If you’ve never visited the Sidney Summer Market, you are missing a wonderful experience. Every Thursday night from early June to early September, Sidney’s Beacon Avenue is transformed into an outdoor market featuring local vendors, artists, music and food. Merchants along Beacon Avenue also participate by keeping their doors open to the public during the market, which contributes significantly to the atmosphere and is an added benefit to shoppers.

The Town of Sidney has always been committed to retaining the Summer Market, and Town Council recognizes

and appreciates that the long-term sustainability of the market is vital to enhancing, promoting and contributing to the economic, social and cultural development of Sidney as a community. We would love to hear from market attendees on what you think will make the market even better. Please send your thoughts to [email protected].

Whether you are a resident of Sidney or a visitor from afar, be sure to keep at least one Thursday night free this summer to visit Sidney’s Summer Market – you won’t be disappointed! For more information (including market start date), visit www.sidney.ca.

The Sidney Fine Art Show, one of B.C.’s premier fine art exhibitions, is celebrating 10 years of showcasing B.C. artists.

Each October, the Mary Winspear Centre is transformed into a world-class gallery, providing both well-known and emerging artists an opportunity to showcase their work. This year the show will be held from October 12th to 14th, attracting thousands of visitors to Sidney and the Saanich Peninsula.

Artists submit their work for adjudication in September, with three qualified jurors judging over 1,200 pieces of artwork to select approximately 350 pieces for the show.

The fine art show, which is run by the Community Arts Council of the Saanich Peninsula (CACSP), is not for profit and is run totally by volunteers – more than 300 volunteers will work over 4,000 hours on the show.

The Sidney Fine Art Show continues to be especially important to the local art community. Not only do artists receive 80% of their sales revenue, but any surplus is used by the CACSP in support of its many diverse programs. This contribution enables the CACSP to continue many of its programs, including the ArtSea Festival, summer children’s and senior’s art classes and the First Nations fall show, as well as provide grants to member groups and to operate the Tulista Arts Centre.

Artists interested in participating should complete the call to artists form and submit it by July 13th.

The event is also an opportunity for volunteers to be involved in all stages of the process, from art intake to operation of the show.

For further information and applications for artists and volunteers, visit www.sidneyfineartshow.com.

The ever popular Spring Saanich Peninsula Artists' Studio Tour will take place Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A very colourful brochure (with studio locations/map) is available in the Peninsula’s Coffee Shops at various stores in Sidney and at Michell Bros. Farm at Island View Road. Each of the 26 studios/venues has a tasteful representative picture of what visitors can expect. The brochure/map is also available online at www.cacsp.com under “events.”

Along with returning artists to the Tour, we have several new artists, which always makes these Studio Tours fresh and exciting. The Community Arts Council, in the Tulista Park Arts Centre, is opening their Summer Artisans Show with this Studio Tour. The Centre

proves to be a favourite Tour destination because of the wide variety of arts and crafts by local artists. There is a tremendous variety of arts involved in this Tour, including a wide selection of award-winning painters, fabric arts, paper arts, glass art and jewelry, several well-known bronze artists and splendid wood turnings. Chris Paul will be showing his fine Coast Salish art works in several mediums. Five highly talented artists will be showing and demonstrating at the wonderful Muse Winery – drop by for a large taste of art and small taste of great wines. Again this Tour, CACSP is happy to have remarkable glass artist Christopher Windsor – also in a winery at De Vine Vineyards.

The Artists’ Studio Tour, sponsored and organized by The Community Arts Council, is provided free to the public so that the artists on our wonderful part of the Island can show and demonstrate just what and how they do what they do to make the area a better place to visit and live.

We acknowledge the support of the Town of Sidney, the Municipality of Central Saanich, the District of North Saanich and the Province of BC through BC Arts Council.
