Board of Directors
President’s MessageOn behalf of the Directors of the Penticton Historic Automobile Society I welcome you to the annual Peach City Beach Cruise. We are proud to continue the legacy of founder Ken Paton and a number of Directors who had the vision and foresight to create what has today, truly become western Canada’s premier, 3-day car show. If you are a visitor, we hope you will enjoy your time in Penticton and will take an opportunity to explore the city and surrounding area, including our beaches, shopping areas and the numerous wineries which have given the area the nickname, “Napa Valley North.” We also hope you have an opportu-nity to meet with many of the local and visiting car enthusiasts. After all, this hobby is all about cars and friend-ships.The primary objective of the Penticton
Historic Automobile Society is to fur-ther the hobby of car enthusiasts while also contributing to the community. Each year the Society makes a dona-tion to the BC Children’s Hospital, the province’s only full-service, pediatric acute care hospital that serves the one million children living in BC and the Yukon.I extend a huge thank you to our Directors who have worked so hard over the past year putting this event together. I extend a thank you to our generous sponsors, without whom we could not produce this event. Finally, thank you to Penticton Mayor and Council, the City of Penticton staff, the Regional Detachment of the RCMP and our many volunteers for their enthusiastic and generous sup-port of the Peach City Beach Cruise.

Our car’s story with us started when we went to a realtor’s Open House on an acreage in Penticton up on the West Bench in 2006. The car was the only thing in the garage. We couldn’t believe it when we opened the door and the front end of the car was staring right at us. The car was originally sold by Betts Motors in Vancouver. It belonged to a Nora Kathleen Armes who lived in Naramata, BC. The car was purchased from Mrs. Armes in 1964. We only changed the fluids, oils and grease. We have since sold the acreage and the car has moved around with us with nothing being done to it until 2011/2012. The 2012 Beach Cruise was fast approaching and time was crucial as the car was getting a few final adjustments from Brian Woods in Westbank, BC. We got her ready but we didn’t know what to expect from the old girl for the cruise from Skaha Lake to Okanagan Lakeshore Drive. She performed as if she knew these streets like the back of her hand. She’s an original Okanagan Valley car who got dressed up and came home. Winning the 1949 and Older Stock was the best Homecoming gift this old girl could have got.

1938 Ford Panel Van
2012 WinnerResto RodStuart Battie, Kaleden, BC
Seven years ago I moved to Kaleden from England. Later, I met a real car enthusiast and builder of street rods, George Brent, who got me interested in the hobby. When I saw it, I just had to have it even though it was nowhere near completed. I talked him into selling it to me as long as he finished it. This panel was built using a 1938 ford pickup and a 1946 ford panel rear. The two joined together to make it what it is today. It is running on a T.C.I. front end complete with disc brakes, powered by a sbc.350cubic inch motor, a 350 turbo transmission and a 9” rear end. Power steering, air conditioning, power seats and windows are just a few of the many extras. The paint is creamsicle orange. This panel has passed the BC vehicle insp. and also passed the national street rod association 23 point safety inspection, coming out with a NSRA safety inspector’s award. Again, thanks to George Brent and Lorne Smith for building my first street rod. I now have been to many car shows and rods runs through-out the northwest with my panel and enjoy them all. I do rank the Penticton Peach City Beach Cruise at the top. To all the organizers and sponsors, keep up the great work putting on a show like this. The parade between the lakes was amazing.

1948 Chevrolet COE Truck
2012 WinnerTruck ModifiedPatsy & Ivan Kachanowski, Fairmont Hot Springs, BC
DINO is a 1948 Chevrolet COE [Cab Over Engine] truck. The cab, originally from a larger truck, is installed on a 1976 Chevy 1/2 ton frame. This conversion no longer leaves room for the engine under the cab so the 350 Chevy crate engine is now installed under the flat deck bed. The five window cab has been totally modified with new electronics, interior and glass. The customized oak tilt flat deck is operated with an electric lift for access to the engine compartment. The engine compartment is diamond plated and includes a fifth wheel hitch. The truck body and fenders are all stock. The truck is painted in 1999 Ultra Violet with customized pin striping. Dino has all the deluxe accessories of power steering and brakes, tilt steering column and CD stereo. The truck is accessorized with custom 15 inch aluminum wheels. Dino was custom built by Jim Burke of Spokane, Washington. The truck is a pleasure to drive and its rare customized configuration makes it a favourite at car shows.

We decided to restore it as stock due to its heritage as the original shop truck at Brookland’s Motorcycles. The motorcycle shop was owned by Murray’s great-grandfather and later his great Uncle. The flathead engine is sturdy and dependable and most options available in 1953 have been added such as the 6 volt radio, a cabin heater, overdrive, side view mirrors, and fog lights. The truck appears in parades around Victoria with a vintage Harley-Davidson in the back, bringing back lots of memories to those who remember it from the past.

1959 MGA Coupe
2012 WinnerOffshoreBarry & Vicki Wood, Penticton, BC
The 1959 MGA Coupe was handed down from my father in 1993. There was a requirement for a complete restoration. That project began in 1998. This was accomplished in 5 stages. Complete suspension rebuild, minor body work and paint, new interior, drive line rebuild and a complete engine rebuild. The engine is 1800cc, flat top pistons, solid lifters, high performance cam, headers, and Weber carburetion. The engine puts out about double the original horse power. All parts and pieces are readily available from NOS (New Old Stock) to remanufactured. We tour with the car yearly, Vancouver, Whistler, Spokane, and it is driven daily around town. The Beach Cruise is our favourite show to attend.

1962 Chevy II
2012 Winner1960’s ModifiedAllen Hughes, Redmond, WA
I took delivery of the original 62 Chevy II convertible out of California in December 1995. I immediately cut the entire floor pan out and set the body on a complete mandrel-bent, 2X4 inch box tube chassis by Art Morrison. It has a 2” narrowed Morrison Mustang II IFS suspension with coil-overs. The body was massaged into a true roadster with only front glass. The car rolls on original Boyd’s Dune wheels with 17X8 up front and 17X11 on the back. Pushing the roadster is a 540 cubic inch, 623 hp BBC, built by Cope Brothers Machine. Carrying power to the Ford 9” rear end is a competition prepped Turbo 400. The exterior is single-stage Super Jet Black. The car is finished off with wool carpets and buff-tan leather interior all installed by Gabe Lopez of Gabe’s Custom Interiors of Bloomington, CA. The entire build took 10 years.

1965 Chevrolet Corvette
2012 WinnerCorvetteJames Zeleznik, West Kelowna, BC
I had looked for a long time for the right project car to surprise my wife. “Cool Ray” was the perfect car for her as she had always liked older model Corvettes. I wanted it to be the same year and ideally the same month as my wife’s birthday. I finally found the car in Tacoma and purchased it off Ebay. It was the great fit I had always intended it to be. It involved a complete rebuild. The car was basically just a body with most of the needed body parts. Gerry from Springfield Motor Sports in Peachland did the complete build starting with his legendary round tube hand built chassis. He also used Lee Baxter interiors and Kelly’s Custom Auto body and Painting to complete the car. The build took about 2 years to complete. The surprise only lasted a couple of weeks, as one day my wife went to the tire store to get her winter tires changed over on her regular car. It was the same store where I had ordered the tires and wheels for the Vette. The store clerk asked if she was there to pick up her Corvette tires. She came home and asked if we owned a Corvette and the rest is history!!

2012 WinnerMustangTim Barrell, Surrey, BC
This Shelby was purchased new as an export car and was shipped to the Philippines. A sugar cane plantation owner sent his secretary over to buy the 10 fastest cars made. The car ended up sitting in an air plane hangar for 20 years and only had 2000 miles on it. The car was then sold and imported to Canada. The car has a 427 V8 engine developing 525 horsepower on the dyno with 565 foot pounds of torque at 3400 rpm. It currently has around 40,000 miles on it and is driven whenever the weather is nice. The car is Night Mist Blue in color with White Lemans stripes. It has a white interior which was one of six factory “fluke” cars as they were not supposed to come with white interiors. The car is an early production car which makes it desirable as it has the inboard headlights, functional air scoops for the rear brakes, factory roll bar with racing harnesses, manual transmission and positraction rear end. Everyone who looks at it is surprised that Carroll Shelby has signed the car and service manual. This car is fully documented in the Shelby Registry and has 20 years worth of Philippine registry and pictures of it being unloaded off the cargo ship that brought it to Canada
and only had 2000 miles on it. The car was then sold and imported to Canada. The car has a 427 V8

This was my first car at age 16 (1976). Originally a 440 car, the car is now powered by a “custom built” Ray Barton 572 cubic inch HEMI. The engine makes 900 hp and 785 foot pounds of torque. The design, driveline and other racing equipment in this car is inspired by HEMI Super Stock cars. The wheels, wheelie wheels, wheelie bars, hood hinges, battery trays, and battery clamps were custom designed and manufactured in our shop, Tiger Tool International Incorporated. A complete biography of the car can be seen on our web site http://www.tigertool.com/gtx. A burnout by a car amazingly similar to this one can be seen at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jjr6Eac49l0.

1969 Chevrolet Camaro
2012 WinnerCamaro/FirebirdLarry Siebert, Abbotsford, BC
I’ve always loved the looks of the 1969 RS/SS Camaro. This project was almost 4 years in the making. The body has all new sheet metal panels. Using a TCI tube frame front and rear clip with polished stainless A-arms and Air Ride gives the car the “right stance” (a ground scraper). A 560 horse power custom Polished Aluminium LS3 fuel injected engine (like the newer Corvettes) with a polished T56 6 speed and a Currie 9inch rear end gives this car the modern muscle drive train. There are so many body modification done to give it “the look”. Shaved door handles, custom windshield and rear window -without the stainless trim, shaved drip rails and narrowed bumpers frenched into the body panels are for starters. Creature comforts include a custom leather interior by Lee Baxter (from West Kelowna), a narrowed 1959 Impala Dash with fabricated console that houses GPS, back up camera, DVD/ CD player, air conditioning and plus there are electric windows and seats. As for the body work, this car was on a Rotisserie for months. One of the special features is the “Ghosted Carbon Fiber” paint scheme and “Mile Deep Razberry Pearl House of Kolors” paint is all courtesy of Don Prachnau in Chilliwack. Thanks also to Richard from HotRods & Classics and Brian at Lordco. This build has truly been a labour of love. It was a real honour to win “Best in Class” & the “Mayor’s Choice” Awards.

This 1971 Hemi Cuda tribute was originally from Tennessee and was brought into Canada by the current owner six years ago. During this time, it has undergone a complete transformation and everything is new or rebuilt. It now boosts a 578 cu. in. Ray Barton racing engine that puts out over 800 hp on pump gas. All suspension has been updated with a custom Moser rear end with a four link and a Magnum Force coil-over with rack and pinion front suspension. Custom 18” rims with 13” Wilwood disc brakes and air ride shocks are in all four corners. The interior was refinished to mostly stock with the addition of a roll bar, harnesses, air conditioning and white-faced gauges.

2012 WinnerSSRPeter & Cindy Ouimet, Abbotsford, BC
This is a 2005 6 speed SSR truck that was made for and sold in Canada. There were only 320 Silver 2005 6 speeds made for Canada that year. I purchased the SSR Truck with only 120 km in 2006, from a man who did not know how to drive a truck with a standard transmission. We changed the motor to a rebuilt super charged motor. It will now put out 690 HP. We have also added Nitrous which adds another 110 HP, for a total of 800 HP. The Nitrous was plumbed up through the hood so that we can purge the Nitrous through the nostrils of the dragon. The art work was done by Curtis Hamm of Maple Ridge. The truck has 22” Asanti Wheels.

2012 WinnerPeoples Choice MotorcycleMartin Storos, Camrose, Alberta
This machine is a one of a kind custom ordered bike built by HawgZotic Custom Motorcycles, formerly of Langley BC. HawgZotic was widely recognized for their wild designs and extensive molding and flowing bodywork as seen here in the rear fender and fuel tank fitment. Exotic paintwork also seen here was another indictor of their combined talents as a shop. The trend in 2005 was to sport the wide-pack tire and be low to the ground. Though not as wide as it could have been at 280x18, it was pretty chunky in the day. All too often, with the size difference in the wheels, handling is sacrificed for style, but not so in this case as the 21x3.25” front wheel is a good mate to the rear. The show polished forged billet wheels were manufactured by HawgZotic Custom, as is the matching drive pulley. The single down tube soft tail frame is manufactured by Rolling Thunder and was designed to house a RSD (right side drive) transmission, allowing for proper balancing or centering in the frame. The installation of a set of Works Performance adjustable shocks allows the bike to sit low yet still have reasonable suspension, and the front end is made up of a set of smooth 41mm conventional legs from MID USA, mounted into a set of HawgZotic custom made triple trees with built in turn signals, which is also properly raked to even out the stance.Sitting in the chassis is a 127 cubic inch “El-Bruto” engine that comes from Midwest Motorcycle Supply’s performance division, “Ultima”. The horsepower gets to the beefy back wheel by way of a “Daeil” six speed transmission hooked up to an enclosed primary belt drive system with a mechanical Pro Clutch from Rivera Engineering. A Super “G” carburetor from S & S Performance with a Drag Specialties forward swept intake feeds the shiny beast and a set of custom fitted 2 into 2 Vance & Hines “Big Radius” exhaust gives the bike a tone that still turns heads. The ignition
keeping it all in check, is a Dyna 2000 programmable single fire system.
Stopping is handled by a pair of Russel Pro Polished brake rotors which are not the same profile as the wheels, but work fine for stopping as they’re clamped onto with HawgHalter 4 piston calipers front and rear. All the brake lines as well as control cables are braided stainless steel. This machine is a sight to behold.

2006 Acura TL
2012 WinnerTunerDale Evans, Trail, BC
My car started out as the proverbial daily driver, and it actually was for the first 3 years of its life, including winters. I have been a car guy since I was 14 and I’m in my late 60’s now. And you know what happens when you’re a car guy. You just can’t leave stuff alone. With no shop to build a rod or muscle car I went the import route. Inspired by other modified Acura TL’s I started with wheels then lowering and engine modifications and very slight exhaust work. I wanted to keep the car drivable and not have an obnoxious exhaust tone. I also wanted to have a clean, uncluttered look to the car. Next I added black overlays to complete the white/black theme. One of my objectives was also to get the local younger generation, with their tuner cars, interested in the car club as well as the car show scene and direct their energy in that direction rather than on the street. All work was done by me with suspension installation help from a friend.

Vintage Car Club of Canada
The Vintage Car Club had its beginnings in 1958, the year of the Centennial of British Columbia. To help celebrate the 100th birthday, some owners of vintage cars organized a tour from Fernie to Victoria. There was so much interest in the event that the participants later formed what is now the Vintage Car Club of Canada. The purpose of the club is to encourage the purchase, preservation, restoration and display of vintage vehicles. We are a family-oriented club with an emphasis on outdoor activities. Members bring friends, pets and children to events. Having a vintage car is not a pre-requisite; just a genuine interest in events associated with the club. For more information contact Gordon Sherwin in Penticton at 250-493-1498. As well, if you are interested in becoming an owner of a vintage car we will certainly assist in your search for that special vehicle.
