WARREN CENTRAL SCHOOL RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE LEARNERS 1 It’s a goal of many singers to say they’ve sung on stage in the Concert Hall of the Sydney Opera House and Emily Smith and Abigail Irving must have been pinching themselves when they found themselves doing just that recently – to a full house! The two Year 8 singers joined with others taking part in the Festival of Choral Music where more than 4000 students performed as part of choirs, instrumental and vocal ensembles, solos, chamber trios and symphonic, concert and stage bands. The girls performed as part of the NSW Public Schools State Choir over two nights. The girls showed great commitment and determination in embracing the opportunity to take part in the event. They only received their music two weeks prior to the festival and had just two full days of rehearsing with the other members of the choir who came from all over NSW. Learning six challenging songs, some composed by Sally Whitwell, who has been involved in Coonamble’s Moorambilla Festival, was no mean feat but both girls rose to the challenge, no doubt spurred on by the excitement of performing on such a world-renown stage. “Spending a day rehearsing in the North Foyer of the Sydney Opera House, whilst overlooking Sydney Harbour was fantastic. The space made you feel as if you were sailing in a yacht!” said Abigail. Emily was overheard to say as she came off the stage, “I’ve just sung at the Opera House! I’ve just sung at the Opera House!” Both wished to acknowledge Katie Sinclair (ex Warren choir director), Michelle Leonard (Artistic Director, Moorambilla Voices), Camilla Ward (The Creative Voice Studio, Dubbo) and our own Ms Reeves, Assistant Principal, as major influences on the development of their voices and confidence in singing. They also wished to acknowledge the Macquarie Conservatorium of Music for promoting programs offered by the NSW Department of Education and Communities’ Arts Unit. Book Week Celebrations

Another HUGE book Week assembly will be held this Thursday at 1:30pm in the school hall it would be great to see as many parents/caregivers and community members in attendance to show support. I can’t wait to see the students and teachers dressing up in this year’s theme “Connected to Reading”. A big thank you to Mrs Narelle Whittaker and Mrs Judy Ridley for all their efforts in organising the assembly, guest readers and competitions again this year.

Senior Constable Skene Visits Warren Central School Last week Snr Constable Skene of Youth Command spoke with our 7-10 students in regards to Offensive Behaviour, Cyber Bullying and the effects of drugs and alcohol. The presentations informed the students of the dangers and their responsibility when engaging in behaviours and actions that can be avoided by being a responsible school and community member. Snr Constable Skene said he was pleased with the response and the attitudes of the students. They all participated and engaged in the discussions around the topics.

Snr Constable Skene will be back soon to present to our 5/6 and catch up with some of the Year 7 and 8’s. Thank you Snr Constable for your support.

HSC Trial Exams I would like to wish all of our Yr 12 HSC students the best of luck in their Trial HSC exams. We hope they try their best and gain the results they truly deserve. Yellow band morning teas Last week I was able to hold the first of our yellow PBL band celebration morning teas. On Wednesday we had the K-6 students and on Thursday the 7-12 students for morning tea with the deputy in the hall. In total we had approximately 110 students attend over the 2 days.

I would like to thank all of those students for consistently displaying our PBL values of Respectful, Responsible, Learners and I look forward to the next morning tea which will be held in week 9.

School Community Consultation Meeting The school would like to invite all parents, carers, students, teachers and interested community members to a School Community Consultation Meeting on 2 September at the Golf Club 7:00pm for a 7:30pm start.

This is an opportunity for you to participate in setting the direction of the next school plan for 2015-17 and is part of the new Local Schools Local Decisions initiative of the Department of Education and Communities.

We will use the following 5 questions: 1. What sort of school do we want to be? 2. What sort of students do we want to produce?JSDFKLASJKF 3. What do we want our students to experience? 4. What contexts are they headed for beyond school and are we currently preparing them for that? 5. How will our teachers provide learning experiences that prepare our students adequately for life beyond school

in the 21st century world? Looking forward to seeing you on the night.

FROM THE RELIEVING PRINCIPAL

JUMBUNNA ISSUE 3, TERM 3, 2014

Late to School There is an increasing concern that a group of students are attending school late. This means that they are missing out on valuable learning not only related to pastoral care and PBL but also important learning required to complete BOSTES courses. As of this week, students who are late three times in one week will have their parents or carers contacted by the Deputy Principal or Principal for an explanation. You will also receive a letter in the post outlining the importance of students attending school on time every day. No satisfactory explanation and no improvement will result in students being referred for a personalised attendance plan. We seek your support in getting students to school on time. Every minute lost is one too many. Uniform Whilst the majority of students wear the school uniform proudly each day there is still a minority of students who are consistently turning up out of uniform. If your child is out of uniform for a particular reason, a note or verbal communication to the school is required. Uniform can be purchased directly from the school and from local businesses in Warren at very reasonable prices. Students who are out of uniform three times in a week without explanation will be issued with a letter. Updating Information It is extremely important for parents and carers to update their contact phone numbers and addresses with the school. This allows us to contact you if there is an emergency or other matter that requires prompt attention. Incorrect information will affect where confidential letters and reports are posted. Parents and caregivers must also notify the school of any medical conditions so that if illness or accidents occur your child can receive the best medical treatment available. Please contact the school during school hours on 6847 4438 to amend your details. CHS State Lawn Bowls On Monday Daniel Stanley, Matthew Marks and Jack Taylor represented Warren Central School in the state finals of the Central Schools Lawn Bowls. The boys were placed in Pool B with the pre-tournament favourites Peak Hill, Guyra, Bowraville 1 and Trundle. After a first round bye the team won their first game 9-1 against Guyra and followed up with easy victories over Bowraville 1 and Trundle. In their final pool game against an experienced Peak Hill they finished 9 all. After a short break to work out the pool winners on for and against, Warren was proclaimed pool winners and therefore played Coolamon in the semifinals. Warren started the semi well winning the first three ends but Coolamon dug deep to lead 7-5 with three ends left. Warren fought back with some inspiring bowls to level the score at 7 all, before Coolamon closed out the final two ends to win. Daniel Stanley led the team brilliantly all day playing some outstanding bowls that had him in the running as player of the tournament. Matthew and Jack played solidly throughout the day and as one of the youngest teams in the finals they will be far stronger next year.

CWA The CWA Public Speaking Competition is being held at the CWA Hall on Monday 25 August 2014. The students will be accompanied and supervised by Mr Greenwood. Students in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 this term will be working on the CWA poster featuring the country of study: Republic of Botswana. Children can find information at home, in the town and school libraries and during lessons. Ms Reeves – Assistant Principal Mrs Westgarth – Rel. Assistant Principal Members of 4/5 Topaz have been studying Forensic Science in Science and Technology. They have been learning that whenever someone goes somewhere, they leave a little bit of themselves behind. This evidence is often used by the police to catch and convict criminals. Sometimes a footprint, the tiniest trace of hair, blood, skin or fabric or a single fingerprint can place a suspect at the scene of a crime and it is the scientist and the microscope that will prove that person’s guilt. Class members have been taking their own fingerprints and also collecting tiny samples to examine under the microscope. Many criminals think they have gotten away with it but they forget that the Forensic scientist will catch them!!

9/10 Ag Excursion to “Haddon Rig” The 9/10 Ag class visited “Haddon Rig” to observe the process of shearing sheep, classing and skirting the wool and back lining the sheep. Mr Shannon Mitchell looked after us and also showed us how to use sheep dogs effectively in the yards. There were 3 shearers and 3 rouseabouts and Brooke Mitchell who was helping out as well. They were shearing Merino ewes and 112 sheep were shorn. Students who participated in this valuable learning experience were Emily Graham, Danika Shepherd, Brooke Mitchell and Kaitlyn Ledger with Mrs Taylor and Mrs Fitzgerald. Thank you to the “Haddon Rig” management and their team for hosting us. Every time we do go out, we learn a lot of things that we can take and use later on in life. We enjoyed every little bit of the experience and will gladly do it again!

Replacing the Lab with Sheep Yards

On Thursday 17 July Matt Marks, Joe Marks, Harry Glover and Jack Taylor accompanied Mr Murray to Raby Station to look at Maths and Science in action.

These students were chosen because of great behaviour, completion of set work and a real interest in agriculture.

A trial was being conducted to evaluate a new type of sheep eartag and the boys were able to see concepts of experimental design and statistics in a practical context. It also provided an opportunity to see that science does not require a laboratory and lab coat. This laboratory was actually sheep yards and work clothes replaced the lab coat.

In addition the boys learnt skills in catching lambs, vaccination, drenching and yard building. The boys had a great day and are really looking forward to further trips to evaluate the performance of the tags.

Staff at Raby were very impressed with the work ethic of the students and look forward to them visiting again.

Our boys are to be commended on the way in which they conducted themselves and represented the school in a really positive manner.

Mr W. Murray

Why have a depression awareness day? Depression and anxiety, which are closely linked, are common mental illnesses. At any one time one million people in Australia have depression and 2.3 million have anxiety. Anyone can become depressed, anxious or both, the latter being not uncommon. Statistics tell us that in Australia 10,000 young people, in any one year, have depression; it is one of the 3 leading causes of death in the age group 15-34yrs. In any one year 2000 people die from suicide. The economic burden is high, depression being the leading cause of non-fatal disability. It costs Australia $14.9 billion annually and with 6 million working days lost. At our day you will hear four great speakers:

Professor Chris Tennant, the Professor Emeritus from the Department of Psychological Medicine at Royal North Shore Hospital.

Dr. Tonelle Handley PhD, a young woman from Uni. Of NSW who has done some original research into suicide in young people.

Julian Huxley, a former Wallaby who developed depression following treatment for the removal of a brain tumour.

Nic Newling, a young man from the Black Dog Institute who comes highly recommended.

From Dubbo the Zoo to Zoo cyclists are lending their support by cycling from Dubbo to Warren, leaving Dubbo at 05.30 to arrive in Warren in time for the start of the Day. It has been confirmed that the Beyond Blue bus will be there and you can interact with their people. Working with Rotary we have registered this day as a Rotary ‘Hat Day,’ which is a Rotary charity raising funds for Rotary Australia Mental Health Research. ALL the proceeds from a raffle being held will go to mental health research. IT IS A FREE DAY, including lunch so please come along and have an interesting day. Children are catered for and are most welcome. Venue; Sports and Cultural Centre, Warren. When: Sunday 24th August Time: 10.30am SHARP For catering purposes and further information please phone: 0419604957 Or 0419289498 The program continues in term 3, with the service being provided to 12 students who receive individualised programs in speech/sound development and in language (receptive and expressive). This term the therapists undertook their assessments via ‘Tele-health’, where students were assessed at school via VC. Students commenced their programs in week 4, and will now attend 6 half hour sessions for 6 weeks. Parents are encouraged to attend all sessions so they can support their child at home with strategies devised by the Therapists. Also, classroom teachers are provided with individualised programs for each student to further support their needs at school. Added supports and revision across the school and home environments ensures the success of the program. This term Mrs J Brooker and Mrs T Smith are both involved in the organisation and delivery of the program in the school. Mrs J Brooker, Learning and Support Teacher
