REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY
In today’s world, mankind has sown the seeds of
discontent and discord. Due to our own selfishness,
pride, power and greed, the world experiences disaster
after disaster. Yet, for the Christian, there is one
undeniable fact – God is in charge. For the Christian,
Christ came and shed His light in the world of
darkness. It is this Light that is the world’s hope in
time of distress. It is the Christian faith in God that
allows mankind the luxury to find peace and comfort
when all others are grasping at straws to find some
solace that will carry them through the storm. For
over two thousand years, the Christian and their
predecessors, the Jews, have turned to God in faith for
rescue. Today’s Liturgy of the Word reminds all of
mankind that God is and has been there for them
throughout history. All they have to do is turn to . . .

REFLECTIONS ON THE SUNDAY READINGS (continued)
. . . Him and reach out their hands for safety and
comfort.
In today’s first reading taken from the Book of
Job, God makes it patently transparent that He is
in control of everything. Job is tested by God and
refuses to capitulate and forsake his God despite
the challenges God allows him to
experience. The Lord begins the
passage with a hint of theophany
as Job challenges the reason for
the disasters he endures. The
Divine Being reminds Job of God’s
omnipotence and omniscience as
He calls Job to stand and face the
predicaments that are presented
to him. Using storms and the sea,
God portrays Himself as one who
loves and controls everything
with the compassion and the
wisdom of a parent. Job has to
acknowledge that God is cognizant of what is
happening and that He will lead the way. Job just
has to accept the situation and keep the faith.
Likewise, in the Second Letter of Saint Paul to the
Corinthians, Paul continues his discourse on his
own sufferings and faith. The Apostle to the
Gentiles reminds the budding Church of Corinth
that Jesus died once and for all. This converted
persecutor of Christians reflects upon the fact
that through their baptism and conversion, all
Christians have died in the flesh only to be raised
in Christ through his resurrection. Zealously, Paul
preaches that all must not live for themselves;
rather, they are now called to live for Christ in a
new Creation, forsaking the old and the mammon
that it offers. This is the way of agape love – love
that is sacrificial in nature and exemplified by
Christ, Jesus.
Finally, today’s Gospel according to Mark, relates
a theophanic event. In this selection, Jesus is
sleeping in a boat that is being tossed about by
turbulent waves due to a storm at sea. As his boat
and others around him experience a violent and
threatening storm, his disciples panic and are
afraid they will sink and die. Mark explains that
they awake their master and cry out for help. In
turn, Jesus calmly and quickly calms the waters
bringing astonishment to his fearful companions.
They ponder at the astonishing power that Jesus
presents as Christ inquires as to where was their
faith? Using this event, the Gospel reveals Jesus’
Divinity as only God could be master of the
elements.
Today’s Word allows Holy Mother the Church the
opportunity to refresh our own minds of God’s
ability and desire to control and grant safety and
solace to our sinful world. As we witness, the
power of sin in our world, we also witness the
power of God to overcome the darkness and
distress we encounter. Like the apostles, we are
sailing into turbulent waters that threaten to
overpower and destroy us. Sin, the ultimate and
permanent death, surrounds our daily lives. We
have only to turn to Jesus and ask for His
assistance in order to calm the “waters” that
threaten our “boat”. Faith in God, faith in Jesus,
and faith in His Divine Mercy will allow us to die
to ourself and rise in the Lord through His
Paschal Mystery. God is indeed in charge and we
need only our faith in Christ the Lord to endure
whatever comes and to rise to eternal life.
