Want to be a Member of CPC?

On any given Sunday we have families, large and small (sometimes as small as one!), worshipping with us who have never officially joined Covenant. Are you one of those

families? Are you interested in taking the step to become a communicant member? If so, let me know. I would like to schedule a time when a group can get together and

talk about church membership, meet with the session, and join the church.

I have scheduled a couple of these gatherings recently, but the times never seemed to work for those interested in joining. So I thought I’d try this new approach. Let’s see

who is interested and I’ll try to schedule around your schedules! Will that work? Let me know your wishes.

Thanks - Ken

Pittsburgh, PA! Many of you know we have several families who have called, and in fact still do call, Pittsburgh home. I remember my first trip to Pittsburgh. It was the summer of 1977 and Diane and I were traveling east to visit the Presbyterian seminaries at Pittsburgh and Princeton, NJ, trying to determine where I would attend seminary. We were driving northeast through rolling hills toward Pittsburgh on I-279 (now called I-376 as well). We went through a tunnel and, coming out the north side, we suddenly were faced with downtown Pittsburgh. What a sight – the stadium (Three Rivers is where the Pirates and Steelers played then), the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers to form the Ohio River, and downtown Pittsburgh! Wow! Impressive! Why am I mentioning Pittsburgh? Pittsburgh is an important place for the Presbyterian Church (USA) this summer. The 220th General Assembly of the PC(USA) will be meeting there from June 30 through July 7. Nearly 700 commissioners from around the country will gather to debate, discuss, and take action that will affect Presbyterians around the country. There is one particular issue that will indeed be a hot topic and will certainly hit the national news: the definition of marriage. Currently our Book of Order says this about marriage: Marriage is a gift God has given to all humankind for the well-being of the entire

human family. Marriage is a civil contract between a woman and a man. For Christians marriage is a covenant through which a man and a woman are called to live out together before God their lives of discipleship. In a service of Christian marriage a lifelong commitment is made by a woman and a man to each other, publicly witnessed and acknowledged by a community of faith. (W-4.9001)

The General Assembly this summer will hear various overtures that wish to change the definition of marriage in our Book of Order to a civil contract between two people. These overtures would delete every reference to “man and woman” and replace that phrase with “two people.” This is certainly a significant change, to say the least! Overtures to confirm or even strengthen the current statement are also expected. On Sunday, June 24, my sermon title will be “Defining Marriage.” I will be sharing my understanding of how scripture defines marriage as well as sharing with you the results of our session’s discussion on this issue (the elders meet Tuesday, June 19 – this issue will be discussed at that meeting). I hope you can be with us on the 24th. Please be praying for your session as well as me as this issue is discussed and preached. Keep the PC(USA) in your prayers as well as they gather in Pittsburgh. Ken
