Music shipments slumpfrom April, 1991 statsAfter making gains in January and February, sales and shipments of music videos, cassettesingles, other singles, cassettes and compactdiscs declined for the second straight monthin April.

Shipments were down nine per cent fromApril, 1991 and the net value of sales declinedtwo per cent. Brian Robertson, president ofthe Canadian Recording Industry Association, says the figures are still strongly influencedby returns from November and December. Hethinks the return factor could continue intoMay.

"I can't see any other reason for thedecline," Robertson says. "You won't be ableto get a true reading until early in the summer."

Cassettes continued their sharp declinefrom a year earlier while CDs are slightlyahead of last year. "I certainly would like tosee the sales of compact discs more healthythan they are," Robertson says.

For the year to date, shipments are stillup seven per cent over last year and the netvalue of sales is up 11 per cent.

Stop the presses ... ! This, just in. CRIAhas anew slate of officers for the 1992/93operating year. They are: Paul Burger, president of Sony Music Canada, Chairman;Stan Kufin, president of Warner Music Canada,vice-chairman; Deane Cameron, president ofCapitol Records -EMI of Canada, pastchairman; and Ross Reynolds, president ofMCA Records Canada, treasurer. (EC: That'sstop the presses news if I ever saw stop thepresses news before . . I)

Sony as a partner ... ? Moses Znaimer'sbid for that British television station willrequire a bit more "grease". Time Life pulledout, but Znaimer apparently has a spade ... ortwo up his sleeve. The successful candidate

will have to replace all the VCRs in the country... about 10 million of them. Rumours have itthat Sony could be the next partner. If that'sthe case, what a coup. For an in-house deal,Sony could probably manufacturer the VCR'sfor just a few bob. On the other hand, what's$400 times 10 million? (EC: A lot of bob!)

The stars are on the road ... ! When thegoing gets tough, the stars get out and hustle

. so they say. Toronto has been targeted bymore than a few name recording stars. I heardMariah Carey was in town to woo a selectgroup of buyers, and Wynonna Judd droppedby for a secret meeting with the press .. . oneor two, I'm not sure. What I am sure of thoughis the very nice and intimate spread A&M hadfor Chris DeBurgh. There were only about 40of us at the sit-down dinner . . . that includedbuyers, some radio people, and a couple of usfrom the trades. That brings up a good point. If the buyers, who were wined and dined withthe stars, didn't get extra free goods and extra, extra discounts, plus this and that, plus moreadvertising bucks, would they order theproduct because they remembered the nightout? Just asking. (EC: Don't ask . . .

Eye on HMV . . . I That new Torontoentertainment weekly that's beginning to carveitselfa niche in the granite underworld, levelleda broadside at HMV and its Toronto superstorein the current issue. The unnamed authordidn't have far to go for comments fromHMV's competition. Just a few doors northand across the street. The piece was actuallywell written and posed an interesting question. How deep are those British pockets? Theymust be operating pretty close too, if not underthe line of profit, considering their overhead.A quick check last week however, revealedthat some of the prices at HMV's superstorewere actually higher than up, or across thestreet. (EC: They're not even buying at thoseprices . . . I)

Will there be a casualty ... ? RememberJumbo the elephant? He got hit by a train. Hethought he saw a light at the end of the tunnel. . . and you know the rest. It's nice to havesomething to fall back on when the one yearcontract runs out ... just in time. (EC: I '11 haveto read that one a few times . . . /)

Bye Bye Birdie ... One of the best showsto hit Toronto in a long time. It was great, butnot only did it get raves from the press ... therewas a lot of behind -the -scenes carping fromthe press. I think it was wonderful that theypraised the show regardless of the fact theyweren't happy about how they were treated. Afew were so unhappy they didn't stay to theend. Well, publicity and public relations arebecoming a lost art in this country. (EC: Do ityourself . . . might not be the answer!!!)

Country sound on AM ... no good? Wasthat what was said at the recent CRTC hearingsin Toronto??? Did artists actually say theydidn't like the sound of AM radio when theirrecords wereplayed? Could be that they won'tget the airplay. Meanwhile, the country heavieshave been leaning on some of the artists, intimidating them to do what they're told.(EC: We've been there before!!!)

Poor Honest Ed ... ! Now that Ed Mirvishdoesn't have the push and shove PR servicesof Gino Empry, he's been dropped off the listof Toronto's favourites. Toronto Councilturned thumbs down on the proposal to tagHonest Ed on the street signs around hisfamous emporium. Gino would have beenbanging his telephone and butting his headinto the Mayor's office until he got the go-ahead for the signs. Remember, he was one ofthe sparks that got Ed the street sign recognitionaround the Royal Alex. And the Mirvishes gotpermission to build their new theatre withoutparking. Now, how do you think they got that?(EC: Don't tell me . 1)

Out of the mouths ... ! Suppose the CRTCsaid they would give the CKO frequency inToronto, and maybe even across the country,to a non-profit organization that would programnothing but Cancon? Yeah . . . 100 per centCancon! It could be like public radio, withoutthe bumps and zits of the CBC. It would be 24 -hour a day block programming. Rock, pop, country, rap, blues, jazz, alternative, reggae, elevator and yes . . . even classical. What'sinteresting is that we have an abundance ofthis type of worldclass music . .. but nowhereto hear it. Most stations are playing the samefew Cancon records. With more gold and

- oldies stations coming on stream, newrecordings are limited, and most not heard.(EC: What a great idea! All you need issomeone who wants to wave a flag but whodoesn't want to make a profit. Good luck!)

Keeping up with the boss . . . ! Age cansure take its toll, when you have a boss who'syounger than you. The late nights and boozecans ... and whatever, are alright when you'reyoung and nuts, but when you get into theupper forties, that weight you're losing isn'tbecause of dieting. There's trouble brewing. And there's going to be more than a couple ofcasualties in what is already a troubled camp.

The fat will trim itself . . . ! Now that themegadeals are apart of the recording business. . . not to mention how important the termmeans in the lawyering business, watch forsome top acts to walk. A few of them, alreadybeing talked about, have visions of grandeurthat won't necessarily parlay into a $60 milliondeal. So they may end up with no deal at all.A record company can launch a lot of careerswith $60 million. (EC: Ain't it the truth . . . ?)

Lenthall explains that, over the years, she has developed a "personal hands-onworking agreement with her artists, so that wework together, hand in hand through theircareer. It's worked with some and not withothers for various reasons."

Prior to taking on the Michael B. project,Lenthall was network director with Superadio(Whyte Broadcasting) in Ottawa. This wasone of the last management positions she haseffectively been involved in through her longand colourful broadcast career.

Lenthall began her career in the "people"business in 1975 as part of her collegecurriculum at Algonquin College in Ottawa, where she was majoring in Radio andTelevision Broadcasting. As manager of thegroup Mainstream, she became aggressivelyinvolved in advancing her communicationexpertise through motivational speaking atconventions.

Lenthall has worked radio in the Ottawaarea with Key Radio (CKBY-FM) and StandardBroadcasting (CJSB AM and CJOHTelevision). She also instructed for four yearsat Trebas Institute.

Her time spent with Superadio wasperhaps the most important in Lenthall'sbroadcast career. She took part in developingthe application of a proposed radio station forthe Ottawa market (FM 99), as well asapplications for the Vancouver (FM 95) andToronto (FM 92) markets in 1990. She wasalso production co-ordinator of Hot 30Countdown, a Canadian countdown show forthe CHR radio market.

"We started the Canadian talentdevelopment program for FM applicationsthat has been copied across Canada with otherapplications," Lenthall says with gratification.

"When I left Superadio I was extremelytired, physically. I wanted to have a break andlater resume the love of my life, which wasdeveloping Canadian talent for internationalcompetition."

After a brief hiatus she returned to Ottawaand became a partner and general manager ofHulen Enterprises, which specializes infreelance tri-media production andmanagement. She also originated Bootcamp,a novel developmental program concept whichtransforms artists into more proficient andpolished performers. One of her first clientswas Michael "B." Benac, who had heard of herthrough talk on the street.

"We were only to have met for a coupleof hours, but after eight hours, we hit it off andI knew that destiny had taken its course. Ifound something in a very rough tape that Iknew could be developed. We then enteredinto an intensive Bootcamp training program, which is a matter of positive thinking all theway . . . inch by inch, everything's a cinch."

Benac says his group first emerged morethan four years ago when they started jammingafter their day was over at their Ottawa highschool. "The next thing you know we got alittle more serious and started rehearsing threeor four times week. Basically, what the

group is now is what it was then."The main difference in the group is that

it has grown from five to seven members. ThePower now comprises Dan E. (lead guitar),Aln Funk (keyboards), Che (drums, percussion), The Goose (bass), and July andEmjay (background vocalists). The oldestmember of the group is 21, while three are stillin their teens. The tight-knitband affectionatelyrefers to Lenthall as "Mother Superior."

As Lenthall explains, the band's music isnot locked into one identifiable genre. Sheprefers the diversely catch-all "hip hop, funk,R&B, rap" moniker, suggesting that it'simpossible to categorize them. "Michaeltranscends numerous musical categories. Hehits pop, CHR and MOR and his demographicbase is very wide."

Lenthall had known Gilles Godard,producer/songwriter and owner of BookshopRecords, from the early years of his career. Hewas her choice to produce her new project.Godard, a native of Cornwall, Ont. who is nowbased in Nashville, is working both sides ofthe border in fostering and promoting Canadiantalent. "When the Michael 13. project cameup, Iphoned Gilles and said, 'Here's somethingI promised you 12 years ago. Are youinterested?' He was slightly interested. Weflew to Nashville the next day ... and we hada deal" for the production, Lenthall says.Godard also co -wrote songs with Benac, whodescribes his mentor as "a fun guy to workwith."

After first getting together last May,Godard and the group started working on analbum in July. Though the group is no lip-synching Milli Vanilli and are all capable ofplaying their instruments, some veteranNashville session players took part in therecording. Benac says he was initiallysomewhat apprehensive about a rap/funkgroup recording in the capital of countrymusic, but his worries soon diminished. "OnceI was there, I was surprised how much R&Bthere was in Nashville."

The group now has a four -songpromotional compact disc and is just finishinga full-length album. Benac says he would liketo sign a world-wide deal with a major label, but nothing has turned up yet.

Since the band has been so involved inrecording for the past 10 months, they've onlyplayed a handful of live shows since going

Part Five of a series - Videos are an important part of the music industry

Music videos are crucial to the progressive retailersby Steve McLeanMusic videos shown on television have introduced a number of acts to consumers who, in turn, purchase their products at retail outlets. Thus they are a key marketing tool. And long formvideos, featuring concerts, interviews or a series of videos packaged together, are alsobecoming an important part of the industry. So important in fact, that, in 1992, the CanadianRecording Industry Association has started including shipments and sales of music videos in itsmonthly tabulations of how well the industry is doing.

Even if it doesn't consciously register onpeople when they buy audio recordings, videoshave an important effect on sales, says JasonSniderman.

"Videos have become such a routine partof everyone's life," he says. "The waycommercials are cut and the way feature filmsare cut have a lot to do with the impact videohas had in the last five or six years."

Sniderman, the vice-president of RoblanDistributors, says people will always buycompact discs and tapes for their listeningpleasure, but videos are an excellentcomplement; either through exposure ontelevision or through long -form video sales instores.

Video sales have become an importantpart of Sniderman's operation and he saysthere are three main reasons why people buyvideos:

1) "If they really like a video by a band

COVER STORY continued from page 7

into the studio. One reason is that many clubscan't accommodate the large seven -pieceband. Another reason is more personal toBenac and his straitlaced entourage. "We don'tplay the bar circuit much. I don't believe in itbecause there's too much stuff happening inthe bars that I don't agree with."

When the group does play live, Benacsays they put on an energetic, professionallychoreographed show. "I love to play live likeyou wouldn't believe. There's nothing like it.There's no actual stop of the flow. We'realways moving, jumping, dancing. Beforeanything we're a live band."

Those live performances also helped towin the group eight awards at last year'sAmerican Guild of Music competition inDetroit. The guild is a professionalorganization which promotes and developsmusical talent in North America.

Lenthall cautiously refers to Michael B.and The Power as "Canada's best kept secret-- because we are better known outside ofCanada."

Having gained contacts through workingthe international market, Lenthall isencouraged by the interest she has been ableto generate for the band. She says the grouphas received, in principle, a touringarrangement and two record deal offers fromoverseas.

Lenthall believes that Michael B. has the"talent and the capability to reach any goalpossible, provided there are opportunitiesplaced before him and not stumbling blocks. If there are stumbling blocks, we will overcomethem. The potential is there. I hope it will berecognized in Canada first."

and they want to make it part of their collection, they'll buy that."

2) "If it's a concert representation thatthey wouldn't have the opportunity to see onMuchMusic or anything, then they'll buy itbecause of that."

3) "Something like Madonna's JustifyMy Love which never got any video play butsomeone wanted to own, they'd go out andbuy that."

Sniderman says that opera andperforming arts videos have always beentremendous sellers and will continue to be asnew technological advances keep beingintroduced. "I think that the impact of thehome entertainment system, with laser discplayers or video players hooked up to a stereo, has made it a lot more attractive for people tobuy videos."

But Sniderman's not too worried aboutcomputer and satellite technology becomingso advanced that it could deprive him of hislivelihood by allowing people to have desiredprogramming beamed directly into their livingrooms instead of having to go out and buy it."The social aspect of shopping in NorthAmerican culture is very important, aA isactually owning something as opposed tohaving it piped in through your modem."

Cathy Pitt, the former general managerof HMV's flagship downtown Toronto store(who has since been appointed as an HMVboard member and director of operations),says music and special interest videos andfilms account for six to seven per cent of thestore's total sales.

"We could increase it tomorrow by givingit more space and more inventory, but withinour store objectives we're really pleased with

Blagona to work withMcClear Pathe StudiosJanus Management, consisting of producer/engineer Nick Blagona and personal managerand marketing specialist M.J. Russell, haveentered a partnership with Toronto's McClearPathe Studios.

It is hoped the partnership will helpdevelop a creative environment for new artistsand bands.

Blagona designed and was the chiefengineer of Le Studio in Morin Heights, Que.in the 1970s. He co -produced Kim Mitchell'sAkimbo Alogo and also gotproduction creditswith April Wine and Fist. He has engineeredfor Deep Purple, Gowan, Boy's Brigade, ThePolice, Rainbow, Chicago, Streetheart,Nazareth, Ian Hunter, The BeeGees, CatStevens, Gerry Rafferty, Pilot, Valdy, andRobert Charlebo is.

the performance."Pitt says the store's video booths

complement its listening posts as an effectivetool to focus attention on products that mightotherwise go unnoticed. "They really make adifference in what we sell."

So does exposure on MuchMusic. "Wenotice quite a difference when something isadded at Much. It's a really important piece ofinformation when we're buying."

Pitt adds that the store has also launchedsuccessful marketing campaigns by advertisingon MuchMusic or shows like Dan Gallagher'sVideo Hits and Good Rockin' Tonite.

54-40Dear DearColumbia - CK 5440-HThis is 54-40's first album for Sony Musicand it ranks as their best next to 1987'sShow Me. The album was recorded live offthe floor at Tom Petty's favourite studio, and much of his equipment was actuallyused in the process. Petty's engineer, DonSmith, produced. All the band membersshare writing credits with lead singer/guitarist Neil Osborne responsible for thelyrics. The strong first single, Nice To LuvYou, features Osborne's brother David onharmonica. Book is full of hooks and has anice organ sound. Apollo & Me and She La,a song about domestic assault, also standout. (CD reviewed) -SM

ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK - CountryStraight Talk(Music performed by Dolly Parton)Hollywood - CD -61303-PThe title track was taken as a single fromthis package, but It didn't fare too well.Parton is running up against a lot ofcompetition and like her male veterancounterparts, chart time is short time. Thesheer entertainment value of this albumshouldn't be overlooked however. PartonIs every clever writer and she delivers withthe same passion and warmth that hasattracted her loyal legions of fans. Shouldbe a must for every country radio stationlibrary. Although Straight Talk didn't do it,there are plenty of other tracks that justmight. Key are Dirty Job, Blue Me and BlueGrace. Front rack this one. The cover itselfshould sell. (CD reviewed) - WG

VARIOUS ARTISTS -Pop/NoveltyThe Blue Jays Album ... Class of '92Sony - ZK 92000-HAn album that supports two good causes:fundraising for the Variety Club and stirringup fan support for the Toronto Blue Jays. The album encompasses a number ofmusical styles and features a number ofToronto radio personalities including: Erin

Davis of CHFI 98.1; Jake Edwards andJohn Gallagher of 0107; Fred Pattersonand Phil Evans of CFNY-FM ; and HumbleHoward from MIX 99.9. Some songs areoriginals but others are parodies of oldertunes like California Sun, I Fought The Law,Whole Lotta Shakin' Coin' On, Surf City,Along Came Jones, and Let's Go All TheWay. And the Beastie Boys of the broadcastbooth, Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth, rapa play-by-play of a make believe ball game. The lyrics are expectedly sophomoric butthey're all in good fun. Nowit's pay back time. Noted knob twister DonWas produced four of the album's 11 cuts, including the gritty, blues -Influenced firstsingle, Everytime I Roll The Dice. Was alsoproduced Good Man, Good Woman, a duetwith Bonnie Raitt which first appeared onher Luck Of The Draw album and won aGrammy for Best Rock Vocal Duo. But Wasand Raitt are just the tip of the iceberg.Melissa Etheridge, Tom Petty and membersof his band, Waddy Wachtel, Jim Horn (whoco -produced the rest of the album withMcClinton), the Uptown Horns, and PaulShaffer and The World's Most DangerousBand all lend a welcome hand with theirefforts. The album effortlessly mixes styles, going from the party sounds of Why Me? tothe funky Can I Change My Mind to the jazz -tinged Cease And Desist to a bouncy versionof Bob Marley's reggae classic, Stir It Up.McClinton deserves a hit album and thisalbum deserves to be a hit. DIE TOTEN HOSEN -RockLearning English, Lesson OneVirgin - CDV 2689-0Literally translated, this German band'sname means Dead Trousers. Despite thename they've achieved multi -platinumsuccess in their homeland with sevenGerman releases. The group emerged fromDusseldorf's underground punk movementin 1982 and on this album, their first withEnglish lyrics, they salute their late '70spunk idols. And howl They cover 16 songs(with one new one thrown in for goodmeasure), with most of them including thelead singers who did the originals barkingout the re-recorded wonders with Hosen'sfront man, Campino. The guest list readslike a list of inductees into the punk rockhall of fame: Joey Ramone, Jimmy Pursey,Nick Cash, TV Smith, Johnny Thunders,Cheetah Chrome, Handsome DickManitoba, Ronnie Biggs, Wreckless Eric,Captain Sensible, Charlie Harper, and more.Songs include classics like The Ramones'Blitzkrieg Bop, Sham 69's If The Kids AreUnited, 999's Nasty Nasty, The Vibrators'

Baby Baby, The Adverts' Gary Gilmore'sEyes, Wreckless Eric's Whole Wide World,The Damned's Smash It Up, and the U.K.Subs' Stranglehold. Songs I hadn't heardbefore (but wish I had) include melodicpunk tunes like The Boys' Brickf ield Nights,The Radio Stars' Dirty Pictures, TheRockafellas' Do You Remember, and EddieAnd The Hot Rods' Do Anything You WannaDo. This album is a great punk primer andshould be played LOUD on alternative andcampus stations worldwide. As a bonus, italso includes seven short vignettes whichcleverly parody actual 'Learning English'records. (CD reviewed) -SM

JASON - Country/RockOne Foot In The Honky TonkLiberty C2 96797-FJason's left his Scorchers behind but he'sstill cooking on his own with this debut soloeffort. This is an excellent album that shouldkeep most of his old electric roots rock fansand earn him some of the more traditionalcountry music fans who have made DwightYoakam a star. The music is simple yetcatchy and Jason's voice suits the materialto a T. Nashville veteran Jerry Crutchf laidproduced. Every track is strong butespecially hot are the title track, The Life OfThe Party, Already Burned, Hardluck Boy,Feels So Right, and the laid-back bluesof I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water.(CD reviewed) -SM

L7Bricks Are HeavySlash - 9 26784-2-PIt's too easy a comparison to say that L7 arewhat Nirvana would sound like if they lackedtesticles, but since so many people aredoing it I guess I'm not above jumping onthe bandwagon. This four -piece all -femaleband from Los Angeles is rock and roll at itsrawest. No keyboards, just bass and drumskeeping a heavy rhythm to support thealternately wailing and crunching guitarattack. But the songs aren't just heavy, they're loaded with hooks. Therefore, theyjust could catch on with that wider audiencethat embraced Nirvana et al. All the tracksrock, including Scrap, Pretend We're Dead,One More Thing, Mr. Integrity, Monster, and Shitlist. In keeping solidarity withanother female innovator, the groupsamples Yoko Ono from Live Peace inToronto on the album's lead track,Wargasm. Band members wrote all thesongs and co -produced the album withButch Vig. (CD reviewed) -SM

POI DOG PONDERING -HockVolo VoloColumbia CK 46960-HThe third album from this Austin, Texas -based group is less quirky and roots -orientedthan its two predecessors, eschewing folkfor a more mainstream, often soul -influencedsound. Still, an eclectic lineup of instruments

Including f lug elhorn, violin, accordion, pedal steel guitar, banjo, and Tahitianukulele and log drums augment the standardrock staples of guitar, bass and drums.Lackluster and The Hardest Thing are mytwo favourite songs, while Blood AndThunder is the band's hardest rocking songever, and Te Manu Pukarua reflectssongwriter Frank Orrall's Hawaiian roots. The album has some impressive productioncredits, with Clive Langer and AlanWinstanley producing six songs, and JerryHarrison responsible for four. Bandmembers produced the remaining fourtracks. (CD reviewed) -SM

MOLLY &THE HEYMAKERSMolly & The HeymakersReprise - 26443-2-PHere's a country band that's beenshortchanged. They have a clever methodof frenetic bombarding of instrumentationwith harmonies that makes for a lot oflistening excitement. There's nothingboring about Molly & The Heymakers. Withjust a little more promotion shove, theirnew single, Jimmy McCarthy's Truck, should begin to take hold. More than a fewmajor and secondary markets are alreadyexperimenting with this bright, flashysound. The song was written by MollyScheer, who is Molly. Also key are a couplemore Scheer solo pennings, Well Ran Dryand If Love, but don't over look HaroldDorman's penning of Mountain Of Love. Aband to watch. (CD reviewed) - WG

THE JUDY BATS -Pop/RockDown in the Shacks Where the SatelliteDishes GrowSire - CD 26801-PThe second album from this Knoxville,Tennessee beat combo is full of offbeat popsongs with a jangly guitar sound and hooksaplenty. She's Sad She Said, Margot KnownAs Missy, Is Anything, Saturday, and thetitle track are all fun numbers capable ofinducing smiles from even the sternestlisteners. The album's title is a deadgiveaway to its off -kilter lyrical contents. Azippy cover of The Kinks' Animal Farm isincluded with 11 originals. (CD reviewed)

The Mysterious Cosmic Cowboy has sentout a clever dye -cut reminder of the inclusionof a single on the new Saddlestone CD. Thetrack is titled Handle With Care and it waswritten by Chip Taylor and produced by DennyDriscoll. The single was taken from the newStealing Each Other Blind CD, released byMudge Island Recording of Gabriola Island,B.C.

Bill Lowden makes his debut for theSaddlestone label with Bird In The Sky, whichis included on Saddlestone's CD compilation,Handle With Care. Lowden recorded the trackat Nashville's Fireside Studios, where it wasproduced by Ray Doggett. The song was written

CKXR Salmon Arm on -air personality andSaddlestone recording artist Bill Lowden (I)with producer Ray Doggett.

by Ron Loranger, who also wrote fellowSaddlestone artist Gerry King's Boots & Jeans.Lowden, an on -air personality at CKXRSalmon Arm, B.C., recorded four tracks whilein Nashville. One track, Nothin' Better To Do,written by Marshall Gardner of Manitoba, hasbeen released across the U.S. on E.S.U. Recordsout of Nashville.

Wynonna Judd's I Saw The Light makesthe biggest jump this week, up to No. 40 fromNo. 61. She was in Toronto this past week fora well -kept secret promotion date. Manyretailers have front -racked her album, whichhas sparked more consumer interest and sales.

Cassandra Vasik's Wildflowers, herfollow-up to Which Face Should I Put OnTonight, has made an obvious impressionwith country programmers (see CountryPickers). As the most added single this week,Wildflowers enters the chart at No. 74.

George Fox takes off for Europe on a two-week junket that will include a performance atthe Canadian Pavilion at Expo in Seville,Spain. He will also be a guest on the special125th Canada Day celebrations planned forJuly 1 at the Auditorio de la Cartuja, alongwith Celine Dion and Blue Rodeo. Tour dates

also include Italy and Switzerland, Fox, whohas been nominated for several Big CountryAwards this year, has been spending the lastcouple of months between his home inCochrane, Alberta and Nashville, writingmaterial for his upcoming fourth album releaseslated for the late fall.

Straight Clean & Simple, the Alberta(Hussar) band, is beginning to click in withtheir single, What You Get Is What You See.The band has gained a large following inEurope where both the single and album (IronLady) have made a good impression. Thealbum was produced by Roy Warhurst, one ofthe best from the west, and is now availablethrough Saddlestone Records.

Michelle Wright moves to No. 1 this weekwith her Arista single, Take It Like A Man.Toronto's Country 59 led the way, moving thesingle into the No. 1 slot on their Top 40 chartlast week. Wright broke the Top 10 on theRPM 100 last week at No. 9 and moved easilyinto the top of the chart this week. Thecompetition was pretty stiff. She beat outSawyer Brown's Some Girls Do, Ricky VanShelton's Backroads, Travis Tritt's NothingShort Of Dying, and Collin Raye's EverySecond Counts . . . a pretty heavy bunch ofcompetitors. And they're all males to boot.

Gerry King is looking for action with hisnew Saddlestone single, Don't ComeKnockin'. Produced in Nashville by RayDoggett and King, this track is the follow-upto Heartwreck, which saw impressive chartaction over the last couple of months. Writtenby the same Hotchkiss/James/Terry team asHeartwreck, the new track is included onHandle With Care, the latest CD compilationfrom Saddlestone. The track is also includedon King's Boots & Jeans album. A video of thenew single is now in rotation on TNN andCMT in the U.S., and will be released inCanada the first week in June. King has beennominated in six categories for the upcomingB.C.
