Gold Star, Bronze Star and Silver Star
Applications due by June 28, 2013!!
Applications are available at the Extension Office and are due by June 28, 2013, for the Gold Star,
Silver Star and Bronze Star awards. Required for recognition is the completion and submission of
a 4-H recordbook in the year the 4-H member applies for the Gold Star, Silver Star, or Bronze Star
award. 4-H members shall apply for these awards and be interviewed by a panel of judges.
Interviews will be on July 11, 2013.
***Additional Award Criteria***
Gold Star- Completion of 3 different projects and activities as well as demonstrated leadership and
community service is also required. 4-H members must be at least 15 years of age and have completed at least
3 years in 4-H.
Silver Star- Demonstrated active involvement in 4-H projects and activities. Eligible ages include 12-14 year
old 4-H members.
Bronze Star– Demonstrated active involvement in 4-H projects and activities. Eligible ages include 9-11
year old 4-H members.
**Ages are based on the 4-H member’s age as of August 31, 2012** (Each of the three awards are intended to be received only once in a member’s 4-H career).
NOTICE TO 4-H CLUB MANAGERS:
4-H “I Dare You” Award Nominations are due to the Extension Office by June 28, 2013. An award nomination consists of a
letter of recommendation from the 4-H club manager. Please
see the Gregg County 4-H Handbook for specific guidelines
for this award.
“Rookie of the Year” applications are also due from the 4-H
club managers by June 28th.
2013 Texas 4-H Volunteer Conference July 12-14, 2013, Plano Texas
Join volunteers and adult leaders from throughout Texas in more than Forty Educational Workshops. Registration $150.00 per adult volunteer (includes Friday night dinner, all workshop materials, Saturday lunch, and refreshment breaks). Registration is now open on 4-H Connect through June 30, 2013.

ATTENTION: All Newly Elected Club Officers
Be sure to mark your calendar for Tuesday, August 20th! You will need to attend our County-wide 4-H club officer training on August 20th in order to prepare yourself for your responsibilities as a newly elected club officer. The training will be from 2:00 to 4:00
p.m. in the Gregg County Extension Auditorium. So make plans now to attend the 4-H Club Officer Training on August 20th. (4-H club managers are also encouraged to attend the training as there will be time to meet together with the new officers to make
plans for the 2013-2014 4-H year).

Swine Validation for Harvest Festival
In order to show swine at the 2013 Harvest Festival Livestock Show, you MUST TURN IN A SWINE VALIDATION FORM BY AUGUST 10, 2013 The swine validation form includes a record of the pigs’ ear notches. Swine validation forms are available at the Gregg County Extension office.
Lamb and Goat Validation for Harvest Festival The validation of lambs and goats for the 2013 Harvest Festival Livestock Show will be held on Monday, August 5, 2013 from 7-11 a.m. at the Longview Fairgrounds. All lambs and goats MUST BE VALIDATED ON AUGUST 5, 2013 FOR THE HARVEST FESTIVAL LIVESTOCK SHOW. Contact the Gregg County Extension office for a validation form.

State Fair of Texas Poultry Orders
The deadline to order broiler chicks for the State Fair of Texas is June 19, 2013. Please call the
Extension Office for more information.
Major Stock Show Turkey Order Deadline
If you would like to raise turkeys for the Houston Stock Show, San Antonio Stock Show, or Star of Texas
Fair, the deadline to pay for and order turkey poults is July 8, 2013.
Harvest Festival Poultry Projects
Are you interested in showing ROASTERS or BROILERS at the 2013
Harvest Festival & Livestock Show? If so, it is time to place your order.
The price per bird is $2.35 and is due by June 1,2013. The order form is
available at the Gregg County Extension Office.

T he Spring Hill 4-H Club assembled as planned on Monday, May 14, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Elections were held; the results: President: Elizabeth Boshers; 1st Vice: Reid Compton;2nd Vice:
Madelyn McGregor; 3rd Vice: Megan Speicher; Secretary: Rachel Boshers; Treasurer: Bailie Livingston; Reporter: Elise Compton; Parliamentarian: Harrison Norris; Historian: Callie Little. There was an immensely fun party after the meeting. The Spring Hill 4-H Club completed a community service project and donated $400 worth of supplies to Longview World of Wonders, Windridge Equestrian Center, and Civil Air Patrol. There are a lot of fun activities planned during this week

Cost: $40.00, Deposit of $20.00 by June 10 7/15/2013 8:00 a.m. A Day with Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Warden Shane Bailey.
Please bring your fishing poles and a sack lunch. Return at 4:00 p.m.
7/16/2013 8:00 a.m. Depart for Turner Ranch in Henderson return TBD. Lunch Provided
7/17/2013 8:00 am Upshur Extension Office
Travel to Runnin N Ranch in Scottsville TX .Will be meeting with QDMA and
Biologist to look for evidence of deer and turkeys as well as talking about food
plots and quality food management. We will make camp at Runnin N and have a
cook out.

We will keep camp at the Runnin N and travel to Caddo Lake to talk with Park
Rangers and Game wardens.
That night you will prepare your own meal.
7/19/2013
We will take a steamboat tour of Caddo Lake and visit Captain Ron’s
Gator Park then return home that afternoon. Sandwich’s will be provided.
Please bring $14.00 for the events and any extra for spending money.

Mason Knapps and Gwen Graves will be competing in the State 4-H Fashion Show. Competing in Share The Fun is Paul Daniel in Solo/Band, Cassidy Keenon in Vocal, and Samuel Olson in Musical. Gwen Graves and Jazzmon Young will be competing in “Health” and Vincent Luna in “Open Category” in Educational Presentations. Rachel Boshers will be competing in the Ag Id Contest.
