A Merry Xmas…A Safe and Relaxing New Year… Recharged and ready for learning in 2020!

This is our last Jumbunna for 2019. Many would think that we would be winding down and taking things easy, however, as usual, there have been many activities for students to get involved in besides their everyday learning in the classroom!

K-6 Assembly

On Thursday 5 December, we announced K-6 Prefects for 2020 at our assembly. The Prefects in alphabetical order are: Matilda Hansen, Summa Riley and Lily Stacey. The K-6 captains for 2020 are Miriam Harrison and Lewis Leonard. I would like to congratulate all our prefects on being selected by their peers for this prestigious position at our school. All of them have been recognised for the great job they do here every day at WCS. Year 6 Luncheon

Friday 7 December saw our Year 6 luncheon. It was fantastic that so many parents were there to celebrate a major rite of passage of their children - officially finishing primary school and about to enter Year 7 in high school next year. What I can say is that the whole year group are a great bunch of students – they do you as parents proud – as they do the school and the community proud. I am expecting big things of this group as they move through their high school journey. Rainbow Acknowledgement Day

On Tuesday 10 December we had our last Rainbow Acknowledgement Day for 2019. On what was a very hot day, students enjoyed the various activities at the town pool, including the two inflatables. This is an integral part of our positive behaviour for learning and wellbeing program at WCS. Thank you to Mr Zayied for his organisation of this event. 2019 Presentation Night

On Thursday 12 December we had our Presentation night. It was a night where we celebrated the achievements and successes of your children. We had many awards to give out because of the nature of and the wide variety of successes that students have enjoyed this year. I look forward to seeing what successes 2020 brings for our students at WCS. Thank you to Mrs Westgarth and Mrs Taylor and their band of merry helpers in organising this night. 2019 P&C Excellence in Teaching Award

Congratulations to Mrs Robertson on the richly deserved honour of being recognised as an outstanding educator with this award. On what has been a popular choice, Emma goes ‘above and beyond’ with both her students in the classroom and her commitment to the community. Emma is the third recipient of this award. Well Done Emma!

Staff Movement

We have three key staff members who have been stalwarts of the school going on extended leave in 2020. To Mrs Westgarth, Mrs Hawkes and Mrs Whiteley, I would like to publicly acknowledge the decades of dedication and expertise you have provided to the students and community of Warren. The school has been very fortunate over the years to have three outstanding educators guiding, mentoring, advising and teaching at WCS. As a school we will miss them all - their experience, enthusiasm, professionalism and their camaraderie. I wish them all well in their future endeavours and hope they stay in touch and let us know how they are progressing. Mrs Perry is moving to the Newcastle area to join Mr Perry and I would like to wish her well and thank her for her won-derful and professional contribution to our school. Mrs Quigley has been offered full time employment next year and we wish her well and thank her for her dedication and professionalism. Mrs Evans will not be returning in 2020 for personal reasons and I would like to thank her for her contribution to the school. Twilight Swimming Carnival 2020

For forward planning, I would like to remind parents that a twilight swimming carnival will be held at the Warren Pool from 3.30pm on Thursday 6 February 2020. The school will only be providing minimal supervision on Friday 8 February 2020. Some good news from around the world

The humpback whale population in the South Atlantic now number approximately 24,900 – almost 93% of their population size before they were hunted to the brink of extinction (BBC)

Christmas Holidays and Term 1 2020 Start Date

Finally, to the students, staff, parents and the community. It has been a wonderful year as Principal of Warren Central School – how time flies! I would like to thank the staff for their wonderful contribution to the school this year. I would also like to wish everyone a safe, enjoyable and relaxing festive season. All students (except for Kindergarten) return on Wednesday 5 February 2020. See you all happy and healthy in 2020.

High School Excursion to Gold Coast

In Week 8 Mrs Lovelock, Ms Maxwell and Mr Hinton took 34 students on an excursion to the Gold Coast for 5 nights. During our stay we were provided with delightful food and exquisite accommodation at Treasure Island Holiday Park. Throughout the week we visited Dreamworld, Whitewater World, Sea World, Discount Factory Outlets, Wet ‘n Wild, Get Wet Surf School and Robina Shopping Centre. We’d like to say thank you to the teachers who gave up their time for us and made the excursion possible, it was a terrific experience and we all appreciated the adventure. We’d also like to say thanks again to Davis Contracting, Warren Rotary Club and Star of the Sea College for their generous donations that helped reduce the cost of the excursion for us all.

Aimee Sheppard, Sophie Hopkin and Braith Boyd.

Highlights-

• The excursion was an exciting experience because I got to see a tiger at Dreamworld’s tiger show. Braith Boyd

• I think Dreamworld was the best because of the rides and the Whitewater World slides were fun too. Mackenzie Buxton

• My favourite part of the excursion was going to Sea World, where the sea lions put on a funny show for us. Natalie Walters

• My favourite part of the excursion was Wet ‘n Wild because the rides were fun. Lakkari Williams

• Sea World was the best because I saw dolphins, polar bears, penguins, big sharks and sting rays. Harry Hammond

• I think that the excursion was really good, I liked going on all the roller-coasters at Dreamworld and cooling off at Whitewater World. Zoe Bailey

• My highlight was going to the Get Wet Surf School as for many of us it was a first and definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. Another highlight was going to the Robina shopping centre for the afternoon. Aimee Sheppard

• One of my highlights was going to Whitewater World as the lines were short and we had time to go on many of the slides. After being at Sea World we had the choice to go to the DFOs where we spent time shopping. Sophie Hopkin

• I enjoyed Treasure Island Holiday Park because it had four pools, one slide, two spas and a big jumping pillow. Fletcher Hunt

• I enjoyed surfing at the beach because it was a learning experience and I love the salty water in my eyes. Lloyd O’Brien

• I really liked surfing because it was a new experience that turned out to be really fun. Lilly Higgins

Art in perspective

This term Year 8 have been looking at one-point perspective. Students were asked to design a scene using perspective, draw it onto canvas and paint it. We have many creative students in Year 8 who produced some impressive paintings. A few students didn’t quite finish their works of art.

Award-Winning Financial Literacy Program

Students in Years 7-11 were fortunate to be given a last-minute opportunity to participate in Australia’s award-winning Financial Literacy Program “Start Smart” on Monday 16 December. Year 7 and Year 8 students participated in the workshop “Smart Choic-es”, learning to reflect on and discuss influences on their financial choices and understanding financial responsibility. For students in Years 9-11 a number of topics were covered in their 2 hour workshop, includ-ing “Smart Earning” (pay rates, superannuation, tax and their entitlements), “Smart Saving” (benefits and barriers to saving) and “Smart Investing” (investment strategies such as super, shares and the stock mar-ket). Thank you very much to Troy Walsh from Commbank for travelling all the way out from Bris-bane to equip our students with key money manage-ment skills in an informative and engaging approach.
