Discussions with Dave A Phone and Letters I assume many of you remember the days when a telephone was something that hung on the wall in or near the kitchen. An upscale home might have had an extension somewhere else in the house. The range of the phone was totally dependent on how long the cord was from the wall to the receiver. The phone I grew up with had a rotary dial on it as well. It was nerve racking enough to call a young lady for a date without having to wait for the dial to return so one could spin it for the next number. By the time I got the last number dialed and it began to ring on the other end I was ready to throw up. Oh, and since there was no caller ID someone always picked up on the other end. And letters. We communicated by letters. You jotted down a note or two on a piece of paper, folded it, put it in an envelope with an address and a stamp. Then mailed it. In a day or two the recipient would have the great chance to read the novel you had spent so much time writing. Then came the first fax machines. I used one at the bank I worked at in 1980. Car dealers would “fax” a credit application to the bank. I remember it smelling badly. Then email came about. Messages could be sent and received almost immediately. Then text messages, instant messaging, snapchatting, and whatever else has come about that I am unaware of. We have found countless ways to communicate. And we can now do most of it from a device we carry in our pockets. My current “device” has more power and can do more things than my first two desktop computers. And we do all this in the name of communication. And despite all our attempts at finding dif-ferent ways to communicate, we still sometimes still get it wrong. The Season of Lent is historically a time to learn to communicate better. To communicate with God. Lent is a season of prayer. To pray more. To speak to God more. To be in a better relationship, which communication does. Through all our advances in our ability to communicate, we can only communicate with God in an old-fashioned way, through prayer. From Biblical times until today we still can only speak to God through prayer. We can share prayer joys and concerns through email, phone, texts, or whatever. But we can only speak to God by prayer. The Season of Lent may be over, but it does not mean you should stop trying to speak with God. Every day is a good time to speak with God. Jobs. Weather. Health. Healing. Forgiveness. There is no topic you cannot speak with God about. Prayer: Noun1. a solemn request for help or expression of thanks addressed to God or an object of worship. “I’ll

say a prayer for him” · “a commitment to a life of holiness through prayer and Bible-reading” (prayers).

Couples Retreat There’s still time to sign up for this year’s Lake Mills Couples Retreat, which takes place May 3-5 at Mt. Morris Camp & Conference Center. The cost is $250 per couple, including all meals and lodging in Black Oak Lodge. Come to a beautiful place this spring, spend time together growing in Christ, communication, relationship, and GRACE. The topic for the weekend is focused on a book by Dr. Tim Kimmel, “Grace Filled Marriage.” Come and grow with other couples!! There is a sign-up sheet on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board. Southern WisconsinMoravians for Mission On Sunday, April 28, at 2:00 p.m., at our church, our Lake Mills mission trip team will be speaking about their recent mission trip to North Carolina. There will be a fellowship time with refreshments following the presentation.

Plant Sale Spring is in the air, and it’s time once again for the Steward-ship/Outreach Committee’s plant sale. FUNERALS: We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Phyllis Punzel, who passed away on March 19. Her funeral service was held in our sanctuary on March 25. His celebration of life will be held at the McFarland UCC on April 27 at 2 p.m. We extend our sympathy to the family and friends of Howard Soldner, who passed away on April 3. E-Messenger Would you like to reduce the amount of paper in your household and at the same time help the church reduce the cost of mailing the Messenger? If you would prefer to receive the Messenger by email rather than by snail mail, please let the church office know.

Discipleship In the past few weeks members of the Dis-cipleship Class have been involved in mission work. Jeanne Green, Kenadee Orcutt, and Ava Schmidt traveled to North Carolina with a mission crew to work on relief efforts follow-ing Hurricane Florence from last September. Colton Brandel, Mason Levake, Olivia Meister, and Kevin Williams helped serve dinner at the Homeless Shelter in Madison. All members of the class have served this meal at some point during the past year. I will joyfully recommend to the Board of Elders that we Confirm the Faith of Colton, Mason, and Kevin on Sunday, May 19, during our morning worship. I am sad to be losing them from the weekly class as they bring great insights. This year’s class has been filled with great challenges. There have also been just as many days of great understanding on faith issues. In our last class, these youth were clamoring to do more for Christ and the Church. They want to do more within our Church. I pray we find ways to accommodate them.

Men’s Fellowship Our next breakfast will be Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 a.m. Thank you to everyone who helped with the Easter breakfast and high-way cleanup.

College Goodie Boxes The CEC Committee will gather on Thurs-day evening, May 2, to pack goodie boxes for our college students. We are again requesting donations from our congregation, including items such as microwave popcorn, protein bars, granola bars, no nut cookies, candy and other snack food items. Please bring your donations to the church kitchen by Wednesday, May 1. Please pray for our students as they will be entering into finals during the early part of May.

Sunday, May 19 - Confirmation On this Sunday we will rejoice as Colton Brandel, Mason Levake, and Kevin Williams confirm their Baptismal vows. We also will come to the Lord’s Table for Holy Communion (Saturday, May 18 as well). We will also celebrate the joy of Moravian Music on Moravian Music Sunday with a number of our groups providing music.

The Work of Our BoardsThe Board of Trustees met on Thursday, April 11. Following are highlights of that meeting: • the treasurer’s report was reviewed and approved. • updates were given on several church maintenance items. • it was decided to have new storm doors installed on the parsonage. • Sam Denzin provided an update on his Eagle Scout project, which will involve refurbishing the

planting bed in the upper parking lot this summer. • Pastor Dave reported on the mission trip to North Carolina.The Board of Elders : Last August we moved our Saturday evening worship to Monday eve-nings. We saw a 20% increase in attendance for our services. To have a larger pool of information, Elders have decided to move all evening worship services during the summer from Saturday at 6:00 p.m. to Monday at 6:30 p.m.. This will begin Monday, June 3, 2019, with the last Monday evening worship service on Monday, August 26. During June, July, and August there will be no worship services on Saturday evenings.

Where has the time gone? Another year is coming to a close for Sunday School. On Sunday, May 12, we celebrate not only the last day of Sunday School for this school year, but also Mother’s Day! We invite the entire con-gregation--and you do not have to be a mom to join us--for a fantastic breakfast and a time for fellowship on Sunday, May 12, beginning at 8:30 a.m. and continuing until 9:30 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. At 9:00 a.m. the children will gather for a carnival, sponsored by Sunday School. It will be held outside, weather permitting. After this fantastic start to everyone’s day, please stay for worship as we are planning for the children to sing to the congregation during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Please mark your calendars and plan on joining us on this beautiful day as we conclude our Sunday School year!!

Shelter for the Homeless There were just over 60 guests at the Men’s Homeless Shelter on Tuesday, April 9, during the evening meal time. Donna Hinzmann put together a wonderful chili dinner for the guests. The guests at the shelter were very thankful for all each of you in our church did to send them this meal. Kevin Williams, Colton Brandel, Olivia Meister, and Mason Levake led the meal delivery and serving team. They were assisted by Deb VanOmmeren, Dina Sobek, Dave Radke, Steve Brockert, and Pastor Dave Sobek. Thanks to the delivery and serving crew for trying to share God’s love with these men. It was a good time greeting and serving the guests. This crew went about their jobs quite professionally. It was fun watching Olivia get her vegetables and the homemade dip in those bowls just right. Mason’s hands were a blur as he did what should have been two jobs handing out the cheese and bread/butter. Colton and Pastor Dave were on top of getting the bowls of chili up and ready for the next wave of hungry guests. Dina was quite the trooper as she dealt with handing out the strong strong onions and the cheese/crackers. Deb made more of the guests smile than anyone as she teased them into choosing which of the great variety of cake pieces they wanted for their dessert. Then there was Kevin pouring his special recipe lemonade (or milk) for the guests. It was noted how little spillage there was, way less than Steve could have done. A while back Pastor Dave suggested the idea for including comments from those who delivered and served the meal as part of the Messenger article. The following are some of the comments (as best as I could remember them) made by the Discipleship youth as we rode home from the Men’s Shelter on that Tuesday evening: “I didn’t know what to expect, but I was surprised by how good it felt to do something nice for those guys.” “I noticed how many times the guys thanked us, and how polite and nice they all were.” “I thought it would be about the same as when I went last time, but it was way different. Better in some ways.” “I noticed how much they helped each other and handed each other trays and stuff like that.” “The guy at the end, who talked to us about how great it was that we gave of our time to do this for these people we don’t even know, sure was especially thankful.” The “guy at the end” was the night manager, who was thanking us as we prepared to leave. “Yeah, he got into it about how special it was for us younger folks to help with this project.” Good idea, Dave. It certainly showed how important it is for folks to have a chance to be God’s hands and feet from time to time. A few of us on the trip felt some pangs of jealousy towards Pastor Dave as he gets to spend some quality time with some awesome young adults.

Morris have been distributed during Sunday School. If you didn’t get a packet or need additional Camp Scholarship/Transportation forms, they are available in the church office.

Mini Moravians Celebration The last day for our Wednesday Mini-Mora-vians will be May 15 from 3:15 to 4:30. We will end the year like we did last year with hot dogs and games for our youth that afternoon. If you would like to bring a dish to pass, please let the church office know what you’d like to bring.

Stewardship/Outreach Committee We are busy getting ready for our annual Plant Sale that will be held on May 3 & 4 and May 24 & 25. Please see separate article for more details. Some interesting information from our past: In 1910 we had a German service in the morn-ing with an attendance of 200 and an evening service in English with an attendance of 100. In 1912 electric lights were put in the parsonage and stable. In 1913 a new church bell was bought, the Ladies Aid bought a motor for the organ, and Church Council voted unanimously to introduce individual communion cups. In 1914 English song books were introduced to the Sunday School. In 1915 Pastor reported these gifts he received from the congregation: oats 18 bags, chickens 15, ducks 7, meat 29 pounds, one goose, honey 6 pounds, butter 3 pounds, potatoes 3 1/2 pecks, cabbage 9 heads, eggs 31 dozen, cherries 27 quarts, strawberries 30 boxes, apples 28 bushels, fish 4, pears 1 1/2 bushels, cider 4 gallons, made apple butter with it; also cucumbers, tomatoes, grapes, pumpkins, onions, cauliflower, leeks, and cookies (O.E. Reidenbach). This is interesting. We are still a ‘’Giving Congregation.’’
