Meet the Park RangerWe had a quick chat with Park Ranger Debbie whohelps organise events in South Park and works withall the different groups who use the park.

South Park isn’t just a park these days –it’s a community hub. How many groupsare involved with the park?Too many to mention – it’s great that so many peopleare involved with helping maintain and raise funds forthe park, we couldn’t run the park without them. Wework closely with the Friends of South Park, and arelooking to work with the Street Champions too.

Is there anything planned for the future?Yes – we’re working with Groundworks and theFriends of South Park to build an ‘Alice inWonderland’ themed area in the park. We’ve got thefunding and plan to start the work in September. A quarter of kids spend less than half an hour a weekplaying outside, so we’re hoping that this new areawill encourage kids and their parents to tell stories, explore and enjoy the wildlife.

What’s the most popular part of the park at the moment? The green gym is really popular – welaunched it last summer and isused by many people, from thosewarming up for the Saturdayparkrun, to those whowouldn’t normally exercise. There’s one older gentlemantold us he uses the equipmentevery day when he visitsthe park, which isgreat to hear!

Following our successful bid for £2.4 million ofgovernment money, work to repair damage tothe A67 between Piercebridge and HighConiscliffe caused by a landslip is well underway.

Phase one, which saw Northumbrian Water carry outtests in advance of the main works starting, is nowcomplete. Phases two and three, which will see the roadclosed from 2 June, will begin shortly.

We know that phases two and three will mean asignificant period of disruption for residents, businesses, visitors and commuters and we are doing all we can tokeep this to a minimum.

We’ve held a series of information events with thecommunities that will be affected by the road closureand where possible have adapted plans to accommodatetheir views.

The road is a vital link between Darlington and Teesdaleso it’s important that we do get it fixed.

On the road to recovery

What is the diversion route? The diversion route is the B6275, B6279 StaindropRoad, B6280 Carmel Rd North and A67 ConiscliffeRoad and vice versa.

Durham Lane will be closed throughout workswith the exception of access for residents. Therewill be no way through and it will in effect be a cul-de-sac.

Access for pedestrians (including dismountedcyclists) will be maintained at all times wherepossible.

How will public transport be affected? The Arriva bus service no.s 75/76/76A will run ahalf hourly service diverted via Staindrop Road. Ataxi bus will run from High Coniscliffe toDarlington for the bus route cut off by the closure.
