About two years a go it was current University of Michigan’s Je’Ron Stokes who made the head-lines as one of the nation’s top prep receivers. The then 5-foot-11,180 pounder was noted for his blazing quickness, elusiveness and agility as a pass-catcher coming out of Northeast High School (Philadel-phia, Pa.) and hauled in dozens of scholarship offers from across the country. Now let’s turn the page to his younger brother Malik, a 6-foot-2, 190 pound quarterback who will spend his final year (2011 season) of high school football as one of Connecticut’s top recruits. Malik Stokes had an impressive senior season (2009) throwing for 1,300 yards, rushing for 500 yards and accounted for 18 scores despite missing 2 games for Northeast High School in Philadelphia, Pa. “I had a good year, but an injury (missed two games) set me back,” said Stokes, who was originally a member of the Class of 2010. “I decided to do a post-graduate year at Taft Prep School in Connecticut to have a better year,” added the 6-foot-1, 190 pound signal-caller now a member of the Class of 2011.

STOKES HAS GREAT SHOWING AT COMBINESTOKES SOLID AT QUARTERBACK

Stokes’ goals for the 2010 season include 3,000 yards passing, 800 yards rushing with more than 30 to-tal touchdowns and a 70 % or more completion percentage. The extra year will allow Stokes to develop even more as a passer much like he has done over the years developing into a spectacular quarterback.“I have a strong will to succeed and the determination to be the best,” said Stokes. I feel I have good work ethic and I put in the neces-sary work that is needed to become the best.”

At the 2010 BigTime Football Showcase at Rutgers this past May, Stokes proved to be THE BEST!Stokes outshined 15 other spec-tacular quarterbacks invited to take part in the event that pits the best against the best.

He displayed impressive footwork, poise, awareness and decision making, a strong arm, legit speed and the ability to throw the deep or short ball with precision.

“I am honored to have been named the quarterback MVP and I greatly appreciate the award because it just affirms the hard work I’ve been putting in,” said Stokes. “The camp was well put together and orga-nized ... there was really great tal-ent as well as coaching out there.”Stokes has heard from a variety of

colleges from across the nation of whom have expressed interest and in some case - placed offers on the table for him.

“I had recent offers to the University of Tennessee and Central Michigan University which were both pulled due to coaching changes,” he said.“I currently have no new offers yet, but lots of schools are extremely interested in me,” Stokes added.

University of South Carolina, UCLA, Oregon, Washington, Pitts-burgh, Ohio State, Boston College, Bowling Green, UConn, Auburn, Northwestern are amongst those schools showing interest..“I visited South Carolina, and have visits set to UCLA, Washington, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, West Vir-ginia, and hopefully Oregon,” said Stokes. So is there any school that stands-out a bit more than others?

“There isn’t a school that stands out as of yet. Just looking for the best fit for me and my family and a school that will give me the fair opportunity to compete for a starting job and to win a National Championship,” he added.

In 2009 Wilmington Charter High School’s running-back Brandon Ross (rising-senior) ran for 1,100 yards and scored 13 touchdowns on 179 attempts. This upcoming fall the state of Delaware recruit for the Class of 2011 plans to top those numbers and do much much more.

“My goals for my senior season are to continue to produce on the field and help lead my team to our first playoff appearance,” said Ross.

Bless with legit quickness, agility, soft hands and moves - the 5-foot-11, 195 pounder has all the skills to accomplish any of his desired goals as he continues to impress collegiate coaches.

“The colleges showing me the most interest is Army, Boston Col-lege, and Rutgers,” Ross stated. “These are the schools who have shown the most interest and who have stayed in contact with me ... I have received an scholarship offer from Army so far.”As far as camps, Ross has a quar-tet of schools he plans on attend-ing.

“I plan on attending camps at Boston College, Maryland, Rutgers, and University of Delaware,” he said. And what does Ross feel are the most appealing characteristics he has to offer colleges?“My speed, acceleration, versatility, and my knack for the big play seems to stand-out about me as a player,” said Ross.In May Ross attended the 2010 BigTime Football Showcase held at Rut-gers University and walked away with the events RB MVP honor.“I feel really good to be honored as MVP at the BigTime Football Show-case,” Ross said, who ran two forty times in 4.45 and 4.41 respectively.

“To be able to not only compete - but to standout among some of the top athletes on the East Coast and beyond, it is a humbling feeling to say the least.”

MONTCLAIR HAS TOP RECEIVERAAMAD BUSH TOPS AT WR

Montclair High School’s (NJ) rising-senior WR/DB Aamad Bush has all the intangibles to be a star player this fall for new coach John Fiore.“I am glad to hear that he is that good ... I have yet to see him play besides on film so this is great to hear,” said new head football coach John Fiore. “It’s great to be aware that I have some players like him ... I am hearing more and more great things about Bush.”At 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, Bush has impressive size to go along with the fluidness found within the boundaries of his 4.5 speed along with some of the more reli-able hands you will find across the region.

At the 2010 BigTime Football Showcase Bush displayed the pre-viously mentioned characteristics along with superb route running as well as the ability to create separa-tion from defenders.Bush spearheaded a sensation group of receivers including juniors Mark Thomas (Thomas Jefferson, NY), Anthony Carrington (Lake-wood, NJ), Ryan Malleck (TE - Point Pleasant Boro, NJ), Jairus Cook (Eleanor Roosevelt, MD), sophomore Danny Cole (Piscat-away, NJ) among others. The group was loaded with speed, size and precise route-running, and

it was Bush who earned the top praise at the May 7, 2010 event.“I feel I did okay , but there is still room for improvement,” said Bush, shined shinned on both sides of the ball for as a receiver and defensive-back Montclair last fall. “I like both positions, but I would rather play receiver at the college level. In 2009 he earned All-Conference and All-County (Essex County) hon-ors as a defensive-back, was tabbed as a Top Performer of The Week on two occasions after catching 15 passes, for 146 yards(1 td) and made 45 tackles, force 3 fumbles and intercepted 4 passes.“I feel that I can make more plays with the ball in my hands as a receiver ... I feel I have great size and awareness on the field,” added Bush, who carries a 2.2 core GPA.“I’m working on getting my grades up right now ... that’s the most impor-tant thing to me right now.”Bush is hearing from a handful of colleges at this time, but this is sure to change after a sensational performance at the BigTime Football Show-case.“UConn, Rutgers, Syracuse, Temple (OFFERED), and Cincinnati are re-cruiting me the most at this time,” said Bush who is the cousin of Iowa’s tight-end J.D. Griggs and New Hampshire bound defensive-back Mal-colm Griggs (both former Piscataway standouts). “Right now UConn is my top school, they’re recruiting me the hardest and have impressed me lot. I went up to visit them and I’ve dealt with the coaches up there more than any other coaches.” said Bush, who attended the Huskies Annual Spring Game earlier this year.

Leading up to the 2010 BigTime Football Showcase, Fort Ham-ilton’s (NY) Ivan Foy was sold on being the next All American defensive-lineman to come out of the Big Apple. That was until the 6-foot-4, 300 pound junior (Class of 2011) took some advice from Recruiting Analyst Chris Mel-vin to attend the showcase as an Offensive-lineman. Foy did just that, as he earned MVP honors at the event and now he has his eyes set on being the next All American Offensive-lineman to represent his state. Last fall, Foy, a rising-senior had an impressive season for the Tigers. The 6-foot-4, 300 pounder domi-nated the opposition from his defensive position (DT and NG) on his way to accumulating 40 tackles, 1.5 sacks, an interception and event scored a touchdown for coach Vincent Laino, who recently retired after 20 years (150-60 record) at the helm. “I feel that I did well ... could have done much better,” Foy stated. “My goals for my senior season are to achieve the highest honor possible and to get an championship for our new coach. Foy attended the BigTime Football Showcase at Rutgers University back on May 7th and put on a show. Two days before the BigTime Foot-ball Showcase Foy called-up Chris

Melvin, talent selector for the event - to inquire about being switched from offense to defense. “I was selected by Mr. Melvin to attend the BigTime Football Showcase as an offensive lineman but I wanted to go as a defensive lineman,” said Foy. “He told me that he projected me as an offensive lineman at the collegiate level and that he wanted me to come at that position although I play on our defensive line at Fort Hamilton ... I’m glad that I attended at that position,” added Foy, who won the events MVP honor for the top offensive-lineman. “Foy has all the tools to be a star ... he is picking-up where former Xaverian High School’s Oday Aboushi left off before heading to play for Virginia,” said Melvin. “He’s tough, confident, mobile and smart … the scary part about Foy is that he is still raw ... has a huge upside and a bright future in his wake.” Since the event Foy’s phone has continued to ring of the hook with col-leges seeking his talents and recruiting sites eager to post stories on him. At the moment, Rutgers and Syracuse are both expressing the most inter-est in Foy.“As of right now - I don’t have any offers ... but I’m sure they’ll be com-ing soon. “If I had to choose a school right now it would be Rutgers. Everything about Rutgers wows me.” Foy has plans on attending a few more camps including stops at Rutgers, Syracuse, Penn State, Temple, and James Madison.

Piscataway, NJ - The usual venue for the Bigtime Football Showcase is the 50 yard line in Rutgers Stadium. But with a new field being installed in Rutgers Stadium and the current bubble facility being collapsed from a storm, the outdoor practice field know as Field E was the stage for the 2010 Bigtime Football Showcase. With the hunger level of the Bigtime Players at an all time high, they would have competed in a parking lot to get their chance to compete with the best.

HANDY WINS KICKER MVPHowell High School’s (NJ) rising-senior Ryan Handy displayed a strong leg along with accuracy and distance on his way to earning the MVP honor.

“It was a great experience for me … I didn’t do my best on kick-offs but I did well punting and on my field goals (who made 5 out of 8 with his furthest cover-ing 47 yards),” said Handy, who also lines-up at WR and DB for the Rebels. “I shanked a 52-yarder a little to the left but overall I was pleased with my per-formance.”

You don’t run across too many defensive-lineman with the athleti-cism that Jackson Memorial High School’s (NJ) Dimitrius Smith pos-sesses. Big (6-2/275), strong, fast and agile are just a few of charac-teristics that come to mind when watching the 2010 BigTime Foot-ball Showcase and 2010 Football Challenge MVP in action. Smith, a rising senior, likes to stay in shape by spending his weekends on the hardwood.“I play AAU basketball on the weekends with Paterson Playaz,” said Smith, who is the younger brother of Denver Nuggets guard JR Smith and the University of Louisville Cardinals guard Chris Smith. “I do this to stay in shape In 2009, Smith made 65 tackles and accounted for 5 sacks after making 75 tackles in 2008.“I played both ways in 2009 as junior ... I made All Conference as an offensive-lineman but I am all defense ... I like to hit people,” said Smith.Although he has been spending the past few months without the pads on his frame, Smith has contin-ued to show his dominance in the sport of football as he attended the 2010 Football Challenge at Giants Stadium in March and the 2010 BigTime Football Showcase this past May at Rutgers.“It felt good going to both events and showing what I can do as a player ... I went to both events with something to prove ... I wanted to go to the events and show that I

was just as good if not better than any other player around the state and region ... even the ones with scholarships offers,” Smith stated.Smith did just that as he dominated in one-on-ones and displayed Mar-vin Austin-like (2006 DL MVP and current University of North Caroli-na All American Defensive Tackle) moves, strength and footwork.“It was more self-motivation for me ... I proved that I was just as good as anyone around ... I proved it at the Challenge and Showcase but I still have a lot to prove this season and at the next level (col-lege),” said Smith, who earned MVP honors at both events.Smith proved a great deal to those in the attendance of both the events and even those who weren’t able to be present.COLLEGE COACHES!Army, UConn, UCF, Boston Col-lege, Penn State, Temple, Buffalo, UNC, Pittsburgh are amongst the schools seeking Smith services.“I feel the events helped me a lot

... they realized that I can play ... I had one coach come in to see me and his eye’s lit up about me winning the MVP’s ... he was very impressed,” said Smith, who car-ries a 3.2 GPA.“Buffalo came in and was with me for a hour ... the coach saw my film and then they offered me ... so did Albany,” added Smith.“I have a ton of Division I AA’s who want to offer me but they said they don’t want to waste their time because all the Division I A’s are coming to get me.” Smith attended Temple’s and UCF’s prospect camps in June and should inherit scholarship offers for his spectacular performances.

Some athletes are great combine performers while some are game sensations, Holy Spirits senior line-backer Anthony Sarao is a combi-nation of the two plus some. At 6-foot-1, 215 pounds, an A aver-age in the classroom, and the abil-ity to lead a defense from lineback-er position - Sarao has attracted colleges from across the county. BUT IS HE REALLY SOLD ON ONE SCHOOL?Sarao has dominated the opposi-tion in actual high school games the same way he has done as a participant of combines across the country. As a junior he made 123 tackles, 11 sacks, 1 interception, 2 recovered fumbles (both returned for scores) and a blocked punt.“I had a good year, but I am work-ing hard to top all those numbers as a senior,” said Sarao. In the beginning of January of 2010 he attended the Army All Ameri-can Combine in Texas and earned linebacker MVP honors and posted a record and combine all-time best 3.8 in the pro-agility.“They couldn’t believe I ran that time, so they made me run it again,” he said. “I ran the same time again.”Following the event Sarao prepared to make another statement at the

2010 BigTime Football Showcase to take place in May but paying a visit to State College, Pennsylvania to take part in the Nike Training Camp.“I went to the event to make an-other statement and to get ready for the Bigtime ... I was confident that I would do well in the drills but with all the talent at linebacker I knew it was going to be hard earn-ing the MVP award,” Sarao. “But I had confidence in myself ... so I knew I was capable of do it.”CONFIDENCE is one of the key-attributes that he brings to table that has drawn in college recruiters from across the country.“Maryland offered me followed by Stanford,” said Sarao. Boston College, Rutgers, Nebraska, Temple, Michigan State and UCLA also offered him.Sarao maintains a 4.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, t hat’s why

Sarao (an academically and ath-letically gifted student-athlete) is a perfect fit for his destined home. “I committed to Stanford ... the school has everything I wanted and needed in a college,” said Sarao.“I’ve received A’s throughout school ... that has always been a goal of mine ... something I plan on continue at Stanford,” he added.“We have 17 commitments already for the Class of 2011 ... we are going to be BALLIN out t here at Stanford.”On May 7, 2010 Sarao attended the BigTime Football Showcase and edged-out Rutgers-bound Quentin Gause (Bishop Kearny, NY) as the events LB MVP.“That event was awesome ... a lot of talent was there,” said Sarao. “One of if not the best event I’ve been to ... it was great ... no com-plaints,” he added. “I would do the BIGTIME over again and again!”

EGG HARBOR’S JOHNSON SHINESSOUTH JERSEY STAR EARNS RESPECT

Former Egg Harbor Township High School star Tejay Johnson (Rutgers-bound - Class of 2010) was one of coach Tony DeRosa’s go-to players during the 2009 season in which the Eagles finished with a 11-1 record.Depending on who you speak with, Class of 2011 defensive-back/receiver/returner Stephan Thomas (rishing-senior) was the player who caused the most havoc for the op-position.As a junior, Thomas accumulated 900 yards of total offense with 11 scores 4 interceptions, and forced 3 fumbles leading the Eagles to a South Jersey Group 4 final (a 14-0 loss to Cherokee).“I have some hefty - yet reachable goals ... I a looking to get 2,000 yards of total offense, at least 5 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and I want to win a championship,” said Thomas, a two-way star who earned first team All Press and sec-ond team All Conference in 2009.“I play multiple positions, but prefer playing defensive-back ... I like to hit people ... I can do that on defense and still have the opportu-nity to score.”On May 7, 2010 - Thomas was one of more than 175 recruits from across the region who took part in the BigTime Football Showcase.Thomas turned in one of the events TOP 40 times (4.45) and was sen-sational in one-on-one and indi-vidual drills.

“That kid is the real deal ... he’s confident, coachable and is a superior athlete ... he was the best DB out of a lot of legit D-backs,” said Defensive-back coach Kris Parker.Thomas, who carries a 3.2 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) was one of 8 MVP winners honored at the end of the showcase.“The BigTime Football Showcase was a great opportunity for me, it was my first combine I’ve ever attended and I won MVP for the defensive-backs ... I loved the competitive vibe at the showcase, Thomas stated.“The event went better then I thought it would ... It boosted my confidence and gave me the op-portunity to display my skills. The event was great, the coaches were very encouraging. The competi-tion was good and I had a load of fun at the showcase. “I carried away confidence from this event ... I even surprised myself with my performance at the show-case.”Since the event Thomas has seen his stock rise amongst the areas TOP prospects when it comes to college recruiters.“Recruiting is beginning to look

good for me, a lot of kids think it (re-cruiting) is annoying, but I am em-bracing the process,” said Thomas.Colleges like Villanova, Louisville, Rutgers, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Col-gate, UMass, Boston College, Iowa, West Point and Temple have all taken notice of Thomas’s talents. “Rutgers and Iowa have shown the most interest in me ... I plan on go-ing to summer camps at Rutgers and Temple,” Thomas delivered.“All the schools are saying the same thing ... all are interested and want me to go to their camp ... but West Point offered me today (5/20/2010) ... it felt great to get the first offer ... I’m just being patient,” said Thomas, who added an offer from Navy a week later.“I’ve been seeing other players get offers and I anticipated to time when I would get my first offer and now the time has come ... a weight has been lifted off my back.”And which college has he had a vi-sion of playing for?“Ever since I was 12-years old I have wanted to be a Florida Gator,” said Thomas.“I am a competitor and I want to play with the best, and right now Florida is the best!
