A few year’s ago, when Susan’s father’s started declining more rapidly, Susan and I started visiting Bethlehem more often. We stayed in the family home. It was clear that the house was in need of some repairs and some TLC. One of those repairs was the furnace. At some point, the boiler had cracked. Dad went so as to buy a new boiler, but for reasons of his own, he never hooked it up. After a few winter visits, getting by with electric heaters, I broke down and had it installed. Since then, the house has been very comfortable. On a recent visit, however, we realized that the house wasn’t getting warm. The logical thing to do then was to check the furnace. It turned out that the furnace was fine, BUT, the fuel drum was empty. The long story short, the tank was filled the following Monday and (thanks to YouTube instructions) I learned how to prime the burner myself. I am a bit embarrassed to say that wasn’t the first time I ran out of fuel. I have also run out of gas in the car a few times, too. I can see the gauge getting low—but I always believe I can make it to the pump. Running out of fuel is mostly an embarrassing inconvenience. But when happens when the gauge is measuring the energy level of one’s faith? What do you do when your spiritual energy is drained to low or near empty levels. The drain can be caused by a major crisis. Or it can be because of a series of minor issues that pile up until one more drop of water causes the dam to burst. The past year of Covid has been draining. The news of shootings, violence, racism, immigration and more have been draining. So what do you do? You might expect me to say to pray more or some other spiritual discipline. Yet, while spiritual disciplines can help— what also helps do-
ing something different. Get out of the house. Get some exercise. Go
for a walk in a park or on the beach or just the Mall. Take a drive and
see trees in blossom. Splurge (just a little) at the bakery. Ride the ferry
to the City and just turn around and come back. (It’s free, you know)
Watch children on a playground. Open your windows and listen to the
robins. Find something that makes you laugh. And then do it. Remem-
ber, too, when the disciples were at their lowest, they left their locked
room and went fishing! Me? I’m getting ready for some golf.

Please be sure to give us your best contact number, whether it is a landline or a cell phone.

Our Benevolence for the Month of May is
The Stapleton UAME Church
In addition to regular Sunday services, members are nurtured in a variety of ways including Women’s Empowerment Group, Women with a Purpose, Fisher of Men Ministry and A Mother’s Heart & Kid’s Café. This Church began their inspirational community outreach ministry to the needy in April 1987. They were serving primarily the homeless but as the economic winds began creating havoc in the lives of people, they found many needy persons in the community who required assistance. Needy persons...some employed with low salaries… some unemployed because of down-sizing on their jobs… some in ill health needing help… many, many persons unable to make ends meet. You will see many seniors standing on the lines along with everyone else. They serve the many different ethnic communities near the Church, ministering to people regardless of color or creed. They serve all people in need. There is a soup kitchen open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays serving a hot nourishing meal. The food pantry is open Tuesdays and Fridays. There is a youth program “kids café” after school where children also receive dinner and Food Pantry. Clothing is given out on Thursdays. We at New Dorp Moravian Church have been able to support the UAME Outreach Program by providing good, clean, used clothing and occasionally some food items. We do so, because we see them as “partners in mission”. Please consider a generous contribution to support this vital ministry to our Staten Island brothers and sisters. The Stapleton United American Methodist Episcopal Church is located at 49 Tompkins Avenue, 10304; (718) 273-2857. The congregation is led by Rev. Maggie M. Howard. To support this Benevolence Ministry, and all the other Benevolences we support, please use the Benevolence of the Month envelope in your box of envelopes, remembering that together we can do more for Christ than we could do by ourselves.
