of resources to share, policies, templates and connections with many “things

and people” volunteering.

I also really enjoy getting out of the office and visiting organisations and services not only does this con-

nect me more with each registered organisation by seeing both the volunteers and service users (where

applicable) in action,but gives me a chance to chat with volunteer managers about the volunteer pro-

gramme, address any issues and support them with identifying ways to manage any challenges.

Because we work with so many local organisations it is possible to Link managers up with others who are

experiencing similar issues. I am also available should Managers wish to have some personal mentoring

time, this can be done in or out of the work environment casual or formal.

So please feel free to get in touch should you wish to catch up with me and don’t forget volunteer man-

agers meet once a month at the Poverty Bay Café for a catch up, coffee and support networking.

Team Building Ideas

You may have seen some of the team building coffee

break teasers that I have been running on our Face-

book page .”Just for fun” activities are a great team

building resource especially if your team member’s

work shifts, different days or share areas. In the colder

months we all seem to spend more time inside and of-

ten the place you sit and share morning tea can be

cramped and dingy.

Allowing the “just for fun” to be available all week enables all to take part and can create unity

within the group, is great for mixing new and longer serving team members and the subject

matter can be for all ages. It is not expensive, takes little time to set up and can be great fun for

the team. If you want to be competitive you could challenge teams or departments too.

All that is required is a small white board or scrap paper which can been pinned up and all

sorts of “quests” can take place!

Here are a few suggestions.

Words made out of a key theme word, you could use your organisation name, special relevant

words to your organisation, important days or local events.

Hang man--- Anagrams-----Cross words-----word search----Quiz questions---Brain teasers

Many of these can be found on line to create so you don’t have to be a whizz at making up

questions.

Another option if you have the space would be a jigsaw puzzle, many op shops have puzzles for

sale or you could offer to complete one which requires checking before the puzzle can be sold.

Your team is then also collectively helping another organisation and is linking you and the op

shop teams.

Police Vetting Changes

Changes to the New Zealand Police Vetting Service has been happening over the last six months

and will continue to be developed and implemented during 2014-2015.

Police vetting allows organisations to check the background of potential and existing workers to

influence further decisions. The service helps to keep most vulnerable members of society safe.

Changes include a new combined form for requests and consents which should be available

soon on the Police website Everybody using the vetting service will be required to sign up to a

new agreement in order to continue to access the Service. If you’re already registered you’ll get

a copy of the new Agreement for signing soon. There’s also to be a new service which will offer

Australian criminal history checks

The Vetting Service will communicate changes and improvements as they are implemented. For

Greetings to all our communities and organisations in the Gisborne region.

Tairāwhiti Community Voice (TCV) is the new name for the organisation previously known as Gisborne East Coast Council of Social Services (GISCOSS).

The reason for changing our name was to better ex-press what we want the organisation to be and do – we want to include more than just social and health services and we want to provide an opportunity for groups, organisations and communities to have a col-lective voice to express our aspirations and concerns. Many voices expressing the same thing are usually more effective than a single voice.

The TCV vision is that communities, organisations and groups of people across Tairawhiti have a strong voice to influence positive change. We need your in-put so that together we can make Gisborne a healthi-er, happier and more connected place to live.

In addition to advocacy, research and training activi-ties, we provide a network of member organisations and groups who gather monthly to share information, raise concerns, make plans and provide support. Net-work meetings are held on the second Monday of every month at the BNZ Partnership Building, First Floor, Customhouse St starting at 12.30pm.
