BewdleyTown put in a superb all round performance to lift theWorcestershire Senior Urnfor the second year in a row. From the kick off both teams were giving their all and whilstBewdley looked the classier outfit Alvechurch just edged it in terms of possession and theymade that possession pay taking the lead after 15 minutes. The Alvechurch lead lasted lessthan two minutes. A rocket from CraigWebb found the back of the net to level the score.Webby’s celebrations demonstrated that he has a promising career as a Morris Dancer when

his foot balling days are over.Bewdley looked dangerous goingforward and just five minutes latertook the lead; a pin point crossfound the head of Dan Flowerswho gratefully put the ball in theback of the net. Just when youthought things couldn’t get anybetter, they did.

Ten minutes from the end of thefirst half a Richard Burgess cornerfound the head of CaptainFantastic, SeanWright, and hepowered the ball into the back of

the net. Half time and Bewdley went in3-1 up.As might be expected Alvechurch came out in the second half determined to reducethe deficit. Whilst they had the majority of possession they failed to create any clear cutchances thanks to some superb Bewdley defending.

Once again when Bewdley did attack they looked dangerous. Second half sub Russ Godfreywith virtually his first touch of the ball sent over a cross that had the goalkeeper scramblingto get it out from under his crossbar. Godfrey had another chance but put his shot wide.Richard Burgess did find the back of the net again but had his effort disallowed for a foul onthe goalkeeper.Alvechurch continued topile on the pressure but things took aturn for the worse for them whenthey had a player sent off in the lastfive minutes for a second bookableoffence. Credit to them they kepttrying and did pull a goal back withvirtually the last kick of the game.Immediately after the restart the refblew his whistle for full time and thecelebrations began. Commiserationsto Alvechurch - they never gave upand took a full part in a very goodgame.

Town Triumph!Town Triumph!

June – my favourite month. The days start at the crack of dawn (if yousee what I mean), the weather is glorious (oh, come on! It happens) andnature has its fresh-out-of-the-bag newness. My garden is jumping upand down, shouting “Look at me! Look at me! and my early morningwalks are enlivened with crowd noises from sundry birds, among which Ireliably only recognise cuckoos.

Funnily enough, I had occasion to trawl through my box of past maga-zines yesterday in search of a past contribution, and discovered that Iwrote something horribly similar about the month in June 2010, whichmakes me boring, consistent and repetitive. Or as a friend said,“As dullas a daisy”. She is prone to splendid slips of the tongue; this morning shecame out with “I remember cutting my feet on jobs like that”. A pause. “Or do I meanfinding my teeth?” I did know what she meant. Eventually.

It’s all part of that pleasure in words that I hope hasn’t been squashed by the brevity ofTwitter, Facebook and the rest. It may be that they are actually reinvigorating the language bymaking the sender of terse messages rethink what they say. Or is it just making those samewriters more reliant on a stock of clichéd initials that clog up everyday speech as well?Discuss.

Alternatively, read the real printed words in the magazine then go and admire our lovelytown in its summer finery and enjoy all the excitement of Jubilee month.

We are going to feature lots about the Jubilee in next month’s magazine together with what Iknow will be terrific photos of all the excitement in our town.

In fact I think it’s as plain as death and taxes. Or sure as day.

TheCivic Society will have a stall by the Guild Hall with a range of different cherries for peopleto see and taste; some old varieties, locally grown (depending upon weather conditions),others from further afield, and also some modern sorts. It is hoped to display named varieties (last year we showed 23 kinds), and possibly attempt identification of fruits peoplebring along for comparison. The earliest cherries should be ripe at this time and it wouldbe exciting if unfamiliar old and local fruits come to light. In addition it is hoped to have container grown trees of some cherry varieties for sale.

Bewdley Cherry Fair was traditionally on St. Anne's Day, 23rd July, and to mark this the Museum is holding a Fair during the weekend of 28th - 29th July. By this time the later cherries should be ready.

A Fair was set up with the Edward IV Charter of 1472. There is no mention of cherries inthe charter, but the date is the nearest of the ancient fair days to the cherry season. Sothis date seems to have become a Cherry Fair; when or how we do not know.

In recent years there has been much interest in old apple varieties. The discovery and rescue of old varieties of cherry is equally important, but is neglected. One, called Carnation (a Duke or hybrid of sweet and acid types), was first named by John Rea, the famous nurseryman at Kinlet in 1665. There are about 350 varieties listed and many were formerly grown around Bewdley making a significant contribution to the local economy. An attempt is being made to find and propagate what still remains of a dwindling heritage.Brian Stephens

"History is Bunk" (Or is it?)

I've enjoyed history for a long time, both in and outof education. A friend from college once said shecouldn't understand why people enthused abouthistory as it had no relevance to her life in thepresent.

In a way, no, a bunch of dead people and eventslong gone have no relevance to your current existence.

However if you take the time to find out it becomes clear that history is not only in the pastbut also in the present; consider that income tax was originally introduced as a temporaryfundraising measure by William Pitt the Younger, and that I accompanied my husband to thepolling station last Thursday thanks to tireless campaigning by a group of determined women.I can never contemplate not voting without hearing the thunder of horses' hooves in myhead.

Your local library has a wide selection of historical books, ranging from ancient civilisations tomore recent times. There's a lot about humankind that many people never know becausethey think history is boring; which is a shame, because some of it can be quite saucy in parts! And there are also plenty of 'Horrible Histories' books for the kids.

Give history a chance – you've got nothing to lose and you might learn something new. You might even enjoy yourself!

There has been concern expressed by local residents over the possibility of Bewdley MedicalCentre developing a new facility outside of the economic centre of the Town.

Bewdley Medical Centre wishes to develop a 21st Century facility that will deliver modern, high quality medical facilities for the people of Bewdley which is not possible on its currentconstrained site. The purpose the development is to improve the medical service offered tothe local community.

Dr Tamplin of Bewdley Medical Centre says, “We understand that our local community havegenuine concerns about the medical centre possibly moving out of the town centre. TheDoctors and the practice wants to stay in the heart of Bewdley if at all possible. However, wehave to ensure that our patients have access to facilities that enable us to provide them withthe best care. We are working closely with the District Council to explore every option forthe practice to be able to stay in the centre of Bewdley.”

Cllr John Campion, Leader of Wyre Forest District Council says, “The District Council and Ifully support the Doctors’ ambitions to provide a modern fit for purpose medical facility forlocal residents. The District Council is working closely with Bewdley Medical Centre lookingat sites in the heart of Bewdley which would allow them to build a modern, fit for purposemedical centre to serve our local community. These discussions I hope will avert the needfor the practice to consider an out of town centre site for its new facility.”

As the discussions are at an early stage there is little detail as to what any proposal wouldlook like for the medical centre to develop a new centre in Bewdley. There will be a full public consultation later in the year before any decisions are made.

Bewdley Primary School’s Olympic GardenThe pupils at Bewdley Primary School have been getting into the Olympic Spirit with acompetition to combine art, sport and horticulture. The children were given the challengeof designing an Olympic Garden which will transform an unused patch of grass within theschool grounds and help the school to commemorate the 2012 Olympics.

Over 200 children battled to win the prizes of gardening equipment and see their designbecome reality. The children created miniature gardens, models and drawings to convey theOlympic values and what it means to them to have the event in this country.

The overall winner of the competition was Key Stage One pupil Billy Wooldridge andprizes were also awarded to Ava Freeman, Adam Ram, Jessica Holden and Molly Smith.

To kick start the gardening, a team of children, parents and staff worked together to dig upthe area which is now ready for the children to transform in to Billy’s Olympic Garden vi-sion.

‘The children worked really hard to produce some fantastic designs and we cant wait tosee the garden in bloom this summer.’

Bewdley Cricket Club

It’s that time of year again for the cricket season to begin. This year however the club started a bit earlier than normal as a result of a

generous award from Sport England. The club was given an award of £44000 from the In-spired Facilities programme and this was used to

refurbish the clubhouse and grounds. The official presentation was on Saturday 24thMarch where the cheque was handed over to the club President, Charlie Combes, by

Mark Garnier MP and Ms Anne Rippon from Sport England.

Work began in late January with numerous workmen both professional and volunteersvisiting the site to demolish the existing parts of the club that had not seen a sledge ham-

mer since 1976!!

Here are some of the highlights of our new clubhouse.

And now we want all the folk ofBewdley to know that the “Jewel”

that is Bewdley Cricket Club is evenmore sparkling than ever and is open

most evenings and every weekend. The club would really ap-preciate as many people as possible

to join them in supporting their teams. This seasonhas already started with its first game

being the Simon Higgs MemorialPresidents XI v Chairman’s XI match, once again won by the Chairman.

So if you are looking for somewhere to while away a pleasant evening or weekend, or ifyou are walking by the river and see us playing please take a detour and drop in and see whatis happening at Bewdley Cricket Club, Lower Park, off High Street, Bewdley. Everyone is wel-come to come down and support the teams over the coming months and to view our shiny

Pub and club Training with PiccolosIt's the time of year again for the annual pub and club regattaorganised by Bewdley Rowing Club. Piccolos entered a crewlast year for the first time and it was a really enjoyable day..butvery hard work.

None of us had rowed before, so it was a great experience forus all. So we've signed up again; some may reckon we’re suckersfor punishment!

We've had a delay to the start of training with the river beingso high, so we're only taking to the water this week. At least all competitors will be in thesame boat -excuse the pun.

We have six, one hour sessions on the river with a dedicated coach from the rowing cluband without this we would not stand a chance, as the technique involved in rowing is verycomplex. I'm hoping it's like riding a bike and it will all come back to us, but I'm not so sure!

So the next few weeks will be busy trying to fit in our training sessions, especially with theeighty other crews that have also entered. Tonight we venture out for the first time andguess what? It's raining! Still, dedication will get us through, together with our waterproofs.

So we'll hopefully see you all on the 2nd June cheering all crews on. It's a great day out andalways well supported.

“Let the rowing begin..' Rachael, Piccolos

Bewdley Primary children

raise £160 for Water Aid

Children at Bewdley Primary School organised abring and buy sale at school and raised £160 forWater Aid.

Years 5 & 6 children have been learning aboutpeople that do not have clean sanitary conditions which in turn causes disease and loss oflives.

The children decided they wanted to help in some way and organised a cake, toy, gift andbook sale. They designed posters to promote the sale and made cakes for children and parents to buy. They also brought to school toys and books they no longer wanted.

Rachel Walter, Year 5 & 6 teacher said ‘The children came up with the idea of a sale and organised it all themselves, they worked really hard – well done!’

Tails of a Veterinary Practice– life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat

Hi Everyone,

My humans are all very busy at present finalising plans for theirentry into the Bewdley carnival. I am planning on attending so make sure you look outfor me in the parade! My human Jayne has also been kept busylooking after her chicks which hatched at the end of April. Theyhave been growing up fast and are keeping her busy deliveringfood and making sure they are very well looked after. Thankfully, she still finds time to give me my daily cuddle. I have also beenable to find some nice warm patches of sun to curl up in overthe last few weeks, so I am hoping that summer is well on its

way. I have to admit I am not a big fan of water unless it is in my drinking bowl.

My humans have asked me to pass on thanks to all who have supported the Bewdley Birdscampaign. There has been a great uptake of the food, so our river birds are now much betternourished and swan rescue have received some much needed funding to continue their workcaring for sick and injured waterfowl.

More from me again next month, Gavin

123456 each pair of bells changes place (1 with 2, 3 with 4, 5 with 6)214365 the two inside pairs change places (1 with 4, 6 with 3)241635 this process is repeat – each pair swaps426153 inside pairs swap462513 all pairs645231 inside pairs654321 all pairs563412 inside pairs536142351624315264132546123456 until the bells come back into rounds

On Bewdley bells this sequence takes less that one minute and is repeated several times. However, this produces only twelve different changes. On six bells there are 720 (6! forthe mathematical) different changes and so this method of producing them needs to bemodified.

One way of doing this is to ring until the last but one change above (132546) and then instead of all three pairs of bells swapping places only the last two (2 and 5, 4 and 6 do so)with the following result.

132546 followed by 132564

This happens when the treble bell (1) is at the front (leading). The whole process is thenrepeated, to produce rounds (123456) after 60 changes. Only another 660 to go.

To produce the remaining changes, the conductor calls instructions at particular pointswhen the treble is leading, so that what is shown above is varied. There are two possiblecalls, "bob" and "single" and they have the effects shown.

bob single

132546 2 and 3, 4 and 6 swap 132546 only 4 and 6 swap

123546 132546

By using these calls at the correct times during ringing, the conductor can arrange to produce all 720 changes once and once only, in what is known as an extent.

The method described here is Plain Bob, and when rung on six bells, as shown here, it is referred to as Plain Bob Minor.

Another Day at the Charity ShopIt’s Wednesday and our first customer is Pat. She always pops in before her Keep Fit class. In the short time she is here, Kemp Shop descends into utter chaos. She even helped two Volunteers dress our male mannequin! The window never looked so good!!

Mrs E lives just over the bridge and pops in most days with her shopping trolley in tow. It’s a rare occurrence for her to go out without making a purchase. Thankyou Mrs E!

Then there is lovely Jane who visits with her Mum sometimes, but if she comes alone thenheaven help her credit card! Further afield we get lots of visitors who are also loyal to KEMP.Pete and Julie come every week from the Black Country (he looks just like “Del Boy”) and always has a funny tale to tell. Maybe he should be on television too?

“Pink Mary” arrives, and if there are any children in the shop she will invariably give them 50pto spend here, have a natter then carry on with her dailyduties.

Dawn and Dave are from Birmingham and have a vanhere. When they pop in we usually put the world torights….We could run the country from here, you know!

Thank you all again for all the wonderful donations youcontinue to bring to the KEMP Shop. We are always astounded by your generosity!

Dawn

“Anything can become vicious if you push it enough…”

On a warm, calm day back in April, I was walking home from a long day of exams and testsat school with my friends. Typical of the time of year, as we approached the bridge therewas a large number of geese and swans... all of which were lying down enjoying the sun.

I suggested we walk on by calmly and sensibly, with the intention of causing minimum disruption. Swans - being swans - were then hissing and flapping at us from all directions! We carried on walking, with our blazers out in front of us, until we were out of their way.As we arrived on the town side of the bridge, we were met by an older gentleman, shouting at us from his window, saying something on the lines of “You kids, messing aroundwith them swans, get away from them and get out of here you stupid idiots”.

As a writer for the Bridge, I now have a voice, and I’m about to start using it! I hope the99.9% of other Bewdley residents don’t always think the worst of young people; we are infact human beings too! Something I hope people will think about reading this, is the concept that “Anything can become vicious if you push it enough”. If we treat somebody asa criminal, guess what they’re going to become? I hope if we treat each other with respect, and always think the best of one another, our expectations will be met with a reality.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 8th May 2012

Bewdley Medical Centre

Councillors expressed concern that despite attempts to fix a date for a public meeting todiscuss any relocation of the Medical Centre, it had not proved possible to do so as, to date, not all the main parties had given a commitment to attend. It was now understood discussions were ongoing regarding another site in the town centre. If that proved feasiblethen it would provide a second option to consider alongside the site mooted for Kidderminster Road. In those circumstances it was agreed to arrange the public meeting inJune rather than May to enable a fuller debate to take place.

Habberley Road Speed Limits

It was noted that there were four separate changes of speed limit along Habberley Roadfrom Catchems End to Franche in little over 1.5 miles and that a 50mph limit applied to whatwere the sharp bends on the hill for which there was an “advisory” limit of 30mph. Councillors agreed this changing sequence of speed limits was illogical and that it should bereviewed to have less changes and importantly as well to reduce the amount of signage whichamounted to “street clutter.”

Bus Services on Queensway Estate

Having heard that local residents were still pressing strongly for reinstatement of a bus service on weekday afternoons and Saturdays through the estate, Councillors agreed thatquestions should be raised with the County Council as to whether some form of subsidy atleast to provide some basic service during those periods could be given.

Footpath Greenacres Lane

Councillors were delighted to learn that after a lengthy public inquiry, a Government PlanningInspector had confirmed an Order that a footpath and public right of way existed alongGreenacres Lane from Dowles Road to the Riverside.

Street Lighting

In response to an invitation from the County Council for towns and parishes to trial reducedstreet lighting on certain roads from midnight to 5.30am it was agreed that Bewdley shouldbe included in such a scheme. This could lead to considerable savings in energy.

Alison Young ReachesOlympic Sailing Goal

Ali Young, daughter to Pat and Keith has been successful in achieving selection to representGBR in the Laser Radial dinghy class.

Ali began her sailing career at Trimpley reservoir after Pat bought her husband some sailinglessons at the reservoir in 1990 to ‘give him something to do at weekends.’ For the Youngfamily Trimpley became the second home to them for the next 15 years. Ali started sailing atabout 8 years old in an old wooden boat called an Optimist and soon joined the national racing scene with her parents and sister travelling across the country at weekendsto compete in competitions from Largs in Scotland to Weymouth in Dorset. She rapidlyachieved national status and in 2005 won the bronze medal at the ISAF Youth World Cham-pionships in South Korea.

She decided to sail full time to try and achieve her goal of an Olympic place. Her results inthe last 6 months have culminated in her selection despite some intense competition withfellow British sailors.

Her parents have fond memories of Trimpley Sailing Club which has been the breedingground of many top national sailors and yet maintains a truly family atmosphere for members.
