“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will

of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of

prophets, but test everything…”

-1 Thessalonians 5:16-20

In light of the ruling that came down last month regarding marriage eligibility in Pennsyl-

vania, some of you may be wondering what the impact of that ruling will be on Shenkel

UCC. The answer is… that will be up to you!

During July, three dates have been reserved for conversation and dialogue around the topic

of same-sex marriage:

Tuesday, July 1 at 7:00 pm

Friday, July 18th at 10:00 am, and

Sunday, July 27th, following 9:30 worship.

These sessions are designed to be safe places to ask questions, share your viewpoint, and to

listen to each other’s joy, concerns, and/or uncertainty. There will be no decisions made or

conclusions reached at these gatherings, but we will enter each session prayerfully and hum-

bly, trusting that God’s Spirit will help us learn from each other, and to discern what next

steps we need to take.

I hope you will make time to join me and other members of Consistory at one or more of

these sessions.

Be God’s,

Pastor Bonnie

ADMINISTRATIVE NEWS…. PAGE 5

DO YOU HAVE NEWS

FOR THE BULLETIN OR

THE NEWSLETTER?

Just a reminder that all bulletin

announcements should be at the

church office by each Tuesday at

noon to be included in that week’s

bulletin. Newsletter articles for

the September Newsletter must be submitted by August

15th to be included in that issue.

RECYCLING REMINDER….

We still accept aluminum cans at

the church for recycling. Please

continue to recycle your plastic

bottles and other recyclables at

home.

SAVE-A-TAPE

PROGRAM

This is the easiest way to

help our church financially.

Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card at the customer service

spot at your local Redner’s store. Show your card at the

register when you check out, then bring your register

tapes to church and deposit them in the box in the Nar-

thex. These tapes are collected routinely, presented to

the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of your

total purchase to the church.

Be careful to bring your tapes in

regularly instead of saving them

at home, as they do expire if not

redeemed within a certain time

period. Also, please return the

entire register tape. Redner’s

will not accept any register re-

ceipt that has any part of it re-

moved.

Regional

Youth

Event

Update!

Thanks to everyone who supported the car wash

and bake sale fundraisers, and to a surprise do-

nation from the Community Lunch Bunch’s

auction proceeds. TJ Augustine, Olivia and

Cameron Duschanko, Ben Mocarski, Samantha

Pennell, Morgan Scharneck, Kaleena Sweinhart

and Angeline Viti and Pastor Bonnie are regis-

tered and ready to head off to the Mid-Atlantic

Regional Youth Event, “All Pieces Matter,”

July 9-14 at Susquehanna University in Selins-

grove, Pennsylvania! Please keep us in your

prayers, and join us for worship on July 27th

when we’ll be sharing some of our experiences

during worship!

Who is God Calling Shenkel UCC to Do and

Be?

On June 8th, those who were pre-

sent at the all-church summit did

a great job with the first steps of

creating a “provocative purpose

statement” for Shenkel UCC. Our

ultimate goal is to have a state-

ment that describes our church at its very best – a best we

have known in the past, remember in the present, and will

know more deeply in the future, as it stretches and challenges

us to become more fully the church God is calling us to be. A

clear, compelling, and memorable purpose statement will be

helpful as a touchstone as we make decisions about our mis-

sion and ministry in the future. A huge thank-you goes out to

everyone who participated in the discernment process on June

8th!

A follow up letter describing the process in detail and including

the first draft of the statement has been sent out to all mem-

bers of Shenkel UCC for review and feedback. Please contact

the church office if you did not receive your letter!

Introducing… Osmond Mbaeri! While Pastor Bonnie is attending the Regional Youth Event with Shenkel’s youth, Os-mond Mbaeri will be filling the pulpit on July 13th. Here is a bio from Osmond to help you get to know him better:

I was born in Salisbury, North Carolina. My parents are from Nigeria, West Africa. I grew up in Nigeria, from the age of 2 years up until 15yrs; I was brought up in a Nigerian village. My parent decided to go back to Nigeria after they finished their studies in America in 1983. They had to go back to take care of their 6 children that they left behind in Nigeria before they traveled to the U.S. Nigeria is one of the wealthiest countries in the world; however, mismanagement of her wealth and natural resources combined with corruption of governmental officials has caused her to be a poor country. There are many Nigerians today in diasporas. I grew up in a big religious family with 8 siblings. My father was a Methodist pastor and my mother was a social worker. My entire family migrated to the America November 22 1996. My educational background is as follows: I attended West Philadelphia High School and graduated in June 1999. I attended college at Widener University Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated with a BA in Criminal Justice in 2004. I joined the U.S Army as an officer after college. The Army ROTC scholar-ship financed my college education. I served four years in the Army with a tour of duty in Afghanistan. I attained the rank of Captain, in the Military Police Corps. I separated from the military in 2008 due to God’s calling in my life to part take in His ministry. I am currently enrolled at Palmer Theological Seminary in the Masters in Divinity program. I am a member of the Sharon Baptist Church of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. My pastor is the Bishop. Keith W. Reed Sr. I hope to graduate from Palmer Theological Seminary in May of 2015. I am married to my lovely wife Jeanine Carter-Mbaeri. We have a three year old daughter, Joy Amarachi Mbaeri. I give thanks and praise to God for all His wonderful blessings which he has bestowed upon me and my family. My prayer is that God will continue to rule and reign in my life as well as in the lives of all who believe in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen!

We look forward to welcoming Osmond back to Shenkel UCC!

B.I.T.E! APPEAL UPDATE

We did it!!!! Actually, we did it before

June ended – that is, eliminated the Cur-

rent Fund deficit! Thanks to the second-mile giving of

many people, the $19,963 albatross has been chased out

of town. And, there’s even a little surplus available in

case God challenges us in the future in a way we didn’t

budget for! The final figure will be shared in early

July when we thank God for inspiring the generosity

that enabled the B.I.T.E! Appeal to be so successful.

Thanks again to everyone who participated – every

contribution (we even received gifts from some chil-

dren and youth!) made a difference. Praise God!

HOLY COMMUNION

Shenkel UCC celebrates the sacrament of Holy Communion at both services on the first Sunday of

each month. Each time communion is served, some of the bread and non-alcoholic wine that has

been consecrated at the altar will be saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go to the homes or

hospital rooms of members who were unable to be present, and would like to receive the sacrament.

Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or someone you know, would appreciate “distance-

communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

Healing

prayers are

offered on the

third Sunday

of each month

at worship.

The Prayer Chain list is continually be-

ing updated. Request for prayers should

be placed in the prayer box in the Nar-

thex, or get in touch with any member of

the Wholeness Committee. If anyone

has a special prayer request, or is inter-

ested in ministering on the Prayer

Chain, please contact Freda Wan-

ner. Prayer requests will be carried for

one month.

Members of the Wholeness Committee

are Ann Baccari, Ted Gray, Tootie and

Louise Hine, June Hartung, Carol

Stubbe and Freda Wanner.

Flours” is a collection of pantry items or a monetary donation of your dis-

cretion to the Cluster. If a cash donation to the Cluster is made, a wheat

arrangement will be placed on the altar. Altar flowers are $30.00 and bul-

letin dedications are $6.50. Food Sculptures are also gladly accepted.

You can also dedicate a Choir Anthem with a donation of $30. With ever-

increasing costs of choral music, this sponsorship will help stretch our

budget and continue to bring quality music to Shenkel. Dedicate your an-

them to someone special, an event in your life, or just to the fact that you

love music. Thank you for this needed contribution to Shenkel. Blue en-

velopes are in the Narthex for your sponsorships.

There are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication during this and

the upcoming months. Please complete one of the special flower/bulletin/

anthem envelopes below the sign-up chart, enclose your payment, and either

put it in the collection plate or in the Secretary’s box by the office door. You

should sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date

after you have completed your envelope.

Worship in the

Moonlight

“The light shines in the

darkness, and the dark-

ness did not overcome

it.”

- John 1:5

A full moon will rise at 7:45 pm on

Sunday, August 10, 2014. Join us at

that time at the pavilion for a peaceful

and hope-filled moonlight service of

worship and labyrinth walk (weather

permitting.)

God’s Precious Children August 10, 2014

Have you been wondering how Pastor Deb’s trip to

Liberia in January went? On Sunday, August 10, she

and her husband Gary will be at Shenkel to tell us

first hand, and to deliver letters that children we

sponsored may have written to us! That day you will

have an opportunity to continue your child’s sponsorship if you would like

to, and there will be new students available for anyone who would like to

sponsor and was not able to do so last year.

As Gary wrote in his April update to us, “Always remember the reason.

The benefit from our efforts paying tuition would be temporal and futile if

it was not for the fact that we explain to each student and family that it is

the love of Jesus Christ that motivates sponsors to pay their school tui-

tion; and that Jesus loves them and has a plan for their life. Praise

God!.”

Please visit www.godspreciouschildren.com if you want to know before

before August 10th

VACATION ASSIGNMENT….

Will you be heading to an ocean, lake or other

body of water any time this summer? If so,

please collect a small amount of water (no

more than a couple of ounces) and label it

with your name, the date it was collected, and

where it was collected.

Keep it in a safe place – we’ll be doing some-

thing special will all our water samples in Sep-

tember!

Summer Camp 2014 At New Goshenhoppen Park

Offering children and youth a place to en-

joy the outdoors and learn about God's

Love. Experience God’s world with our

outdoor day and overnight camping oppor-

tunities!

In addition to 2 weeks of Kids Day Camp, we’re offer-

ing new programs that include themed weeks for chil-

dren and teens, Grandparents Weekend, and a Bicycle

Camp led by Reverend Allen Kramer-Moyer. Our

camps are open to all area children, youth, and adults!

You can visit New Goshenhoppen’s website at

www.newgoshucc.org and follow the link for camping to

see details and rates for the different camp programs. And

as always, Shenkel will reimburse campers from Shenkel

50% of the registration fee from our Campership Fund.

Cemetery Help Needed! Do you enjoy working with Microsoft Access or Excel? Can you offer a couple hours per month to

help keep our cemetery records current? This ministry can be done in your home in your PJ’s –

and it will be really appreciated by our Cemetery Superintendent, Jeff Luckenbach.

We’re also looking for some people willing to be trained as Jeff’s back-ups to help people locate

graves, and to mark plots for burials and headstones. This job is usually only performed 6-8 times

a year, but it is often needed to be done on short notice. If we have a team of people trained to

help, no one person will need to be always “on call.”

Finally, we could use a couple of folks willing to do “touch up” work in the cemetery – leveling sunken graves, and occa-

sionally planting grass seed.

Please contact Pastor Bonnie if you might be interested in any of these ministries. Thanks!

STEWARD’S

CORNER

Our favorite church mouse is on vaca-

tion. I wonder if he went to church

camp? You could, too. See the options

open to you at the bottom of this page.

CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES

With the closing of Mensch Mill,

the Penn Central Conference,

United Church of Christ, has gra-

ciously offered us the program at

Hartman Center Camp, Conference and Retreat

Center as a way to keep lifting up the importance

of outdoor ministry for us here at Shenkel. The

Hartman Center offers weekly camping sessions

from June 15th through August 2nd with a vari-

ety of specialty camps. Please visit

www.hartmancenter.com to check it out. Bro-

chures and registration forms are available at the

church office. And as always, Shenkel will reim-

burse campers from Shenkel 50% of the registra-

tion fee from our Campership Fund.

Shenkel Sunday School Program Needs YOU….

Although the 2014-2015 Sunday School program doesn’t begin for three months, I am hoping that the energy

and excitement of our youngest members participating in our closing program on June 1 will spark a continued

interest (for many) or a new interest in being part of this amazing program begun by our former Sunday School

superintendent, Julie Zachesky.

We need volunteers (adults and teens) who will teach and/or help teach students from 1st through 6th grades.

This would only require a commitment of teaching two Sundays in any one unit. For any person who would be

willing to volunteer in the Little Lambs room (for children 3 through kindergarten), this would be a commitment of

only four weeks for one unit.

At our summit meeting on June 8, the youth of our church ranked among one of the top five things loved about

our church. Would you please consider sharing your talents with one of Shenkel’s

most valued assets?

At this point, the grid for next year is empty. You can call (610-741-6949) or e-

mail me ([email protected]) directly and have a clean slate of dates and sub-

jects to pick from.

I will also have the grid available for sign-up once we begin our outdoor services.

Thank you!

Linda Foss,

2014--15 Sunday School Superintendent

Spring Meeting May 31, 2014

It was a beautiful day for a ride in the country to Zion Blue Mountain UCC in Strausstown. Pastor Bonnie, Tootie Hine

and Lynne Moyer were Shenkel’s delegates. Our morning session was “Vibrant Ministry when Money is Low and

People are scarce.” We heard from 3 churches about how they found new members, what they did to further their

missions. Grace Christian Fellowship, in Philadelphia, went door to door in their neighborhood, held a prayer walk

and prayed on street corners and had a drive thru prayer request site, this resulted in 147 new members.

St James UCC in Havertown had a food pantry and asked for food offerings on communion days. They had people

donate birthday bags that included cake mix, icing, balloons, paper products and small gifts for the pantry to hand

out. They offered another church their overflow from Easter and that church offered them baked goods in return.

They also put Prayer Shawls in their pews for people who wanted to feel closer to God.

We were introduced to Rev. William Worley and learned from him what he thought he could bring to our conference

if he were elected to be our Conference Minister. After lunch, in an overwhelming vote, Rev. William Paul Worley

was elected as the Conference Minister and President of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United

Church of Christ .

Rev. Worley is a person of deep faith, called as a disciple of Jesus the Christ, who understands leadership as taught by

Jesus, and serves God and God's people. He was ordained UCC in 1994, and has served the First Reformed Church UCC

in Lancaster PA since January 2000. He served the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marines and Marine Air Group 49 from June 2000

to May 2013.

Rev. Worley seems like a no-nonsense type of guy who will be able to bring change to our Conference and hopefully get

us back on track and move us forward to do God’s work.

NOTES FROM THE

MUSIC DIRECTOR

I would like to put together an “instant choir” for

the service’s special music on July 27th. We will

rehearse a new piece that morning from 8:00-9:30,

which the choir will then sing for the service. Any

adults who are currently members of the Chancel Choir or are interested

in joining the Chancel Choir in the fall are welcome to attend. It will be a

great morning of music making and fellowship (and breakfast snacks will be

provided!) If you would like to join the “instant choir” on 7/27, please let

me know: [email protected].

While next fall seems far away, I wanted to get

the word out now: the Chancel Choir will be

starting up next year on September 4, 2014 (the

Thursday after Labor Day). Rehearsals will be

held on Thursday evenings at 7:30 in the sanctuary at Shenkel UCC. All

are welcome (and encouraged) to attend. No previous choral experience is

necessary; if you are enthusiastic about making a joyful noise to the Lord,

then we would love to see you there. Come out and see what the Chancel

Choir has in store for this coming year—and bring a friend!

On Sunday, June 22nd, we officially wel-

comed Bill and Britnee Sanseverino as

new members of our Shenkel Church Fam-

ily. Bill and Britnee have two sweet

daughters; Olivia Jade, age 7, and Delia

Mae, age 4. Bill is a self-employed land-

scaper and enjoys hiking, camping, fishing

and family activities in his off time. Brit-

nee works as an account manager for

PECO in Philadelphia and loves gardening,

hiking, vacationing and pretty much any-

thing outdoors. We are so happy to have

the Sanseverino Family here with us!

WELCOME NEW SHENKEL MEMBERS….

Joan and Joe Palubinsky are back!! Offi-

cially! As you all know, Joan and Joe had

moved away and left us for awhile, but have

recently moved closer again and happily

returned to their Shenkel Family. We are so

happy to have them back in the fold. Joe

loves to fish and watch old classic movies

and TV shows. Joan spends her free time

reading, crocheting and is famous here at

Shenkel for her wonderful calligraphy.

Sunday, June 22nd was a very special day for this angelic looking little lady. Delia Mae Sanseverino, age 4, received the sacrament of Holy Baptism the same morning that her parents, Bill and Britnee were received as new mem-bers of our church. Delia has a big sis-ter, Olivia Jade, age 7. Congratulations to them all.
