June 21st, 2020 12TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOSPEL REFLECTION – 13th SUNDAY IN ORDRINARY TIME - June 21, 2020 Am I afraid of anything or anybody that I don’t say the truth? Jesus tells me not to be afraid of anybody to say the Truth, because: God knows me more than I know myself. He created me in His own image. He has great expectation about me when He called me to life. He expects me to know Him, His ways, and carry out the mission He has entrusted me with. What is my mission in this world? My mission, or the mission of anybody for that matter, first, is to know God as living Truth and my creator. Once I know my God as the owner of my life, I realise that my life-mission is to testify to the Truth. The goal of my life would be to fulfill my mission. There is no turning back. No power on earth would be able to stop me from carrying out my mission. On course in fulfilling my mission, there would be obstacles. People and philosophies, ideologies and selfish motives, worldly ambitions and wealth can come on my way. Would I be afraid of or desirous of these powers and turn back from carrying out my life-mission? Would I be afraid of persecution? Jesus tells us not to be afraid of any power that would stop us from testifying to the truth. He tells us not to be afraid of those who can only kill our body. He can bring us back to life eternal. He is the owner of life. He instills such courage in our heart and mind ensuring that He would take care of us in our difficulties as we stand on the side of truth. He tells us how He takes care of every living and non-living thing. We, His disciples, are of greater value and so, He would certainly take care of us. Prophet Jeramiah was a man who had the whole nation turning against him as He stood for God and His Truth. He was not afraid of anyone. He stood for Truth and spoke for God. He had no selfish ambitions but only one goal, to be the prophet of Yahweh. (First Reading) St. Paul tells us of the power of God’s grace that would save us from sin and death and so we don’t need to be afraid of anything. (Second Reading) Have we ever tuned away from Truth in order to have wealth, fame, power or any selfish gain? Have we retreated from carrying out our mission because of persecution? Has somebody silenced us from saying the truth threatening with death? If yes, we have failed to acknowledge Jesus before humans. Now, Lord Jesus wouldn’t be able to acknowledge us before His heavenly Father. How miserable would our lives be? It was the great literary Genius of all time, William Shakespeare who said, ‘Cowards die many times before their death, but the valiant never tastes of death but once. (Julius Caesar, Act II, Scene 2) How miserable would our lives on earth be if we deny Truth and choose to be on the side of Untruth? Remember the Gospel of St. John. ‘This is the verdict: The light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.’ (Jn.3:19) Let us therefore be courageous to be on the side of Truth. St. Paul said that no power on earth or anywhere can take us away from testifying to the Lord. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. (Roomans8:35) When Jesus was brought before Pilate, He asked, ‘Are you the King of the Jews?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a King. For this reason, I was born. For this reason, I came into the world, to testify to the Truth. All who belong to the Truth listen to my voice’. (Jn.18:37) Let us not be cowards. Let us be valiant to testify to the Truth all the days of our lives. Let us not be afraid of death but be afraid of only sin. Those who sin are slaves of sin and become subject to death. Let us receive the Grace of God and be courageous to say the truth and be on the side of Truth.
