Prayer Requests Ben Couch's cardiologist will be treating Ben's blockage with medication, no surgery for now. No heavy lifting or straining. Please pray for comfort and healing and that the medication will successfully treat Ben.

Mary McCollum's granddaughter Alicia is in need of our prayers for comfort and peace of mind. Her baby Sami who weighed only 1 lb. 2 oz. passed to the Lord in May. Alicia is out of the hospital and dealing with blood pressure irregularities as well as sorrow. Please pray for the family.

Steve Robinson is home from the hospital, but very weak. His kidneys are very weak. Please pray for him for healing and comfort. And please pray for Linda and family as they struggle to care for Steve.

Sammie Lee Wilhoit continues to have medication issues in trying to find an effective treatment for her transformative migraine. She has been completely out of school since January. She also suffers from a sore throat/hoarseness which means she cannot sing right now. She also misses being a part of Job’s Daughters and just hanging out at the theater. She is very thankful for all the wonderful cards she has received. She has them displayed on the piano and hung about her room. She says it is a visual reminder that she is loved and she spends a lot of time re-reading them. Please continue to pray for Sammie Lee and her family that the doctors will find the right treatment soon and she will have some relief from this migraine.

Page 3

Ongoing Prayer Concerns Please keep Stan and Alma Andrus, Lola Morphis, Norma Bennett, Jewel Gilmore, Margy Lauritzen, Lora Allen, Virginia Wells, and all of our church members and friends who may not make it to church regularly in your prayers.

Do you have prayer requests?

Contact Nancy Klanjac ([email protected]; 967-5427), so the members of our prayer chain can pray for you, or contact the Church Office ([email protected]; 961-6631) to have

your requests printed in the Acorn.

Do you like to cook? Do you often have leftovers? If you say yes to either question, you would be a welcome addition to our Meal Brigade.

Sometimes our church members have surgery or are ill or for some other reason are not up to fixing a meal or getting out for one. They are so thankful to the wonderful Fair Oaks UMC cooks who not only bring a welcome meal, but bring a visit as well. What a great way to let folks know we care about them.

If you are interesting in joining the Meal Brigade, sign up next time there is a request or contact Nancy Klanjac at 967-5427 or [email protected] to let her know that you would like to help.

From Downtown Ministries: Thank you for your very generous donation in the amount of $1,100.00. The Lord has worked through you to fill a very special need at the ministry this month of April.

I also want to thank you for the years of wonderful dedication you have given to nameless and poor families by making sheet cakes every month.

Your thoughtfulness to bless people on their birthdays and special occasions has provided probably well over 16,000 pieces of cake over a span of around 13 years!

The blessings went beyond feeding people. Your cakes contributed to personal happiness in being able to share birthdays with peers and family, creating bonds and uplifting spirits, knowing they were remembered.

We’ve enjoyed meeting some of your members; Karlene is a joy. Her care and dedication to delivering the cakes to our office has been a testimony to faithfulness and love for others.

May our Lord continue to bless your congregation in all your community outreach services for Him and those in need.

THANK YOU! This year’s Endowment fund distribution was designated to community ministries. Downtown

Ministries & Family Promise were among the local outreach ministries that received funds.

From Family Promise: Thank you for your donation to Family Promise of Sacramento. The families here at Family Promise are forever in your gratitude and thank you beyond measure. Please know that your donation is helping families without homes begin again and find a home. May God bless you and yours.

Even More Thank Yous... Thanks to EVERYONE for a wonderful Fun, Free, Fellowship Potluck on May 21st! Special thanks to Betty Phillips for coordinating and organizing the event and to the Karamatova family, friends, and students for providing an abundance of musical talent!

Thanks to Gretchen Hatfield and SPRC for providing the Fellowship Time refreshments on May 22 to celebrate Pastor Jeong’s graduation.

Thanks to Pastor Mary McCollum for stepping in and providing pastoral care needs during the week and performing pastoral duties on Sundays during Pastor Jeong’s renewal leave.

Katherine Parker Serving At: Health Team of the United Mission to Nepal

Location: Nepal, Asia and Pacific Home Country: USA, North America

Katherine T. Parker is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as part of the health team of the United Mission to Nepal. In Nepal since 2013, she was previously in Cambodia with the Community Health and Agricultural Development Program of the Methodist Mission there. She has been a missionary since 2004 and was a mission intern for three years beginning in 2000.

The United Mission to Nepal (UMN), an ecumenical ministry, has a vision of a “fullness of life for all in a transformed Nepali society.” United Methodists have been involved with UMN since it was founded in 1954. More information on its work is available on the UMN website.

Katherine’s work in Nepal is focused in three areas: 1) Adolescent sexual reproductive health and rights and menstrual hygiene; 2) Maternal and child health; and 3) Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). The United Mission works in five areas: education, health, hospitals, peacebuilding, and sustainable livelihoods.

Native to California, Katherine comes from a family with deep roots in United Methodism on the West Coast of the United States. Two grandfathers, a great-grandfather, an aunt, and several cousins have served as United Methodist clergy.

Katherine attended Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Her Master of Science degree, also in biology, is from California State University in Sacramento. Her thesis was on bacterial contamination of drinking water in rural Ghana.

Active in the church since childhood, from a young age Katherine wanted to be involved in mission work. In August 2000, after completing college, Katherine began service as a mission intern with Global Ministries’ young adult program.

Her overseas assignment as part of that program was with the Asian Rural Institute in Nishinasuno, Japan. After 16 months, Katherine returned to the United States to work with the Practical Farmers of Iowa in Ames. She completed her mission intern service in May 2003.

Katherine’s home church is Mt. Tamalpais United Methodist Church in Mill Valley, California. She has been involved in the life of the church in many capacities, including as a California-Nevada Annual Conference delegate to General Conference, service on the conference Board of Church and Society and the Golden Gate District Council on Ministries, and a local church organizer of volunteer mission trips. http://www.umcmission.org/Explore-Our-Work/Missionaries-in-Service/Missionary-Profiles/Parker-Katherine#sthash.ijEvTbkh.dpuf

All are invited to attend Missionary Katherine Parker’s presentation on Thursday, June 2, 2016 at 6 pm.

Is anyone interested in setting up a church group outing to a Sacramento River Cats game? The outing could coincide with the River Cats’ Faith and Family Night on July 8 or it could be on a different day altogether.

If you are interested, please contact Jeff Goldsmith of the River Cats organization at 916-375-4869 to set up a church outing. Once details are decided, the Church Office can help get the word out to our congregation through bulletin inserts, group emails, and the Acorn newsletter.

Join us on Sunday mornings at 9 am in the Library.

We have completed our quarter of reading about and discussing faith. As we begin our new quarter we will turn our attention toward A New Creation.

The Old Testament prophet, Zephaniah, was an observer of cultural behavior that ignored the Teachings of God. We will spend three weeks reading about that as a background, then the rest of the summer quarter in the Letter to the Romans. Paul had the advantage of a recent, historical, personal, visit from God. Paul realized that, unlike Zephaniah, the starting point was not to change society. The New Way was different. Paul’s mission was to gain converts for Christ. The new converts were coming from a depraved society similar to that of Zephaniah’s time and part of instruction for the new converts was teaching them how to live Godly lives in a culture that was not Godly. A new Covenant. A new creation.

Whereas Zephaniah saw the coming judgment of God brightly but his subsequent mercy only dimly, Paul saw both with absolute clarity.

There are important insights for all of us in a fresh look at these scriptures.

With Faith like a child’s, a Christian will be endlessly curious about the keys to the kingdom of God, always wanting to learn more about the many different activities and mysteries of the

Father’s world.*

A new group has formed to create a welcoming place for our upper elementary/middle school/pre-teen-ish kids to belong. Presently, we are reading and discussing The Magician’s Nephew by C.S. Lewis which is the creation story of Narnia.

The canopy and camp chairs will be out in the courtyard (almost) every single Sunday this summer for the 4th-8th grade crowd. We may not always have enough time for an in-depth discussion but the kids will have a place they can go to after church to eat their refreshments, play a round of goldfish, read a little of Narnia, or whatever else comes to mind. We will always be done by 11:30 so parents can plan their family’s Sunday afternoons based on that. (Parents: We won’t meet on Sunday, June 12. My family will be in New York for my oldest nephew’s high school graduation.)

We now have our own spot in the Narthex. One side of the bulletin board kiosk has a C.S. Lewis quote displayed: “Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.” What else would you like to see up there? Bring it in and post it!

Quick show of hands…

Who wants to learn how to tie a real necktie? Who would be interested in using old hymnal pages to make origami?

Who wants to watch one of the Narnia movies on the “big screen” in the Sanctuary this summer?

How is it with your Soul? Small Group Wednesdays at 7 pm in the Library

Contact: Kathy Glass

Are you working hard and weary?

Are you lonely on the road?

Have you struggled, have you stumbled

As you wrestle with your load?

Are you looking for believers

who are travelers like you

Who will love you and pray for you

no matter what you do?

Is there aching deep inside you

to connect and share and pray

To reach the answers to the questions

on the issues of the day

And if the seeking is the answer

And if the praying works as well

If you find your blessings fuller

and your cup is full as well

Then come in the doors and sit down

With a small group just like you

To meet and share the journey

We are here to welcome you.

An Invitation

Summer is always a great time to try something new. Why not sign up to participate in worship in a way you haven't before? Let the Church Office know if you are interested or have any questions about what is involved.

For the month of June, there are openings for greeters and offering stewards on every Sunday and flowers on June 5. The liturgist spots for June are filled - thank you to everyone for signing up early! July and August are wide open for all the different roles.

Receiving communion is an important part of our faith. Serving communion can be an enriching faith experience as well. Communion Sunday is the 1st Sunday of the month and we always need help serving (June 5, July 3, and August 7).

Our Chancel Choir takes a well-deserved break in the summer months. This also means we get to enjoy the sometimes hidden musical talents that our congregation has to offer. There will be a sign-up sheet on the Choir Room door for special music openings during the summer worship services. Betty K. and Rosanne S. would be happy to accompany you or to help you prepare in whatever way you need.

Try something new this summer!

Sign up to participate in worship!

We finished our semi-annual “Spring Cleaning” work day in time to prepare for warmer weather and completed so many projects! Thank you to Dale, Joe, Cynthia, Elaine, Pat, Bill, Lance, Tom, Wayde, Pastor Jeong, Ellen, Jacob, Rudan, Eric, Youngjae, Rachele, Renee, Sue, Gwen, Beth, Judy, Jan, Moongi, Seunghee, Sungkang, Sangsuk, Selhee, Timothy, and Michelle for helping to make this one of the most successful workdays in a long time!

In 3 ½ hours, the shortest work day ever, I believe, we accomplished the following:

Cleaning the stove, ovens and kitchen

Pulling all the tall and some short weeds in the rose patch along Fair Oaks Boulevard

Cleaning the refrigerator in Spencer

Power washing and taping all the steps around campus for painting (too windy to paint)

Picking up garbage around campus

Power washing walls around Little Methodist School for new projects

Checking roofs and cleaning out gutters all around campus

Pulling cobwebs down ceiling and overhang areas around campus

Trimming bushes around campus

Re-grouting bricks on street sign

On the following Sunday, Ellen, Renee, Pastor Jeong, Jacob, Betty K. and Andrew met to finish painting all the steps around campus. Every step is now clearly marked with yellow paint.

Special thanks to Kathy, Adriane and Pastor Jeong for breakfast treats and sandwiches at lunchtime.

FOUMC, LMS and Cross Point Church ROCK!!! It was such a productive day and I am grateful for all those that helped get these chores behind us! We will schedule the fall workday in late September or early October.

Book Club June’s Book Club selection is A Dog’s Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron.

From amazon.com: This is the remarkable story of one endearing dog's search for his purpose over the course of several lives. More than just another charming dog story, A Dog's Purpose touches on the universal quest for an answer to life's most basic question: Why are we here? Surprised to find himself reborn as a rambunctious golden-haired puppy after a tragically short life as a stray mutt, Bailey's search for his new life's meaning leads him into the loving arms of 8-year-old Ethan. During their countless adventures Bailey joyously discovers how to be a

good dog. But this life as a beloved family pet is not the end of Bailey's journey. Reborn as a puppy yet again, Bailey wonders―will he ever find his purpose? Heartwarming, insightful, and often laugh-out-loud funny, A Dog's Purpose is not only the emotional and hilarious story of a dog's many lives, but also a dog's-eye commentary on human relationships and the unbreakable bonds between man and man's best friend. This moving and beautifully crafted story teaches us that love never dies, that our true friends are always with us, and that every creature on earth is born with a purpose.

Bring a sack lunch and join us on Monday, June 20 at noon in the library.

Business Directory

Q: Why do we have a business directory in a church newsletter?

A: The donations provided by the businesses listed help offset the cost of publishing a monthly newsletter.

Q: Who are the people behind these businesses?

A: They are members or regular attendees who consider FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.

Q: Can I be listed in the business directory each month?

A: Yes! Contact the church office at 961-6631 or [email protected] to learn more.
