.Lions of District 11-E2,

Here we are in June, the month of graduations, weddings, the beginning of summer… June is also the end of our Lion’s year, and the end of my year as District Governor.

I want to thank my Cabinet Officers – ZCs Mike Cain, Tom Near, Dennis Croft, Barb Durflinger and Bennie Schraffenberger – for working so diligently with their clubs; Cabinet Secretary Florence Kelpinski for recording minutes of our cabinet meetings and mailing the dues billings to each club; Cabinet Treasurer Tommy Otto for keeping all the dollars and pennies in order and compiling our treasurer’s reports; IPDG Roger Houthoofd, and VDGs Gus Malmberg and Mike Brown for their counsel , support and enthusiasm throughout the year. Thank you also to each and every District Committee Chairperson.

Long-standing issues with the Wolverine Lions resulted in the club disbanding losing 44 Lions.

There are 64 new members to date, with 131 dropped members, including Wolver-ine.

The Elk Rapids Lions successfully completed the Club Success Program, generating renewed enthusiasm in their club. (I truly hope that more clubs will take advantage of this club-building program.)

We had a very successful District Convention with about 220 Lions, Lioness and guests in attendance – including two from Hawaii! Once again, kudos to the Conven-tion Committee for planning such a great convention!

A Leo Club in Beaverton will charter in September!

Countless people have received eyeglass and hearing aid assistance throughout our district.

All clubs have been involved in fundraisers that allow them to support their commu-nities, as well as district, MD 11 and International projects.

Walt and I have been overwhelmed by the hospitality and enthusiasm of the clubs we have visited. Most interesting and enjoyable is meeting the members in your clubs and seeing, first-hand, how each club operates.

I look forward to several more officer installations this month. In July, Walt and I will be traveling to the International Convention in Hamburg, We will see some sights of the city, support PCC Esther LaMothe in her quest to be elected as an International Director, and attend the convention events. My year as governor ends on July 9th when I will have a first-row seat as DG-E Gus is installed as next district governor!

Our district will be in good hands for several years to come with the dynamic officers you have elected – DGE Gus Malmberg, 1st VDG-E Mike Brown, and 2nd VDG-E Barb Durflinger. Their dedication, enthusiasm and innovative ideas will be a driving force that will keep Lionism strong in our district!

It has been my pleasure to serve as your district governor this past year!

One of the ideas from the MD 11 convention was a sign indicat-ing “Lions at Work.” This idea originated from a club in North Carolina and could be a way to highlight your club’s activity. This sign is made out of plastic and cost about $45, and can be adapted to suit your club or your project.

Membership Dues – The final increase in our LCI dues becomes effective on July 1st, bringing annual dues to $43.00. Annual District dues remain the same at $20.00. With total dues for regular members now at $63.00, clubs may be faced with raising club dues and may want to consider holding an administrative fundraiser to help offset any dues increase.

Following is a breakdown of LCI and District dues:

NOTES:

LCI dues billed in July and January are based on June and December membership.

District 11-E2 dues billed in July and January are based on May and November membership.

Peace Poster – The traveling Peace Poster display was a welcome addition at our District Convention. Several clubs took one of the Peace Poster Kits, hopefully to have a contest in their community. Although there was no price indicated, our cabinet treasurer would appreciate a check for $10.95 to cover the cost of the kits. Contact DG Lynne if your club is interested in one of the several kits still available.

Membership Chevrons – Previously, club secretaries ordered chevrons from LCI Club Supplies for their club members. For the past two years, LCI has sent a letter and membership chevron to each eligible Lion in our dis-trict for the district governor to present. Membership chevrons are awarded for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 or 65 years of service. All club secretaries will be sent a current list of their membership with each member’s length of membership as of 6/30/12. Please notify DG Lynne if any of your members HAVE NOT received their appropriate chevron.

It’s June Already??!!

. Can you believe it’s June already? And what crazy weather we’re having. They’re actually predicting frost for tonight. So much for global warming.

Hopefully, this wild weather isn’t affecting our projects and events too much. This is the time of year that clubs hold many events. It’s also a time for club’s to “clean house”. I’m asking that you take a look at your membership and determine why we continue to lose members. Let’s try to maintain as many members as we can. Club’s can use all the help they can muster.

In a few weeks, I’ll be going to Hamburg, Germany to complete my training and be officially installed as your Governor. I’m sure this will be an emotional time for many of the Governor Elects. It is truly an honor and a privilege to be a District Governor, especially in District 11-E2 the BEST District in Lions.

I’m in the final planning stages for next year. There will be some changes on committees and operations of the District. One change that has been launched is a new, revamped District web site. Many thanks to Lion Chris Faulknor for his hard work on this project. It’s a pretty awesome web site, so check it out.

My philosophy for next year is pretty simple. Clubs should take care of people in need in their communi-ties. The District is there to support clubs and offer the necessary resources needed. In-coming International President Barry Palmer’s theme is “Follow your Dreams”. Lions really do make dreams come true, so keep up the good work, have fun, and make a difference in someone’s life.

Now, on to some business items:

If your club has not submitted their PU-101 Officers Reporting Form, do so NOW. At last look, there are still 12 clubs that haven’t made their submission. I need this information for the District Roster Book.

The Club Excellence Award form is on the website. If your club qualifies, get it in as soon as possible to DG Lynne.

One of my goals for next year is to improve communication within the District. If you have important information to share, get it to Lion Mitch Smith (Newsletter Editor), Lion Chris Faulknor (Web Master) and/or myself. We’ll make sure it gets out to the District.

Included in this newsletter is the listing of our District Officers and Committee Chairs. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

Posted on the website is a calendar of events for both the District and clubs. Note that the first Cabi-net meeting will be on SUNDAY, August 18th. A formal notice will be going out.

The Lions of Michigan Hall of Fame Dinner will be held on Saturday, July 20th at the Quality Inn in West Branch. I’m very pleased to announce the Lion Mary’s father, PDG Lion Al VanThomme, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. What a wonderful honor.

District Governor Lynne’s year is not over yet. Please try to make your clubs’ donations to all our State and District projects. Thank you for your support and guidance.

In closing, I again want to thank you all for electing me as your next District Governor. Lions Mary and I pledge to help all the Lions, Lioness, and hopefully the Leos in any way we can. We are truly humbled. Also, please keep those people affected by the recent tornados and floods in the Midwest in your thoughts and prayers. Li-ons were one of the first groups to help those in need. It’s what we do. God Bless the Lions, Lioness, & Leos.

Rose City Lions invited Helen Skiver, the winner of the Lions of Michi-gan Foundation Sight & Hearing Sweepstakes to the Lion Cabin to award the $5000 check to her! Rose City Lion Cathy Koehn sold the ticket to her mother Helen earlier this spring. Helen has been a longtime support-er of the Rose City Lions Club, buying many different tickets, always attending the Lions 4th of July Festival, and attending our Big Money Raffle dinner every fall. Helen enjoyed a steak dinner with Rose City Lions and shared stories of all the events she has been to with us. It was great to have the sweepstakes drawing at District 11-E2 convention this year as everyone heard Cathy yell out " That's my mom! " over the lunch room after the ticket was drawn!!

.

On May 14, Lions Fred Spaven and Spencer Chinavare teamed up with the Iosco County Sheriff's Department to work with and oversee local inmates on road clean up. With three inmates and two Lions they cleaned up approximately five miles of road frontage collecting 35 bags of debris along with numerous tires and other large items. Both Fred and Spence said that they would work with the Inmates again and felt that it was a win win situation for the Lions, the County and the Township. Boyne Valley Lions participated at the Memorial Day Drag Races at municipal airport. A day of fun and hard work to assist fundraising for the airport and their local Police department. The BVLC provided all of the food and beverage for the event which assists them financially for some of their community projects.

The Elk Rapids Lions Club has a bright new food cart and the Lions are ready to serve your fa- vorite brats and hot dogs throughout the year. The cart will be visible at all the Eve- nings on river Street starting June 26th and at the entrance to the Arnold Amusement Car- nival during Harbor Days. Their famous striped food wagon is now retired, but the Lions will be selling from this great new food cart at events throughout the year.

AU GRES: The club (with the help of the Lions of Michigan Foundation) was able to provide a local man with new hearing aids. He said it was great - now he can hear what the doctors are really telling him. One of our mem-bers is the Michigan Eye Bank Representative went to visit the Rogers City Lions to put on a presentation. While there she learned about the upcoming projects that they were planning and how they organized these events. This is something that she brought back to the club and shared the ideas. It's nice to find out what/how other clubs do things. Also the club was able to recycle over 350 pairs used of glasses.

BOYNE VALLEY: Installed new floor molding as gen-eral maintenance before spring campers arrive at the Camp Daggett Cabin. Held Memorial Day Drag Races at municipal airport.

CENTRAL LAKE: Held their annual spaghetti dinner fundraising event in our community. Funds obtained from this activity are earmarked toward the scholarships that are award each year to Central Lake High School stu-dents.

CHARLEVOIX: Lion members set up the Red Cross the equipment that is necessary to collect blood at the Com-munity Reformed Church in Charlevoix. The Charlevoix Lions have a standing agreement to assist the community in setting up the equipment for the Red Cross.

GRAYLING: Provided eyeglasses for five individuals who could not afford to pay for them. Assisted two indi-viduals purchase hearing aids. Raised $1,769.10 on the weekend of May 10 & 11 during the White Cane Drive. Busy selling Lucky 13 Raffle Tickets. The club also is sup-porting Relay for Life with a donation of $250. We are also volunteering to run the concession stand at the local event which occurs in July and will be reported then. And finally they collected, sorted, packed and shipped ink cartridges for recycling to benefit the Bob Hale and Ma-rie Prause Scholarship fund which benefits graduates at Grayling High School.

HALE: The club paid for two individuals to have eye ex-ams and receive new glasses.

LEWISTON LIONESS LIONS: Donated $400 to MCCOA for help with “Keep the Wheels Rolling”, and do-nated to the Relay for Life.

ROSCOMMON HIGGINS LAKE: Provided two local individuals with eye exams and glasses.

ROSE CITY: The Rose City Lions help to show communi-ty patriotism by setting up flags throughout the commu-nity for all Federal Holidays from Memorial Day until Veterans Day in November. Lions ask local businesses in Rose City & Lupton area to donate $$$ and we do the work of setting up and take down the flag each holiday. Lion Mark and Lion Josh do all the collecting and schedul-ing and other Lions assist with the flags. Each holiday the community has Flags flowing with pride for residents and visitors!! The dollars raised are put into the public fund to support our community.

The Beaverton Lions have been busy this spring. They just completed a new entranceway to their building, the Beaverton Community Center. Members received a grant for $9,000 and contributed the other $5000 and quite a bit of the labor.
