The MESSENGER June 2019 To glorify God, we invite all to grow as faithful disciples and to share in the love, grace and ministry of Jesus Christ by serving the church, community and world. Discussions with Dave I enjoy watching educational shows on television. Most of the time it is historical in nature as I like learning about the past. In the early days of The History Channel it featured shows about World War 2 and had black and white footage of actual war film taken during combat. Those shows are few and far between today. In their place are more and diverse “reality” shows. But other channels like the Travel Channel, National Geographic, and Discovery will run programming which are interesting and deal with history. Yes, I know I could pay a bit more and get another History Channel that focuses on war history. But I’m too cheap to do so. So, I am watching this show on the Bermuda Triangle on the Travel Channel. The focus regards some of the geography surrounding Bermuda. Bermuda sits on top of a volcano and is surrounded by reefs which doomed many a ship over the years. While most of the waters immediately sur- rounding Bermuda are shallow, they quickly fall to over 6,000 feet. During the show three guys dive a submarine part way down this large depth. The submarine is a glass bubble with the rest of the machine around it. The gentleman being interviewed mentioned the bubble shrinks a couple of inches due to the enormous pressure being exerted by the ocean. He mentioned the metal floor makes a lot of noise during the descent which can be quite unnerving to some people. After he said this I thought, “really?” You are in a glass bubble at an ocean depth that would instantly crush you so fast you would not even know what hit you. And it is only unnerving to “some” people. I wonder what kind of person it would not be unnerving to. This would be unnerving to me. Doing an activity which could quickly lead to my death does not sound like an enjoyable activity. I would also throw in jumping off a bridge with a bungee cord wrapped around my feet, being shot in the air, or twirling around 100 feet in the air also do not appeal to my sense of enjoyment. Other people find great enjoyment from these activities. Other people find history boring. Some want nothing to do with learning new things. I suppose there are even some people who would say crawling into a building that is on fire is a bit crazy. For me, I prefer to do that instead of crawling on the roof! We are all different. Yet we are all part of the tapestry God created. I wonder sometimes why God created us this way. Certainly, if we were all the same the world would be a much easier place to live. We would all like the same things, we would all dislike the same things. I would not need to listen to someone else’s car stereo thumping while sitting at a stoplight. You would not need to hear about an orange car all the time. But at the same time, I would have never known the joys of potato dumplings and sauerkraut if someone had not introduced me to them. I might never had experienced the clarity of an HD LED television and Blue Ray player over an old analog television with a VCR. One of the jokes used when describing the fire service is, “200 years of tradition unimpeded by progress.” This could probably be used to describe each of us, and the church as well at times. We all get stuck and “comfortable” with the way things are at times. These are not the moments in our lives where we grow. It is in experiencing new things, sometimes challenging things, when we grow the most. In life God has placed people who have challenged me to think in new and divergent ways. Sometimes it is frustrating. I wish I could be one of those people who have the capacity to thoughtfully consider challenges and make a rational decision on the spot. Often though, I lash out at differences and make a snap decision. One would think as I have aged, I would have mellowed out. Not always unfortunately. When we consider this beautiful, sometimes frustrating world we live in, competing with people who are totally opposed to what we think or believe in, it is difficult to realize God has created all of this. The realization that God created and loves that person who has angered us escapes us in the heat of the moment. Why has God done this? The tapestry again. The next time you find someone irritating you, remember they are a child of God the same as you. They are loved just as you are. They are a part of the great creation God has placed us all in! Pastor Dave Sobek Book Club This month’s book is “The Cuckoo’s Calling” by Robert Galbraith. We will meet on Thursday, June 6, at 10:00 a.m. in the Gathering Room. All are welcome! On June 9, Jerry Jenkins will lead our Senior Choir as its Director for the last time. Jerry has been directing the Lake Mills Moravian Church Senior Choir for 55 years. To say he will be missed would be an understatement. Think how many pastors he has had to work with! Not many individuals work in the church for even half that amount of time. We will show Jerry our appreciation following the 9:00 a.m. worship service with a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Please join us on June 9 at 9:00 a.m. as we properly thank Jerry for his years of ministry among us. SUMMER WORSHIP HOURS Sunday, June 2 - 9:00 a.m. summer worship hours begin. Plus 50 Retreat This year’s Plus 50 Retreat will take place August 15-18 at Mt. Morris Camp & Conference Center. The theme is “Love, Love, Love,” and the program director is Rev. Wanda Veldman. The cost is $190 for all meals and 3 nights lodging in Black Oak; campsites are available for $86 for the site plus $87 per person for meals. You can reserve your spot with a $75 deposit by July 1. Registration forms have been in the weekend bulletins and are available in the church office.

Moravian Women News On April 26-28, the Provincial Women’s Board of the Northern Province met in Palmer-ton, Pennsylvania. The board has 3 members from each of 3 regions of the Northern Province: from the Eastern Region: Margo Harris, Rev. Nasel Ephraim, and Evadne Morrison-Taylor; Mid-States Region: Pat Baldwin, Nancy Gibbs, and Linda Haymen; Western Region: Marty Karow, Linda Rabbach, and Teresa Holzhueter. On April 27, the Eastern Region hosted its spring rally at the Schoeneck Moravian Church. We were reminded of the Women’s Conference to be held in June at Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The Western Region is hosting its fall rally in September at Mt. Morris Camp & Conference Center. The PWB is making plans for a summer conference in June 2021 to be located in the Western Region. They are also making plans for the next Women’s Conference in 2023. Cindy Fahney and Cindy Miller are working on getting out the registration forms and more information about the Women’s Retreat to be held on September 20-22 at Mt. Morris.

Stewardship/Outreach News The plant sale in our new location was very successful again this year. The hanging flower baskets and arrange-ments, bedding and vegetable plants offered many choices, and we received many compliments from our repeat customers and “first timers.” Your support and the response from the Lake Mills and surrounding communities will enable us to continue several outreach projects and other future endeavors. Our sincere thanks. Although the season is a long way off, we are enthusiastic about bringing back the Mora-vian tradition of the Christmas Putz, telling the glorious story of the Nativity. As we begin the planning stages, we are looking for Christmas/Nativity figurines for the scenes to be created. We would like these figurines to be no smaller than 6 inches and preferably nonreturnable for future use. Thank you for your help.

SAVE THE DATE- KORTH PARK Sunday, August 11, will be our annual out-door worship service and potluck at Korth Park at 9 a.m.

Birthday Wishes If you would like your name put in the Messenger for your birthday, please call the church office (920-648-5412) and your name will be added. We DO NOT put the year – just the date. Thank you!!!!

Town & Country Day Parade Our church float will once again be in the Town & Country Day parade on Saturday, June 29, 2019. We need your help walking with our float in the parade!! Please consider helping support our church. Contact Warren Krueger at 920-723-7888 or Sue Trumpf at 920-734-9386 for more information regarding the parade. We are also in need of small bottles of water, cookies and individually wrapped candy for the day of the parade.

THANK YOU IN ADVANCEFOR SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT

TO OUR CHURCH!!

Member News Have you noticed all of the fantastic news on the bulletin board about members of our con-gregation? There are so many of our members doing miraculous things and we want to celebrate that. Diane McFarlane is putting news articles up as she sees them. If this information is about you or a family member and has been up for a while, please feel free to take articles home.

High School Senior Banquet On Saturday, April 27, 2019, the CEC held a banquet following the 6:00 p. m. worship service for our Seniors graduating from High School. Blessings and best wishes to Logan Nelson, Alyssa Renz and Abbey Voight as you each begin your new life chapters! We hope you will worship with us whenever you are in Lake Mills.

Listed below are opportunities to serve, to pray and to give this month.

Serve: Reverend Richard Lwali of Tanzania is extending invitations to interested individuals who would like to serve with the staff of two Moravian boarding schools, Bishop Kisanji Girls Secondary School or Lusangi Junior Seminary, (both female and male students). Volunteers will be primarily involved with the teaching of English in the classrooms but also participate in sports and games with the students and staff. If you can commit to one month or longer of service between January and November, Please contact Jill Kolodziej, Director of Mission Service, at [email protected] for more details of this service.

Pray: Sister Habona Kisamwa of Kenya requests prayer for the Ray of Hope boarding school in general and, in particular, 10 Masai children who will be joining the school. Please pray for the students and the staff as they provide a home and an education for the young people.

Give: The Mission Grants that are provided to global partners (Mission Areas, Mission Provinces and Unity Provinces) help to support projects all around the world. Recently, funds were granted to two projects in Tanzania: The Sukuma Outreach Ministry and a workshop for Leadership Capacity Building. Grant proposals have been received for the expansion of a medical clinic in Tabora and for publication of Sunday School materials. Your gifts can help to make more funds available for more projects and ministries like these. www.moravianmission.org/give

Back to School Supply Drive How is it that the month of May speeds by every year? The backpacks have barely been emptied from the last day of school and the Stewardship/Outreach Committee is already gearing up for its School Supply Drive for the 2019-20 school year. High demand items this year are backpacks, Trapper Keepers, #2 pencils, dry erase markers, earbuds, post it notes, and 1” binders. We will have a full list of items in the upcoming bulletins, and you will find collection bins in the entrance to church. The Lake Mills School District is very grateful to the Moravian Church for all of the donations to help students who struggle to obtain the necessary supplies. Let’s help these students have another great year!

The Work of Our Boards At the Board of Elders April meeting, Pastor Dave recommended Colton Brandel, Mason Levake, & Kevin Williams be approved for Confirming their faith on May 19 and becoming com-municant members of the congregation. The Elders overwhelmingly approved. In May the Board of Elders met with the Candidates for Confirmation and their families over pizza. It gave everyone a chance to learn more about each other. A “speed dating” session where the young men stayed at their tables and the Elders moved around to meet them all was held. All seemed to have a good time. The Elders will be revising our expectations for mission trips over the next couple of meetings. Vacation time was approved for Pastor Dave June 11-17 and July 20-27. Pastor Dave will also be away at Senior High Church Camp Chetek July 14-20. The Board of Trustees met on Thursday, May 9; following are highlights of that meeting: • the treasurer’s report was received and approved. • several maintenance needs were discussed. • two facility use requests were approved. • three new hearing devices for the sanctuary will be purchased, with thanks to the Moravian Women,

Men’s Fellowship, and Stewardship/Outreach Committee for funding. • there was discussion of creating a policy for loaning/renting tables and chairs. For now, consen-

sus was to loan only the tables and chairs in the garage, with a limit of 6 tables and 48 chairs per request; we will continue to require a $25 refundable deposit.

• Kathy Wendt was authorized to take the handbells and associated equipment offsite for performances. • there was discussion about the church van, to be continued at future meetings.

SundaySchoolNews

We had a fantastic breakfast on May 12 as we celebrated the last day of Sunday School for this school year.

We would like to thank Matt Beckman, Donna Hinzmann and their crew for serving a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, the children played games and had a great time at our first carnival! At the 10:00 a.m. worship service, the children sang a song during the children’s lesson. It was an awesome way to end another Sunday School year. We would like to thank all the volunteers that made this a great year! Our Rally Day celebration is scheduled for September 8, 2019. Blessings and safe travels to all as we enter into summer in Wisconsin.

Shelter for the Homeless On Tuesday, June 11, our church will be delivering a meal to the shel-ter for homeless men in Madison. We are asking for volunteers to help deliver and serve the meals. Please call Pastor Dave or Steve Brockert if you can make yourself available to help. At this time, no discipleship students have signed-up to help on this local mission trip of delivering and serving the meal. Please watch the bulletin board outside Fel-lowship Hall for items you can donate towards the meal for the men. It is a chance to participate in our ministry where we get to be God’s hands and feet for some folks in need of a little help. If you do sign-up to donate food items, please try to have those items in the church kitchen by Monday morning, June 10. The next time we are scheduled to serve is Tuesday, August 13. Any discipleship youth who want to get a head-start on meeting their commit-ment for community service can contact Pastor Dave or Steve Brockert (648-3028) about getting on the August serving crew. The August meal comes before the beginning-of-the-year-disci-pleship meeting where the youth sign-up for their community service activity. In the past, many first year discipleship youth who have experi-enced the homeless service event get that part of their second year discipleship commitment done before school activities and homework start.

It has been a suc-cess and so the tradition continues! Little Lambs V.B.S. is open to all children 3 years old through 6 years old and will be held Mon-day, August 12 through Wednesday, August 14, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with supper being served. We are very excited to continue this program and are looking forward to our little lambs getting together and experiencing camp for a few hours in the early evening. Registration forms were sent out via email. If you did not receive a form and your child is between the ages of 3 and 6 years old, please contact the church office at (920)-648-5412 during normal business hours (M-F 9-12 & 1-4) or Sue Trumpf at (920)-723-9386 or email her at [email protected]. We are asking that all registrations be submitted by August 1 so that we may better prepare for the amount of campers. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Anna Hoyt at (920)-648-5559 or [email protected] or Diane McFarlane at (920)-988-1993 or [email protected]. The cost of three days of LLVBS camp is only $20.00/one child, $30.00/two children and $35.00/family, which includes supper each night, craft projects and a fantastic t-shirt! Please register your children by August 1, and they may even invite friends to join in this awesome event.

*Colton John Brandel, son of Matt and Tracy. Colton is the 6th generation of his family to con-firm his faith in the Lake Mills Moravian Church. *Mason Theodore Levake, son of Jeff and Carrie. Mason also has family ties to the congregation. *Kevin Bradley Williams, son of Jim and Tara. The Williams family has been a part of our congregational mission teams for many years. We are thankful for the years these young men have spent learning about and growing in their faith. We pray God will continue to bless them as they continue their journey of faith.
