Summer is here at last and the calendar is full of fun acvies at the Club. The

Cruisers are over at Granary Creek off the Wye River for the weekend, the Bermuda Ocean Race is busy geng ready for the start on June 8 aer one of our signature pares the night before, the Spring Collion. But the month starts off with one event that I am very proud off, the Leukemia Cup Regaa.

This is the 20th me that EYC has been privileged to assist in this event. Since its humble beginnings in 1993 this event has grown from Annapolis harbor to become a naonwide charity regaa. There are now 47 Leukemia Cup Regaas run around the country and over $33 Million has been raised to fight blood related cancers. Quite an accomplishment.

There is another reason that we support this effort. One of our founders, Rob Ladd, was stricken with Leukemia two years ago. He has fought a courageous bale and is finally on the road to recovery. The Club has adopted “Team

Rob Ladd” as our fund raising tool to do our part. We have set a goal of raising $6,000, which equates to $10 each vong member of the Club. Now each of us can afford to make a $10 tax-deducble donaon to this very worthwhile cause. So far we have raised over $1,500. While this is notable we sll have a long way to go. So please take this opportunity to click on hp://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/robladd/lcr and make that $10 donaon. We have unl June 2 to make a difference.

June also sees our first “Music on the Deck” when the Unified Jazz Ensemble make a return for a Jazz Brunch to celebrate Father’s Day a lile early on June 10. Make those reservaons now. Not to be outdone, our regular Music on the Deck/Dog Day Aernoon shows up on the following Sunday, June 17, aernoon to rock the house from 4 to 7 p.m. These events are always fun so make your plans now to aend.

Check out the calendar for lots of specials. Have you tried the Wednesday

night Italian and half price wine dinners or the Late Night Friday Happy Hour and Small Plate event?

Lots going on so stop by and get in on the acon.

The Board was very sorry to have to accept the resignaon of Rod Tomlinson as chair of the Building and Grounds Commiee. Rod has spent years keeping the old clubhouse going using bailing wire and duct tape. We would have been lost without his efforts. He saved the Club untold $$$$$ using his MacGyver-like skills to repair all manner of things. Rod, thanks you for a job well done.

As Rod steps down, Tom Mullan has agreed to take over Buildings and Grounds. This is the perfect me to transion to the new clubhouse. Rather than repairing broken air condioners, Tom’s task will be to develop and implement maintenance schedules that will keep things in p top shape.

Commodore Carey Kirk was injured in a fall in the Clubhouse. Carey has been the principal players in the design of the new Clubhouse. He was leading a tour of the renovated building for officers of the bank when a ladder he was on slid and threw him to the floor. I am happy to report that Carey is resng comfortably at home and should be back at his favorite Club in the not too distant future. Please feel free to drop Carey a line of encouragement at [email protected].

You will recall that I reviewed a potenal issue of a cash flow crunch in June and July due to the rapid pace of construcon in the May Commodore’s Corner. I am pleased to advise that the Severn Savings Bank has agreed to extend the Club a bridge loan to get us through this period so that construcon can proceed at the current pace. I do want to thank several of the members who stepped up and offered to lend the Club the funds necessary, but the Board felt that the best course of acon was to use the bank’s funds rather than our members’ savings. You guys are the best!

Well, the pace of construcon connues to amaze me. The roof is on and the fire escapes are in, along with most of the mechanical systems. The electricians are busy at work wiring the place and the plumbers are plain plumbed out. You can watch all of this acvity on the web cam so join the rest of us sidewalk superintendents and follow the fun.

Let me cover one rumor that keeps popping its head up. I keep hearing that the Club does not have all of the permits needed to complete construcon. This is untrue. We have all permits for construcon and grading need to complete the building. The one item that is sll outstanding is the permit for the hood system in the kitchen and we only applied for that last week. So all is on schedule. Our owner’s representave and the crew from Brown Construcon are hard at work making sure that all of our bases are covered and that we have a fantasc new home to move into.

You noce that I did not say when we will move into the Clubhouse. That is because you can sll buy into the 50/50 pool to guess when we receive the final Occupancy Permit from the City. See the bartender. They will be happy to sell you a cket.

Before I go, let me confirm another rumor. According to the Membership Commiee we are about to establish a new waing list. Ramzi, Lynn and the rest of the Commiee have done a wonderful job is filling our ranks and geng us back on track. Thank you all. We appreciate all that you do.

That wraps it up for another month. You belong to one of the greatest Clubs around. Remember what makes the Club so great is not the buildings or the trailers but the people. So come on down and join your friends on the deck.

STEP UP FOREYC:

JOIN TEAM

ROB LADD

As many of you know, EYC Member #5, Rob Ladd, has been fighng leukemia for the last two years. The good news is that he is now on his way to a full recovery. Rob was one of the founders of EYC and has always been there to support the Club.

Commodore Rick Jackson has set up Team Rob Ladd in Rob’s honor, as the representave of our club, to raise funds in the off-water compeon for this year’s Leukemia Cup.

The team needs your contribuons by June 2 to do Rob and EYC proud in the fund raising race.

If each EYC member contributes just $10, we can achieve an impressive result for this year’s Leukemia Cup. Make your tax-deducble contribuon online at hp://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/robladd/lcr, or leave a check payable to Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the Commodore’s mailbox in the “conference room” trailer. Thank you.

Let the Fun Shine On!

May kicked in with the Supermoon on Saturday, May 5, and the first of two jewels in the Triple Crown for “I’ll Have Another.” The next weekend a terrific Mother’s Day brunch was further highlighted by our Blessing of the Fleet with our favorites Rev. Jeff Paulson and bagpiper Randy Welsh. With the dry dock storage off site, the extra boles of “Holy Water to Go” were apropos.

The unofficial summer start is Memorial Day Weekend (official summer is Wednesday, June 20), but no Blue Angels this year. Hopefully we can watch them from our new decking in 2013!

Hey, the Club is under roof! Well, the shingles are stacked on the roof... The 50/50 raffle for guessmang the final Use and Occupancy Permit date is coming to a close. Chances are $5 each and proceeds will be split between the winner(s) and the Club for our re-opening party! (If no one gets the exact date, it is the next date of the U & O.)

Fathers’ Day is Sunday the 17th with the start of Music on the Deck and Dog Days! Bring your family and furry friends for socializing and yappy hour!

Have you seen what Larry is creang in our “kitchen”? Best to take advantage of Monday night Date Night (easy to get a sier with school being let out) and Italian specials on Wednesday.

All are welcome to join in with planning a great Club experience. The House Commiee is involved in many aspects and we look forward to new ideas and talents! Come play with us - our next meeng is Wednesday, June 6, at 6 p.m. at Juanitaville!

CRUISE NEWSBob Arias

Our first raup of the season occurred May 5-6 in the Rhode River. About a dozen boats came for a pot-luck appezer party, including a number of “new” cruisers. Thanks to Bill and Ann Sieling for leng us use their Pilgrim as a party barge, and to everyone else for not spilling any wine on their new inside boat cushions and not dropping food on deck. We had three full bags of trash, so you know it was a good party. Thanks also to Paul and Judy Chaerton for rescuing some “new” cruisers with engine problems.

Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28) was the annual Cruise to Granary Creek. We’re making some changes this year, so we call it “Wye River 2.0.” Full report next month.

Aenon “recovering racers!” Don’t

forget that EYC hosts the annual Leukemia Cup regaa on Saturday, June 2. Enter the “Leukemia Class” for “boats that don’t normally race,” which describes us perfectly. We even get our own course around government marks, rather than windward/leeward stuff the rock stars prefer. Last year, we had at least five EYC cruisers racing. Here’s your chance to invite some addional crew, have some low-key fun without comming to a race schedule, aend pares at AYC (!) and EYC, and raise money for a good cause. New this year on the same day will be a Power Cruisers Event, a “Predicted Log” contest similar to a road rally. See hp://www.leukemiacupmd.org for more informaon.

June 14-18 OpSail 2012 in Balmore. Tall ships from around the world, US Navy warships, fireworks, concerts, plus the

Blue Angels, all to commemorate the War of 1812. This will very popular, so make your marina reservaons early! Most EYC Cruisers will be staying at Henderson’s Wharf in Fells Point (410-732-1049) Thursday through Sunday, but we will be having at least one get-together wherever you choose. For more info, see www.starspangled200.com. Contact Rob Greve for more informaon (410 990 1642 or [email protected]).

Plans are not yet firm for another cruise in June. Watch your email and the website.

Beginning Monday, July 2, and running through Friday, July 6, will be a five-day Fourth of July Cruise, otherwise known as “the Fireworks Cruise.” This me, we’re heading north to Chestertown, where we have arranged to stay at the Chester River Yacht Club and join them for a July Fourth picnic. Feel free to join the cruise at any me, as we’ll generally be less than a day away, even by sailboat! Coordinators are Tom Baugher and Dorothy Jagin on their Mainship trawler (410 280 1478, 443 223 0982 mobile, [email protected] )

Ahoy, EYC Maes – early sounding for this year’s Pirates and Wenches Fantasy Weekend at Rock Hall, MD! This fun-filled event is slated for August 10 - 12, 2012, so mark your calendars, and if you want to reserve a slip or mooring, we suggest contacng Swan Creek Marina at 410-639-7813 ASAP. There is also anchoring in Swan Creek and/or other marinas available as well as the opon to drive over to Rock Hall for the day. More details will be forthcoming closer to the date, but if you have any quesons please feel free to call cruise coordinators Ron and Dawn Hughes at 443-994-7000 by phone or by email at [email protected]. You can also find more specifics at the website: hp://rockhallpirates.com to get a feel for the myriad acvies scheduled for all ages. Aaargh!

Remember, every Thursday is “cruisers’ night” at the club. Just look for the long table, and join us for dinner. This is an excellent way to set up impromptu weekend ra-ups, get extra crew, or get yourself invited onto someone else’s boat.

COME JOIN US FOR THE START OF THE 2012 BOR ON

FRIDAY JUNE 8.Hey, you know you won’t get any

work done in the office anyway and the lawn can wait unl the weekend. Let’s give the fleet a proper Eastport Yacht Club send-off.

The fleet, including more than 30 heading for the Onion Patch, will parade around the Annapolis Harbor starng at noon. The first boat in the parade will feature Hal the Piper on Lee McMichael’s boat, Sister Mary Catherine. The fleet will follow, dressed for the parade.

The parade also will include the Race Commiee boat, Last Dance, thanks to Anne and Bill Sieling who have performed this duty for many years.

Two more EYC members’ boats will be part of the BOR fleet. Accommodang our sponsors and policians will be Andy and Amanda Fegley’s boat YES, and Ed Wells’ boat Oceolo. Once again this shows the generous volunteer spirit and support of EYC members.

The starng sequence is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Severn River.

If the troops just can’t get it together on a boat then come to the waterfront to send the racers off with a big wave, flags, hands, horns and/or whistle. And don’t forget to follow the fleet on our website: www.bermudaoceanrace.com.

The Annapolis Naonal Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regaa was held on May 4-6. EYC ran the course that included the following classes: J/80, J/105, Tartan 10 and Viper 640. This proved to be a challenging event due to the condions but the race commiee again did an awesome job. Everyone dodged a storm on Friday, had three races on Saturday and one more on Sunday before the wind took a rest. Thanks to PRO Sharon Hadsell and all the many volunteers that came out to help.

The Friday Night Beer Cans started on May 11. The Race Commiee had a few challenges on the first night but have things worked out for the future races. The new finish out on the dock proved to be a lile challenging but that has been worked out as well with a few changes to the Sailing Instrucons. This is a great way to learn race management without having to give up an enre weekend or day so please sign up using the online signup. For all you experienced PROs, please remember that we’ll want to make sure you come out for at least one Friday night as the Deputy PRO. Please let Thornell Jones know at jones@aglobal.net if you have any quesons.

On May 19, EYC hosted the start of the Elf Classic Regaa. The event is organized by the Classic Yacht Restoraon Guild to recreate yacht racing of the 1880s when the races began on shore, included the row to the boat on mooring or anchor, making sail and reversing the process at the finish, in this case signing the race log at the Tolchester Bandstand on the grounds of the Chesapeake Bay Marime Museum. Hopefully you were able to see some of these classic yachts in front of EYC.

Our next event is the 20th Annual Leukemia Cup Regaa, scheduled for June 2. This is a great charity event that has been a huge success and EYC has been a founder of the regaa and a strong supporter. EYC will run the race commiee, with AYC assisng on the other course.

The regaa starts with the Leukemia

Cup Regaa Summer Gala & Aucon at AYC the night before. On Saturday there will be more than 15 PHRF and one design classes on race courses, a 1st annual predicted log race and the J/80 fun race. The local J/80 fleet (which includes many EYC members) will take local paents out for a fun race so they can enjoy a day on the water as well.

This is all followed by a great party aer the race at EYC. If you can’t race, come join the fesvies and support a good cause. If you would like to sign up for race commiee, please use the online sign up or send an email to race.commi[email protected].

On June 8 is the start of the Bermuda Ocean Race hosted by Eastport Yacht Club. Thanks to Mary Ann DeGraw, BOR Chair. This race is held every two years and goes from Annapolis to Bermuda. There are many seminars leading up the race to make sure the racers and boats are as prepared as well. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and they will have a great sail over.

We are looking for volunteers to help out with other aspects of race commiee – no experience necessary! We are looking for people to help with things such as tracking finances, coordinang boats and regaas, etc. If you’re interested in geng involved, please let me know and we’ll definitely be able to find a way for you to help out!

This year we plan to conduct some addional sessions throughout the season. Watch for some upcoming sessions being planned on Scoring, GPS and Safety. If you are not on the RC distribuon list, please send a note to: race.commi[email protected].

All of our regaas and training events are set up for online sign-up. To parcipate is easy and just a couple clicks away. So…how do I volunteer or sign up? Go to the EYC, Racing, EYC RC page and click on the link to volunteer.

The next RC meeng will be Monday, June 11, at 7 p.m. at EYC. Hope to see you there!

JUNIOR FLEETHolly O’Hare

May was a busy month for Junior Fleet. First came the arrival of the new floang dock. Thanks to Gavin O’Hare, Jeff Borland, and Rob Rowlands for its smooth arrival.

Special thanks to all our volunteers who moved our fleet of 18 boats back to the club and Fools with Tools for the fabulous picnic tables, ramp, and deck repairs. Please enjoy the new tables and the view from the hill whenever classes are not in session. And … kudos to Mike Krissoff for lending out his property for the safe storage of our fleet throughout the winter.

There is sll lots of work to be done before classes start on June 25. If you have a special skills and can pitch in please let us know.

To date we sll have room in several of our classes. Be sure to check out the club website under Junior Fleet for informaon. Classes are open to members’ and nomembers’ children ages 5-15 including adult sailing.

Our staff arrives on June 18. Please welcome them and show them around the club. First session classes begin on June 25. Please be aware of the drop off and pick up in the main parking lot. Cars will be entering the drop off/pick up area throughout the day Monday through Friday ll the end of July. Hopefully this will be a smooth transion with lile disrupon to the club.

As always the Junior Fleet would like to thank the membership for all its support. We look forward to another great summer of learn-to-sail.

Safe sailing!

SHARE YOUR EYC MEMORIES!EYC needs your memories. As we go forward in the

rebuilding of our clubhouse we also need to look back and remember our history and how special this club has been to each one of us. Our members are really a family and our support of each other is invaluable.

The Long Range Planning Commiee is working on a personalized history of the club that could turn into a book or a documentary. We would love to have your stories of what the club has meant to you: a one-page story of things funny, sad, adventurous, romanc, silly, stupid, kind – with pictures, if possible.

We are hoping to put some of these things in the me capsule so please respond in a mely fashion to Robin Allison (Member #12), [email protected]. We really appreciate your help in this fun project.

During the late 1950’s, I served for the best part of 4 years as a Quartermaster in the US Navy destroyer KENNETH D. BAILEY with a home port of Newport, Rhode Island. If a person had to serve in the Armed Forces, such a berth was, to me, delighul duty.

During June of 1956 we proceeded to Annapolis to embark USNA Midshipmen for their Summer Cruise.

There were a total of 16 Destroyers and two Cruisers all on the same mission, and we all came to anchor in designated posions at Annapolis Roads off the mouth of the Severn River. We later connected up with the Baleship WISCONSIN. To me, it was quite a sight to see all of these ships in the anchorage.

The cruise took us across the Atlanc to Europe and we were constantly involved with drills, excercises and gunnery pracce intended to accustom the midshipmen to shipboard roune and administraon, and ships’ systems, evoluons and life at sea in a U. S. Naval Vessel. We arrived at the English Channel

and the fleet scaered to several ports for liberty: Portsmouth, Hamburg, Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen. Then back across the Atlanc to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and then return to Annapolis to disembark the Misdshipmen.

When I menoned all this to longme EYC Member Ken Malley, Admiral US Navy Rered, he allowed as how he was then a Midshipman and was along on this cruise and then he told me that there were a total of five EYC members who were then Midshipmen and were involved with this Cruise.

They were: Ken Malley, Class of 1957; Richard Emme, Class of 1957; Michael Kelly, Class of 1957; Rod Tomlinson, Class of 1959; and Merf Moerschel, Class of 1960.

Although this all happened 56 years ago, it is all sll vivid in my mind with the signal flags snapping in the breeze, the flashing signal lights, the shining brass work about the ships’ bridges and the ships underway in various formaons on the open ocean and then the Liberty Ports of Hamburg and Oslo.
