JULY MISSION: STEWPOT COMMUNITY SERVICES During July we are collecting items that will help a variety of ministries offered by Stewpot Community Services. You can help by adding these items to your shopping during the week and bringing them with you to church. Collection bins are out to collect your donations If you want someone else to do the shopping, feel free to add the note "Stewpot" to a donation envelope or check and we'll shop for you. We will always accept non-perishable food items for the food pantry and feeding ministries, but this month, we want to broaden our focus to aid these other portions of their mission: Children's Ministries-After School Program & Summer Camp School supplies (pencils, paper, glue sticks, crayons, etc.) Sports balls for outside play. Drawstring bags Homeless Shelters- For men, women, & families Hygiene items for men & women (soap, toothpaste, deo- dorant, shampoo, etc.) Socks in various sizes for men, women, & children. Opportunity Center (daytime shelter & resource center) Towels Laundry detergent REQUEST REMINDER: CAN YOU HELP? With volunteers from St. Luke’s, we're hoping to help Stew- pot redevelop space in the renovated old Central Presbyter- ian Church for storage, distribution, and client interviews. If you know an architect, electrician, AC/heating specialist, etc. who could volunteer to assist us in mapping out this pro- cess, please contact them, and help make this happen. FONDREN’S FIRST THURSDAY A HUGE SUCCESS! FFT is always fun and rewarding. We have the opportunity to greet neighbors, with smiles that convey our Christian love for each one. Thanks so much to everyone who was pre- sent to lend a hand watching over the Bouncy House or to offer bottled water or lemonade to those who strolled by. In the past, we served up to 3 of the 5-gallon coolers of lemon- ade, but intense heat and a big crowd caused us to give away over 22 gallons. The bottled water ran out before 7:15, so we plan to have an extra case for August. If you haven’t tried being on hand for this outreach event, think about helping next month. You’ll be glad you did! Dear Friends,

I hope that you are planning to join us on Sunday, July 31,

for our summer Church Potluck immediately following wor-

ship in the Fellowship Hall. The church will provide chicken,

ham, bread and beverages. You can bring your favorite side

dish, casserole, salad or dessert.

Even though it’s summer, we haven’t slowed down the mis-

sions here at St. Luke’s. In fact, things are picking up! During

the month of July we are lifting up the ministries of Stewpot

Community Center. We’re collecting items like towels, twin

bed sheets, shower shoes and personal grooming and hygiene

items for the shelters; and school supplies for the after school

and summer camp programs. And, we are in the planning stages

of renovating a space on their main campus for an expanded

Food Pantry. I’m really excited about this!

We are also continuing our long-standing partnership with other

United Methodist churches in Habitat for Humanity. While it is

short notice, an opportunity has arisen for us to begin renova-

tions of a house on August 6th. St. Luke’s has also pledged to

raise $3,000.00 toward the project. There will be signup sheets

on Sunday, or contact the church office. Financial donations can

be made out to St. Luke’s, marked “Habitat,” or donated online

through the church website.

Finally, our Honduras Mission Team is having a great week!

They arrived safely and are hard at work. They will return home

July 17, and we look forward to them sharing their report in an

upcoming worship service.

Our St. Luke’s mission team pictured at the airport ready to board their flight to Honduras. Please lift them up in prayer knowing that God is with them on their travels, and as they offer their gifts of service assisting our Hon-duran brothers and sisters in building a place for Chris-tian worship, fellowship, learning and nurturing. The team will return home this Sunday night, July 17.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD Christmas?! Yes, Christmas plans and preparations are already in the works. St. Luke’s UMW Circle 4 is sponsoring the children’s shoebox gift ministry again this year, and will again include decorated water bottles repurposed

from empty plastic bottles. Circle 4 needs your donations of empty sports water bottles, quart-size milk/half-and-half, or similar plastic bottles, already decorated or plain. Shoeboxes will be available beginning in September and through October; so start collecting your shoebox items now! Contact Vicki Emfinger or the church if you wish more information.

UNITED METHODIST BUILD

2016

ST. LUKE’S WORK DAY – SATURDAY, AUGUST 6th We're looking ahead a few weeks to the Habitat for Humani-ty Methodist Build. Working with other area Methodist churches, we will be rehabilitating a home behind Baptist Hospital on Manship Street. We have volunteered once again to help them begin the project, helping to tear out the old in order to prepare for the total renovation of this 4 bed 2 bath home. Our start date is August 6, and we will be seeking vol-unteers willing to help in two shifts (morning and after-noon) as well as folks to provide snacks, sandwiches, and drinks for the work teams. There will be work for volunteers of all skill levels. So, look for the sign-up sheets this Sunday, or contact Mike Gaby to volunteer. This year, we have set a goal of $3,000.00 to help with construction costs. Donations may be made to St. Luke’s, noted “Habitat.”

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY It's that time again! We are looking for Sunday school volun-teers for the coming school year. If you are interested in vol-unteering to teach the preschoolers, school-aged children, or to help with children's church (during service), please email [email protected]. Volunteers work for a period of three months, so it's very flexible!
