The beautiful weather is here at last! It is so nice to finally be able to put on sunscreen every day and enjoy the fresh, spring air and the smells of the season. Walks outside with my children to different parks, trips to the beach and time spent by the waterfront always leave me with a smile on my face. I have recently noticed however, that things are not as picture perfect as they might seem. Upon closer inspec-tion of all the places listed above, hazards can be found that would harm adults and children alike. I think our parks and recreation department does an excellent job of taking care of the parks in this city but I think that we as members of the community are slacking a bit. No, of course this isn’t directed at everyone. This isn’t directed at the people who stop to pick up the garbage they see on the beach. It’s directed at the people who leave their trash behind or walk right by broken glass by a swingset. All too often, I find myself picking up garbage that is sitting right beside a garbage can! Pick up after yourselves and keep our beautiful, wa-terfront city clean. How on earth are we going to keep tourists coming back here if we keep messing up the place with old fast food wrappers and other unmention-ables? This stuff is harmful to our health and harmful to the environment. The city has provided us with hun-dreds of trash cans. Let’s use ‘em!

ictoria layhouse etroliaV P P The Tony-Award winning comedy sensation that wowed them on the West End, and still keeps Broadway a buzz, is ready to take Petrolia by storm with gales of laughter and whirlwind funny business. From June 8 to June 26, 39 Steps, Patrick Barlow’s bril-liant comedy adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s famous thriller of the same name, will be onstage at Victoria Playhouse Petrolia and the word on the street is, this is one show not to miss. Based on John Buchanan’s classic novel, 39 Steps, Hitchcock’s 1935 film version is still one of the endur-ing classics of the thriller genre that Hitchcock was so famous for. 39 Steps onstage, brings a new twist to a much beloved film, and the result is a very clever, extremely imaginative, and hugely entertaining piece of live theatre. The story is a classic tale of one man’s flight from wrongful accusation, his pursuit by the law, one exciting adventure after another, and, of course, a little romance to top things off. It all begins one night at the theatre, when our hero, Richard Hannay, is attending a demonstration of the remarkable powers of Mr. Memory. A fight breaks out, shots are fired, and in the ensuing panic, Hannay finds himself holding a frightened Annabella Schmitt. He takes her back to his flat where she tells him she is a spy being chased by assassins out to kill her. She has uncovered a plot to steal British military secrets by an es-pionage agency called “the 39 Steps.” The next morning, Han-nay awakes to find Annabella murdered, himself the suspect and police hot on his trail. “This stage play, 39 Steps, is an affection-ate and terribly funny spoof of the classic murder/thriller film genre that Alfred

Hitchcock was the master of,” says Director Robert More. “It combines clever and ingenious staging, along with a multitude of colourful characters, non-stop ac-tion, and one hilarious moment after another. Of all the shows I’ve directed in the last 10 years, 39 Steps has been the most fun by far. It is a total delight, joy-ous, intriguing, and full of surprises. I can honestly say, without any hesitation whatsoever, that this play is the most inventive piece of theatre to come to VPP ever.” Starring in 39 Steps are playhouse veterans (Too Many Cooks, Confessions of a Dirty Blonde) Jonathan Ellul and (Dads II, Make Me A Match) David Rosser along with newcomers Cara Hunter and Mark Weatherley. “The cast for 39 Steps is magnificent,” says More. “They are all brilliant comic and character actors and the work they do onstage is stunning. With this cast, and this script, I know we’re going to have a hit on our hands.” The creative team for 39 Steps includes: Robert More, Director; Eric Bunnell, Set Designer; Wendy Greenwood, Lighting Designer; Julie McGill, Costume Designer; Thomas Schweitzer, Stage Manager; Scott Spidell, Assistant Stage Manager; and Bethany Redich and Keely Welsh as Apprentice Assistant Stage Manag-ers.

This four piece Death Metal band from Sarnia has all the pieces in place to be a great band. However, as is the case for most bands in this genre the vocals will unfortunately scare away all but the angriest of music lovers. The intri-cacy of the guitar riffs and the apparent tightness of this band can still shine through the screeching vocals so that everyone can appreciate the musicianship of Misfortune. With a healthy 34000+ hits on myspace this band has ob-viously been able to draw lovers of this style of music to their site. Unfortunately, other than being a place to play Misfortunes music, the site gives nothing else of interest to the Misfortune fan.

The Operation M.D. better known as Dr. Rocco and Dr. Dynamite, and even better known as Todd Morse of H20 and Cone McCaslin of Sum 41 are excited to announce the release of their sophomore album Birds + Bee Stings. The new album, featuring 11 new songs, will be released digitally on June 29, 2010 on their own label, Mouth To Mouth Music. The first single Buried At Sea, produced by good friend Ian D’sa of Billy Talent, is being released today! Operation M.D. began as a little side project put togeth-er by bass player Cone McCaslin and guitar player/singer Todd Morse. McCaslin and Morse were destined to find each other and concoct the music that makes them Op-eration M.D. The music is not what you’d expect based on their day job pedigree. It’s like The Violent Femmes getting beaten up by The Hives and making friends with Tom Petty. Their first album We Have An Emergency was released in 2007 and featured two videos for the songs Sayanora and Someone Like You, with both videos directed by Dr. Dinero, a.k.a Steve Jocz of Sum 41. The band was nominated for two CASBY Awards in 2007 and performed live at the awards in Toronto that same year. The band has also contributed a new track We Stand to the charity album called Song for Africa – Rwanda Rises Up. The album will be released on June 22 on Sony. There will also be a documentary that was filmed in Rwanda airing on June 19 on City TV. The album will be available on ITunes.

row aneC J Sarnia’s own Crow Jane is recording again and this time, they’ve kicked up their sound a notch since we last featured them in the December issue of Fix. They’ve taken old favourites that you’ve come to know and love, made them a little more energetic and are trying to in-corporate each band member’s talents more into tracks. This includes the talent of their new drummer of Plume Balloon fame, Tyler Manzon. Tyler can be found in several past issues of Fix and is, in this writer’s opinion, just what Crow Jane needed to be complete and rounds out their sound a little more. “We’ve been working on originals and a few more covers just to mix up the set a bit more,” said frontman Leigh Coltman of the group’s recent endeavours. “We’re trying to get comfortable together,” said Tyler. Everyone has a lot of patience but really things have come together quite quickly.” Tyler has been with the band since April. They’ll be re-recording everything they’ve already done because their

latest work has morphed the sound into a better, tighter, more appropriate sound and songs have changed slightly. “[The song] Devil on My Shoulder was recorded slowly in more of a laid-back way,” said Leigh. “Now it’s re-ally upbeat and we’ve sort of changed the format of the song around a little bit.” Leigh went on to say, “when we started out, we were going for a folksy-bluegrass feel and I think for a while, we sort of took a country turn. We’re definitely back to where we want to be with the bluegrass style right now.”

New tracks as well as the old favourites will be re-recorded starting in July, the band hopes, when one of their band members returns from a work stint up north. “Dan has a studio at his house so we’ll be using that to record our stuff. It’s a lot more economical that way,” said Leigh. “And there’s always a possibility of doing live record-ing as well,” added Tyler. The group is hoping to have an EP available by the fall. There are a few new songs that Leigh and Steve hope to have ready soon and again, re-vamps of old favourites that you can expect to hear on the group’s long-awaited first disc. The band might also do some one shot, one take video work in Leigh’s sunporch/music jam space that we’re hoping to see on Youtube soon. “I think a lot of people want to actually see the band live. It’s a little more raw and I think it could be fun,” voiced Tyler. The band is currently doing most of their jam sessions at Christine’s country farmhouse in the kitchen. “We’re kind of in between the stove and the sink,” said Tyler. “If we’re hungry, we’ve got the fridge right there,” laughed Christine. “The room actually has great acoustics,” Leigh said. The group may record some video there (we hope they do!) or work on a live recording of one of their sessions. Crow Jane is looking into a busking licence so that they can do things like set-up on Canada Day with a hat our or a guitar case open so people can contribute what they

like. The band is also considering doing make-shift last minute shows where they announce a show an hour or a day beforehand and show up at a park for an hour of music. The group was booked all weekend for Artwalk so you would have heard their tunes outside Scotiabank or Blackwater if you were in the area. The band is hosting a benefit show for the Sarnia Mis-sionary Church’s trip to El Salvador in the fall. Marty Oblak, Ainsworth, Natural Disasters and Crow Jane will be playing at The Story on Saturday, June 12 with all funds going to the trip. “18 people from the church are travelling to El Salvador to build 10 to 14 small homes for families,” explained Leigh. “Food, supplies and clothing will also be brought down and donations of are being taken at the church.” One item the group is looking for are pillowcase dresses which are exactly what they sound like. Dresses made out of pillowcases! Hygiene supplies are also in high demand and can be dropped off at the church or at The Story on the night of the concert. There is a list of food that can be donated and members of the community can check with the church to find out what items are needed and for more information on ways you can help with the trip. Melissa McClellandwhy we love

The lovely Melissa McClelland is by far one of the most talented, geniune artists this writer has had the pleasure of listening to in the last decade. Her vintage Americana rock-bluesy-sweet sound sparks recollec-tions of summertimes past. While it’s tricky to put this young lady in a category, the artist’s sound can best be described as sometimes Norah Jones meets Sarah McLachlan and Sarah Harmer with little splashes of country and folk-rock in her notes. After listening to Melissa’s album, you can hear that this woman is play-ful, sincere and that she has a subtle and fun sense of humour. Her humour is happily scattered throughout the album but of course, with it being subtle, you have to listen for it. This writer can just picture Melissa in her fanciest dress-up clothes tossing tiny, bright-coloured petals of wit and whimsy like roses all over the studio. American-born and Canadian-raised, Melissa spent her childhood in Burlington, Ontario. Her career in music blossomed in Toronto and she married her producer and fellow musician, Luke Doucet almost four years ago. Melissa has released four albums, the last three of which her husband produced. Her self-titled debut al-bum Melissa McClelland was released in 2001. Stranded in Suburbia (2004) featured track Rooftop. A few fantastic fan-made videos for this and other songs off this album can be found online. Thumbelina’s One Night Stand hit stores in 2006 with hits Solitary Life and Passenger 24 (watch a live version of this song on the Fix Magazine website in our video section). Passenger 24 won Best Americana Song at the Independent Music Awards. Most recently in 2009, Melissa’s album Victoria Day has floored both critics and fans. Recorded at Canter-bury Music by Jeremy Darby, tracks off Victoria Day prove Melissa’s talent as a gifted song-writer. A collabo-ration with Ron Sexsmith on her track Seasoned Lovers can be heard on Myspace (see the links section at the end of this article). Soft and slow, the song has a humer-ous tone dispite sounding sometimes sad. A new release of Victoria Day’s Brake features Sarah McLachlan for whom Melissa has sung back-up vocals. In this track, however, the tables turn and Sarah’s dis-tinct voice can be heard in the shadows of this mellow, melodious and honest song. Melissa’s husband Luke not only produced this album, he also plays several instru-ments and does back-up vocals throughout. Not only has this artist been invited to sing with Sarah McLachlan and Luke Doucet, she was also asked to sing with Jesse Cook and was the only guest vocal appear-

ance on Blue Rodeo’s lauded Live at Massey Hall in 2008. Quite impressive for someone who is barely 30. Listen on her website to everything you can and then click the “add to cart” button located beside each disc in the Music section. Everyone should own these albums. Several of Melissa’s discs will certainly be wrapped up under this writer’s Christmas tree this year for friends and relatives. Thanks to Six Shooter Records, Melissa’s live version of Passenger 24 can be found on the Fix website in our video section. Your Melissa McClelland fix isn’t over yet! Check back to this issue in the next week to read a Q&A with Melissa.
